The current ppt discusses the different types of lineations formed due to deformation.
Lineations are genetically related to the foliation planes on which they occur, particularly where both are shaped by mineral orientations. Therefore, the planar and linear fabrics are both together aspects of the same three-dimensional geometry, which is related to the shape of the finite strain ellipsoid or,
more important still, to the history of incremental strains.

Metallogenic Epoch and Province
Metallogenetic Epochs
Metallogenetic epochs, as defined above, are specific periods characterised by formation of large number of mineral deposits. It does not mean that all the mineral deposits formed during a definite metallogenetic epochs. In India the chief metallogenetic epochs were:
1. Precambrian
2. Late Palaeozoic
3. Late Mesozoic to Early Tertiary
Identify 12 common rocks by means of the Rock Chart. Articulate the difference between igneous intrusive, igneous extrusive, metamorphic, & sedimentary rocks

0008 Talking Essay Kc Adjusted Nicola GambleKevin Cooper
I've just nicked and adjusted the card-sort part of the 'talking essay' idea on the QCA innovating geography site - by Nicola Gamble from Comberton Village College - the idea is for the 6 big idea card to be placed on different tables, then students to be given 1 or 2 of the statements and they have to find the right 'big idea' card to place them... then they do some thinking skill / sorting exercise - 1 group per big idea (e.g. an order of importance etc)
Arid Spain uses and management KC AQA AS level GeographyKevin Cooper
Case study of Southern Spain (Andalusia, mainly Almeria) for AQA AS Level Geography Arid Environments option - info presented via pics, with info sheets to give out for groupwork / later feedback... - see 'notes' for each slide for teacher explanation...
A level glaciation millionaire print quizKevin Cooper
To go with millionaire game also uploaded here... to be printed out (I do 3 slides per page with lines for notes - then ask students to explain / justify their answers...)
Fun game testing learning of some key terms and concepts from AQA AS Geography Glaciers part of Cold Environments option topic - but equally applicable to OCR and WJEC and probably other courses too. See separate upload for written quiz with same questions for printing and distribution for more formal individual testing of learning. Some of the answers you might find a little idiosyncratic to my way of teaching and things I emphasise that you may not wish to (e.g. moraine as a landform, till as the substance) - but you can change any you don't like!! Let me know if you like it and use it - I may produce some more for other parts of course (e.g. fluvio- or peri-glaciation), and I'll definitely upload them and link on the AQA ning if others want to use them. I've written some notes at the bottom of the slides of some of the harder Qs - but ask here or on the ning if anything unclear etc...
Acetabularia Information For Class 9 .docxvaibhavrinwa19
Acetabularia acetabulum is a single-celled green alga that in its vegetative state is morphologically differentiated into a basal rhizoid and an axially elongated stalk, which bears whorls of branching hairs. The single diploid nucleus resides in the rhizoid.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Characterizing Rocks
There are 3 major types of rocks
IGNEOUS – formed from molten magma
SEDIMENTARY – formed from sediment
(mud, sand, shells, etc,)
METAMORPHIC – formed by applying heat
and pressure to other existing rocks
3. The Rock Cycle
–a
representation
of the
interrelationship
between
different types
of rocks.
NOTE:
How do rocks
formed at depth
(i.e. all except
extrusive igneous)
get exposed on
the surface???
4. Characterizing Rocks
The three major characterizing features of
rocks are:
• Colour
• Composition (Mineralogy/Chemistry)
• Texture
Note: Even the most sophisticated
geological classification schemes are
based on these features
5. Characterising Rocks
Classification by Colour
Colour Index (used mainly for igneous rocks)
• Leucocratic – light colour
• Mesocratic – intermediate colour
• Melanocratic – dark colour
and/or
• Felsic – rich in light coloured minerals
• Mafic – rich in dark coloured minerals
6. Igneous Rocks
Textures of Igneous Rocks
• Aphanitic – fine-grained. Individual grains
can’t be seen with naked eye
• Phaneritic - grains easily seen with the naked
eye
• Porphyritic – larger grains in finer grains
•
Inclusions
> Xenoliths
> Xenocrysts
17. Colour?
i.e. silicic v mafic
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Grain size /
Texture?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
Gabbro
Not
Mafic easy!! – are these green or grey?
Dark?
(pyroxene or I think pale green!! – so…
Plagioclase
white?
amphibole)
Olivine
feldspar
…but if grey
Mineralogy?
Quartz
18. Colour?
Leucocratic (light)?
i.e. silicic v mafic
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Grain size /
Texture?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
So what is it?
Rhyolite
20. Colour?
Grain size /
Texture?
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Larger crystals called??
phenocrysts
…white, so… ??
Plagioclase feldspar
NB – story?... Think
Bowen’s Reaction
series…
These aren’t crystals
(round – bubble-shaped!)
amygdales
(infilled vesicles)
Medium?
So what is it?
Basalt
21. What are the holes??
Vesicles
Colour?
mesocratic
so… ??
andesite
BUT…
What are the GREEN
phenocrysts?
Olivine!!
So…
Thinking of magma
differentiation, what’s the
story here, maybe?
Mafic magma…
Erupted before olivine could
be reabsorbed into melt…
Melt will be relatively
depleted in Mg,Fe so…
So can’t be andesite
lighter coloured than usual??
So what is it?
Basalt
(vesicular
basalt)
22. Grain size /
Texture?
Colour?
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
So what is it?
Dolerite
23. Looks pretty light-coloured –
and obviously course-grained
So might think ‘granite’… BUT…
What minerals would you expect?
K feldspar and quartz for a start….
So what is it?
Diorite
Whereas what’s here???
Plagioclase feldspar and mafics…
24. So what is it?
Andesite
Colour?
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Grain size /
Texture?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
25. So what is it?
Andesite
Colour?
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Grain size /
Texture?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
26. So what is it?
Andesite
Colour?
Leucocratic (light)?
Melanocratic (dark)?
Mesocratic (medium)?
Grain size /
Texture?
Phaneritic (coarse)
Aphanitic (fine)?
Medium?
32. What’s this?
(look at the
massive crystals)
Pegmatite
Forms when late-stage volatiles are injected into country
rock when granite batholith is mostly crystallised
