Robert Harding Whittaker was an American plant ecologist who made two major contributions to taxonomy. He first proposed the five kingdom classification system that divides life into animals, plants, fungi, protists, and monera. He also proposed the Whittaker biome classification that categorized different biomes based on temperature and precipitation. Whittaker held teaching positions and was widely recognized for his work before passing away from lung cancer in 1980.
