3. Research (existing products)
My research was here to aid me throughout my production of my film with something to
always go back to and have constantly going though my head while I work. This helped me
think about my audience and how they may react to my work. Following the inspirations I
got my film ideas from too the research helped laid down a foundation to build the film on.
With this down I could develop the ideas I had from the audience profiles and the content
that has been previously made, trying to put my own twist on it this meant my film had
more going for it too a reason to better others and to please an audience.
Another section of the planning was audience research where we had to make a
questionnaire for people to answer, this let me get incite into the people that maybe the
ones to see my film 1st. As well as having these questionnaires filled out is extra information
I can use for future films. Then asking individual audience members let me see a more
extended response from them. Meaning I could develop my film more because of these
responses I got.
These slides in the research power point where the
overview of the film as a whole just marketing wise as
well with the poster holding a lot of hidden information
about the film. Having these in my power point helped
just over view the film in a short section so when going
back I didn't have to read into it as much detail meaning
more time in production.
4. Research ( Audience)
My audience research consisted of making and finding the audience right for the film.
This was done by going to the You.Gov website to get a info graphic of the audience
my films I was researching was aiming towards. This showed me what type of people
look into the type of film I want to make. Having this knowledge in my head I used
survey monkey to get a mass looking into my films ideas and asked the masses what
they'd like to see in the film. This came back quite well with most of the responses
going quite well in the films ideas favor. This meant that it was a green light on making
the film knowing there's and audience waiting to see it.
The last part of my audience research was getting peer feedback on what they said on
the product with 1 to 1 criticism and aid to form the product form there and can go
more in-depth about what they want to see.
An info screen of what happened
when I typed “blade runner” in the
search bar of You.Gov ,this gave me
the information Quickly. That I
needed for my research on my
audience of neo-noir films.
5. Research (Analysis)
After all the research was done I looked into each section
seeing if it was a success or not. The overview I have now
was that the existing products and the interviews where
good because they where in my favor although looking at
the survey taken it seems the ones that where interested
in film where really into the idea that a film with a noir
feel is being made while others didn’t seem to care or
weren't too bothered. If I could do it again id try find a
bigger community of noir film lovers and ask them what
story polts characters and how the style should be laid
out for a more in depth responsible response.
6. Planning
The planning was probably the biggest part to help in production. If I wasn’t for this I would have had no order
to work in and would know what to shoot and where. So having good planning was a must have. Started with
writing the script for the whole film and then from there having a picture in my head of how id see it. This
would be a method of filming I would do again due to the simplicity of it and the effect it had on all my
planning, making it run really smoothly.
What went well with this is that I could list out every location we needed with adding these into the shot list as
I went on though. Having these done really made the film work because it meant it could be made to the time
frame I wanted. So production was extremely smooth, I I where to make a change id probably do the sketches
of how I wanted to see the scenes 1st and then do the shot list, I only say this because I felt like my sketches
where lack luster compared to all the other work to planning. This was because I had already planned out my
film and then from shooting and my shot list then I was able to have a full feeling of how the film may turn out.
As well as wen shooting I was changing the shots quite abit because looking at t back the original shots I tried
to do where not to the best quality so changing during production was a must.
I feel like this was one of the weaker
shots in the film as you’ve seen as
circled there's just empty space this
could have been filled with
something or the shot could have
been changed to see reactions from
the rest of the cast when the
character walked it.
7. Planning (style)
One of the biggest parts to the planning was getting the style correct for the
film. Making sure that everything Id researched and looked into some of the
aspects was there the 1st key one was the black and white style that was
inspired by sin city. This was because it felt like we needed a fresh take on the
genera and that’s what sin city did and I tried to re create.
The 2nd noticeable part was the character of Mitchel that’s was loosely based
off the main character in blade runner, Richard deckared. This is mainly by
the clothing and the attitude he gives off. I did this to give a classic feel in a
new film because looking at the audience that’s where most of them came
from and that time era of noir films being quite linier.
Other style came from john wick with the smooth long shots that seemed to
work well when it was scenes where the characters where progressing the
story though conversation. This just meant it looked better and smoother
having a modern feel to a classic looking noir film.
Using the smooth shooting camera I
took this shot that really went well
with the john wick style of shooting
but with the black and white noir feel
like sin city.
8. Time Management
How we spread out our time was working on a certain section week by week with some sections (production)
taking the longest due to it having the most work involved with it. Making all the content individually. Such as
the film, website and posters. Having these weeks to do the work was good because we weren't forced down
to one thing for too long amount of time it was spread out generously throughout the cores of a couple of
weeks. In the 1st week I set out a task to make the base for the posters implementing all the background and
how it'll lay out. This was done by putting picture of dogs in instead (as seen on bottom left). After the
following week we where able to film, I also grabbed some photos from the photoshoot we did on set and
came up with the poster from my previous idea. Therefor having a full poster with release date to go along
side.
My time frame was all put onto the proposal document we worked on giving us the weeks that we had to
improve on and what we had to do in the weeks to make sure the filming works out in our favour for the
amount I want to film. Having these stepping stones made sure wen production of it came around I knew what
I was doing and when the shot list and script helped with this massively because having it done before meant
on location we weren't wasting any time.

9. Technical Qualities
What my films biggest quality was the fact it was a noir flick that was all in black and white even
though it was a modern film. As well as trying to do a lot with a noir film that hasn’t been done
before. Essapassly comparing to other noir films like sin city with both of the styles similar /
different. With sin city being a neo-noir film based on a comic book while mine is a neo-noir with a
more realistic take on it and story telling attributes. The posters and the cinematography is
different too with sin city being filmed mainly on green screen while mine being location only is a
huge difference that really shows. Although looking back sin city's lighting is so much more
perfected something I think I should of tried to take from that film too. Although both films are neo-
noir they have very different styles to make it neo-noir. A lot of the shots are ether quite close up or
a mid shot in my film while sin city uses much more of a wide verity of shots that I wish I should of
done. Although in mine I do have some different shots such as split screen and 1st person.
10. Technical qualities
these are both the flagship
posters to both of these films
notice how all the main
protagonists on the left seem
to be much bigger while on
sin city on the right the main
protagonist is actually quite
small and silhouetted.
Although it still gets the main
cast across and makes u know
who people you'll be seeing in
the film. Also the layouts are
quite different with mine
being quite centered and
symmetrical while there's
being more tilted and on the
side like a comic book would
be.
11. Technical qualities
Talking about the website for the film I
made what I did was try to make an
experience for viewers could look into
and go into more depth about the film.
With character profiles and a store
where the viewer's that enjoyed the
film can go in depth more and ether
look into each characters backstory or
look for clothing they like with the
brand. Also these where linked in the
YouTube channels description so more
people can look into it than a usual
web browser.
I also had a donate option on the
footer of my page with all the thinks
and search tools so people can easily
find me and my work.
12. Aesthetic Qualities
What my film did was set out and try and have a
neo-noir genera that has a more modern twist to
it. Sharing similarity’s with classic noir flics
making it 1st in black and white to have a classic
style to the film and how the noir films used to
look. As well as having consumes that suit a noir
style film looking quite smart and fleek. With my
character suiting a trench coat and fedora. This is
shared throughout most nor films as at least one
of the main protagonists will have one of these
items with them or wearing one of them. This
gives the film that classic vibe to it that’s what I
wanted to show from my film a modern neo noir
with some classic twist to it. So in tradition to a
noir flick I had to keep somewhat of the same
style and that’s what I made my character
represent an old time by the book character.
While John (played by James) had more of a
fresh look so the audience would connect with
him more and welcome a new addition the the
genera.
13. Aesthetic Qualities
Another way I made my film fit the noir
genera more is the shots I did and took for
the film and the editing I did with it. An
example of this is the black and white filter
that really set the stage for the noir feel of
the fill then I made it so the main light
focus was in the center like older noir
films. This means my film suits and keeps
to the genera. As seen the shots hold
similarity although due to the time were in
the quality of my shot comes out so much
clearer. If I could make it again and stick to
just a “noir” film I would edit the sound
and the grain effect of the film to make it
look older this could make the film stick to
one genera I had envisioned (noir) but a
neo-noir is a good step up because it lets
me have my idea going though it more.
14. Audience Appeal
I feel like my film applied manly to my
target audience because of the age
range we had in. I think if it wasn’t for
this the film think may have not gone
down so well with the audience. This
helps me in some way for the future
because if I include people of my target
audience I think that may suit them
more. This is because I feel like if the
audience and relate to more people of
the same age range they may seem
more interested in the film made and
the characters in it. This information
could be valuable for future reference.
Also the theme wasn’t too suited too
suited to this type of audience although
due to the young cast some people
where able to enjoy the film as a whole
and for what it was.
What YouTube does is let me review
my work and see where my film was
viewed most and how long it was
viewed for. This showed me as well
where people tuned into the most
looking at the best part of the film.
15. Improvements
One of the improvements I made was changing the main poster to
more suit the idea that its all made by me. As the example shows. The
poster looks more torn and smoother due to it being all made by me
and not taking too many assets from other images. What I liked about
this poster compared to my previous is that color that the characters
have and how they're in some sort of spotlight what I wish I kept is the
previous torn paper effect because I honestly though it looked better.
In saying that the newer poster looks so much clearer compared to the
older one.
17. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the filters used in the film as it makes the film fit the plot
and style. I like the acting as its professional and flows well with
the film. The background music suits the scenes and brings the
whole film together. I also like the costumes as they fit the style
the actors are playing. I like how there are a lot of characters in
the film, it makes the film more involved.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– I would improve the audio as in some scenes its hard to hear
certain people. I would also use less cuts as it makes the scenes
more fluid.
18. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the different types of shot because it makes the film more
interesting and heightens the tension. I like the introduction because it
goes straight into the film with background music then into the title
sequence so the viewer already wants to know what has happened.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– Some of the sound effects are too loud where you can not hear what
the characters are saying because the sound goes from loud to very
quiet. I think there could have been more background music to make it
more tense.
19. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the comedy aspects within the film. There was a lot of different camera angles. I liked the editing when the
character was searching the house. It made the film look professional.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The music drowned out the speech a bit at the start. Some scenes were quite dark and it was quite hard to see. The
film could have had some colour at some point.
20. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– I feel like I should of made lots of better choices with my
audio and with my shots. I feel like I should have had
longer cuts like they said this may have made my film run a
lot smoother. Hopefully next time id be able to adjust it
and try new ways of cinematography.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I felt like the music was used well although I do wish I
toned it down a bit before hand so my characters voices
weren't overlapped so much.
