SENTENCES
Rewrite the sentences to make CONDITIONALS:
1- She must have loved him very much because
she waited for him for fifteen years: If she…
If she hadn’t loved him so much she wouldn’t
have waited for him for fifteen years.
2- He is very shy; that’s why he doesn’t enjoy
parties: But he……
But he would enjoy parties if he weren’t so shy.
3- English people speak very quickly; perhaps
that’s why I can’t understand them: If…..
If English people didn’t speak so quickly I might
understand them / I would probably
understand them.
4- I didn’t work hard at school so I didn’t get a job
when I left.: I…..
I would have got a job when I left school if I had
worked hard there
5- The sun will burn your skin if you don’t use a
sun screen.: Unless….
Unless you use a sun screen, the sun will burn
your skin.
6- I live near my office so I don’t spend much time
travelling to work. But if….
But if I didn’t live so near my office, I would
spend more time travelling to work
But if I lived farther away from my office, I would
spend more time travelling to work.
7- We don’t visit you very often because you live so
far away. But we…
But we would visit you more often if you didn’t live
so far away./ if you lived nearer.
8- We will punish you if you don’t tell the truth.
Unless………..
Unless you tell the truth, we will punish you.
9- Take my advice, go to the party. If…………
If I were you, I would go to the party.
10- I hope the weather will be nice next weekend, so
that we can go swimming. If the weather…
If the weather is nice next weekend, we will go
swimming.
Verb tenses:
1-First, I finished work. Then, I went shopping. (after)
After I had finished work, I went shopping.
2- The fire alarm went off during our French exam.
(while)
The fire alarm went off while we were doing our
French exam.
3- I’m writing the report today. (have)
By the end of the day,….
By the end of the day, I will have written the report.
4- I first met Anil around five years ago. (know)
I have known Anil for around five years.
5- Harry last went out with Claire in August. (not see)
Harry hasn’t seen Claire since August.
6- When did you start experiencing problems with your
eyesight? (have)
How long have you experienced problems with your
eyesight? (have you been experiencing)
7- We’ll cook pasta on their arrival, but not before. (until)
I won’t cook pasta until they arrive/they have arrived.
8- Have you made plans for this evening? ( anything)
Are you doing anything this evening?
9- I drove slowly because of the heavy rain. (was)
I drove slowly because it was raining heavily.
10- Sally baked the cake before 3 o’clock. (By 3 o’clock…)
By 3 o’clock Sally had already baked the cake.
11- How long have you Known Sarah? (meet)
When did you meet Sarah?
12- Our visitors arrived during my favourite TV programme.
(while)
Our visitors arrived while I was watching my favourite TV
programme.
13-Diana fell asleep at 10 o’clock. Her sister arrived home at
midnight. (By the time…)
By the time Diana’s sister arrived home, she had fallen
asleep.
14- I am going to study in the United States next year. (This
time next year….)
This time next year I will be studying in the US.
15- The film finished at 11 o’clock. (By 11,30….)
By 11.30 the film will have finished.
16- We are still looking for the dog. (yet)
We haven’t found the dog yet.
17- They liked Athens more than Cairo. (They
didn’t…..)
They didn’t like Athens as much as Cairo.
18- I will do my homework and then I will go to bed.
(until)
I won’t go to bed until I have done my homework.
19- John sings better than Paul. (Paul doesn’t..)
Paul doesn’t sing as well as John.
20- I have known what happened for two weeks. (I
learned….)
I learned what happened two weeks ago.
