Ch:5 – Introduction
God promised mankind a redeemer
after the Fall.
To prepare humanity for the redeemer,
God established covenants.
Christ, whom the prophets foretold would
come and suffer and die for our salvation.
The Annunciation of the Redeemer
Salvation history is ongoing
began with the Protoevangelium after the fall (Gen 3:15)
will end with Christ’s Second Coming at the end of
time.
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
(Gen 3:15)
The Annunciation of the Redeemer
Two of most decisive moments involved a
women and an angel
Eve and the devil – eve’s decision of disobedience
wounded every human being
Mary and Archangel Gabriel – Mary’s obedience
counteracted Eve’s actions. Her YES also affected
every human person for good.
The Annunciation of the Redeemer
The Annunciation of the Redeemer
Just as Eve is mother of all the living, Mary is
the Mother of all who live in Christ.
Mary’s cooperation made it possible for God to
enter into human history
This YES is called Mary’s fiat or “let it be done” and
it makes Mary the New Eve
Mary is the model for all Disciples of Christ. We
should all seek to imitate her obedience.
Hail Mary, Full of Grace
Archangel Gabriel greeting – “full of grace” only time it
is used in the Bible.
It means that Mary was conceived w/o sin.
(If you are full of grace, then you can’t have any sin in you. It shows us that Mary was
conceived w/o original sin)
was immaculately conceived.
called the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.
 A special grace from God where He preserved her
and she glorifies God for this gift in the Magnificat.(p. 55 in red)
The Annunciation to St. Joseph
Joseph was a just man (holy and faithful to God).
Becomes Jesus’ foster father and cooperated with
God’s plan to save the world.
Mary and Joseph are unsurpassable models of the
Christian life.
Our Cathedral is named after St. Joseph – this is a
great honor.
Christ’s Infancy and the Mystery of Redemption
The incarnation of Christ fulfilled the prophecies
of the Old Testament about the promised
messiah and redeemer.
Psalm 53~It is known as the “suffering servant”
prophecy.
Question: Read Psalm 53 in the next slide
Analyze how the words would be speaking
about Jesus.
Identify how the psalm is a prophecy that Jesus
fulfills.
Christ’s Infancy and the Mystery of Redemption
The fool says in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.
2 God looks down from heaven
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.
3 Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.
4 Do all these evildoers know nothing?
They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on God.
5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.
God scattered the bones of those who attacked you;
you put them to shame, for God despised them.
6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! Psalm 53
Christ’s Poverty and the Mystery of Redemption
A mystery is a reality that we
can know but not completely.
Its depth and meaning can
partly but never fully
understood.
Christ’s Poverty and the Mystery of Redemption
Activity
Read P.59 last paragraph and do the activity
exercise of reflection ~ virtue of poverty
reflect on needs and wants in your life
Lent ~ give up some of the things that you don’t need to help those that are in need.
We are like bushes that need to be trimmed and cut so that we don’t get overgrown. We
possess too many things they clog our spiritual lives and keep us from God.
Need: Something you cannot live without
Want: Something you want but do not need
Christ’s Poverty and the Mystery of Redemption
Page 60 – Read the first paragraph and the CCC 2444 verse.
How can/do we help those in need?
confirmation class will help serve the banquet as a service project on April 22.
Conclusion
Christ’s entire life was for our
redemption. From his
Incarnation to his Ascension
into Heaven. He fulfilled the
OT promises to save
humanity and brings us to
eternal happiness!
