Downtown Houston Essay
Downtown Houston is often associated with business, entertainment and plenty of traffic. However,
over the next 5 years the center of our city will be focusing on building its reputation as a residential
neighborhood.
Houston has seen a major revitalization of the areas inside of the 610 loop, from the Heights, to
Montrose, and Midtown. Many new high rises have been built in these up and coming neighborhoods
over the last decade, resulting in an influx of residential living that has slowly crept toward downtown,
but has never quite reached into the limits of the downtown area.
Mostly attracting young urban professionals, empty nesters and small families, Downtown Houston is
hoping to provide more housing options for just about any Houstonian interested in calling the area
home. To show it means business, the city s Downtown s Living Initiative is going strong, offering
$15,000 per unit in tax rebates developers who commit to building homes or undertake multifamily
living projects. Currently, 12 residential projects are set to add to the neighborhood, which is predicted

Currently, the METRO Rail line is planning expansions that will transport riders all the way out to UH

Imperialism In England And Germany
The early 19th and 20th centuries in England and Germany were times that would define modern
Europe for ages. While England had been a world superpower since the 1500 s, they had to compete
with Germany, a new and emerging country. For in the newer countries, imperialism was giving the
people a newfound sense of nationalism further empowering people. Modernizing industry at a rapid
pace shaped the workforce, while political systems were beginning to change in England while taking
shape in Germany. Yet, Germany s new found nationalism and industry ended up making them a
stronger nation than England.
In 1871, Realpolitik was at its height when Otto von Bismarck of Prussia formed Germany. Bismarck
was appointed as the prime minister of Prussia to crush the growing power of the liberals. It was his
job to instill conservative values while avoiding progressive thinking with Western Europe. Bismarck
used war as a political tactic by getting into wars he knew could win for Prussia. He lured Denmark
and France into war to beat them and add to a growing sense of pride and nationalism within the
German states. Two houses of government formed with the aristocracy having more power than the
lower house. The biggest downside of Bismarck getting into wars with surrounding countries was that
Germany was not industrializing over this period of time. Although, once Germany unified, Bismarck
was able to jumpstart the economy by implementing a series of laws that would help businesses

Id, Ego, And Superego In The Lady With The Pet Dog
In Joyce Oates short story The Lady with the Pet Dog, the main character, Anna, represents the Id,
Ego, and Superego characteristics defined by Sigmund Freud. Anna is facing her morals (Superego)
and feelings (Id), being confined to a marriage and detesting her affair. Because Anna is forced to
balance a failing marriage, and loving her husband, while also loving a man who s not her husband,
and not loving him because she can t, builds stress inside her and leads to rash desires and actions.
Anna displays Freud s Id characteristics throughout, the things she wants most are life and love. Anna
is in the middle of a dysfunctional marriage and starts an affair with another man. Her Id psyche is
prevalent when her husband says that he loves her, but she thinks about her lover saying ...if betraying
him (her husband) it would give her life a center (Oates 239). Anna s unconscious immature Id psyche
thinks that the only way for her to have a purpose in life is to be with her lover, only looking for
pleasure and not thinking about the consequences (McLeod). The Id is overlooking the common logic,
she is married and her lover is married too, which is morally wrong, overriding the Superego. Anna s
Id can be compared to that of a child s, like a kid at the store who asks his mom for candy, and when
she says no he decides to steal the candy. In contrast, Anna says ....of course she was married,
permanently married (Oates 246). Anna still can t make up her mind about her

This Narrative Will Give You Information On Women’S Roles
This narrative will give you information on women s roles in the 18th and 19th century. It will discuss
Queen Victoria role, and her thoughts when she ruled in the 18th century and Harriet Tubman s role
and her views during the 19th century. If the two met, their conversation could start by both of them
asking questions about their views and concerns during their time. Queen Victoria would have started
the dialog by asking Harriet questions about their similarities and when did she become so passionate
about her freedom and the freedom of other slaves. Queen Victoria would proceed with other
questions such as Harriet s leadership abilities and her capability of leading black slaves to their

The Importance Of Senioritis In Long Beach Colleges
As a program coordinator for the Southern California College Advising Corps (SCCAC), a college
access program that missions itself on improving college outcomes for low income, first generation,
and underrepresented students, one of the biggest hurdles I have seen through my staff members has
been combatting motivation levels during the second semester of a high school student s senior year.
Overseeing the Long Beach district, every single one of the SCCAC advisors has experienced this
phenomenon, especially during the spring semester. For most students at the Long Beach high schools,
they gain a sense of senioritis after having completed their college and financial aid applications.
Though the term is not talked in much detail in academic research, senioritis is a term the advisors
have been hearing from their students more frequently. Senioritis is simply the lack of motivation or
performance that high school seniors face as it gets closer to their possible graduation, (Merriam
Webster s collegiate dictionary, 2017). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Kaplan (2013), students motivation levels are easily influenced through extrinsic forces
in schools. Such forces can be attributed to simple events such as prom and graduate night. It is
imperative to think of various solutions to this motivational issue because students who are planning
on attending a four year postsecondary institution might be at risk on losing their admission.
Furthermore, losing their admission at this stage can signify no other option than attending a
community college. It is important to note that though there are plenty of benefits in attending a
community college this paper will focus only on students who plan on attending a four year

Leave The Past Behind
As the matter of fact, the racial diversity in the world is increasing day by day. However, people just
need to find out how to live comfortably with other of different history s background. It is true that the
process to overcome the past between nations and the discrimination between races takes an amount
of time. Nevertheless, people nowadays are opening a new chapter of life. In reality, people all over
the world now do not think about the painful past, the war or whatsoever anymore; instead, they start
to shake hand, make business or lifting embargoes which last decades. In the essay, Vietnamese

Wride defined the 1.5 generation and explained the reasons for why young Vietnamese immigration
are not looking at the past anymore. According to the essay, author defined young Vietnamese who
now are living in the United States as 1.5 generation. The term is talking about young Vietnamese
people who were originally born in Vietnam but they grown up in America. And because these people
grew up in America, this group of people tends to have a little bit difference in the way of thinking or
to no longer look at the past to decide what to do for the future. In the essay Wride wrote: Generally,
they have not inherited their parents hatred of Communism or qualms about trading with a former
enemy. 1.5 generation is carefree about what happened to their parents, to their ancestry, relatives and
their people. Through several of 1.5 generation group s interviews, they are certain don t really want to
talk about the painful past which causes many lost for their parents, dead of their people anymore.
According to Tran, twenty two years old, he said his hatred toward Vietnam couldn t get to any place
closer and be comparable to that of his parents toward the Vietnam government. As Tran said, I might

The World There Are Many Cultures, And Religions
In the world there are many cultures, and religions. One of the oldest cultures, and religion is that of
Jewish people. Not being jewish makes you see Jewish people in a different light. Sometimes that
light is often very different that what reality is. By going through the life of a typical Jewish person for
a week you will be able to see just how they live and what types of things differ and are similar. And
what you will find is that most often times the differences are fewer than the similarities. Days go by
very normally for jewish people most of the time. Most of time they go about their day very similarly
to everyone else. Depending on the type of person they could go about their day differently. there are
only some jewish people that still live very traditionally like they use to in the old days. If you go
through a typical day of a jewish person this is what you would find out. When they wake up in the
morning they say their daily prayer, called service of the heart which means the first conscious
thought of the day. After they say their prayer they get ready for the day and they go to work. For
breakfast and all meals through out the day, they must be Kosher. Kosher is a way of preparation of
food, for a food to be kosher it must be prepared and presented in a way that god had intended it for.
This means that if you have dinner meats and vegetables and all separate foods must be separated.
Now days most Jewish people cook their food in the same kitchen just

My Experience At St. Xavier s Social Service Center
As a part of curriculum, every student of my high school has to do 100 hours to community service
before they graduate. Every student is assigned to a social service organization. In the same way, I was
assigned to work at St. Xavier s Social Service Center whose primary target was to help children who
lost their parents during civil war. I still remember the first day of my social service. As soon as I
entered the social service center, I was in a huge hall where more than 30 children were studying. The
hall had nothing but a thin carpet. Everyone was so surprised to see a new face. I introduced myself
and said that I was there to help them with their studies. After few minutes of ice breaker, everyone
continued with their works. After roaming for some time and helping some children with their work, I
saw a little boy in the middle of the hall. His feet was covered with a blanket. He seemed confused. I
went to him and asked if he had any problems. He was shy at first, but after sometime he told me that
he had problems solving his mathematics homework. I helped him and stayed with him until he
completed everything. He was quite a talented guy. He grabbed the concepts quickly. After an hour, it
was time for him to go to his school. He signaled one of his friend something. After few minutes, his
friend showed up with a wheel chair. This was when I realized that the kid didn t have his left leg. I
was surprised and shocked. After everyone left, I talked to the supervisor

Attitude And Sense Of Power In The Little Rock Nine
A person s place in society is decided by those who have power, nevertheless how one perceives
themselves influences that status. Looking deeply into the causes of Minnijean Brown s expulsion, it
is revealed that challenging episodes and the unjust actions of others all contributed towards the abrupt
end of her tormented days at Little Rock Central High School. If Minnijean had not faced the
prejudice and hatred so prevalent in the South during the late 1950 s, it is safe to say she would not
have felt the need to retaliate. At the start of the analysis, the documentary suggests that Minnijean is
expelled because she dumps chili on a white student s head; however, further investigation reveals
there is more to the story, and additional documentation indicates that the expulsion has less to do with
a specific incident and more to do with Minnijean s attitude and sense of place.
In the 1987, Eyes on the Prize, it is conveyed that Minnijean Brown is expelled from school when she
dumps a bowl of chili on a white student s head, knowing she would be facing consequences. Ernest
Green of the Little Rock Nine recollects, It was the first time that anybody . . . had seen someone
black retaliate in that sense (Doc. A). Even though Minnijean was the only one in control of her
actions, she had been harrassed for months, students calling her an n word. So when a white boy
decided to hound her in the lunch line, it can be interpreted that she was on her last straw. Craig Rains,

Life In Ancient Greece
The Greeks wore light, loose clothes as the weather was hot for most of the year. Long pieces of
colourful fabric were used to make the Greek clothes.
Men would wear a tunic, called a chiton. It was made out of large squares of linen or wool ( wool for
winter and linen for summer) held in place by pins at the shoulders and a belt around the waist
The women wore similar things to the men. They used pins in various places to hold it together.
Unlike the men s, the dresses always went down to the ankles.
The way children were educated was different in each city state.
In Sparta, reading and writing was unimportant. Boys learned to be good fighters.
In Athens citizens had to be educated to take part in voting in the Assembly. Athenian boys also went
to wrestling school each day, to learn many sports, not just wrestling. They had to be fit, to fight in ...

The Poem Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy
The poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy in relation to diversity alludes to specific aspects of gender,
mainly targeting the female gender perspective and expectations. In the poem, Piercy is writing about
a young girl transitioning from a child to a women and how society and its idea of beauty affects her.
My interpretation of the poem is that the girl is basically crying out for help saying look I am healthy,
intelligent, and strong but no one sees or cares about those things because the only thing they see
when they look at her is her outside appearance and what society considers to be the flaws that she
possesses. Although this was written in 1936 Piercy accurately describes the feeling of being defined
or constricted by society to think, act, and look a particular way which is similar to that of todays
society which is fueled by social media, where some find personal gratification and self confidence
fueled from likes and retweets they receive. Barbie doll is the perfect title for this poem because for
the longest time a Barbie was a sign of something perfect and beautiful, a toy enjoyed by everyone
and a conventional symbol for little girls all over the United States. Similarly the girl was conforming
to be sort of like the Barbie doll in a way because of societal expectations and the want to be viewed
in a particular light by ones peers.
The beginning of the poem or the first stanza has a lighthearted tone and then as it progresses it begins
to divulge into a deeper

Building Design of the Engineering and Computing Builiding...
Introduction
As an aspiring Architectural Technologist I will be expected to possess a variety of skills which are
valuable for any Architectural Technologist position. I will be studying and evaluating a building
design of the Engineering and Computing Building, Coventry. I am to assess the structure, identifying,
why the building was designed in the way it was, the impact, challenges and purposes. This will allow
me to understand the integration of architectural and structural design.
1.1 Design philosophy and aesthetics
The Engineering and Computing Building (ECB) was designed by Arup Associates and built by main
contractor Vinci. In designing this building Arup Associates were trying to create a sustainable
postmodern building, which would become a flagship for the university and a landmark in the centre
of the city. Designed to meet the university s long term needs in terms of improving the student
learning experience, using the building as a learning tool in itself.
The 15,000m² building is enclosed in a square, split into two L shaped blocks. Linked together by a
glazed entrance at the corner and separated by a large gap on the opposite corner.
The L block facing the south and west has been configured as the Nature block. This four storey
Nature wing features a green and blue roof planted with foliage, providing a variety of habitats to
encourage the local wildlife. Well known to attract insects that pipistrelle bats are known to prefer.

The Demise Of Cornelius Vanderbilt
Cornelius Vanderbilt was certainly a very important contributor to his field. Some people would even
argue that he, to a certain extent, invented his field. This is undoubtedly the case as the majority of
today s businessmen follow his example and act in ways that he invented by carrying out his actions.
In addition, Vanderbilt invested his fortune in railroads. Without railroads, today s society would not
only be vastly different, but it could also possibly be nonexistent. This is due to Vanderbilt s railroads
creating a societal dependency on his railroads. Vanderbilt had always been skilled at seeing promise
in fields that had promise. When he was young, Vanderbilt bought a sailboat and worked for a sailboat
shipping company, from which he made thousands of dollars per year. When he got older, Vanderbilt
saw promise in a field that others saw no promise in: Railroads. Vanderbilt saw that railroads and
steam trains had promise and were the way of the future; therefore, he decided to relocate his family
and began investing in his new industry. Amazingly, he was so confident in the field that he denied a
humongous raise in pay from his boss, who had offered Vanderbilt a raise before he left for his new
home. A lesson that industrialists who followed him learned from this is to search for an industry with
a lot of potential and then to invest in it. Vanderbilt found himself in a very unique situation as being
in his profession was, at that time, still very new and mostly

knowledge and share what she learned to all people from all backgrounds. The palimpsest is relevant
in the idea that Walker will become aware of it when she finally visits the land of her ancestors and

What Is Beowulf A Heroic Archetype
The notion of heroes is one that transcends time and space. Examples of heroes appear in almost every
culture and time period since humans first started writing. Even the very first piece of literature
written in the English language, Beowulf, is a classic example of a heroic archetype. We can also see
examples of heroes in today s culture, such as in Bonnie Tyler s song Holding Out For a Hero and in
Tina Turner s We Don t Need Another Hero . Additionally, we make predictions of what we think
heroes may be like in the future, like in the movie Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. Since heroes
appear in every culture, it s easy to see how important they are to society. What s harder to see is how
important society is to heroes. Societies put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

out there/ Love and compassion, their day is coming/All else are castles built in the air/ And I wonder

there may have been a previous hero that let down this society. This is seen when she mentions

the entirety of the song is about not needing heroes, it is a logical jump to assume that something was

without these qualities society will destroy itself. This is an interesting counterpoint to the entire

Journal Submission Analysis
Journal Submission 1 A very painful and enduring time in my life was when I was fifteen years old
and my father told me that I would never succeed in school or college. Ever since then, I have always
felt that I could never be smart enough for college and that I would probably just fail all of my courses
that I had planned to study. If it was not for my mom, who highly supports me with going to college, I
probably would not be attending college this year. I think having other positive family members has
really helped me to overcome my fears of failing my classes in college and that I am smart enough to
succeed in college and my life.
Before we did the guided essay in class, I would often forget to gather ideas and develop my topic for
my written assignment and so my paper would often look unfinished because it did not have a
supporting topic. I also would not draft my papers because I thought drafting was a waste of time.
Most of the papers that I have written did not get a good grade because I didn t know how important it
was to know all of the rules of writing an assignment. But after doing the guided essay in class, I
realized that drafting and gathering ideas for a topic sentence can help you when doing a written

so that I can learn new writing skills in class so that I can hopefully, pass this class with a good grade.
Participating with the teacher, I believe is also important because the teachers can help you if you are

Personality Traits and Eating Disorders in Wasted by...
In my research, I explored the world of eating disorders. I wanted to see if there was anything
specifically encouraging eating disorders and if there was a way to stop it. Eating disorders affect the
community greatly because often times, they go unchecked or unrecognized. As a recovered anorexic,
I feel it s very important to address this issue. It s a very big problem that is often not addressed at all,
or is seen as normal, like counting calories. I hoped to find a way to improve the way that eating
disorders are viewed and explain to people about what defines an eating disorder, because many
people will never know if it is not explicitly explained to them. My study s purpose is to bring light

Each has it s own criterion for being diagnosed, but they also have quite a bit in common. First, food
is the object of stress. The meaning of food is what becomes precarious to those with eating disorders.
It is viewed differently depending on the individual s upbringing and experiences. Some view it as the
enemy, some view it as a source of comfort. You don t have to be thin to have an eating disorder.
Anorexia Nervosa is the condition when an individual abstains from food in order to lose weight or
prevent more weight gain. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV(DSM IV)
there are four aspects of criteria to be diagnosed with anorexia: a refusal to maintain weight above
what is minimally normal for one s age and height, and extreme fear of weight gain, distorted body
image, and (in females) having amenorrhea(missing three or more consecutive menstrual cycles.)
(DSM IV, 2000:589) Anorexia not only affects weight, but also alters bone growth, neurotransmitters
and hormones in the brain, and electrolytes. Bulimia Nervosa refers to when an individual over eats
excessively and then takes action to purge the body of the intake. There are five criteria for Bulimia
Nervosa in the DSM IV, which include: recurring episodes of binge eating, recurring actions of
purging, the patterns must continue at least twice a week for three months or more, a huge emphasis
on body weight in self evaluation, and the actions must occur apart

The Effect Of Body Image On Women s Self Perceptions And...
Body image is a major concern in women s self perceptions and feelings about body satisfaction and
physical appearance. Individuals are at higher risk to experience negative body image issues if they
hold beliefs and cognitions about their physical appearance, regardless of body mass (Butters Cash,
1987). Over weight and appearance related issues often surfaces early in females development, and
continues throughout their lifespan. The importance of physical appearance is emphasized and
reinforced early in most girls development. Often times, body image becomes a problem when
females go through puberty (Striegel Moore Franko, 2002). In addition, most girls who express a
desire to be thinner are within the normal weight range for females their age (Striegel Moore et all).
Concerns with the development of disordered eating is of high importance due to the fact that body
dissatisfaction can lead to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. There has been a increasing number
of women who have reported disturbed body image and engaged in dieting. there has been a
significant level of concern about the increasing incidence of eating disorders and this is a major
concern in America (Polivy Herman, 2002). The media is a form of mass communication that has a

The Help (2011) is a drama set in the 1960s in Mississippi, United States, which successfully positions
audiences using various film techniques to convey the message that prejudice is a destructive force
that corrupts society. Three specific scenes will be analysed and evaluated, focusing on aspects such as
mise en scene, cinematography and post production. Tate Taylor and Kathryn Stockett provide a
detailed insight into the harsh lives of people showing three major types of prejudice against black
people, gender and class. Skeeter wishes to become a professional writer and decides to write about

In this scene a line of black maids are dressed in a monochrome uniform with solemn faces, this
signifies how insignificant they are in the white society. The black maids wore uniforms showing their
class status, symbolising where they belong in civilization while displaying they are on duty. Post
production used includes the voice over of Aibileen narrating her thoughts and what is happening. The
tone is dull and sad, emitting the perception that this period of time is daunting. The word daunting
contains negative connotations such as horrify and scare. A sharp d sound creates the impression of
words such as dangerous and deathly. A slight yellow tint in lighting emphasises the dim effect,
showing that the scene is darker than it seems, meaning that the maids are upset about their
predicament. However, they are obedient, in order to survive in white society, they must accept the
rules set out. Otherwise, they may face the consequences of losing their job which helps provide funds
for themselves and family, they would also risk not being able to find work anywhere else. This scene
shows the discrimination against black people and how downgraded they were classed, meaning that
their pay was limited. Therefore, with the combination of effective post production sound and
contrasting film techniques the producers effectively achieved their goal in displaying how
disrespected black people were seen in

Elizabeth Barrett Browning Discontent
Discontent by Elizabeth Barrett Browning Explication The sonnet Discontent by Elizabeth Barrett
Browning pinpoints two separate types of unhappiness, discontent led by a need to show unhappiness
despite superficial subject matter, and a quiet pain that with time distances one from discontent and
leads to submission to the will of God and the world. Browning examines these differences throughout
the poem and emphasizes the meaninglessness of discontent and the distance brought by pain to show
why the human race gravitates toward the superficial, until time forces a calm upon it. The structure of

Discontent is treated as a pest, an overblown complaint when the world doesn t fully embrace and
individual, leading them to run past it and find some other small disappointment. It buzzes along, until
time brings something worth complaining about, but that is instead a weight that sinks an individual
deeper into the sea. This true pain is treated as a concept that must be recognized as a God given gift
and punishment, as shown by the choice of transfix , both to pierce and to mesmerize, as it leads to
another fate, submission, which brings both acceptance about a world that we cannot change and an
end to the meaninglessness of discontent. This abstract discussion of the nature of unhappiness and the
acceptance of pain over the emptiness of discontent shows the sacrifices needed to become aware of
true human nature beyond the

The shifting of continents changed the Earth s landscape, altering weather patterns and overall climate

They say as mammals continued to evolve, they drove the dinosaurs into extinction ( What Killed the
Dinosaurs ). Not only did mammals likely compete with dinosaurs for resources, many species
survived the end Cretaceous extinction and subsequently came to dominate Earth. ( What Killed the
Dinosaurs? ). This is primarily because the early mammals were a lot smaller than the mammals that
exist today. Some of the world s earliest mammals were the multituberculates, a group of small rodent
like animals that first emerged on Earth about 165 million years ago. (Welsh, Jennifer). Scientists
predict that any mass extinction event that caused animals to go extinct affected larger animals than it
did the smaller animals, such as mammals ( Dinosaurs Became Extinct due to Laying Eggs ).
Mammals remained small for almost 100 million years, while they out competed small and baby
dinosaurs for food, shelter and resources until they were extinct. Once the dinosaurs were out of the
way mammals were able to evolve and grow large in size like the mammals that exist today today
(LiveScience). Fossil evidence sheds some light on this theory as well. Fossils of mammals believed
to date back to about eighty five million years ago show that mammals began to change rapidly and
grow. This matches up with other mammal groups, including recently discovered species from the

Character Analysis Of Good Will Hunting
The movie Good Will Hunting an American Drama Film was directed by Gus Van Sant, and starring
Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver and Stellan Skarsgard in 1997. This movie
is about a man named Good Will Hunting who was a genius but chose not to live as a genius because
of fear of past experiences and the ill treatment he received when he was in foster home. Some of the
other characters in the movie were supportive and some were not supportive of him. This essay
discusses Good Will s personality traits and his interaction with the other characters in the movie.
Good Will Hunting possessed the following personality traits, namely: independence, intense interest
in a problem, and the need for stimulation. Good Will Hunting was independent because he chose to
live his own way and not conforming himself to society s pressure. Good Will Hunting proved his
independence by self imposed limitation, meaning limiting his ability to enjoy complete freedom.
Throughout the movie, he rejected his natural talents or gifts and initially chose to stay in South
Boston with his friends. Like in the case with his girlfriend, Good Will Hunting refused to get close to
people with the fear of being rejected at the end. Moreover, he refused to get higher paying jobs as
was in the case of Sean Maguire, the psychology professor, who later became his counselor. It was
during these counselling sessions with Good Will Hunting that we learned, Sean Maguire, was also
talented in advanced mathematics, but rejected the opportunity to teach at Harvard and chose to teach
at a local community college instead. Similarly, Good Will Hunting chose to remain a janitor or a
construction worker where he was more comfortable. Not just did he poses the trait of independency,
he also had the character of intensity of interest in a problem. As per his intensity of interest in a
problem, Good Will Hunting would obsess about a problem that was presented to him until he had
discovered a solution. Some examples of this in the movie were the initial math problems on the
chalkboard where he could not stop working on them until he had a solution. Another is when he
completed the complex homework problem for his girlfriend Skylar

The Beggar s Opera Essay
The Beggars Opera by John Gay was written in 1728 as a response to the political state in London.
Gay moved to London with no expectation of writing a satirical musical. Coming from no money, no
title, and no useful contacts he tried to find his own destiny. He took a job as an apprentice to a silk
merchant in an attempt to build his status. After realizing that he did not want to pursue a career in
silk, he moved on to working in a theater. He was then offered a jobs working for different nobilities
in London, gaining substantial connections with various members of the arts community. Through his
time with the upper crust of London, he noticed a flaw in society. His view on the upper class along
with his connections, his love for music, and his ability to write poetry led to the writing of The
Beggar s Opera. By definition a musical has five essential elements: music and lyrics, a book/libretto,
choreography, staging, and a physical production. If this is the true standard of a musical, then I
believe The Beggar s Opera by John Gay is the first musical. First, various composers wrote the music

Military Ethics And The Military
Military ethics encompass a wide range of things. In the contemporary world, military ethics include
all facets of military behavior, from issuing regular reviews on juniors to relations of those in the
military with civilians to matters related to war. Currently, the world has witnessed technological
advancements in various sectors including the military. Indeed, battles between different nations have
become dominated by highly advanced weaponry especially when developed nations are involved. It
is these developments that have raised concerns over the use of highly sophisticated and deadly
weapons. Military ethics dictate how certain weapons should be used and circumstances under which
the military can use lethal force. Different nations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Military ethics, therefore, serve to ensure that only weapons that are universally accepted are used in
war (Gale, 2016). One fundamental principle of just war customs refers to efforts to make war as
compassionate as probable even for the military personnel. The Geneva resolution principles require
that soldiers who lay down their arms during battles be eligible for benevolent confinement by their
imprisoners. The captors are needed to provide them with food, medical care, and housing. Underlying
these ethics is the commonly shared belief that fighter is an impermanent status overriding an essential
common humanity of rivals. Humanitarian concerns over soldiers in the traditional military morals is
demonstrated by attempts to do away with weapons considered to be inhumane. Such efforts began
when the medieval church banned the crossbow since it was perceived to be too accurate and lethal
over long distances. Current world leaders and military leaders have categorized blinding lasers,
hollow point bullets, and the asphyxiating gas as unethical classes of technology that should not be
employed in war. Besides dictating how the military as a whole should conduct itself, military ethics
govern how military personnel should behave. Rules of conduct provide guidelines to those in the
military on standards of behavioral ethics. Those found culpable of violating the ethics are liable for
prosecution under the uniform code of military justice.

Suspense In The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe
My intrest of this story, was raised by the suspense and the tension throughout the story, not to
mention the blood and awe that builds the story slowly and then picks up the pace to the climax,
where the narrator raves to the police and cannot hide his crime anymore. I imagine, that i m in an
apartment with a nasty sense and with dark wood panelling and flooring. The furniture is musty or
dusty. This literary work left me both terrified and disgusted. I could not believe that a human being
could kill another person with such malice and for seemingly no reason. The part where the unnamed
character cuts up the old man s body and then shoves him under the floorboards, produced images in
my head that made it very hard for me to sleep that night! I think the unnamed character is a sociopath
because he killed the old man because of his eye. He even goes so far as to say in the ... Show more

The unnamed character who confesses to murder right since the beginning, it gets the audience to
wonder why he is mad, it is a great hook to get people interested. The description of the ugly eye,
waiting in the dark, the horror of the old man, the audacity of placing the police right above the dead
body, the beating heart, the ringing in his ear and the gushing confession are all so suspenseful, and
intense. Another reason that it is still widely read today is that it is relatively short and easy to
understand. People normally get tired of books with too many hard words, so they put it down but in
this story there aren t as many hard words and it The last reason is that it is still widely read today, is
because people now a days love that adrenaline rush, they read and watch horror/suspense movies just
to scare themselves, it gives them goosebumps, chills etc. The horror/suspense genre has become more
popular in the recent years. In the olden days there weren t as many horror movies released compared

Effects Of Exercise Versus Sedentary Lifestyle On Lung...
Effects of exercise versus a sedentary lifestyle on lung function for those who are asymptomatic
smokers
Since discovering the harmful effects of cigarette smoking to ones health, the United States has
worked hard to reduce the prevalence of illness and death attributable to this behavior. Based on recent
Gallup polls, the percent of people claiming to have smoked a cigarette within the past week has been
steadily declining since 1945 and the number of pack a day smokers is at the lowest point its ever been
(http://www.gallup.com/poll/1717/tobacco smoking.aspx).
According to the Center for Disease Control
(http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/diseases/copd.html), cigarette smoking is responsible for
80% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases. Smoking can be attributed to this class
of diseases because it causes lung damage and inflammation that can lead to COPD. Airways become
clogged as excess mucus accumulates to move tar out of the body, they become thick and enflamed,
and air sacs may lose their elasticity and become destroyed, all affecting gas diffusion capacity. A
nagging cough, shortness of breath, and due to the reduced oxygen levels in the blood, discoloration of
lips and fingernails are a few of the potential symptoms of this class of diseases.
The severity of one s reduced pulmonary function, as measured by forced expiratory volume in one
second (FEV1.0), is a marked mortality risk factor (Baughman, Marott, Lange, Andrew, Hnizdo,

The Book of 1 Samuel Essay
The Book of 1 Samuel
The book of 1 Samuel, a part of the Old Testament, sparks the dawn of the United Kingdom of Israel
by telling of its first king, Saul. Samuel is one of the first talked about pre literary prophets in the bible
perhaps because he anointed the first king of the United Kingdom. He is a prophet by definition
because he possessed the ability to converse with the almighty Yahweh. Samuel and Saul are key
players to the rise of the kingdom but Saul runs into trouble and disobeys God, which leads him to his
own inevitable demise. In 1 Samuel 28: 1 25 Yahweh guides Saul to his death because he has outright
deceived and disobeyed God. This passage sets an example to obey Yahweh; otherwise he will inflict

Saul had previously wiped out all of the mediums and wizards from the land because they were evil in
the eyes of Yahweh. Because of his realized hypocrisy, he disguised himself and visited the medium
his servants had sought out in Endor. He told the medium to call upon Samuel and so she immediately
suspected that he is Saul. She knew that her work was extremely illegal by Saul s court, so she became
afraid until he reassured her that he was permitting the act in that occasion. She then called upon
Samuel. Samuel apparently took over the medium s body or appears in some other way to Saul. So
Saul did what he came there for and asked for advise on his latest predicament. The irritated and
disturbed Samuel explained that Yahweh is taking away his kingdom and giving it to David because of
his disobedience of not carrying out the Lord s punishment against the Amalekites (according to Mc
Carter the dead had some way of knowing God s plans and had access to them). So, Saul fell to the
ground in anguish from the news and lack of energy caused by fasting. The medium quickly attended
to him and forced him to eat. Saul and his servants then left. And there the chapter ends. Yahweh took
the kingdom from Saul because Saul did not

  • 2. Downtown Houston Essay Downtown Houston is often associated with business, entertainment and plenty of traffic. However, over the next 5 years the center of our city will be focusing on building its reputation as a residential neighborhood. Houston has seen a major revitalization of the areas inside of the 610 loop, from the Heights, to Montrose, and Midtown. Many new high rises have been built in these up and coming neighborhoods over the last decade, resulting in an influx of residential living that has slowly crept toward downtown, but has never quite reached into the limits of the downtown area. Mostly attracting young urban professionals, empty nesters and small families, Downtown Houston is hoping to provide more housing options for just about any Houstonian interested in calling the area home. To show it means business, the city s Downtown s Living Initiative is going strong, offering $15,000 per unit in tax rebates developers who commit to building homes or undertake multifamily living projects. • 3. Imperialism In England And Germany The early 19th and 20th centuries in England and Germany were times that would define modern Europe for ages. While England had been a world superpower since the 1500 s, they had to compete with Germany, a new and emerging country. For in the newer countries, imperialism was giving the people a newfound sense of nationalism further empowering people. Modernizing industry at a rapid pace shaped the workforce, while political systems were beginning to change in England while taking shape in Germany. Yet, Germany s new found nationalism and industry ended up making them a stronger nation than England. In 1871, Realpolitik was at its height when Otto von Bismarck of Prussia formed Germany. Bismarck was appointed as the prime minister of Prussia to crush the growing power of the liberals. It was his job to instill conservative values while avoiding progressive thinking with Western Europe. Bismarck used war as a political tactic by getting into wars he knew could win for Prussia. He lured Denmark and France into war to beat them and add to a growing sense of pride and nationalism within the German states. Two houses of government formed with the aristocracy having more power than the lower house. The biggest downside of Bismarck getting into wars with surrounding countries was that Germany was not industrializing over this period of time. Although, once Germany unified, Bismarck was able to jumpstart the economy by implementing a series of laws that would help businesses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Id, Ego, And Superego In The Lady With The Pet Dog In Joyce Oates short story The Lady with the Pet Dog, the main character, Anna, represents the Id, Ego, and Superego characteristics defined by Sigmund Freud. Anna is facing her morals (Superego) and feelings (Id), being confined to a marriage and detesting her affair. Because Anna is forced to balance a failing marriage, and loving her husband, while also loving a man who s not her husband, and not loving him because she can t, builds stress inside her and leads to rash desires and actions. Anna displays Freud s Id characteristics throughout, the things she wants most are life and love. Anna is in the middle of a dysfunctional marriage and starts an affair with another man. Her Id psyche is prevalent when her husband says that he loves her, but she thinks about her lover saying ...if betraying him (her husband) it would give her life a center (Oates 239). Anna s unconscious immature Id psyche thinks that the only way for her to have a purpose in life is to be with her lover, only looking for pleasure and not thinking about the consequences (McLeod). The Id is overlooking the common logic, she is married and her lover is married too, which is morally wrong, overriding the Superego. Anna s Id can be compared to that of a child s, like a kid at the store who asks his mom for candy, and when she says no he decides to steal the candy. In contrast, Anna says ....of course she was married, permanently married (Oates 246). Anna still can t make up her mind about her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance Of Senioritis In Long Beach Colleges As a program coordinator for the Southern California College Advising Corps (SCCAC), a college access program that missions itself on improving college outcomes for low income, first generation, and underrepresented students, one of the biggest hurdles I have seen through my staff members has been combatting motivation levels during the second semester of a high school student s senior year. Overseeing the Long Beach district, every single one of the SCCAC advisors has experienced this phenomenon, especially during the spring semester. For most students at the Long Beach high schools, they gain a sense of senioritis after having completed their college and financial aid applications. Though the term is not talked in much detail in academic research, senioritis is a term the advisors have been hearing from their students more frequently. Senioritis is simply the lack of motivation or performance that high school seniors face as it gets closer to their possible graduation, (Merriam Webster s collegiate dictionary, 2017). ... Not being jewish makes you see Jewish people in a different light. Sometimes that light is often very different that what reality is. By going through the life of a typical Jewish person for a week you will be able to see just how they live and what types of things differ and are similar. And what you will find is that most often times the differences are fewer than the similarities. Days go by very normally for jewish people most of the time. Most of time they go about their day very similarly to everyone else. Depending on the type of person they could go about their day differently. there are only some jewish people that still live very traditionally like they use to in the old days. If you go through a typical day of a jewish person this is what you would find out. When they wake up in the morning they say their daily prayer, called service of the heart which means the first conscious thought of the day. After they say their prayer they get ready for the day and they go to work. For breakfast and all meals through out the day, they must be Kosher. Kosher is a way of preparation of food, for a food to be kosher it must be prepared and presented in a way that god had intended it for. In the same way, I was assigned to work at St. Xavier s Social Service Center whose primary target was to help children who lost their parents during civil war. I still remember the first day of my social service. As soon as I entered the social service center, I was in a huge hall where more than 30 children were studying. The hall had nothing but a thin carpet. Everyone was so surprised to see a new face. I introduced myself and said that I was there to help them with their studies. After few minutes of ice breaker, everyone continued with their works. After roaming for some time and helping some children with their work, I saw a little boy in the middle of the hall. His feet was covered with a blanket. He seemed confused. I went to him and asked if he had any problems. He was shy at first, but after sometime he told me that he had problems solving his mathematics homework. I helped him and stayed with him until he completed everything. He was quite a talented guy. He grabbed the concepts quickly. After an hour, it was time for him to go to his school. He signaled one of his friend something. After few minutes, his friend showed up with a wheel chair. This was when I realized that the kid didn t have his left leg. I was surprised and shocked. After everyone left, I talked to the supervisor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Attitude And Sense Of Power In The Little Rock Nine A person s place in society is decided by those who have power, nevertheless how one perceives themselves influences that status. Looking deeply into the causes of Minnijean Brown s expulsion, it is revealed that challenging episodes and the unjust actions of others all contributed towards the abrupt end of her tormented days at Little Rock Central High School. If Minnijean had not faced the prejudice and hatred so prevalent in the South during the late 1950 s, it is safe to say she would not have felt the need to retaliate. At the start of the analysis, the documentary suggests that Minnijean is expelled because she dumps chili on a white student s head; however, further investigation reveals there is more to the story, and additional documentation indicates that the expulsion has less to do with a specific incident and more to do with Minnijean s attitude and sense of place. In the 1987, Eyes on the Prize, it is conveyed that Minnijean Brown is expelled from school when she dumps a bowl of chili on a white student s head, knowing she would be facing consequences. Ernest Green of the Little Rock Nine recollects, It was the first time that anybody . . . had seen someone black retaliate in that sense (Doc. A). Even though Minnijean was the only one in control of her actions, she had been harrassed for months, students calling her an n word. So when a white boy decided to hound her in the lunch line, it can be interpreted that she was on her last straw. Craig Rains, a white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Poem Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy The poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy in relation to diversity alludes to specific aspects of gender, mainly targeting the female gender perspective and expectations. In the poem, Piercy is writing about a young girl transitioning from a child to a women and how society and its idea of beauty affects her. My interpretation of the poem is that the girl is basically crying out for help saying look I am healthy, intelligent, and strong but no one sees or cares about those things because the only thing they see when they look at her is her outside appearance and what society considers to be the flaws that she possesses. Although this was written in 1936 Piercy accurately describes the feeling of being defined or constricted by society to think, act, and look a particular way which is similar to that of todays society which is fueled by social media, where some find personal gratification and self confidence fueled from likes and retweets they receive. Barbie doll is the perfect title for this poem because for the longest time a Barbie was a sign of something perfect and beautiful, a toy enjoyed by everyone and a conventional symbol for little girls all over the United States. Similarly the girl was conforming to be sort of like the Barbie doll in a way because of societal expectations and the want to be viewed in a particular light by ones peers. • 16. The Demise Of Cornelius Vanderbilt Cornelius Vanderbilt was certainly a very important contributor to his field. Some people would even argue that he, to a certain extent, invented his field. This is undoubtedly the case as the majority of today s businessmen follow his example and act in ways that he invented by carrying out his actions. In addition, Vanderbilt invested his fortune in railroads. Without railroads, today s society would not only be vastly different, but it could also possibly be nonexistent. This is due to Vanderbilt s railroads creating a societal dependency on his railroads. Vanderbilt had always been skilled at seeing promise in fields that had promise. When he was young, Vanderbilt bought a sailboat and worked for a sailboat shipping company, from which he made thousands of dollars per year. When he got older, Vanderbilt saw promise in a field that others saw no promise in: Railroads. Vanderbilt saw that railroads and steam trains had promise and were the way of the future; therefore, he decided to relocate his family and began investing in his new industry. Amazingly, he was so confident in the field that he denied a humongous raise in pay from his boss, who had offered Vanderbilt a raise before he left for his new home. A lesson that industrialists who followed him learned from this is to search for an industry with a lot of potential and then to invest in it. Examples of heroes appear in almost every culture and time period since humans first started writing. Even the very first piece of literature written in the English language, Beowulf, is a classic example of a heroic archetype. We can also see examples of heroes in today s culture, such as in Bonnie Tyler s song Holding Out For a Hero and in Tina Turner s We Don t Need Another Hero . Additionally, we make predictions of what we think heroes may be like in the future, like in the movie Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. This quote hints that there may have been a previous hero that let down this society. This is seen when she mentions something to rely on, insinuating that they previously put their faith in something unreliable and since the entirety of the song is about not needing heroes, it is a logical jump to assume that something was a person. This quote also hints that love and compassion may be more important than heroes and that without these qualities society will destroy itself. This is an interesting counterpoint to the entire concept of having heroes in the first place and has a solid foundation in reality. Elizabeth Barrett Browning Discontent Discontent by Elizabeth Barrett Browning Explication The sonnet Discontent by Elizabeth Barrett Browning pinpoints two separate types of unhappiness, discontent led by a need to show unhappiness despite superficial subject matter, and a quiet pain that with time distances one from discontent and leads to submission to the will of God and the world. Browning examines these differences throughout the poem and emphasizes the meaninglessness of discontent and the distance brought by pain to show why the human race gravitates toward the superficial, until time forces a calm upon it. The structure of Discontent creates a dichotomy between the quiet of pain and submission to the will of the world and the shifts in attention move the human race ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Discontent is treated as a pest, an overblown complaint when the world doesn t fully embrace and individual, leading them to run past it and find some other small disappointment. It buzzes along, until time brings something worth complaining about, but that is instead a weight that sinks an individual deeper into the sea. This true pain is treated as a concept that must be recognized as a God given gift and punishment, as shown by the choice of transfix , both to pierce and to mesmerize, as it leads to another fate, submission, which brings both acceptance about a world that we cannot change and an end to the meaninglessness of discontent. This abstract discussion of the nature of unhappiness and the acceptance of pain over the emptiness of discontent shows the sacrifices needed to become aware of true human nature beyond the ... Zach and I took an early lead with one taco eaten, quickly followed by Blake. Taco after taco our time on this earth seemed limited as our stomachs began to swell. Bryce conceded early after just 4 ½ tacos was just too much in that short amount of time. By this point, Blake had surpassed Zach and me, as well as Cam. We all had consumed about six tacos nearing the final minute as Blake began to bit into his seventh. That is when Zach decided he could go no longer. Cam, Corey and I were so still going weakly, gasping as Blake was beginning his eighth taco and we were each still at the seventh taco mark. Corey took a bite of taco seven and felt that life was more of a struggle than a privilege in that moment. That left the contest with just three. The shifting of continents changed the Earth s landscape, altering weather patterns and overall climate ( Dinosaur Extinction Theories ). Also, over a long period of time, climate gradually changed. They say as mammals continued to evolve, they drove the dinosaurs into extinction ( What Killed the Dinosaurs ). Not only did mammals likely compete with dinosaurs for resources, many species survived the end Cretaceous extinction and subsequently came to dominate Earth. ( What Killed the Dinosaurs? ). This is primarily because the early mammals were a lot smaller than the mammals that exist today. Some of the world s earliest mammals were the multituberculates, a group of small rodent like animals that first emerged on Earth about 165 million years ago. (Welsh, Jennifer). Scientists predict that any mass extinction event that caused animals to go extinct affected larger animals than it did the smaller animals, such as mammals ( Dinosaurs Became Extinct due to Laying Eggs ). Mammals remained small for almost 100 million years, while they out competed small and baby dinosaurs for food, shelter and resources until they were extinct. Once the dinosaurs were out of the way mammals were able to evolve and grow large in size like the mammals that exist today today (LiveScience). Fossil evidence sheds some light on this theory as well. Fossils of mammals believed to date back to about eighty five million years ago show that mammals began to change rapidly and grow. This matches up with other mammal groups, including recently discovered species from the Late Cretaceous (between 100 million and 65 million years ago) showing highly specialized ... • 39. Character Analysis Of Good Will Hunting The movie Good Will Hunting an American Drama Film was directed by Gus Van Sant, and starring Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver and Stellan Skarsgard in 1997. This movie is about a man named Good Will Hunting who was a genius but chose not to live as a genius because of fear of past experiences and the ill treatment he received when he was in foster home. Some of the other characters in the movie were supportive and some were not supportive of him. This essay discusses Good Will s personality traits and his interaction with the other characters in the movie. Good Will Hunting possessed the following personality traits, namely: independence, intense interest in a problem, and the need for stimulation. Good Will Hunting was independent because he chose to live his own way and not conforming himself to society s pressure. Good Will Hunting proved his independence by self imposed limitation, meaning limiting his ability to enjoy complete freedom. Throughout the movie, he rejected his natural talents or gifts and initially chose to stay in South Boston with his friends. Like in the case with his girlfriend, Good Will Hunting refused to get close to people with the fear of being rejected at the end. Moreover, he refused to get higher paying jobs as was in the case of Sean Maguire, the psychology professor, who later became his counselor. It was during these counselling sessions with Good Will Hunting that we learned, Sean Maguire, was also talented in advanced mathematics, but rejected the opportunity to teach at Harvard and chose to teach at a local community college instead. Similarly, Good Will Hunting chose to remain a janitor or a construction worker where he was more comfortable. Not just did he poses the trait of independency, he also had the character of intensity of interest in a problem. As per his intensity of interest in a problem, Good Will Hunting would obsess about a problem that was presented to him until he had discovered a solution. Some examples of this in the movie were the initial math problems on the chalkboard where he could not stop working on them until he had a solution. Another is when he completed the complex homework problem for his girlfriend Skylar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Beggar s Opera Essay The Beggars Opera by John Gay was written in 1728 as a response to the political state in London. Gay moved to London with no expectation of writing a satirical musical. Coming from no money, no title, and no useful contacts he tried to find his own destiny. He took a job as an apprentice to a silk merchant in an attempt to build his status. After realizing that he did not want to pursue a career in silk, he moved on to working in a theater. He was then offered a jobs working for different nobilities in London, gaining substantial connections with various members of the arts community. Through his time with the upper crust of London, he noticed a flaw in society. His view on the upper class along with his connections, his love for music, and his ability to write poetry led to the writing of The Beggar s Opera. By definition a musical has five essential elements: music and lyrics, a book/libretto, choreography, staging, and a physical production. If this is the true standard of a musical, then I believe The Beggar s Opera by John Gay is the first musical. Military ethics, therefore, serve to ensure that only weapons that are universally accepted are used in war (Gale, 2016). One fundamental principle of just war customs refers to efforts to make war as compassionate as probable even for the military personnel. The Geneva resolution principles require that soldiers who lay down their arms during battles be eligible for benevolent confinement by their imprisoners. The captors are needed to provide them with food, medical care, and housing. Underlying these ethics is the commonly shared belief that fighter is an impermanent status overriding an essential common humanity of rivals. Humanitarian concerns over soldiers in the traditional military morals is demonstrated by attempts to do away with weapons considered to be inhumane. Such efforts began when the medieval church banned the crossbow since it was perceived to be too accurate and lethal over long distances. Current world leaders and military leaders have categorized blinding lasers, hollow point bullets, and the asphyxiating gas as unethical classes of technology that should not be employed in war. Besides dictating how the military as a whole should conduct itself, military ethics govern how military personnel should behave. He is a prophet by definition because he possessed the ability to converse with the almighty Yahweh. Samuel and Saul are key players to the rise of the kingdom but Saul runs into trouble and disobeys God, which leads him to his own inevitable demise. She knew that her work was extremely illegal by Saul s court, so she became afraid until he reassured her that he was permitting the act in that occasion. She then called upon Samuel. Samuel apparently took over the medium s body or appears in some other way to Saul. So Saul did what he came there for and asked for advise on his latest predicament. The irritated and disturbed Samuel explained that Yahweh is taking away his kingdom and giving it to David because of his disobedience of not carrying out the Lord s punishment against the Amalekites (according to Mc Carter the dead had some way of knowing God s plans and had access to them).
