The alkali metals are highly reactive due to their large size and low ionization enthalpy. Their reactivity increases down the group. They react vigorously with water to form hydroxides and dihydrogen gas. Lithium reacts less vigorously than the other alkali metals due to its smaller size and high hydration energy. The other alkali metals react explosively with water and also react with proton donors like alcohols, ammonia, and alkynes.
