All about Parent University! Strategies to empower parents and understand the education system. Providing digital literacy as well as bridging the digital divide.
The Listen UP! Program was created to educate high school students about the topic, “Teen Mistakes that May Place You in Adult Criminal Court.”
The 45-minute presentation addresses the topics of cyberbullying, sexting, possession of marijuana, synthetic cannabis, open house parties, underage drinking, possession of tobacco, DUI, driving-related offenses and fake I.D.s.
Before beginning my work on this book, I had many parents asking if it was really necessary to even teach drug prevention to children as young as eight. The answer to that question is a resounding, “Yes!” Studies have shown that children as young as six are smoking marijuana, taking prescription pills, and drinking alcohol.
The moment teens start to be more exposed to substance consumption be it alcohol, nicotine or any other drugs, it is really important to approach the situation with calm and seriousness. This presentation contains a few ideas for the parents regarding how they should face such a situation.
https://www.blvdcenters.org/ .... As parents, some of the key things that we are responsible for monitoring is their safety, their health, and their general wellbeing. Humans are highly curious beings and kids are probably the most prime example of curiosity.
"Real-Life Rules to Surviving a Pandemic, Underage Drinking, Illegal Drugs, Talking Your Way Out of a Ticket, Painless Police Stops, Sexting, and Social Media."
Even good people make mistakes—they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, or have a negative interaction with the police, or are caught in a compromising position on social media. Today, one thoughtless blunder can get you fired or killed, or derail or destroy your life’s goals or aspirations. The stakes are higher than ever, and the risks are higher too.
Teenagers and 20-year-olds (i.e. young adults under the legal drinking age of 21) occasionally make bad decisions and may be taking a drink or drug—or are at a party where other people are—when the police show up. Or perhaps their car gets
pulled over by the police and a simple traffic stop goes devastatingly wrong. Or they’re suddenly splashed across Instagram or the national news doing something irresponsible or illegal, with life-shattering consequences.
This little book provides practical, detailed ideas regarding how to stay safe and avoid or minimize any potential damage to your long- term academic, career, or life goals.
The following information blends the real voices of teenagers and young adults along with the experienced perspectives of parents, tough criminal lawyers, and a Captain of the Chicago Police Department.
IMPORTANT LEGAL DISCLAIMER:
This book offers helpful suggestions, but it is NOT LEGAL OR MEDICAL ADVICE—you should discuss with your family the rules and behaviors that fit within your personal values and local laws. If you have any questions, consult a lawyer or doctor who is licensed in your state.
The first presentation for a course on child rights and protection. This covers the basic issues, parameters, and challenges faced by children globally.
It's very difficult for parents to be alert to the warning signs of substance abuse. Itâs practically not possible to monitor a teenagerâs behavior 24*7, and socially active teens spend much of their time away from home with their friends. But a consistent pattern of moody, unpredictable emotional behavior may be a sign that your teen has started drinking and he is in the way of addiction.
It is very important to call if you cannot make it to your appointment. The clinic and the parent decide on a rescheduled appointment time. The appointment will now take place a different day and the clinic will be able refill that time slot with another patient. Some clinics will not make any more appointments with people who have not shown up to scheduled appointments in the past. By calling and telling the clinic you cannot come will allow you to still make appointments at that clinic.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Hawthorne and Lowell Elementary
4. Alcohol Awareness
Legal drinking age in SD is 21 years old.
There are many laws regulating alcohol in SD.
35-9-1 prohibits providing alcohol to persons under 21 unless
by a parent and in the immediate presence of a parent or by
medical or religious prescription.
35-9-2 prohibits the purchase, attempt to purchase,
possession either internal or external of alcohol by a minor.
35-9-9 and 35-9-10 prohibit a “social host” from providing
alcohol to persons under 21 years of age.
5. Alcohol cont.
By alcohol, SD law is referring to any distilled spirit, wine or
malt beverage.
Other applicable laws involving alcohol are…..
Driving While Intoxicated laws. Any person who operates a
motor vehicle in SD with a BAC content of .08% or higher
could be arrested for a DWI.
Any person under 21 years of age caught driving with a BAC
of .02% or higher is going to be arrested for Zero Tolerance
DWI. (This is basically one drink for most kids)
Open containers in motor vehicles are illegal in SD.
6. Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Use
A person drinking alcohol may or may not be easy to spot.
Some common signs may include:
Odor of alcoholic beverages,
Slurred or mumbled speech,
Bloodshot or glassy eyes,
Vomiting, hiccupping, belching, etc.,
Lowered inhibitions and increased risky behavior,
Unsteady on their feet, poor balance, coordination.
Police can confirm with a PBT or Preliminary Breath Test.
Parents can also have their children checked by a blood test at a medical
provider. The parent has the right to make the child take a test.
7. Smoking
The legal age for smoking in South Dakota is 18 years. This includes
cigarettes, cigars, pipes, E-cigarettes or vapor cigarettes which contain
nicotine.
It is illegal for persons under 18 years of age to possess, smoke, purchase
or attempt to purchase tobacco products.
It is illegal for an adult to purchase or provide any of the above to persons
under 18 years of age.
These are misdemeanors in SD.
Smoking is prohibited on all Sioux Falls School District property and is a
suspendable offense by the schools.
8. Drug Awareness
There are many drugs abused in South Dakota including;
methamphetamines, marijuana, K2/Spice, cocaine and crack, ecstasy or
MDMA, prescription medication abuse, inhalants, and many others.
Possession of any controlled substance in SD is a felony. Controlled
substances are those items scheduled by the government. They are
generally schedule I-V.
Possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor unless the amount exceeds 2
ounces or is being distributed.
It is NOT illegal to possess certain inhalants, over the counter or OTC
medications, or even prescription medications, but it is illegal to consume
them for the purpose of getting high. That is called ingesting an is a
misdemeanor offense.
9. Drug Awareness
Signs and Symptoms of drug use.
As many as drugs on the market.
Generally methamphetamine, cocaine, crack, K2, bath salts, prescription
ADHD drugs, ecstasy, and certain Rx’s are stimulants. These will make
people full of energy. They seem hyper or manic. They may sweat, their
eyes may look buggy, they may not sleep for long periods, etc. There are
many symptoms, but these are some of the easiest to spot.
Marijuana will cause most people to act mellow, with glassy, bloodshot
eyes, a distinct odor, a white or greenish film on the tongue, slowed sense
of time or slowed reaction and perception.
Abuse of inhalants will vary depending on the inhalant but they may have
blueish lips, be zoned out and unresponsive, have paint or glue on their
hands or face. This is a serious problem as inhalants will kill you or
destroy your brain function faster than almost anything.
10. Drug Awareness
Prescription medications are difficult to tell because the prescription itself
will determine the signs or symptoms. Stimulants, narcotic analgesics,
depressants, etc. Each will display various signs.
When all else fails, and your child is acting out of character either get
them medically examined or call the police. They will help you find out
what your child may or may not be using. It is better to be safe than
sorry!
11. Parental Rights to Discipline
In South Dakota a parent has the right to discipline their child in a
reasonable fashion.
What is reasonable?
It is long accepted that spanking with an open hand is an acceptable form
of physical punishment. This should not be so severe as to leave welts or
bruising.
Do NOT use any implements such as a stick, belt, broom handle, etc, etc.
This WILL cause injury and a potential child abuse charge.
Do not hit in the face, head, torso, or other sensitive areas. These are
areas that will result in a child abuse charge.
Do not keep your child from eating, drinking water, or other basic
sustenance required. One meal is not a big deal, but more than this would
be a problem.
12. Parental Discipline
Be aware of the weather if you send your children outside. In SD it gets
very hot and very cold. Do not expose them to harsh climates without
preparation.
Ask yourself, is this a reasonable form of discipline that a reasonable
citizen of South Dakota would do? If the answer is no, or if you even
think it MIGHT be no, it probably isn’t!
If all else fails, call and ask someone. The school counselor, the police
non-emergency line, the Fire Department if you don’t want to call police,
your doctor, etc.
PARENTING IS HARD! BE THE PARENT NOT THE FRIEND!
13. Curfew Awareness
In Sioux Falls, the curfew for people under the age of 18 is 11:00 PM to
4:00 AM.
Juveniles are NOT allowed out unsupervised by an adult guardian
between those hours.
A violation of this is a misdemeanor and will result in a fine and parents
will be called to come pick up the children at any hour.
If a parent knowingly allows their children out during the curfew they too
can receive a ticket and fine.
There are exceptions for emergencies, leaving work, etc, but they have to
be confirmed by the officer.
We always say that with kids, nothing good happens after 10:00 o’clock.
14. Conclusion
The aim of the Sioux Falls Police is to keep your children safe.
If you ever have any questions please call and ask.
