1. Research Script
Written by George Wetton
Throughout these past two weeks. I have spent my time researching
into previous existing products and facts which will help contribute
to my production. I have spent a long time working on this part of
the project because it is essential that I gather up enough
inspiration that will be needed for when it comes to selling the
product. As well still making sure that I retain and create more
originality that will be needed. My biggest inspirations when I was
going into this documentary was movies âShaun of the deadâ and âEvil
deadâ. Two zombie films that I feel deliver comedic timing perfectly
and have plots. Despite the fact that my project isnât about
zombies. The biggest source of help that has helped when looking at
existing products is the posters. They feel ground, minimal and yet
the attention to detail is definitely very interesting. There are
many things put int these posters. They crafted and design in a way
that they are kept very minimal but have many colours or particular
objects that connotate to some meaning of the film. Everything has
been placed in the poster has a meaning which is an aspect that I
admire.
To save time. I donât want to go through every aspect that I
analysed when doing my research because that would take a few hours,
but I will briefly summarise what were most important points that I
had picked up on from doing this research. The surveys I felt like I
had exceled further down the line with them. Then I have any other
year. Not just looking at Microsoft teams but also looking at
Instagram stories and interviews. I feel like have achieved both a
qualitive and quantitative research in all three of these. Whilst
getting a good grasp as to my audience are. My subject research was
another element which was lot more beneficial than I thought it
would be. I needed that knowledge of horror. Looking at the
evolution of horror and seeing why horror has evolved into what it
is today. Was the most intuitive research that I had to do. Also
looking towards the future of horror and seeing the impact that it
has had. It was something which was needed when doing my research.
Another interesting element was looking into the many different sub-
genres too. You need a subgenre in your horror film or else it will
look like a student film and wonât look proper.
Another part of my research which I found to be massive beneficial
factor to my FMP was researching into the existing posters because
despite them being quite minimal in tone and colour. Unlike the
products I was able to make all sorts of different connections when
looking at them. It also gave me variety of different ideas that I
will want to apply for my own. Such as using skull connection in
some sort of way. Whilst all the products I had looked at benefited.
It was the study into the posters that helped me the most. Whilst
the trailers were a bit more difficult. I was still able to pick
2. several things that were common and how they link to my final
product. Take âget outâ as an example. The constant flashes and
irregular flow of shot usage is something which I want to try and
recreate. Constantly dipping in and out of shots with dialogue being
a slow shot and then variation of different images popping up in
fast cuts. Make the viewer more engaged because its very unnatural
and really quite difficult to watch because of the speeds of each
shot. However, this also makes it more engaging for the audience
because it also depends on whatâs in the shot thatâs keeping them
hooked. Having a rather unique speed layout of the trailer like âget
outâ this will be something that I will be going over when I do my
shot list of timings for the trailers.
Overall, I am extremely happy with research that has been conducted
over the past two weeks. The final product is an excerpt taken out
of a book Iâve been writing. So, whilst I had a general idea of them
themes, colours etc. The type of design elements that I would have
for the promotional stuff that I will be advertising for the FMP. In
terms of posters layouts and trailer structures. I didnât have a
clue on. Plus, whilst I am an avid horror fan. I didnât feel 100%
confident promoting something that was horror without knowing the
full inâs and outs. Having looked at different horror films and
seeing what effect they had made to the horror history. I can
confidently say that I will be able to balance the comedy and horror
elements at a point where it can be classified as a dark humour and
not have one genre dominating the other.
