CASE: HIGHER EDUCATION IN AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
(Factors Contributing towards Achievement of Higher Education in Vietnam)
INTRODUCTION:
A study by the Chronicle of Higher Education and American Public Media’s
Marketplace (2012) suggested that earning a degree in today's job market allows
a person to apply for positions that he or she may not be able to apply for
without a degree. Earning a degree gives a person more opportunities than a
person without a degree. In this current job market, a degree is very valuable. In
Vietnam, traditionally, higher education has always been highly regarded, stated
by Truong My Hoa (2016), former vice president of Vietnam. The government
of Vietnam expects its higher education system to be advanced by modern
standards and highly competitive in international terms (Harman, et al 2010).
Research problem:
Advanced societies are in a process of transformation from industrial to
knowledge societies, i.e. social realities are being shaped by knowledge-based
processes and reflective enlightenment. Society and the economy are
concentrating more and more around knowledge (Peer Pasternak et al, 2015).
And according to Dr. Allen (2007) Higher education, theoretically, will enable
individuals to expand their knowledge and skills, express their thoughts clearly
in speech and in writing, grasp abstract concepts and theories, and increase their
understanding of the world and their community.
In Vietnam, despite the tradition of high regard for education, as the economy
is growing rapidly, the workforce remains reliant on the availability of
unskilled labor (Harman, et al 2010). The rate of high school students in
Vietnam advancing to colleges has dropped significantly as stated by Pro. Tran
Xuan Nhi, (2016) the deputy minister of education, in a recent press interview.
The purpose of this paper is to understand how higher education can contribute
to a person’s career development and identify the elements which restrict a
person from obtaining higher education in the Province of Bac Ninh, the hub of
industrial parks. The results of this research, aim to be used as a guide for high
school students in making one of the most important lifetime decisions. The
research also aims to be a reference for the local government in order to have a
transparent view of the impact of education level in the local job market.

Research Objectives:
The main objective of this research is to understand how higher education can
contribute to a person’s career development. Therefore, I would like to be able
to achieve the following objectives:
1. To understand the relationship of higher education to career development in
Vietnam
2. To identify the elements which hinder high school students from obtaining
higher education after graduating from high school.
3. To identify the differences in career development of students with high
school diplomas and college degrees.
In order to achieve the above objectives, the following research questions were
posed for this study:
1. Is there a relationship between higher education and career development?
2. Do elements such as motivations, family influence, affordability affect the
students’ decision in obtaining higher education.
3. Are there differences in career development of students with high school
diploma and college degrees?

behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself (google, 2017)
 Affordability: The extent to which something is affordable, as measured
by its cost relative to the amount that the purchaser is able to pay
