What are the patterns of global
use and consumption of food,
energy and water?
Resource consumption
• The average African consumes around 10KG of
resources a day. How much does the average North
American consumes?
A. 50
B. 70
C. 90
Watch this to see just how much is consumed in New
York each day!

1. Food Consumption
• Have a look at this map and see who consumers
the most?
1. Global Food Consumption
• Watch this clip (SS Earth food) from 21.23.
• Across the world people in developed countries
consume high levels of food (over 3000 calories a
day). In the developing world levels are low (under
2000 calories a day)
• The world has enough food for everyone but often
it is not distributed to those who need it most.
• This has lead to patterns of obesity and famine in
different parts of the world.

2. Global Energy Use and
consumption
2. Global Energy Use and
consumption
• This depends upon where the fossil fuel is and also the
ability to harness renewable energy.
• Coal and oil reserves are high in the Middle East but due to
government instability the supply may not always be
consistent. Likewise getting energy from renewable
resources depends on how much of that recourse (e.g.
wind, sunlight, etc.) is available. E.g. Scotland is the windiest
place in Europe HERE
• Developing countries like China and India are consuming
more and more energy as their standards of living increase.
E.g rising car ownership in India. Watch here from 48.15 (India on
4 wheels)
• USA has 5% of worlds population but consumes 25% of the
oil.

3. Global Water Use and
Consumption
3. Global Water Use
• The consumption varies depending upon how
developed a country is and how much water is
available.
• Some areas such as rainforests receive more water
than they need leading to a water surplus.
• Others have a deficit, as they have low levels of
rainfall and have high levels of evaporation and
transpiration.
• Only 3% of worlds water is available globally to be
used for drinking water. Watch here from 4.14.

do you need?

• Now is your change to make a poem about the
resource use and consumption globally
• Three stanzas, one on each resource (energy, food

• E.g.
• I love food and so does the rest of the UK
• We are wealthy and can buy what we may
