Caroline Gordon Quotes
Caroline Gordon creates the character of Alice Blair as one who adheres to the traditional side of
marriage. She is relocated by her family to Kentucky to find a suitable cousin to marry so the family
bloodline will continue. Unbeknownst to her, her bloodline is tainted and she is spurned by Nick
Llewellyn from marrying into his bloodline (John) because her own father (who is a distant cousin)
squanders all of his land and money: I haven t got anything against her personally. . . . It s her blood . .
. I don t want my property to go to any of her blood. . . . (Gordon 181). Alice walks away from
southern traditions to start a new life and John attempts to keep Penhally within the bloodline by
taking the hand of Lucy (daughter of Ralph) who

George Catlett Marshall Character Analysis
George Catlett Marshall was an American Soldier and Statesman. According to May (2002) He is
widely accepted as this nation s most esteemed 20th century military figure and as a paragon of
professionalism and officership (p. 1002). George Marshall s character is what defined him. He was as
an individual who could be trusted by his colleagues, his subordinates and superiors alike. Of all the
qualities of leadership, the one most valued by Marshall and perhaps most reflective of his character
was that of candor. In the spring of 1939, President Franklin D Roosevelt began the search for a
replacement for Army chief of staff, General Malin Craig, who was due to retire on 1 September 1939
(Reist, 2013, p. 1439). In April, President Roosevelt decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Barber (2008) Marshall was eager for more schooling and knew the hard work would
help his career (p. 369). At age 25, George C Marshall was the youngest student enrolled and also held
the lowest rank at Leavenworth (Barber, 2008, p. 369). Marshall worked hard and after graduation,
Leavenworth hired him on as an instructor. Shortly after Marshall went back to the Philippines in 1913
to lead 5,000 troops. It was during this time that he demonstrated his brilliant problem solving skills
and received the highest respect from his troops (Grassis, 1987, p. 1945). In 1916 Marshall returned
back to the United Stated to help, as it was during this time that Countries within Europe were fighting
with one another in a conflict, which would later be known as World War I. After World War I, making
good on his promise, Marshall shared his insights on his success with cadets at the Virginia Military
Institute. He shared his opinions on what successful leadership was all about. Marshall basically
believed that every officer should give his best to his troops and Country and he would get a great deal
more in return. This was where he earned the early reputation for being straightforward and honest.
These traits would later in his career give him enormous credibility with Roosevelt, the Congress and
the American people (Poops, 2006, p.

Compare And Contrast The Book Of Hours
A book of hours was a Christian pray book, most popular in the 15th century. Books of hours were the
most common form of illuminated manuscripts seen coming out of the medieval period. They were
not for monks or university libraries but for ordinary people. They are small and usually prettily
decorated books. They were intended to be held in the hand and admired for their delicate illumination
rather than be put on a library shelf. Books of Hours were commonly found in medieval households
and used as a way to teach literary skills and religion. Each book of hours was unique, while some are
less extravagant than others they similarly contained Christian texts, prayers, psalms, and told about
saints. In most books of hours each page celebrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Leaf from The Tarleton Hours verso: St. Philip and St. James facing each other was constructed in
Normandy, France in 1430. At this time France was deeply involved in the Hundred Years war, and the
English occupied Normandy. During the British occupation in the Hundreds Years War, hundreds of
Normans died. Books of Hours allowed a relief from fear, and their owners to be closer to religion,
through the psalms and art that was contained inside them and the devotional imagery they evoked,
which was an important aspect of life in the 15th century. The pattern in similarities and differences
among Books of Hours emerged because Books of Hours were so common among households in the
fifteenth century. The Leaf from The Tarleton Hours verso: St. Philip and St. James facing each other
being in a Book of Hours with multiple artist was unusual. However, there were other artists
illustrating one book of hours together. For example, the Limbourg Brothers would often alternate
working on pages so each of them would have worked on every page of the book by the time it
reached its commissioner. The Limbourg Brothers influenced other artists in the regions they worked
in. One such Master was the Master of Catherine of Cleves. The Master of Catherine of Cleves often

Fair-Value Accounting and the Financial Crisis Essay
Market crashes are nearly as old as the invention of money itself. But, as Gillian Tett underlines in
Fool s Gold, the latest financial crisis stands out due to its sheer size . Economists estimate total losses
could sum up to $2000 to $4000 billion, a number surprisingly not dissimilar to the British Gross
Domestic Product. In its post mortem, the self inflicted disaster has commonly brought to light the
question: Did bankers, regulators and rating agencies fail to see the flaws, or did they fail to care?
Importantly, it has also created a hunt for scapegoats and quick fixes.
Many Republicans and industry lobbyists have insisted that the financial meltdown would not have
been nearly as bad if not for the deadly Fair Value Accounting ... Show more content on

However, during the financial crisis, the application of the accounting standards was very different,
and did not demand pure FVA.
Firstly, the write downs were not as apparent as they seemed. Due to the mixed attribute model, firms
were allowed to choose the measurement attribute they desired for a position through how they
classified the position. During the crisis, banks did indeed utilize these safeguards and discretion built
into FVA on their mortgage based securities. This resulted in the re classification of many fair value
assets into other categories in which weaker impairment standards were applied. Hence, most bank
financial assets were valued at amortized historic costs on their balance sheets. With only trading type
operations reported under fair value principles . This implies that FVA standards would have made
little difference in a bank s balance sheets and regulatory capital ratios. For the same reason, written
down values were also barely understatements. If anything, they were in fact overstatements as banks
had the individual discretion in determining fair value. Lastly, FVA standards also allowed the use of
valuation models in the calculation of fair values when markets become inactive, and stated that
market prices from forced sales should not be used. Hence FVA should have mitigated contagion
effects, and actually protected institutions against negative spill overs from distressed banks
respectively. In a

The Social Aspects of College Are Just as Important as the...
Desiring to have a better life in future inclines people to focus on their academic career. Schools,
exams, busy schedules and a pile of work are quintessential this goal. Therefore, students who want to
achieve a better future prefer undergoing hard work instead of engaging in social activities. However,
social sides of college do not only occupy a big role, but also has plenty of benefits. Social life in
college becoming increasingly essential in today s world triggered an acceptable consideration: Social
parts of college should be considered as equal as the academic parts because of psychological, social
reasons and its benefits in terms of future.
Primarily, social activities psychologically contributes to confidence, happiness and it reduces stress.
Firstly, social students show more confidence when compared to others. Whether due to friends or
skills that sociality provides; undoubtedly, social pupils have more self esteem. Secondly, happiness is
one of the significant outcomes of the college s social parts. For instance, football practically
entertains people who enjoy it. To clarify, students can elicit a serene and happier life by keeping them
busy with social hobbies. Thirdly, being a social individual wipe outs stress. Likewise, social
activities, including sport are regarded as a powerful enemy against stress. Overall, students
participating in social parts of college supplies confidence, happiness and less stress.
Moreover, taking up new activities, having new

Sl 2 Thermometer
Discussion
The results of this lab helped determine which tools are best to measure different objects. In Station 1,
a yellow metric ruler, an orange metric ruler, a wooden ruler, and a measuring tape was used. The tool
with the highest degree certainty was the orange metric ruler. This is because the orange ruler had tick
marks for each 10th(0.1). The tool with the lowest degree of certainty was the measuring tape because
it kept moving and it was difficult to keep it straight. For Station 2, a wall clock, a digital stopwatch,
and a timer was used. The tool that had the most accurate measurement was the digital stopwatch
because it measured into the 10th(0.1) place automatically. The tool that was least accurate was the
wall clock because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tool with the highest degree of certainty was the non mercury thermometer because it didn t have
to be calibrated and there were tick marks to make the measurement more accurate. The tool that had
the smallest degree of certainty was the dial 2 thermometer because it very wide. This caused the
measurement to be harder to make. In Station 4, a spring scale, an electric balance, an analytic
balance, and a one pay balance was used. The most accurate tool was electric balance because no
calculations or estimations needed to be made. The least accurate tool was the spring scale because the
scale kept moving and block couldn t be measured without a basket carrying it, making the
measurement inaccurate. In Station 5, a graduated cylinder, a beaker, and an Erlenmeyer flask was
used. The tool that had the highest degree of certainty was the graduated cylinder because there were
more ticks. This made the measurement more accurate because the water level was closer to the
markings. The least accurate tool was the Erlenmeyer flask because the spaces between the markings
were large so the whole number had to be guesstimated. In station 6, #1 was accurate because the X s
exactly on the lines. #2 was precise because multiple X s were close to

Boo Radley Innocent Analysis
I do not think Boo Radley is the only innocent in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. While he is a
very notable one, there are others who fit into the category. The first two that fit into this category is
Scout and Jem. Being children, they already have an air of innocence as they do not often know
enough of the world to be anything but innocent. They were attacked by Bob Ewell, who was trying to
make their father pay. The kids were innocent in the matter as it was Atticus actions during the trial
that had upset him. Despite them being in no way connected to what really happened being revealed,
Bob Ewell still went after them as they were the easier target and it would hurt their father. The other
notable innocent is Tom Robinson,

Reflection Paper On Healing And Deliverance
Healing and Deliverance
I began by saying Healing and Deliverance, often avoided, but necessary. Introspection is the first step
towards healing and deliverance. M y personal views and description of healing and deliverance stem
from my own experiences and the experiences I have witnessed. Healing is a process that does not
happen overnight. It is when something has left a painful memory or visible sore that requires
attention. Time tends to heal pain, but pain can take years for a cure. Healing requires constant
attention to the areas where the brokenness, pain and hurting remains. I remember falling off of a set
of stairs and twisting my ankle. My ankle became extremely swollen to the point where I could not
walk. I had to literally crawl to the restroom and back into my room. I thought it was a minor sprain,
but it turned out to be a major fracture. The pain at times was extreme and required close attention. In
order to begin the healing process, I had to face the pain and provide constant care in order for healing
to begin to settle in. I had to use different techniques that include soaking, medicating and wrapping
my ankle to reduce the swelling. I had to be extremely careful not to apply too much pressure to my
ankle which required me to keep my ankle elevated and apply ice. After a period of time my ankle was
healed and I was able to walk again without bearing any pain.
I shared the example of my ankle to connect this analogy with how we experience and deal with pain
and go through the process of deliverance. I believe our greatest pain comes when something is taken
from us like the death of a close loved one or tragedy that leaves a scar or memory that we will never
forget.
Pain hurts and generates different types of emotions and behaviors that can destroy our character and
peace of mind if we are not careful. Have you ever had a painful experience that left you numb,
perplexed and or even in a daze? The type of pain I described can take years to heal. I remember
watching the movie Diary of a Woman. The story centered on a cruel male lawyer and loyal wife who
had marital problems. The marriage experienced great sufferings and left great physical, mental and
emotional pain for both the wife and

Persuasive Essay On Noise Pollution
are being presented with a sense of urgency, we need to be concerned about the greenhouse gases
fireworks produce, which include Carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone. In addition, Fireworks fallout can
contaminate water supplies and residue on the ground can be carried away by rain and end up in our
lakes, rivers, or oceans. Along with both these types of pollutions, Fireworks can be loud and the
vibrations can travel far which results in noise pollution. In the middle of the night fireworks often
disturb people trying to sleep. Fireworks can exceed 140 decibels and noise at 85 decibels or above
can damage hearing. Some people also argue the noise from fireworks scares pets and wildlife like
birds, etc.
For the color effect of fireworks, toxic heavy metals like barium, aluminum, lead, mercury salts,
antimony, copper, and strontium can be used in firework compositions. Outdated heavy metals that
have been used in the past include rubidium and cadmium. Some toxic elements are supposedly not
used in fireworks anymore like lead compounds, chlorates, and mercury as mercurous chloride
(calomel), but some firework chemical outlets still sell some of these ingredients.
Experimental Procedure
Many fireworks are imported from China which is scary because they have a proven track record of
cutting corners by using cheaper, more toxic materials. Some of the metals also have radioactive
isotopes. The American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL) has established a testing and
certification program for Chinese and U.S. fireworks to determine if they are being produced
according to AFSL Standards, which means it meets all U.S. federal requirements. Along with the
AFSL testing s, there have been many case study that prove that fireworks can be extremely harmful
to the environment. The following table shows the toxic elements of Fireworks and what it is used for.
As it is examined, it is clear to see that all the elements from the combustion reaction can be very
harmful to the environment and the living population in multiple different ways.

Rhonda s Lockout Analysis
Rhonda, A collective bargaining agreement is set in place to ensure that there is a level of equality
between player, owner, and league. The salary cap is not necessarily a limit as to what the player can
earn, it can be considered more of what the team can spend per year. A lockout such as the one that
occurred in the National Hockey League in 2013 can be detrimental at any level of sport or job type.
There are many aspects of a job that can be affected by a lockout can affect profits in sales, consumer
morale or enjoyment in the future, and employee morale. I do not believe that a union or
league/business owner desire to go into a lockout, however, when they cannot agree on the terms and
conditions of a new contract they are generally forced

Why Is The Stonehenge Important
The Stonehenge is a massive stone monument located on a chalky plain north of Salisbury, England. It
was built between 4,000 5,000 years ago and believed to be completed in 3100 BC. It is made up of
two main stones: Sarsens and Bluestones. The sarsen stones are considered the biggest stones, while
the bluestones are referenced as the smallest ones. There are many mysteries of the Stonehenge that
have yet to be revealed. It is a magical and allegorical monument in England.
The surface area of one of the stones used in a Trilithon Horseshoe is 222.87m^2. I found the surface
area using the formula, PH+2B. The volume of the same stone is 8.075m^3. This was found using the
formula, BH. These formulas were used to calculate the surface area and the volume because the
shape of the stone I chose is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are three theories that are thought to be the reason in creating the massive monument. One
theory is that it was used as a sacred burial site. Finds of skeletons and burial mounds and the
existence of a ceremonial route are evidence that it was used as a burial site. Another theory is that it
was used as a site Celestial and Astronomical Alignments. The only evidence to support this theory is
that the timings of the cermonies are significant. Lastly, there is a theory in which the Stonehenge was
used as a place for healing. Many ancient societies argue that the bluestones had healing properties.
Many sacred and significant stones make up the construction of the Stonehenge. The Trilithon
Horseshoe is five sets of stones arranged in a horseshoe shaped pattern. The Slaughter Stone is a stone
in the ground which is regarded as the entrance to the monument. The sun rises next to the Heel Stone
during the summer solstice. The Heel Stone is located along the Avenue, a series of ditches. Finally,
the Alter Stone, located inside the Trilithon Horseshoe, is made up of

Cartesian Coordinate Equations
As the name suggests, cylindrical coordinates are 3 dimensional and involve polar coordinates. It
combines the 3 dimensional Cartesian coordinate system (x, y, z) with the polar coordinate system (r,
θ). The r stands for radius while the θ stands for theta (the angle usually represented in radians). The x
and y are replaced with the polar coordinate system while z stays the same. The coordinates are shown
in this manner: (r, θ, z). Graphing cylindrical coordinates is easy as long as you know how to graph in
polar coordinates and in the 3D Cartesian system. First you look at only the xy planes to locate (r, θ).
Start at the positive x axis and go in a counterclockwise direction however many radians or degrees
are stated. Then use r to know how far from the pole, center, to go. If r is a negative number, then it is
in the opposite side of theta (so θ=ᴨ/4 becomes θ=5ᴨ/4) and r away from the pole. The conversion
from (x, y, z) to (r, θ, z) only requires the polar coordinate to Cartesian coordinate equations.Therefore
the following equations are used: cos θ=x/r, sin θ=y/r, tan θ=y/x, r2=x2+y2, and z=z (Zill, ... Show

Anytime there is a circle on the xy plane, it is stated with the radius of the circle, for instance r≤4
would be a solid circle with radius 4 since the radius is anywhere within the distance of 4 from the
center. Now to make a circular cylinder function, you would need a solid circle in the xy plane and a
possible domain for z (either going on for infinity or specify an interval such as 0≤z≤5 where z is only
in the interval from 0 to 5). A cone is not much different from a cylinder, but in a cone the radius and z
are either directly or inversely proportional, so as z changes, the radius changes with it. An equation
for a cylinder then could be written as r≤4, z=r. This states that the solid circle on the xy plane is the
biggest when z=4 and shrinks down to 0 as z goes to

The Meaning Of Power And Religion In The Epic Of Sundiata
In Medieval West Africa, nations of political power and religion overlapped. In the Epic of Sundiata
we see this intersection in the role of prophecy. This essay will show that prophets regularly and ploy
supernatural means to reinforce the political status of future King, Sundiata. While using exerts from
the Epic, this essay will analyze the text to show the underlying meaning of power and religion in
Medieval West Africa In the beginning of the Epic, the griot lays out the story by setting up the
unforeseen future. The griot states, God has his mysteries which none can fathom. You, perhaps, will
be a king. You can do nothing about it. You, on the other hand, will be unlucky, but you can do
nothing about that either. Each man finds his way already marked out for him and he can change
nothing of it. The griot, as a repository for history and hence a spokesman for the largeness of Time,
often reminds his listener of how small mankind can be in the face of such greatness. The tone here is
a bit harsh as the griot points to his audience and tells them they know nothing of what is meant for
them. But this is the griot s purpose: to remind us that we are subservient to greater forces than any
man could hope to understand or master. No matter what anyone tried to do to hinder Sundiata s
greatness, they could not stop it. They just enabled what they did not want to happen. This is what the
griot is trying to tell them. He is telling them that no matter what they do to try

Sandcastle Worm Research Paper
What do you think of when you see a worm? Would you ever consider the possibilities of a worm
saving the life of a fetus? Worms to me were the last candidate to inspire anything, let alone the
possibilities in helping out in the medical field. However, it seems the humble sandcastle worm is in
danger of becoming a cling on warrior and very popular in the media eye. The sandcastle worm
possesses a very unique ability. The sandcastle worm (Phragmatopoma californica), live in sandcastles

their tubes and they just extend their tentacles allowing them to catch food particles and sand grains. It

They do so by inserting a fetoscope which is a long instrument with a tiny camera at the end. To
achieve this wand like instrument to reach the fetus they have to go through the mom s belly creating a

puncture the fetal membrane, the sac containing the developing baby, and this rupture can lead to a
premature birth or in extreme cases a miscarriage. There are currently no effective treatments for
preventing fetal membrane rupture caused by in utero surgery, says study leader Russell J. Stewart,

The Pros And Cons Of Plastics
Did you know that plastic bags remain noxious even after it breaks down? Billions of plastic bags are
given out daily to consumers by the stores to carry their purchases in. They are additionally light,
water resistant, and easy to carry in. Most of the plastic bags are made out from High Density
Polyethylene (HDPE), and these bags end up in landfills or waterways after using them (Plastic
Rubbish, 2008). In addition, these plastic bags are non biodegradable. There has been a new creation
of plastic bags that are made from chicken feathers (Greene, 2015). Therefore, plastic bags would be
able be to break down when disposal. Plastic bags should be limited due to their high negative impact
on the environment that leads to pollution, danger to wildlife, and health problems.

Similarities Between Gemilut Chasidim And Tikkun Olam
Jewish ethics are inspired by the Sacred texts and are expressed in several different ways. Ethics have
been derived from the Torah, and Prophetic visions, and are expressed through practices like Gemilut
Chasidim and Tikkun Olam. The Scared Texts teach that Jews should be open to serving the poor and
many mitzvot command Jewish people to address the needs of the poor. Gemilut Chasidim is how
adherents respond to the call of God to serve others. Literally, giving of lovingkindness Gemilut
Chasidim is a Jewish practice whereby adherents are required to give their time in service of others
with no expectation of reward, as the Torah calls them to do. Deuteronomy 15:10 says You shall give
to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him. Acts of social justice are

people. The NCJWA has many programs which support disenfranchised women both internationally

Comparing God And Speed Limit

If you don t know what a speed limit is, it is the little signs on the side of the road that have a certain
number on them that you can t go over. The speed limit is usually about 45 mph. My opinion is that
God put speed limits to watch over people, in other words to keep people safe. I can t tell you that all

Child Labour In Colombia Essay
The child labour is a serious widespread social problem for the rural and urban Colombia. There are
many reasons why the children in this country are submitted to work either by their own or an
obligation.
Until some years ago, in the rural zone the families were numerous specially to ensure a cheaper
workforce showing a well known growth of the population in these zones instead of the urban ones
where one didn t see this problem and increasing the incident of poverty. So, the principal reason of
child labour in Colombia is that the children meet forced to help economically their families according
to an investigation of the Dane.
Accessing to education is a challenge for many Colombian children, especially indigenous and Afro
Colombian because is hindered by internal armed conflict, impassible routes and long distances
between the children s homes and the school in rural areas.
Domestic work is an issue that Colombia began to address relatively in 2014, in consultation with the
ILO. More work is needed to change the cultural belief that domestic work doesn´t constitute child
labor, a belief that particularly disadvantages girls, who are the majority of those who labor in the
privacy of the home where child labor is more difficult to detect. Household chores are classified
among the worst forms of child labor (servitude, domestic work), and accidents in the home are the
fourth most common cause of death and injury in Colombia.
This issue affects in diverse ways around the

Westjet Case Study Essay
WestJet airlines was founded in 1996 by Clive Beddoe, a successful Albertan entrepreneur who was
desperate to find a solution to the rising costs of business travel expenses (WestJet, n.d.a). Beddoe
combined a small group of Canadian business savvy investors with a regional airline President and
together they sought the experience of successful industry leader David Neeleman, founder of Morris
Air and developer of the One Skies passenger reservation system (Pederson, 2001).
Often referred to as the Southwest Plan, WestJet s original business model was simple; offer
passengers a superior experience at a price that was comparable to driving or taking the bus. This was
easily accomplished by operating one type of aircraft, removing excess frills, hiring employees whose
personality fit a specific type, and by developing a company culture that focused on safety and taking
care of the guests (WestJet, n.d.a.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Peptic Ulcer Disease ( Peptic )
Peptic Ulcer Disease
Ever wonder how many diseases there are in the world? Well, there are tons. Some disease are more
harmful than others. With all the disease it is hard to choose which one is the best to learn. One
disease that is very fascinating is Peptic Ulcer Disease. A Peptic Ulcer is a sore on the lining of the
stomach or duodenum caused by Helicobacter pylori, which is a spiral shaped bacterium that is found
in the gastric mucous layer of the stomach, or NSAIDs. There is multiple things to learn about a
Peptic Ulcer: the history of one, what causes it, who can mostly get it, diagnosis, treatments, and
prevention.
In the early 20th century ulcers were believed to be caused my dietary and stress factors. If someone
was diagnosed with an ulcer they were hospitalized and put on a bland food diet. Then later on in the
20th century gastric acid was blamed for causing ulcers. So then treatment changed to antacids and
medication that stopped gastric acid. In 1982 Robin Warren and Barry Marshall identified that
Helicobacter pylori and ulcers were connected to each other. People did not accept their findings.
People still believed it was stress, diet, or gastric acid that caused the ulcers. Many years later in 1994,
A National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference concluded that Helicobacter
pylori was strongly related to ulcers and that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori could be treated with
antibiotics. Then, a year later in 1995 data showed that 75% of

Analysis Of I Do White By African American
I Would Be Genuine
What Would I Do White? is a poem that not only emphasized how the African American Community
viewed White People, but realized that they did not want to be like them. At the beginning of the last
stanza there is a line which acknowledges that the Black Community registered that they would do
nothing if they were white (Jordan, 101). This is significantly important because the start of the poem
kicks off with a question. What would I do White? or what would I do if I was white (Jordan, 101)?
June Jordan, the writer of this poem then continues giving uncomplimentary information about White
Community. The second and third stanza contain the lifestyle that Jordan sees white people have
during her time. She explains that not

The reasons for then new calendar in revolutionary France during 1789 1806 argued that with this new

Although they thought that to be true the reaction of a person and reactions of a group prove the new
calendar to be a mistake. With the revolution in mind the leaders during this time wanted to achieve a

why the old calendar should change. He stated that it was used to mark fanaticism, persecution, and all

Motivation to Breastfeed
The motivation to breastfeed: A fit to the opponent process theory? from the Journal of Personality
and Social Psychology (Myers Siegel, 1985). I This chose this article because I wanted a psychology
article on breastfeeding. I have ideas of breastfeeding research I want would like to do for my senior
thesis (if I get into the honors psychology program), and down the road for my dissertation. I selected
this article from other breastfeeding ones because it uses data, and because it talks about the
motivation behind breastfeeding. As a lactation consultant I encounter times when I can tell that the
mother comes to me because breastfeeding is just what you do, but really doesn t want to do it; so the
information from the article can give me an idea how to better help my clients. This article compared
the act of breastfeeding to addictive behaviors. It talked about how the bliss experienced while
breastfeeding, the stress right before breastfeeding, and the withdrawal during weaning. I enjoyed
reading this because this is some of the reasons that I went into psychology. I want to understand
breastfeeding from an intellectual stand point; to define it as behaviors and break it down it ways that
creates an environment compatible with success. One thing I took from the article is ways to study
breastfeeding that allows for control groups. They took surveys from both breastfeeding women, and
from women who have never breastfed. They were asked them what they thought the

Does Childhood Background Reflect A Valid Diagnosis Of...
In order for any argument to be dependable, research must take place. Analysis, assessment, and
eventually, judgements occur. This however, does not happen until thorough evaluation of reliable
sources takes place on behalf of both sides. In order for this assessment to take place, it is important to
dwell on the following question: Does childhood background reflects a valid diagnosis of mental or
physical problem to an individual later into their adult life. While Side A believes, yes, childhood
background reflects a valid diagnosis of mental or physical problem to an individual later into their

Market Failure And Its Effect On Society Essay
Market Failure is due to an imbalance or a change in supply and demand of certain goods and services
this, consequently, can lead to a shortage of products or an unnecessarily large inventory. Market
failure can be caused by many different factors such as positive and negative externalities, imbalance
of the price and quality of goods and services and also unrealistic projections for demand along with a
plethora of other factors. The perfect market, is an efficient organisation that meets all the wants and
desires of the public without any wastage of supplies and resources. However, there are many failures
to the perfect market that cause it to be ineffective. This essay will highlight and explain the main
causes of market failure, how they can be opposed and the effect market failure will have on society.
The idea behind the perfectly competitive market is that consumers buy whichever goods they wish or
need with their income and suppliers are free to decide what they produce, how to produce it and what
price to sell it at. For the competitive market to be efficient and effective, supply and demand must be
at equilibrium. If demand for a good increases this will consequently cause a shortage, this will then
cause the price to increase due to demand being higher than supply, as the price has increased demand
will slowly decrease, this will continue to happen until demand and supply are once again in
equilibrium.
There are many assumptions behind the competitive market that

David Koresh s The On The World Of Religion
February 28, 1993 would haunt the nation s government for what they have done. For 51 grueling
days, the Waco, Texas siege would confuse our nation on who to defend; the Branch Davidians at
Mount Carmel or the FBI. In this essay, I will argue that the FBI had to be the main culprit in this
event by ending the standoff in flames from the tear gas used. But first, I want to discuss how David
Koresh got sealed in the world of religion. David Koresh was born in 1959 as Vernon Wayne Howell
in the city of Houston, Texas; his childhood was fairly stressful since he never knew his real parents
and thus raised by his grandparents. But by the age of 12, he started getting interest in the Bible and
started remembering parts of it. In 1981, Howell joined the Branch Davidians after a difficult musical
career of rock music. After departing due to a power struggle for leadership with followers, he returns
with armed disciples in 1987 (BBC, 1999). In 1990, Howell legally changed his named to David
Koresh because he was chosen to be the final prophet with a mission to unlock the Seven Seals of the
Book of Revelations. During his reign, he was speculated to have 19 wives, some as young as 12 years
old, and at least 13 children since he considered himself capable of having as many females in his
compound. But the government blamed Koresh of the unthinkable; according to Daniel Bates of Mail
Online, he was accused of beating the children until they were bloody if they had for example, spilled

An Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s The Red Convertible
Mailk Sims Often times, an inanimate object can be as important and sometimes more important than
the characters of the story. In Louise Erdrich s The Red Convertible, the car played the same important
role as the characters did, but for different reasons. Two brothers, Lyman and Henry, had very little in
common other than their blood. One day they decided to catch a ride to Winnipeg. The car was
introduced while these two were doing some sightseeing in the city. They spotted the red Oldsmobile
convertible. Lyman, the storyteller, almost made the car a living thing when he said, There it was,
parked, large as life. Really as if it were alive. (461) The brothers used all of the money they had, less
some change for gas to get home, to buy the car. The car s significance was the bond that it created
between the brothers. The purchase of the vehicle brought these two together with a common interest:
the car. Once the bond was formed, the brothers became inseparable, at least for a while. The boys
spent the whole summer in the car. They explored new places; met new people and furthered the bond
that the car had created. When they returned from their trip, Henry was sent to war. He left the car
with Lyman. While Henry was gone, Lyman spent his time pampering and fixing the car. Lyman saw
the car as an extension of Henry. Lyman used the car to maintain an emotional bond with his brother
who was thousands of miles away. During the war, Henry was taken P.O.W. and spent time

T. V. Lbo Case Summary
In 1980, at Piscataway Township High School, 14 year old T.L.O. and a peer were caught smoking
cigarettes in a school restroom which violated school rules. The two violators were taken to the
Assistant Vice Principal s office where one student confessed to smoking while the other, T.L.O.,
denied the allegation. The Assistant Vice Principal demanded T.L.O to hand over her purse where he
found cigarette papers, cigarettes, a pipe, marijuana, a list of students who owed T.L.O., and a large
amount of money. The school authorities contacted T.L.O. s mother who then brought T.L.O. to turn
herself in; she eventually confessed to having sold marijuana on school grounds. Juvenile delinquency

When the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court they ruled in a 6 3 margin in favor of the State of New
Jersey. They agreed that the student s 4th Amendment had not been violated and the search of personal
possessions can apply to school officials, as long as the search is reasonable.
Significance of Case to Education
The landmark case New Jersey v. T.L.O. made administrators more aware of student issues and how
they can impact the entire school and community. For example, without New Jersey v. T.L.O. the use
of metal detectors in schools would not be possible; their use ensures the safety of students and staff
while on school grounds. More advanced scanning systems in airports and highway patrol checkpoints
in the 1990s have based their practice off of the decision made in this case.
This case has also set the groundwork for forthcoming cases such as Bethel School District v. Fraser
where the courts decision was based on this landmark case. It was stated that basically students are not
granted the same coextensive rights as adults in other settings outside of school . Institutions of
education still apply the decisions made in New Jersey v. T.L.O. to today s school settings to maintain
order and accountability of student well

A Lexical Pragmatic Analysis of Proverbs in Femi...
This essay is a pragmatic reading of moral and socio political decadence in Femi Osofisan s Midnight
Hotel. It does this by analyzing ten out of twenty five proverbs deployed in the text. In analyzing the
proverbs, this essay observes that each has at least an ad hoc constituent which requires semantic
modulation to get at the meanings of the proverbs. This modulation is not arbitrary, but contextually
negotiated until the reader reaches his optimal relevance.
Wilson and Carston argue that metaphors are cases of ad hoc constructions (7), for instance, when a
speaker says, The boy is a lion . While a literary scholar would see this as metaphorical, Wilson and
Carston believe that the above sentence is a case of the use of an ad hoc ... Show more content on

One of such is with Ossie Onuorah Enekwe where he says that:
To get desperately close to the spectator, to each and every one I have trapped in the darkness or half
light, to penetrate very close and intimate, like a knife in the ribs. I want to make that spectator happy
but uncomfortable. I want to turn him open, guts and all, spice him, cook him in the filthy, stinking
broil of our history. I want him washed inside out, in the naked truth, and then I sew him back again a
different man. (18)
The playwright s closeness to a reader of Midnight Hotel is predicated on the contemporary subject
matters raised in the text. It is true the essence of the play is to effect a social change (as it is with most
literary works), but this change cannot occur if the reader finds it difficult to comprehend what the text
says. Thus this essay lends a hand in that direction, by working out an easy, systematic, pragmatic
format for understanding Osofisan s Midnight Hotel.
Commenting on the playwright s art, Awodiya submits that Osofisan is prolific and theatrically fertile
in creating flexible dramatic forms that have great stage adaptability (15). Awodiya further notes
Osofisan s penchant for invoking traditional African elements of music, dance, songs, mime and
improvisation (15). One of such is proverbs with which he attaches the African sense. Awodiya
acknowledges that

  • 2. Caroline Gordon Quotes Caroline Gordon creates the character of Alice Blair as one who adheres to the traditional side of marriage. She is relocated by her family to Kentucky to find a suitable cousin to marry so the family bloodline will continue. Unbeknownst to her, her bloodline is tainted and she is spurned by Nick Llewellyn from marrying into his bloodline (John) because her own father (who is a distant cousin) squanders all of his land and money: I haven t got anything against her personally. . . . It s her blood . . . I don t want my property to go to any of her blood. . . . (Gordon 181). Alice walks away from southern traditions to start a new life and John attempts to keep Penhally within the bloodline by taking the hand of Lucy (daughter of Ralph) who ... • 3. George Catlett Marshall Character Analysis George Catlett Marshall was an American Soldier and Statesman. According to May (2002) He is widely accepted as this nation s most esteemed 20th century military figure and as a paragon of professionalism and officership (p. 1002). George Marshall s character is what defined him. He was as an individual who could be trusted by his colleagues, his subordinates and superiors alike. Of all the qualities of leadership, the one most valued by Marshall and perhaps most reflective of his character was that of candor. In the spring of 1939, President Franklin D Roosevelt began the search for a replacement for Army chief of staff, General Malin Craig, who was due to retire on 1 September 1939 (Reist, 2013, p. 1439). In April, President Roosevelt decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Barber (2008) Marshall was eager for more schooling and knew the hard work would help his career (p. 369). At age 25, George C Marshall was the youngest student enrolled and also held the lowest rank at Leavenworth (Barber, 2008, p. 369). Marshall worked hard and after graduation, Leavenworth hired him on as an instructor. Shortly after Marshall went back to the Philippines in 1913 to lead 5,000 troops. It was during this time that he demonstrated his brilliant problem solving skills and received the highest respect from his troops (Grassis, 1987, p. 1945). In 1916 Marshall returned back to the United Stated to help, as it was during this time that Countries within Europe were fighting with one another in a conflict, which would later be known as World War I. After World War I, making good on his promise, Marshall shared his insights on his success with cadets at the Virginia Military Institute. He shared his opinions on what successful leadership was all about. Marshall basically believed that every officer should give his best to his troops and Country and he would get a great deal more in return. This was where he earned the early reputation for being straightforward and honest. These traits would later in his career give him enormous credibility with Roosevelt, the Congress and the American people (Poops, 2006, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Compare And Contrast The Book Of Hours A book of hours was a Christian pray book, most popular in the 15th century. Books of hours were the most common form of illuminated manuscripts seen coming out of the medieval period. They were not for monks or university libraries but for ordinary people. They are small and usually prettily decorated books. They were intended to be held in the hand and admired for their delicate illumination rather than be put on a library shelf. Books of Hours were commonly found in medieval households and used as a way to teach literary skills and religion. Each book of hours was unique, while some are less extravagant than others they similarly contained Christian texts, prayers, psalms, and told about saints. In most books of hours each page celebrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Leaf from The Tarleton Hours verso: St. Philip and St. James facing each other was constructed in Normandy, France in 1430. At this time France was deeply involved in the Hundred Years war, and the English occupied Normandy. During the British occupation in the Hundreds Years War, hundreds of Normans died. Books of Hours allowed a relief from fear, and their owners to be closer to religion, through the psalms and art that was contained inside them and the devotional imagery they evoked, which was an important aspect of life in the 15th century. The pattern in similarities and differences among Books of Hours emerged because Books of Hours were so common among households in the fifteenth century. The Leaf from The Tarleton Hours verso: St. Philip and St. James facing each other being in a Book of Hours with multiple artist was unusual. However, there were other artists illustrating one book of hours together. For example, the Limbourg Brothers would often alternate working on pages so each of them would have worked on every page of the book by the time it reached its commissioner. The Limbourg Brothers influenced other artists in the regions they worked in. One such Master was the Master of Catherine of Cleves. • 5. Fair-Value Accounting and the Financial Crisis Essay Market crashes are nearly as old as the invention of money itself. But, as Gillian Tett underlines in Fool s Gold, the latest financial crisis stands out due to its sheer size . Economists estimate total losses could sum up to $2000 to $4000 billion, a number surprisingly not dissimilar to the British Gross Domestic Product. In its post mortem, the self inflicted disaster has commonly brought to light the question: Did bankers, regulators and rating agencies fail to see the flaws, or did they fail to care? Importantly, it has also created a hunt for scapegoats and quick fixes. Many Republicans and industry lobbyists have insisted that the financial meltdown would not have been nearly as bad if not for the deadly Fair Value Accounting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, during the financial crisis, the application of the accounting standards was very different, and did not demand pure FVA. Firstly, the write downs were not as apparent as they seemed. Due to the mixed attribute model, firms were allowed to choose the measurement attribute they desired for a position through how they classified the position. During the crisis, banks did indeed utilize these safeguards and discretion built into FVA on their mortgage based securities. This resulted in the re classification of many fair value assets into other categories in which weaker impairment standards were applied. Hence, most bank financial assets were valued at amortized historic costs on their balance sheets. With only trading type operations reported under fair value principles . This implies that FVA standards would have made little difference in a bank s balance sheets and regulatory capital ratios. For the same reason, written down values were also barely understatements. If anything, they were in fact overstatements as banks had the individual discretion in determining fair value. Lastly, FVA standards also allowed the use of valuation models in the calculation of fair values when markets become inactive, and stated that market prices from forced sales should not be used. Hence FVA should have mitigated contagion effects, and actually protected institutions against negative spill overs from distressed banks respectively. In a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Social Aspects of College Are Just as Important as the... Desiring to have a better life in future inclines people to focus on their academic career. Schools, exams, busy schedules and a pile of work are quintessential this goal. Therefore, students who want to achieve a better future prefer undergoing hard work instead of engaging in social activities. However, social sides of college do not only occupy a big role, but also has plenty of benefits. Social life in college becoming increasingly essential in today s world triggered an acceptable consideration: Social parts of college should be considered as equal as the academic parts because of psychological, social reasons and its benefits in terms of future. Primarily, social activities psychologically contributes to confidence, happiness and it reduces stress. Firstly, social students show more confidence when compared to others. Whether due to friends or skills that sociality provides; undoubtedly, social pupils have more self esteem. Secondly, happiness is one of the significant outcomes of the college s social parts. For instance, football practically entertains people who enjoy it. To clarify, students can elicit a serene and happier life by keeping them busy with social hobbies. Thirdly, being a social individual wipe outs stress. Likewise, social activities, including sport are regarded as a powerful enemy against stress. Overall, students participating in social parts of college supplies confidence, happiness and less stress. Moreover, taking up new activities, having new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sl 2 Thermometer Discussion The results of this lab helped determine which tools are best to measure different objects. In Station 1, a yellow metric ruler, an orange metric ruler, a wooden ruler, and a measuring tape was used. The tool with the highest degree certainty was the orange metric ruler. This is because the orange ruler had tick marks for each 10th(0.1). The tool with the lowest degree of certainty was the measuring tape because it kept moving and it was difficult to keep it straight. For Station 2, a wall clock, a digital stopwatch, and a timer was used. The tool that had the most accurate measurement was the digital stopwatch because it measured into the 10th(0.1) place automatically. The tool that was least accurate was the wall clock because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tool with the highest degree of certainty was the non mercury thermometer because it didn t have to be calibrated and there were tick marks to make the measurement more accurate. The tool that had the smallest degree of certainty was the dial 2 thermometer because it very wide. This caused the measurement to be harder to make. In Station 4, a spring scale, an electric balance, an analytic balance, and a one pay balance was used. The most accurate tool was electric balance because no calculations or estimations needed to be made. The least accurate tool was the spring scale because the scale kept moving and block couldn t be measured without a basket carrying it, making the measurement inaccurate. In Station 5, a graduated cylinder, a beaker, and an Erlenmeyer flask was used. The tool that had the highest degree of certainty was the graduated cylinder because there were more ticks. This made the measurement more accurate because the water level was closer to the markings. The least accurate tool was the Erlenmeyer flask because the spaces between the markings were large so the whole number had to be guesstimated. • 8. Boo Radley Innocent Analysis I do not think Boo Radley is the only innocent in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. While he is a very notable one, there are others who fit into the category. The first two that fit into this category is Scout and Jem. Being children, they already have an air of innocence as they do not often know enough of the world to be anything but innocent. They were attacked by Bob Ewell, who was trying to make their father pay. The kids were innocent in the matter as it was Atticus actions during the trial that had upset him. Despite them being in no way connected to what really happened being revealed, Bob Ewell still went after them as they were the easier target and it would hurt their father. The other notable innocent is Tom Robinson, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Reflection Paper On Healing And Deliverance Healing and Deliverance I began by saying Healing and Deliverance, often avoided, but necessary. Introspection is the first step towards healing and deliverance. M y personal views and description of healing and deliverance stem from my own experiences and the experiences I have witnessed. Healing is a process that does not happen overnight. It is when something has left a painful memory or visible sore that requires attention. Time tends to heal pain, but pain can take years for a cure. Healing requires constant attention to the areas where the brokenness, pain and hurting remains. I remember falling off of a set of stairs and twisting my ankle. My ankle became extremely swollen to the point where I could not walk. I had to literally crawl to the restroom and back into my room. I thought it was a minor sprain, but it turned out to be a major fracture. The pain at times was extreme and required close attention. In order to begin the healing process, I had to face the pain and provide constant care in order for healing to begin to settle in. I had to use different techniques that include soaking, medicating and wrapping my ankle to reduce the swelling. I had to be extremely careful not to apply too much pressure to my ankle which required me to keep my ankle elevated and apply ice. After a period of time my ankle was healed and I was able to walk again without bearing any pain. I shared the example of my ankle to connect this analogy with how we experience and deal with pain and go through the process of deliverance. I believe our greatest pain comes when something is taken from us like the death of a close loved one or tragedy that leaves a scar or memory that we will never forget. Pain hurts and generates different types of emotions and behaviors that can destroy our character and peace of mind if we are not careful. Have you ever had a painful experience that left you numb, perplexed and or even in a daze? The type of pain I described can take years to heal. I remember watching the movie Diary of a Woman. The story centered on a cruel male lawyer and loyal wife who had marital problems. The marriage experienced great sufferings and left great physical, mental and emotional pain for both the wife and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Persuasive Essay On Noise Pollution are being presented with a sense of urgency, we need to be concerned about the greenhouse gases fireworks produce, which include Carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone. In addition, Fireworks fallout can contaminate water supplies and residue on the ground can be carried away by rain and end up in our lakes, rivers, or oceans. Along with both these types of pollutions, Fireworks can be loud and the vibrations can travel far which results in noise pollution. In the middle of the night fireworks often disturb people trying to sleep. Fireworks can exceed 140 decibels and noise at 85 decibels or above can damage hearing. Some people also argue the noise from fireworks scares pets and wildlife like birds, etc. For the color effect of fireworks, toxic heavy metals like barium, aluminum, lead, mercury salts, antimony, copper, and strontium can be used in firework compositions. Outdated heavy metals that have been used in the past include rubidium and cadmium. Some toxic elements are supposedly not used in fireworks anymore like lead compounds, chlorates, and mercury as mercurous chloride (calomel), but some firework chemical outlets still sell some of these ingredients. Experimental Procedure Many fireworks are imported from China which is scary because they have a proven track record of cutting corners by using cheaper, more toxic materials. Some of the metals also have radioactive isotopes. The American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL) has established a testing and certification program for Chinese and U.S. fireworks to determine if they are being produced according to AFSL Standards, which means it meets all U.S. federal requirements. Along with the AFSL testing s, there have been many case study that prove that fireworks can be extremely harmful to the environment. The following table shows the toxic elements of Fireworks and what it is used for. As it is examined, it is clear to see that all the elements from the combustion reaction can be very harmful to the environment and the living population in multiple different ways. • 11. Rhonda s Lockout Analysis Rhonda, A collective bargaining agreement is set in place to ensure that there is a level of equality between player, owner, and league. The salary cap is not necessarily a limit as to what the player can earn, it can be considered more of what the team can spend per year. A lockout such as the one that occurred in the National Hockey League in 2013 can be detrimental at any level of sport or job type. There are many aspects of a job that can be affected by a lockout can affect profits in sales, consumer morale or enjoyment in the future, and employee morale. I do not believe that a union or league/business owner desire to go into a lockout, however, when they cannot agree on the terms and conditions of a new contract they are generally forced ... • 12. Why Is The Stonehenge Important The Stonehenge is a massive stone monument located on a chalky plain north of Salisbury, England. It was built between 4,000 5,000 years ago and believed to be completed in 3100 BC. It is made up of two main stones: Sarsens and Bluestones. The sarsen stones are considered the biggest stones, while the bluestones are referenced as the smallest ones. There are many mysteries of the Stonehenge that have yet to be revealed. Finds of skeletons and burial mounds and the existence of a ceremonial route are evidence that it was used as a burial site. Another theory is that it was used as a site Celestial and Astronomical Alignments. The only evidence to support this theory is that the timings of the cermonies are significant. Lastly, there is a theory in which the Stonehenge was used as a place for healing. Many ancient societies argue that the bluestones had healing properties. Many sacred and significant stones make up the construction of the Stonehenge. The Trilithon Horseshoe is five sets of stones arranged in a horseshoe shaped pattern. The Slaughter Stone is a stone in the ground which is regarded as the entrance to the monument. The sun rises next to the Heel Stone during the summer solstice. • 13. Cartesian Coordinate Equations As the name suggests, cylindrical coordinates are 3 dimensional and involve polar coordinates. It combines the 3 dimensional Cartesian coordinate system (x, y, z) with the polar coordinate system (r, θ). The r stands for radius while the θ stands for theta (the angle usually represented in radians). The x and y are replaced with the polar coordinate system while z stays the same. The coordinates are shown in this manner: (r, θ, z). Graphing cylindrical coordinates is easy as long as you know how to graph in polar coordinates and in the 3D Cartesian system. First you look at only the xy planes to locate (r, θ). Start at the positive x axis and go in a counterclockwise direction however many radians or degrees are stated. Then use r to know how far from the pole, center, to go. If r is a negative number, then it is in the opposite side of theta (so θ=ᴨ/4 becomes θ=5ᴨ/4) and r away from the pole. The conversion from (x, y, z) to (r, θ, z) only requires the polar coordinate to Cartesian coordinate equations. Therefore the following equations are used: cos θ=x/r, sin θ=y/r, tan θ=y/x, r2=x2+y2, and z=z (Zill, ... Anytime there is a circle on the xy plane, it is stated with the radius of the circle, for instance r≤4 would be a solid circle with radius 4 since the radius is anywhere within the distance of 4 from the center. Now to make a circular cylinder function, you would need a solid circle in the xy plane and a possible domain for z (either going on for infinity or specify an interval such as 0≤z≤5 where z is only in the interval from 0 to 5). A cone is not much different from a cylinder, but in a cone the radius and z are either directly or inversely proportional, so as z changes, the radius changes with it. An equation for a cylinder then could be written as r≤4, z=r. This states that the solid circle on the xy plane is the biggest when z=4 and shrinks down to 0 as z goes to ... While using exerts from the Epic, this essay will analyze the text to show the underlying meaning of power and religion in Medieval West Africa In the beginning of the Epic, the griot lays out the story by setting up the unforeseen future. The griot states, God has his mysteries which none can fathom. You, perhaps, will be a king. You can do nothing about it. You, on the other hand, will be unlucky, but you can do nothing about that either. Each man finds his way already marked out for him and he can change nothing of it. The griot, as a repository for history and hence a spokesman for the largeness of Time, often reminds his listener of how small mankind can be in the face of such greatness. The tone here is a bit harsh as the griot points to his audience and tells them they know nothing of what is meant for them. But this is the griot s purpose: to remind us that we are subservient to greater forces than any man could hope to understand or master. No matter what anyone tried to do to hinder Sundiata s greatness, they could not stop it. They just enabled what they did not want to happen. This is what the griot is trying to tell them. He is telling them that no matter what they do to try ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Facts are an important key to a story or life in general. I enjoy to hear the history of a situation, to be able to see if I am able to build on the situation. During a meeting, I would rather hear about the past first then try to come up with new ideas that may not work. I also am an observer in situations. When walking into a room of 100 people or a group of five friends, I am always observing for details. It may not be important at the time, but I would rather notice and observe details as soon as I enter a new surrounding or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. An Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s The Red Convertible Mailk Sims Often times, an inanimate object can be as important and sometimes more important than the characters of the story. In Louise Erdrich s The Red Convertible, the car played the same important role as the characters did, but for different reasons. Two brothers, Lyman and Henry, had very little in common other than their blood. One day they decided to catch a ride to Winnipeg. The car was introduced while these two were doing some sightseeing in the city. They spotted the red Oldsmobile convertible. Lyman, the storyteller, almost made the car a living thing when he said, There it was, parked, large as life. Really as if it were alive. (461) The brothers used all of the money they had, less some change for gas to get home, to buy the car. The car s significance was the bond that it created between the brothers. The purchase of the vehicle brought these two together with a common interest: the car. Once the bond was formed, the brothers became inseparable, at least for a while. The boys spent the whole summer in the car. They explored new places; met new people and furthered the bond that the car had created. When they returned from their trip, Henry was sent to war. He left the car with Lyman. While Henry was gone, Lyman spent his time pampering and fixing the car. Lyman saw the car as an extension of Henry. Lyman used the car to maintain an emotional bond with his brother who was thousands of miles away. During the war, Henry was taken P.O.W. and spent time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. T. V. Lbo Case Summary In 1980, at Piscataway Township High School, 14 year old T.L.O. and a peer were caught smoking cigarettes in a school restroom which violated school rules. The two violators were taken to the Assistant Vice Principal s office where one student confessed to smoking while the other, T.L.O., denied the allegation. The Assistant Vice Principal demanded T.L.O to hand over her purse where he found cigarette papers, cigarettes, a pipe, marijuana, a list of students who owed T.L.O., and a large amount of money. The school authorities contacted T.L.O. s mother who then brought T.L.O. to turn herself in; she eventually confessed to having sold marijuana on school grounds. Juvenile delinquency charges were brought upon T.L.O. in the Juvenile and Domestic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court they ruled in a 6 3 margin in favor of the State of New Jersey. They agreed that the student s 4th Amendment had not been violated and the search of personal possessions can apply to school officials, as long as the search is reasonable. Significance of Case to Education The landmark case New Jersey v. T.L.O. made administrators more aware of student issues and how they can impact the entire school and community. For example, without New Jersey v. T.L.O. the use of metal detectors in schools would not be possible; their use ensures the safety of students and staff while on school grounds. More advanced scanning systems in airports and highway patrol checkpoints in the 1990s have based their practice off of the decision made in this case. This case has also set the groundwork for forthcoming cases such as Bethel School District v. Fraser where the courts decision was based on this landmark case. It was stated that basically students are not granted the same coextensive rights as adults in other settings outside of school . Institutions of education still apply the decisions made in New Jersey v. T.L.O. to today s school settings to maintain order and accountability of student well ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. A Lexical Pragmatic Analysis of Proverbs in Femi... This essay is a pragmatic reading of moral and socio political decadence in Femi Osofisan s Midnight Hotel. It does this by analyzing ten out of twenty five proverbs deployed in the text. In analyzing the proverbs, this essay observes that each has at least an ad hoc constituent which requires semantic modulation to get at the meanings of the proverbs. This modulation is not arbitrary, but contextually negotiated until the reader reaches his optimal relevance. Wilson and Carston argue that metaphors are cases of ad hoc constructions (7), for instance, when a speaker says, The boy is a lion . While a literary scholar would see this as metaphorical, Wilson and Carston believe that the above sentence is a case of the use of an ad hoc ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of such is with Ossie Onuorah Enekwe where he says that: To get desperately close to the spectator, to each and every one I have trapped in the darkness or half light, to penetrate very close and intimate, like a knife in the ribs. I want to make that spectator happy but uncomfortable. I want to turn him open, guts and all, spice him, cook him in the filthy, stinking broil of our history. I want him washed inside out, in the naked truth, and then I sew him back again a different man. (18) The playwright s closeness to a reader of Midnight Hotel is predicated on the contemporary subject matters raised in the text. It is true the essence of the play is to effect a social change (as it is with most literary works), but this change cannot occur if the reader finds it difficult to comprehend what the text says. Thus this essay lends a hand in that direction, by working out an easy, systematic, pragmatic format for understanding Osofisan s Midnight Hotel. Commenting on the playwright s art, Awodiya submits that Osofisan is prolific and theatrically fertile in creating flexible dramatic forms that have great stage adaptability (15). Awodiya further notes Osofisan s penchant for invoking traditional African elements of music, dance, songs, mime and improvisation (15). One of such is proverbs with which he attaches the African sense. Awodiya acknowledges that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
