In 1994, around 1,000,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda were killed in a genocide that lasted around 100 days. The genocide was the result of longstanding ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi populations that were exacerbated by colonial influences. Belgium had categorized the Tutsi minority as superior and introduced identity cards, giving Tutsis advantages that fueled resentment among majority Hutus. When Rwanda gained independence, the Hutus took power and unrest grew, culminating in the 1994 genocide where machetes and other weapons were used to kill victims who had sought safety in places like schools and churches.
