This document summarizes a journal club presentation on a study that examined the incidence, severity, and causes of diarrheal disease in infants and young children living in an urban slum in Southern India. The study followed 452 newborn infants over 3 years, making twice weekly home visits. It found that the average child experienced 1.6 episodes of diarrhea in the first 3 years, with the highest frequency (2.76 episodes) occurring in infancy. Rotavirus was identified in 18% of diarrhea episodes, making it the most common cause. The study provides valuable community-level data on the burden and risk factors of childhood diarrhea.
