This document provides guidance for a music video assignment. It includes sections for idea generation, research, pre-production assessment, visual planning and storyboarding. The student has selected the song "There She Goes" by The La's for their music video. Their idea is to create an aesthetic video featuring a girl getting away from something. Shots will include the girl and friends in locations like parks and streets. Pre-production planning addresses the equipment, locations, facilities and personnel needed. A storyboard is included with 13 shots planned to match the structure and pace of the song.
Hadj Ounis's most notable work is his sculpture titled "Metamorphosis." This piece showcases Ounis's mastery of form and texture, as he seamlessly combines metal and wood to create a dynamic and visually striking composition. The juxtaposition of the two materials creates a sense of tension and harmony, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between nature and industry.

2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. Two People- Sam Fender
Idea 1
Slow paced and dark setting
Tell a story
Dysfunctional relationship
• One partner wants to get out the relationship
• Abusive?
• One sided?
• Calling out for help
Young couple similar age to the target audience
6. Two People- Sam Fender
Idea 2
Happy, upbeat, positive
Bringing the couple closer together
Again a Young couple similar age to the target
audience
Childhood couple
• Shows their relationship progressing
• Tells the story from when they go together to
now
• People are doubting them because they are
young however they prove everyone wrong
7. Two People- Sam Fender
Idea 3
Dark atmosphere
One sided love?
Two Friends and one of the friends is in love with
the other friend but she doesn’t know
The girl ends up getting into a relationship and
the boy is really hurt and ends up getting violent
and doing things he regrets
8. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
9. Harry Styles- sign of the times music video
This music video focuses on one main character (harry styles the
singer of the song) who is in a remote setting . Throughout the music
video the shots switch between close up shots of him singing and
specific features of his body, in particular his hands and longshots of
the setting around him.
I think this music video would have had quite a big budget but
potentially not the biggest as there is some special effects shots of
him floating, however there is not any actors or actresses involved In
this music video it is just simply the singer throughout the whole
video. Also there is only one location right through the music video.
10. Sam Fender- Leave fast music video
I don’t think this music video had a very big budget because the locations he is
filming at are very relatable and everyday places, for example a high street and
outside a pub.
Also a lot of the shots are made to look like home videos and are filmed quite
casually with no special effects or anything.
I think the target audience for this music video would be 16-25 year old’s as
some of the places filmed look like they were quite old places that maybe some
of the younger generation would not be able to relate to as much.
Some shots used in the music video include, perspective shots , establishing
shots and extreme close ups.
The effect of using establishing and perspective shots is so the audience feel like
they re there with you and are apart of the video.
11. Two door cinema club- what you know music video
unlike the other music videos where the video only really focuses on
the singer this music video includes more than just the band as they
have several back up dancers.
The majority of the dancing especially at the start is all done to the
beat, from research and watching music videos I have found that
this is a common feature in music videos.
The video alternates between zooming in on both, the singers and
the dancers.
I don’t this this video will have had a massive budget as the location
is the same all the way through and looks like it could have just
been filmed in a studio and there is no special effects or anything.
12. Kate Nash– Foundations music video
Unlike some of the others of music videos this one goes with the
lyrics and tells us a story of dysfunctional couple.
I feel like this music video would have had a decent budget as
towards the end of the video it includes some special effects,
however even though the setting is really busy and includes a lot of
props, all these props are everyday things that are easily accessible
In this music video we follow the girl through her experience so
there is a lot of close ups of her individually however there is also
mid shots of the both of them together. There is also the odd
establishing shot so we can can see what type of setting they are in
13. Fleetwood mac – everywhere music video
This music video is a visual depiction of the poem “the highway man”
by Alfred Noyes
I think this music video would have had a big budget because of the
set and the costumes they are wearing.
In this music video there is a variety of different shots and angles
including; close up, long shots and perspective shots.
14. POTENTIAL SONGS
• blue lights by Jorja Smith
• These streets by Paolo Nutini
• there she goes by the La’s
• Friday I’m in love by the cure
•Dog days are over by Florence + the machine
•Chelsea dagger by the Fratellis
16. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USEMain settings- settings that are easily accessible and
places that can create mystery for example parks, cities,
studios etc
Mise-en-scene- create a retro look with costume,
lighting and setting
Focuses on the main artsist
Narrative
Medium and low angle shots and long and wide shots
used as establishing shots
Shots are usually cut either fast or slow to reflect the
pace of the song
Black and white effect is commonly used in the indie
genre
18. SUMMARY
I think doing a aesthetic music video instead of one that
has a narrative behind it makes it easier for me as I am
not restricted to one location or character for example.
Another opputunity is that I think it is going to be very
achievable as when I was thinking of doing a music video
with a narrative behind it I came up with loads of good
ideas but nothing was going to be achievable.
19. SUMMARY
One limitation I have is locations as it would cost me a bit
of money to travel to different locations for example
leeds or something so I just want to film in york however
that means ii am limited as there is only so much I can
film in york and would prefer to have a lot of different
locations featuring. Another limitation I might face is
weather as because the song gives off a positive tone I
want the weather to be nice and not raining in my music
video. Another limitation I could face is if the people that
I will be using In my music video are not able to make it.
20. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
There she goes by the La's
The La's were an english indie rock band from Liverpool,
originally active from 1983 until 1992.The La's are best
known for their hit single 'there she goes'.
Some associated acts are the lightning seeds, cast,
thecresent, the cherry boys and the onset
Indie rock: originally used to describe independent recod
labels, the term became associated with the music they
produced and was initially used interchaneably with
alternative rock.
21. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysi
s of track
[consider
meaning,
content,
duration, pace
and style of the
song]
There she goes has gained a reputation for being about the use of heroin,
possibly because of the lines 'there she goes again...racing through my
brain...pulsing through my vein'.
Structurally There she goes again is very simple and no verses just a single
chorus repeated 5 times.
There she goes is 2:42 (album version) and 2:31 (single version)
I would say the song is quite fast paced and gives off a positive tone because
of this.
22. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
For my music video I am going to do an aesthetic video.
Because the genre of there she goes is indie rock I
thought it would fit, I am going to film in places that are
typically used in indie music videos and follow the
conventions for example do some of my shots in black
and white.
24. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
25. There she goes- the La's
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
Getting away
from something,
maybe she has
left him
Cant' stop
thinking of
her
Can't hide the
feelings he still
has for her
Establishin
g shot,
location
Cut to the
beat
There she blows
There she blows again
Pulsing through my
veins
And I just can't
contain
This feeling that
remains
Loses her temper
Angers him Still can't help but
have feelings for her
26. There she goes
There she goes again
She calls my name
She pulls my train
No one else could heal
my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that
remains
Tries to stop him
going
somewhere
No one else
can make him
happy like this
girl does
Mood-Overall the mood throughout this song is very upbeat and positive
even though the lyrics might not be the happiest.
Pace- it is quite a fast paced song so I have more options as to what shots
I want to film.
Structure- most of the verses are repeated throughout the song.
Tone- positive tone
27. Techniqual Equipment
needed
-camera
-spare camera battery
-spare memory card
-phone
-phone charger
For my music video I am going to have the camera following a girl
around who will be the main character in the music video. I am
going to have a mixture of medium, low angle, establishing and
longshots that will vary between black and white and normal to
create the indie look. The narrative behind my music video is going
to be that the girl is getting away from something. I am going to
edit the shots to the match the beat at the start of the music video.
For the setting I am going to film in locations such as; parks,
streets, quite abandoned places as these are the general locations
in a indie music video. The girl in my music video is going to wear
very retro clothing for example wide leg/flared jeans and a shell
suit jacket.
28. Locations
I am going to film in town because I can film in the
streets, parks, alleys and near the graffiti walls and
it is easily accessible so its ideal as I only have to
pay for the bus. However I will have to chose a day
when it isnt raining as I want my video to be bright
and upbeat.
Equipment
I am going to be using my own camera to film the
video. I will also take a spare memory card and
battery, I am also going to taake my phone to film
on just incase.
29. FACILITIES
I will be editing my music video on premier pro on the macs
at college.
We are in college on a mondsy, tuesday and wednesday so I
will be editing it in this time.
30. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it?
What are each team members
strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external
performers? When are they available?
Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping
you?
I am going to use my friend Lucy in my music video. Her
strengths are her fashion sense/general look as it is what
I am going for however her weakness is that she can be
shy sometimes.
Liv and I have also said we will help each other out if
needed with filming and editing. Livs strengths are that
she is not shy and will do anything however her style is
slightly different to what I am going for in my music
video
My friend Lloyd is also going to be in my music video
because I wanted to include skateboards and he can
skate, this is a strength however like Lucy he can be a bit
shy.

33. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
34. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

39. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
40. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
42. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
43.
44.
45.
46. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

49. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
50. LOCATIONS

Vintage shop-shot8?-expressions 12 Walmgate, York
Again if it busy I will probably not be able to film there either
51. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
53. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
55. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
56. SCHEDULE
Day Plan
Monday Film some clips of lucy in town
Thursday Film some more clips of lucy
and get shots of Lloyd skating
Saturday Get the shots of olivia
57. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
