The document is a self-evaluation by the author of their genre research process for creating a romantic film trailer. The author analyzed existing trailers and posters to understand conventions of the genre. They recorded shot types in trailers to choose shots that effectively promote elements of their own trailer. The author created an animatic, survey, and production pitch to plan their trailer. They developed concepts through writing, visual documents, and a script while researching composition and institutions. Risk assessments and a production plan were made to prepare for filming. Audience feedback was incorporated to further develop the concepts.
2. Genre research- self evaluation
At the start of my research I started to analyse different
shot types within film trailers. This helped me to
understand what sort of shots are conventional for a
romantic film trailer. It also helped me notice the
effects of these shots. I also analysed a few posters
and summarised my finding in small videos. This
enabled me to learn what is conventional for poster
which will help me when creating my ancillary
products. Through my evaluation of these posters I
decided that on my use of image. I decided I would
use a montage of images to fully reveal the
relationship of my two main character and highlight
the importance of the characters within the film. It also
shows the use of text and how the left third is use to
effectively promote the film. The title is usually the
biggest text appearing on the poster. I feel I was able
to effectively analyse these posters to understand
what would be effective in creating my own product.
3. I also analysed a promotional package and
a presentation of what you would expect
from a romantic film trailer. From this I learnt
that there should be a theme between the
poster and magazine so that they can be
associated with the film. For example the
same use of font and colour on the title of the
film.
I recorded every shot within a
trailer is the content analysis
shown above. This meant I was
able to recognise the amount of
shots used within a trailer and
also how they promoted
different elements. I feel this
enabled me to choose my shot
types carefully within the scenes
and think about what sort of
message they would give to the
audience.
4. I continued write feedback on my content analysis so
that I could understand the effect of each shot and
what sort of shots were most frequently used and why
the reasons were for this. I also started research into
institution so I knew what sort of institution I would be
pitching my ideas too and what sort of format would
suit them. It enabled me to craft my trailer planning
around this. I also analysed individual sections of two
different trailer so that I could notice any extreme
differences between romantic trailers. Finally I
researched shot composition so I could understand
how too use the camera effectively during filming.
5. Planning
Whilst planning my production I created an
animatic which incorporated my story
board and music along with prompts to
give a visual idea of the length of the trailer
and what it would include. It helped me to
establish whether or not the length of shots
would be effective and long enough to
promote there message. I used a popplet
to brainstorm ideas for my production
concepts. Following this I created a survey
to see if I was working along the right lines
for my trailer. The feedback meant I could
further craft my ideas. I continued to create
a production pitch aimed at the institution I
had chosen during my institutions research.
It helps to clarify my ideas and understand
why they were conventional.
6. I continued to work on my production concepts
by writing a scene by scene document which
discussed exactly what would happen in each
scene. It did not however focus on any one
particular element. I used a visual document to
suggest how I would employ conventions to my
trailer.
7. After finalising my concepts I wrote a script
to focus on the use of dialogue and edited
my storyboard to visually show how I would
incorporate effective use of composition
which I had researched.
8. I carried out a risk assessment so
that we were able to overcome
any obstacles during filming, now
rather than later when it could
cause a problem. I also created a
production plan to keep on track
of filming so that we could meet
our deadlines. I consider the use of
mise-en-scene and presented the
names of the film we had
considered as a group.
9. I continued to choose the use of music,
casting and fonts along with a few rough
drafts. I used padlet to obtain audience
feedback so that I could understand
whether or not the concepts would
appeal to my audience.
10. Finally I discussed the use of conventions in ancillary
products which means I understand what is
expected in my production I also created more
detailed drafts. I summarised my audience
research so I could make any changes that were
needed before starting production.
