A2 Media Studies –
Response to Brief
By Tom Ibbott
The Brief
 A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo
video, together with two of the following three options:
 A website homepage for the band
 A digipak for the album's release
 A magazine advertisement for the digipak
Music Video
What song will I choose?
 I made an initial list of around about 20 songs that I thought would make a good music video.
From there I decided to limit it down to the five best ones that I thought would work well in
terms of storyline and editing.
 My final five song choices were:
 ‘Message In A Bottle’ – The Police
 ‘You Got To Go’ – Above & Beyond [MJ Cole Remix]
 ‘I See Fire’ – Ed Sheeran [Kygo Remix]
 ‘Runaway (U&I)’ – Galantis
 ‘Anywhere’ – Passenger
 In the end, I decide the song that would work best would be ‘Anywhere’ by Passenger. This is because it’s a up-beat song with
a good beat making it quite an easy one to edit. The pace is also comfortable, which would make it easier for the audience to
follow. The storyline would also make a good video. It talks going anywhere with one person, which would make a good video
because the video could involve a lot of fast paced shots to incorporate the ‘leaving’ or ‘running away’ perhaps that are
suggested by ‘going anywhere, engaging the audience and making it more exciting and fun.
Editing
 As the song I’m using has a fast pace and clear rhythm, I want there to be a
lot of short shots. These would then be edited together with a fast cutting
rate, so that the video can keep up with the music.
 I would use a small amount of lip syncing throughout the video. I would not
have any live performance shots, because I don’t think they would really work
for this particular song, because it wouldn’t link into the storyline, however
at times the two main characters would lip sync the ‘I’d go anywhere with
you’ part of the song. I would use my editing skills to then ensure the lip
syncing is at exactly the right point.
 The majority of my shots would be two shots or shots of a character with a
photograph of the other one.
Storyline
 The main theme of the song is about running away from everything with just
one other person. The main lyrics are ‘I’d go anywhere with you’
 The main theme is going to be do with a long-distance relationship
 I would like to focus on a lot of the positives, because the song is quite up
beat and happy
 The storyline throughout the video would involve these two people missing
each other when they’re apart, but having a great, enjoyable time when
they’re together. They become sick if the time they are spending apart to the
extent that at the end of the video, they pack bags and just leave together,
hand in hand.
ARTIST PROFILE: Passenger
 Mike Rosenberg is an indie-folk/country singer, who goes by the stage name of
Passenger.
 He formerly fronted a band named ‘/Passenger.’ and after their dissolve in
2009, he kept the name for his solo career.
 His most successful single ‘Let Her Go’ has topped the charts in 19 countries.
 He has released 7 solo albums: Wide Eyes Blind Love, Divers & Submarines,
Flight Of The Crow, All The Little Lights, Whispers, Whispers II, Young As The
Morning Old As The Sea.
 He has toured five times around the world
Website Homepage
Software
 Nowadays there are so many different types of web design software. There
are programs such as Dreamweaver & WebPlus, as well as online web
designers such as Wix, Jimdo & Weebly.
 I would use either Wix or Jimdo, they are both software I have experience
with using already. They’re very easy to use and I enjoy using it. In both, you
can select a template and work from there to build your ideal looking
website. This also saves time and is a lot quicker to build your finished
website than if using Dreamweaver or WebPlus.
Design
 I would choose a template design that gave me the ability to make the artist’s
name really stand out on the very first page. It would also have a space for
song snippets so that the audience can listen to who they’re reading about.
This should also help the audience decide whether they want to go further
into the site or not.
 I only have to create a website homepage, however I would still have
navigation tabs to show what the other web pages would be called and show
that I can make hyperlinks work.
 There would also be plenty of images to present who the page is about so the
audience have a visual aid.
Website Homepage Mockup
Album
What kind of album?
 It would be a ‘Greatest Hits’ album for Passenger. It would include 14 songs on
one disc and the second disc would be a ‘Best of’ DVD, which would take the
best video clips and moments from Passenger’s various tours. I would select
the songs based on popularity with fans and which are the most well known.
 They would all be taken from a variety of albums to make this one large
album. Passenger has released seven studio albums, however a ‘Greatest Hits’
has never been made. From research, I know that this is something a lot of
Passenger fans have been calling out for.
