Human Disease Ontology Project presented at ISB's Biocurator meeting April 2014Lynn Schriml
The Human Disease Ontology (DO), organized as a directed acyclic graph, represents a knowledge base of inherited, environmental, infectious diseases (http://www.disease-ontology.org). DO's textual definition model incorporates a semi-structured format describing the disease etiology built to capture the complex nature of human disease etiology within a is_a hierarchy. DO includes disease concepts for cancer, metabolic disease, infectious disease, mental disorders, genetic disease and syndromes. DO contains disease definitions, external references to resources including ICD, NCI-metathesaurus, SNOMED, MeSH and OMIM and extended relationships that conform to OBO guidelines. DO provides a central ‘switchboard’ for connecting resources, datasets, and computational tools that include disease terms or relationships.

Studies show that about 20% of all recognized clinical pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion, mainly in the first trimester. Risk factors associated with the occurrence of a sporadic miscarriage have been established, with genetic factors being the most prevalent. As a problem that affects many couples, it is important to increase the quality of prognosis and diagnosis.
The state of the art in behavioral machine learning for healthcareAfrica Perianez
The use of smart devices and wearables is becoming increasingly popular. This allows patients to be continuously monitored and provides a huge amount of health-related data that, if properly analyzed, can be used to improve their health by predicting potential future conditions. Advanced machine learning techniques do permit such analysis, and thus serve to forecast the evolution and health challenges of individual patients. This includes, for instance, issues as critical as early detection of heart disease.
But, moreover, the whole healthcare sector is currently undergoing a profound transformation. The rich profusion of digital data is fostering a move from more traditional approaches towards a data-driven prevention model.
In this talk I survey state of the art methods that allowed an AI-based early diagnosis and risk assessment for individual patients, using information that may include health records, genomic and wearable device data, medical imagery and online physician reviews. I will focus on methods that can be employed to forecast future events affecting a specific patient and serve to evaluate wearable device data and assist healthcare industry in undertaking a patient-focused data-driven preventive approach. Additionally, I introduce how machine-learning-based gamification techniques can be employed to motivate individual users to improve their health condition and achieve personalized challenges.

CHAPTER 1 SEMESTER V PREVENTIVE-PEDIATRICS.pdfSachin Sharma
This content provides an overview of preventive pediatrics. It defines preventive pediatrics as preventing disease and promoting children's physical, mental, and social well-being to achieve positive health. It discusses antenatal, postnatal, and social preventive pediatrics. It also covers various child health programs like immunization, breastfeeding, ICDS, and the roles of organizations like WHO, UNICEF, and nurses in preventive pediatrics.

No longer we will pool data from individuals to predict
what happens at the population level.
Instead, population data will be so comprehensive that it
will accurately predict what happens to an individual.
39. Abstract
The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) commitment to improving health outcomes for
women and men through rigorous science has been compromised by the lack of basic
science evidence obtained from female animals. To correct this limitation, in June 2015 the
NIH announced expectations that "sex," as a biological variable, be included into research
design and analysis in studies of vertebrate animals and humans (NOT-OD-15-102).
Scientists must take the responsibility to implement this directive. However, in doing so,
there is a risk that attention could be restricted to only studies of direct comparison
between female/women and male/men. By contrast, understanding how sex influences
health and disease needs to take a programmatic approach that includes the study of sex-
specific conditions. A programmatic approach will assure the advancement of knowledge to
improve women's health.
