Production Process Evaluation
Research
In my opinion my research ween quite well. It allowed me to really expand my knowledge of my chosen area of media:
Video/Film. For my research, I firstly researched different excising products. I decided to choose many different kinds of film
which fit into the thriller genre however, some also fit into other categories like action and horror. I wanted a variety of
different products as this allowed me not only to expand my knowledge in the thriller genre but also expand my film
knowledge as a whole. Most of the products I used were quite modern films, however, I did chose an older product too. I
decided to research the trailer of Cape Fear 1991. This was because this specific film is not only very famous, is is also very
well directed and includes some outstanding performances. This meant that I could pick up different techniques that
Scorsese used and try and translate them into my trailer. For example, the tone change included in the Cape fear trailer. My
trailer also included a significant tone change. This is because I thought it was a very clever method to use and it also
creates an immense amount of intensity for the product. This helps build up the overall suspenseful tone of the product
therefore allowing the trailer to fulfil its thriller purpose. For my research I also researched a few excising products of
posters. This was because I had planned to make a poster for my film and I wanted to make it is as good and effective as
possible. I learnt about how the posters include very similar colours schemes to the film. This was to maintain a constant
theme for the product. The poster research also helped me see how real film posters were layout and which layouts worked
effectively. All of this existing product research was very beneficial to me and helped me significantly when creating my
final product.
However, if I could do excising product research again, I would have researched more products which had quiet similar story
to mine. This is because I wanted to see how I could have portrayed my stalker in a way which would have created even
more suspense. I do think that my stalker was portrayed well in trailer but, I feel if I had more research on stalker films, this
could have been even more beneficial to me. As well as that, I would have possibly researched a more varied range of film
posters. This is so I could have a more broad knowledge of film posters instead of just thriller posters. From this, I may have
picked up even more techniques which may have benefitted my final product.
Research
During my research, I also completed some audience research. For my audience researched I decided on secondary audience
research. This was because I thought it would be more beneficial than Primary audience research as I can find a wider range
of knowledge therefore I invested my time into this specific area. For my secondary audience research, I decided to look at
different age ranges at what films were post popular with each different age range. I wanted to d this as I wanted to see what
age range I would be attracting with my product. This would be beneficial to me as I could then plan an create my product in
a way that I know that age range would enjoy. As well as that, I also decided to look at different genders too see what films
and film genres they were interested in. I wanted to do this this as it would give me an overall idea of what gender I should
target my product to. For both genders and age ranges, I looked at many different tables and databases. This was because I
wanted to try to expand my knowledge and also secure what I was learning. This was because many different demographics
were telling me different information therefore I needed to research a few to get an overall judgment. For my audience
research I also looked at what genders preferred a directors style of film. The director I used was Alfred Hitchcock. This was
because he is one of the most famous and renowned thriller directors of all time therefore, his audience could be similar to
mine. This was quite good as it gave me a vey specific idea of a thriller audience. In fact, if I could have done this area of
research again, I would have used this specific technique more, I would have looked at what genders and age ranges like
different directors. This would have allowed me to collect a different type of information which could have benefited my final
product. As well as that, If I could have done this area of research again, I would have completed some primary audience
research. This is because although I think secondary is more useful, primary research would have allowed me to collect even
more research which would obviously benefit me. Also, with primary research, I could have chose what questions and
information I wanted to know therefore perhaps giving me some more detailed and specific information.
Research
For my research I also completed some subject research. For this, I researched extra things I wanted know and learn about
which were related to the topic of my product. Therefore, my subject research mainly consisted of stalker related
information. I researched how a real life stalker acted and also how being stalked had an effect on the victim. I decided to
research both his areas as I felt I would be able to incorporate a sense of reality into my product. I wanted to include this
element as I thought it may help build up the suspense in my trailer and make the overall product much more intense.
However, during production I did think bout what I had learnt in subject research when directing but, it didn't’t portray as
well as I had hoped in the final product. Therefore, If I could do this this project again, I would try and make the stalker act
very similar to real stalker by making him seem a little less sane and more crazy. I think this would have highly benefited
more trailer and created an even more tense and thrilling atmosphere.
During subject research, I also researched how to create good suspenseful music. In the end, this was beneficial to me as I
did include some aspects of the things I learnt. For example, how a change in music/rise of tempo can start to build the
suspense up. If I could do my trailer again, I ay have perhaps followed the guidelines of this video more as it mentioned that
I could up the volume in the scene to make the suspense build up. Although my product does build suspense well with the
intensity of the music, increasing the volume of the music would have created even more suspense meaning this may have
slightly improved the product.
Research
I think my practical research went quite well however, it could have gone better. It went well because I tested out many
different things which I did want to find out. For example, How different lightings effected the shot and also kind of shots
were better than others to complete different purposes. I decided on ideas like this as I thought it would be beneficial to my
final product and also save me time as I could test them out now meaning I wouldn't have to think about that specific area
again. I also tested out ideas involving music and different colour corrections in premier pro. For music, I tested out how
different volumes effected the tone. I did this too see what volume and would sound I should try and create for my final
product for the purpose of building suspense. And for colour correction, I messed around with different filters and colour
correction to find one which conveyed the tone I wanted to portray in my trailer. The colour correction practical research
was probably the most effective section of my research. This was because it gave me an exact idea of what I wanted in my
final product meaning I didn't’t even have to think about what filter or how to colour correct a shot. This saved me time in
production meaning I could concentrate on other more important things.
After completing this section of my research and my product as a whole, I have realized some of this benefited me however,
some of it really was not that useful. For example, the music element of my practical research was not that useful. This is
because I never really used what I tested in my final product therefore it was almost a waste of time. I could have used the
time more efficiently to test out different instruments and tracks on garage band and YouTube to find the right music for my
product. This would have saved me a lot of time during production which I could have invested into trying to improve either
my trailer or my poster.
Planning
Overall I think my planning went quite well. For my planning I firstly completed an initial plans document. For this I drafted
different mood boards mood boards of all my initial ideas for my product. I found this very useful as it allowed me to see my
ideas visually and also collect a better understanding of what I wanted to make. It also allowed me think and collect
inspiration from already existing ideas. In the long run, this would overall help me create my product as this ort of build the
foundation of my product. For my mood board I decided to include many different types of images which all inspired my
differently. This varied from different locations, to different characters, to different colour correction on a certain shot. I feel
my mood board went well however, if I was to improve it I would have collected even more images and perhaps with even
more variety. This would have allowed me to have an even broader spectrum of ideas which may have helped me think of
new concepts and ideas for my final product. On my initial plans document I also included my key influences. This was again
different images which inspired my the most in the beginning stages. Here, I decided to include mainly directors and
characters. This was because it was predominately different directors and characters which inspired me to create a thriller
stalker trailer. If I could do this area of planning again, I would have included some poster in my key influences as I never
mentioned what film posters inspired me. I feel this may have benefited me in my final product as seeing some of my
influences visually may have inspired me more therefore allowing me to create an even better film poster.
Planning
For my research, I also used a pre production document to plan my product. Firstly, this involved making a shot list,
storyboard and a script. These were all beneficial during production as it gave me an idea of what I needed to film and how
to direct my actors . However during production I realized that I was going to have to change what I had initially planned.
This was because I had not planned enough shot as I wanted. This then meant that my storyboard was not long enough and
my script would not be accurate. This meant I had to improvise a little bit with a few shots. In the end, it worked out well
though. This was because although my shot list, storyboard and script wasn’t perfect they all gave me a good basic plan to
follow meaning I didn't lose track of where I was or what I had to do. Therefore, if I could do this project again, I would have
made a longer storyboard and shot list to make sure it fit a good trailer length. This would have saved me some time and
allowed me to concentrate on other areas of production. In the end, I re-wrote my script and created a post production
slide on my shot list and story board.
During planning I also created a location brief. To complete this task, I created a mood board of all the possible locations I
wanted to film in. I decided on locations like a car, a ginnel, a kitchen, a bedroom and a quiet street. This was a strong
aspect of my planning as it allowed me to decided on what locations I wanted to film in. This was very beneficial to me
during the production process as it meant I didn't’t need to decide on where I was going to film as I already knew. It also
helped me as I chose to collect images of the exact location or similar ones meaning that I could already picture how I
wanted certain shots to turn out like. I also analyzed each one of my locations. This was a strength of my planning as it
helped me secure my idea and make sure that my chosen location was perfect for its purpose and for the product overall.
Planning
For my planning, I decided to create different style sheets. I decided to make a few for my trailer and some for my poster. To
do this, I used the website Paletton. This was because this website gives a visual image of colours which would work
alongside your chosen colour. This means that the website helps to chose a colour scheme which will definitely work. For
my trailer, I mainly planned to use dark and depressing colours like grey and blue. My style sheet was a strength of my
planning as it meant when filming and editing my trailer, I didn't have to think about how I wanted it to look as I already
knew the exact them I wanted to be portrayed. Because of my style sheet, during filming I mainly shot my shots in dark
lighting for example, when the clouds were out and there was no sun. It also meant that when in editing I knew that I
wanted my trailer to look quite blue and depressed therefore, I decreased the brightness and added a sort of blue tint to
the product. I also analyzed each colour pallet that I made. This was good as it made me secure my ideas and know that
they were going to work in my product. For my poster, I made a style sheet which was quite similar to my trailers style
sheet. This was because I wanted the product to maintain a constant theme.
As well s that, for my poster I created a font slide and a flat plan. I needed to create a font slide as I needed to express my
ideas visually. This slide was beneficial as it allowed me create different and find different fonts and then analyze them to
chose which one I wanted to us. This slide was good however, to improve it I would have collected a bigger variety of fonts.
Tis would have given me more choice meaning I may have been able to find a better text for my poster. I would have also
chosen on an exact text to use for each different section of my poster. This is because this would have saved me time in
production s I would have already knew the exact font I wanted to use instead of just a few ideas to choose from. I decided
to create a flat plan for my poster. This was another strength of my planning as it allowed me to not even really think about
the layout of my poster during production as I already had an exact plan. This saved me much needed time in production.
Time Management
Throughout my FMP, I think I did manage my time well. This is because I managed to all my work in on time for
their set deadlines. I also managed to complete my reflective diaries after every week meaning I could reflect on
my work and try to improve on it in the future. As well as that, I also managed to collect my footage quiet quickly. I
managed to collect all my original planned footage within the first week and then my added footage in the second.
This meant that I could make some significant progress when in lesson instead of not really doing much. With
some pieces of work however, after handing them in and putting them on my blog, I did go back and try to
improve them. This was because I felt that even though they were of a good quality I could improve theme even
more. Because of this, I feel that my products could have definitely been improved with additional time. This
would have allowed me to add even more detail than I already had and look at even more existing products. This
may have benefited me as it may have given me more inspiration or allowed me to pick up even more techniques
from different directors and actors. Overall, I think this would have helped my product as I could have learnt new
techniques and translated them into my product perhaps giving me a higher mark.
If I had more time to go and improve my work, I would have added more detail in my pre production. This would
have involved brainstorming a bigger variety of fonts for my poster and re creating my shot list and storyboard. A
bigger variety of fonts would have benefited me as I would have had a broader spectrum to choose from perhaps
meaning that I could have found a font that works more effectively. I would have also researched even more
excising products both trailers and posters. This is because I could have possibly picked up even more techniques
from different directors, editors and designers which may have effected my final product.
Technical Qualities
My trailer contained a very noticeable tone change. This was achieved by opening the product with very peaceful and calm
music to relax the audience but then when a specific shot is displayed cutting the music to silence. After that, changing the
music to something a little more intense and then allowing that to build up until it hits climax near the end of the trailer.
This was done to create an immense amount of suspense and almost shock the audience. Their shock would leave them on
the edge of their seat and gripped to the product. This technique is similar to what Is used in the trailer for the film Cape
Fear 1991. In the cape fear trailer, the trailer opens with very peaceful music and all the dialogue included is very positive.
When De Niro's character is then mention, the trailers tone changes. The music then becomes much more intense, this
technique helps the trailer create a significant amount to suspense. Linking to this, as my product continues, the shot speed
gradually increases. This is to ft with the music but predominately to build tension and suspense. Cape fear also shares this
quality as its shot speed also starts to increase right after the tone change occurs. My product includes a very noticeable
filter and colour correction which I achieved when editing in premier pro. I decided to include this as it helps to portray the
tone of the product. It does this as my product is predominately blue and quite dark. This conveys a very dark and
depressed atmosphere for the trailer. This is different from Cape Fear as the trailer might include a sight colour change
however, it isn't very noticeable. The editor would have done this either because he felt the tone of the product was already
conveyed well enough or they may have been trying to portray a slightly different tone to mine. I decided to end my product
on a very quite and suspenseful scene. This scene involved Lilly(my main character) to hear a knock at the door, as she
opens it, her stalker is stood behind it. I feel this scene is very effective. This is similar to how the Cape Fear trailer ends as
the final scene in the trailer is the stalker asking to put his arm round his lawyers 16 year old daughter, the music in this
scene also drops to silence. I think both scenes work significantly well.
Technical Qualities
In my opinion one of the best qualities of my product was its dark and depressing colour tone. This was good as it helped
the product convey its dark theme to the audience therefore allowing them to feel more involved in the product. This
technique is also used in the trailer for the film Prisoners. The story of the film prisoners is very intense and includes a
variety of very dark events. This is portrayed by the colour tone of the film as every shot is very dark and there is a very
frequent use of the colour blue which is well known for its relation to sadness and misery. A clever technique that I used in
my trailer was that I wanted the suspense to build up as this trailer went on. This was achieved by opening my product with
very positive music, this created a very clam and relaxed atmosphere. Then, when needed I changed the music to become
much more intense. The new music then built up over time until it reached its climax at the end of the product. The trailer
for Prisoners uses a very similar technique. However, Prisoners’ trailer opens with no music. The only noises included are
some subtle sound effects and some very clear dialogue. The idea of no background music creates an already tense
atmosphere for the audience leaving them gripped to the product. The Prisoners trailer relates to mien as it includes a very
clear tone change. This occurs when the two little girls go missing. Some music is then added build gradually builds up over
time This technique is very clever as it manages to build an immense amount of suspense and creates a very intense
atmosphere. The trailers music then reaches its climax however, the trailer does not finish at this point. The end of the
product includes a few shots of some very intense scenes however, there is no music in the background. This is similar to my
trailer as I also end my product with an almost silent scene. The only noise is a knock at the door, footsteps and a small
piece of dialogue. In my opinion. This creates even more suspense then at the climax. This is because it is almost silent
meaning the tension of the shots is very prominent meaning the audience would be gripped to the product.
Technical Qualities
My poster contains a very dark theme. This was because I wanted my poster to reflect my trailer. Although my trailer isn't all
black, the dark and depressed theme of the poster symbolizes the theme in my trailer. This is similar to the Cape Fear 1991
film poster. This is because the poster is very dark to resemble the films dark nature. However, differently to my product,
the poster does contain some blue. This is perhaps to resemble a positive aspect of the film or to create a sense of hope for
the audience. Both posters also include quite large images of the man characters. The difference however, is that my poster
is very centered around Lilly. This is because she is the main focus of the trailer meaning I want her to resemble the product.
As well, as that, she is a very innocent character meaning the audience may pity her and then buy the product. Whereas, on
the Cape Fear poster all the important characters are shown. This may have been done to show the importance of every
character or because of the layout of the poster, to show how De Niro’s character is always watching them. This is a very
clever technique to use. For my poster, I decided to use a font that I thought almost looked handwritten. This was because I
wanted to try and portray the innocence of Lilly on my font and I believed that this was the best way to do it. The Cape Fear
poster is quite different. It uses a very sharp and bold font. The creator of the poster may have done this to show the
dangerous nature of the film or just maybe to try and make it stand out off the page.
Similarly, the main focus on both posters is also the main characters. On mine it is Lilly and on the Cape fear poster it is De
Niro’s character. This is to show the importance of each character. However, I feel the Cape Fear poster is slightly better than
mine on this point. This is because De Niros character is portraying much more emotion than Lilly on mine. On my poster
Lilly does convey the serous nature of my product but, it just isn't achieved as well as on the Cape Fear poster. This is
effective as it conveys the nature of each character and portrays the nature of the film. This is a very effective technique to
include.
Aesthetic Qualities
After finishing my trailer, I think my work does look very aesthetically pleasing. I decided to go with quite a dark colour tone.
This included a very blue tone and quite dark shots. This was achieved on premier pro by lowing the exposure of each shot,
I also added the SL IRON NDR look to give the product a more blue colouring. I decided to go with quite a dark and
depressed tone as I wanted the aesthetic of my trailer to convey the tone and story of my trailer. In the end, I think it
fulfilled its purpose significantly well. Some of the shots included in the trailer were also quite nice. My favourite one was
when Lilly goes to pick up her phone in the room. The shot is only focused on the phone and the background where Lilly
stands is blurred, I just think it works very effectively as it directs the audience clearly. In my opinion, I think the aesthetic of
my product was creative. This was because I changed and altered many different components to allow me to the exact look
that I wanted. I also went through many different looks on premier pro to try to find the right one which met my standards.
My shots also included creative elements like again the phone shot and also the POV shot in the back of the Uber at the
start of the the trailer. As well as that, I really like the shot of the stalker when he enters the park. I think it works well
because it is an over he shoulder shot meaning they its almost from his pint of view. This evokes some emotion for the
audience as you feel as if your are the stalker therefore responsible for his actions. The gate opening sound in the
background also works very well alongside it. However, I think my most creative shot was the one where the stalker
disappears behind the car. I personally think this shot looked good and also worked very effectively in the product. This
specific shot managed to build some good tension for the audience as the stalker just seems to disappear leaving the
audience curious and confused.
Aesthetic Qualities
If I could do this project again, I would of made sure every shot was perfect. By this I mean making sure that there is no
shake in the shot. This is because in a few of the shots included in my product, there is a slight shake. I feel if I made this
correction, my product would look even more clean and professional. As well as that, some of the lighting in my shots could
have been improved. This would have made them look slightly more clear therefore again again a higher sense of
professionalism to the product. As well as that, the text included in the product did work well however, I feel if I had slightly
more time I could have collected a wider range of text in during pre production meaning I may have been able to find a
slightly better text that may have worked more effectively.
I really like my products colour tone as it fits really well with the theme of the trailer. Because of this, I want it be perfect on
every shot and I feel on one specific shot the colour tone could have been slightly improved. This is because all of my
product includes a very blue tone and one shot has slightly too much orange and yellow in it. I did notice this during
production and I did edit that specific shot. However, I feel it still could have done with a slightly more blue tone. This is so
the same depressed theme is maintained throughout.
Aesthetic Qualities
In my opinion, I think my poster does look good. This is because I really like the simple but effective aesthetic of it. The black
background and the light grey font really correspond well together. I decide to go with a dark coloured theme as I wanted
my poster to reflect the theme of my trailer. I also think the large image of Lilly was photographed well and looks good
against the black background. Similarly to the background, it also corresponds well with the light grey text. The billing block
at the bottom of the page also came out very good. I wanted to include a billing block as I wanted my poster to look as real
as possible. The emotion on Lilly's face also portrays the seriousness and mature nature of the trailer. This is a good feature
to include as the poster fulfils its purpose by advertising the trailer correctly. . On the poster, I also added the gradient tool.
This was used to add a sort of fade effect form Lilly to the Title font. It was also used to try and darken Lilly to fit with the
dark background. The font included on the poster works well. I decided on that specific font as it almost looks handwritten.
This is good as I wanted Lilly's immaturity and innocence to be portrayed on the poster in some way and if felt this was the
best way to do it.
However, although I do like the font I feel it could have perhaps been improved. This is because I could have chosen
something slightly more intense to show the intense nature of the film. As well as that, a different font may have appealed
to my target audience more as the immaturity of this may not appeal to them in the same way something more intense and
mature would. As well as that, although the quality of the photo is good, I feel it is a little to bright for the poster. To
improve, I could have shot it in darker lighting or edited the photo individually to make the exposure on it slightly lower. I
feel this would have made it fit in with the theme of the rest of the poster more effectively.
Audience Appeal
My target audience was both genders in the age range 55+. I found this out whilst researching my audience
during the research process. To target this specific audience, I made sure that my product conveyed quite a
mature theme. I did this during filming and during my editing process. I decide to film in quite dull and dark
lighting. This was to convey the tone of the product but also to try to target my target audience. During
editing, I added a filter and did some colour correction on all of my shots. This made the product have a
more depressing and mature look to it therefore targeting a more mature audience. This would not interest
the younger generation as it does not include the vibrancy which they desire in a film/trailer. The story of
my product also appeals to my audience. This is because I feel it would not interest the younger generation
as it may bore them or perhaps be too complex for them. The trailer would interest the older generation as
it includes quite suspenseful shots meaning they would be gripped. One of the main reasons why my
product would appeal to my audience is the genre. This is because the thriller genre is very popular with a
more mature audience. This is evidenced n my secondary audience research.
Although my product does attract all genders, I feel it may attract females more. This I because although it
includes intense shots, it does not include the action and danger that a male audience may require.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I think the video is really impressive, I especially like the audio, the background sound effects like the
birds singing at the beginning and the sound of the mum cleaning the chopping board are
heightened and emphasise the normality of the day and make the video more professional and
realistic.
– The camera positioning is good, the shots are always in focus and there are a wide range of shots
included which make the advert more interesting for the audience.
– I like the special effects added to the poster
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The colour grading through the video to create a dark and grunge aesthetic is effective and suits the
horror movie style that the advert is supporting, however I think the advert could of done with more
colours and different lighting for variety.
– I liked the parts of the video with text which built up the tension of the advert but I thought the font
could have been more sinister and would’ve made the video look a bit more professional
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I thought the speeding up the shots nearer to the end was a good technique to use
– At the start the shots fade out into black before the next shot takes place, this with the violin
also playing make for a good emotional scene.
– When the character goes into her room and the close up of the iPhone is the only thing that’s
in focus is a good use of where you want your audiences attention to be and also generates a
feeling of paranoia because its most likely going to be the stalker .
– The words that appear on the screen are cut well and look good within the scene.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The shots are done really well but they maybe could improve with a stabiliser and
a few more colour grading edits to make it seem more authentic.
• At the end when the stalker is at the door and says hi lilly, I think he could of
seemed a bit more genuine but when you don’t have actors that’s fair enough.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the screen colour because it’s look so creepy and nervous.
– The actors look amazing facial expressions and body languages! I really
impressed.
– The camera movement are excellent. I like that way very smooth to
move the camera.
– The fonts are really cool. Nice to match horror/thriller film.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• You might need bit more focus because I can see some scenes had bit
blurry.
• Some scenes might need bit more brighter.
Peer Feedback Summary
After reading my peer feedback, I do agree with it both positives and negatives. Firstly, I agree with the
idea of how the background sound effects worked really well. This was because they made the product
seem more realistic therefore adding a sense of professionalism to the trailer. I also agree with the
comments about how speeding up the shots as they trailer went on was a good technique to use. This is
because it helps build suspense and tension throughout the trailer. The point about how I open my product
I also agree with as this does create a very emotional scene and atmosphere for the product. I do also
agree with some of my criticism. For example, the point about lighting. Some of my shots could have done
with slightly better lighting. This would have made the product as a whole look even more professional. I
also agree with the idea of how my text could have been improved. I thought it worked well on my poster
but perhaps not as well in my trailer
However, I did also disagree with some of the points made. For example, the point about my shots being
out of focus. This may have been due to when I exported the file as when shot and whilst in editng, none
of my shots were out of focus. As well as that, I disagree with the point of how I should have varied the
colour tone of the trailer. I disagree with this because I wanted the product to maintain a dark and
depressing tone therefore I wanting the same colour tone throughout my trailer.

Evaluation fmp

  • 3. Research In my opinion my research ween quite well. It allowed me to really expand my knowledge of my chosen area of media: Video/Film. For my research, I firstly researched different excising products. I decided to choose many different kinds of film which fit into the thriller genre however, some also fit into other categories like action and horror. I wanted a variety of different products as this allowed me not only to expand my knowledge in the thriller genre but also expand my film knowledge as a whole. Most of the products I used were quite modern films, however, I did chose an older product too. I decided to research the trailer of Cape Fear 1991. This was because this specific film is not only very famous, is is also very well directed and includes some outstanding performances. This meant that I could pick up different techniques that Scorsese used and try and translate them into my trailer. For example, the tone change included in the Cape fear trailer. My trailer also included a significant tone change. This is because I thought it was a very clever method to use and it also creates an immense amount of intensity for the product. This helps build up the overall suspenseful tone of the product therefore allowing the trailer to fulfil its thriller purpose. For my research I also researched a few excising products of posters. This was because I had planned to make a poster for my film and I wanted to make it is as good and effective as possible. I learnt about how the posters include very similar colours schemes to the film. This was to maintain a constant theme for the product. The poster research also helped me see how real film posters were layout and which layouts worked effectively. All of this existing product research was very beneficial to me and helped me significantly when creating my final product. However, if I could do excising product research again, I would have researched more products which had quiet similar story to mine. This is because I wanted to see how I could have portrayed my stalker in a way which would have created even more suspense. I do think that my stalker was portrayed well in trailer but, I feel if I had more research on stalker films, this could have been even more beneficial to me. As well as that, I would have possibly researched a more varied range of film posters. This is so I could have a more broad knowledge of film posters instead of just thriller posters. From this, I may have picked up even more techniques which may have benefitted my final product.
  • 4. Research During my research, I also completed some audience research. For my audience researched I decided on secondary audience research. This was because I thought it would be more beneficial than Primary audience research as I can find a wider range of knowledge therefore I invested my time into this specific area. For my secondary audience research, I decided to look at different age ranges at what films were post popular with each different age range. I wanted to d this as I wanted to see what age range I would be attracting with my product. This would be beneficial to me as I could then plan an create my product in a way that I know that age range would enjoy. As well as that, I also decided to look at different genders too see what films and film genres they were interested in. I wanted to do this this as it would give me an overall idea of what gender I should target my product to. For both genders and age ranges, I looked at many different tables and databases. This was because I wanted to try to expand my knowledge and also secure what I was learning. This was because many different demographics were telling me different information therefore I needed to research a few to get an overall judgment. For my audience research I also looked at what genders preferred a directors style of film. The director I used was Alfred Hitchcock. This was because he is one of the most famous and renowned thriller directors of all time therefore, his audience could be similar to mine. This was quite good as it gave me a vey specific idea of a thriller audience. In fact, if I could have done this area of research again, I would have used this specific technique more, I would have looked at what genders and age ranges like different directors. This would have allowed me to collect a different type of information which could have benefited my final product. As well as that, If I could have done this area of research again, I would have completed some primary audience research. This is because although I think secondary is more useful, primary research would have allowed me to collect even more research which would obviously benefit me. Also, with primary research, I could have chose what questions and information I wanted to know therefore perhaps giving me some more detailed and specific information.
  • 5. Research For my research I also completed some subject research. For this, I researched extra things I wanted know and learn about which were related to the topic of my product. Therefore, my subject research mainly consisted of stalker related information. I researched how a real life stalker acted and also how being stalked had an effect on the victim. I decided to research both his areas as I felt I would be able to incorporate a sense of reality into my product. I wanted to include this element as I thought it may help build up the suspense in my trailer and make the overall product much more intense. However, during production I did think bout what I had learnt in subject research when directing but, it didn't’t portray as well as I had hoped in the final product. Therefore, If I could do this this project again, I would try and make the stalker act very similar to real stalker by making him seem a little less sane and more crazy. I think this would have highly benefited more trailer and created an even more tense and thrilling atmosphere. During subject research, I also researched how to create good suspenseful music. In the end, this was beneficial to me as I did include some aspects of the things I learnt. For example, how a change in music/rise of tempo can start to build the suspense up. If I could do my trailer again, I ay have perhaps followed the guidelines of this video more as it mentioned that I could up the volume in the scene to make the suspense build up. Although my product does build suspense well with the intensity of the music, increasing the volume of the music would have created even more suspense meaning this may have slightly improved the product.
  • 6. Research I think my practical research went quite well however, it could have gone better. It went well because I tested out many different things which I did want to find out. For example, How different lightings effected the shot and also kind of shots were better than others to complete different purposes. I decided on ideas like this as I thought it would be beneficial to my final product and also save me time as I could test them out now meaning I wouldn't have to think about that specific area again. I also tested out ideas involving music and different colour corrections in premier pro. For music, I tested out how different volumes effected the tone. I did this too see what volume and would sound I should try and create for my final product for the purpose of building suspense. And for colour correction, I messed around with different filters and colour correction to find one which conveyed the tone I wanted to portray in my trailer. The colour correction practical research was probably the most effective section of my research. This was because it gave me an exact idea of what I wanted in my final product meaning I didn't’t even have to think about what filter or how to colour correct a shot. This saved me time in production meaning I could concentrate on other more important things. After completing this section of my research and my product as a whole, I have realized some of this benefited me however, some of it really was not that useful. For example, the music element of my practical research was not that useful. This is because I never really used what I tested in my final product therefore it was almost a waste of time. I could have used the time more efficiently to test out different instruments and tracks on garage band and YouTube to find the right music for my product. This would have saved me a lot of time during production which I could have invested into trying to improve either my trailer or my poster.
  • 7. Planning Overall I think my planning went quite well. For my planning I firstly completed an initial plans document. For this I drafted different mood boards mood boards of all my initial ideas for my product. I found this very useful as it allowed me to see my ideas visually and also collect a better understanding of what I wanted to make. It also allowed me think and collect inspiration from already existing ideas. In the long run, this would overall help me create my product as this ort of build the foundation of my product. For my mood board I decided to include many different types of images which all inspired my differently. This varied from different locations, to different characters, to different colour correction on a certain shot. I feel my mood board went well however, if I was to improve it I would have collected even more images and perhaps with even more variety. This would have allowed me to have an even broader spectrum of ideas which may have helped me think of new concepts and ideas for my final product. On my initial plans document I also included my key influences. This was again different images which inspired my the most in the beginning stages. Here, I decided to include mainly directors and characters. This was because it was predominately different directors and characters which inspired me to create a thriller stalker trailer. If I could do this area of planning again, I would have included some poster in my key influences as I never mentioned what film posters inspired me. I feel this may have benefited me in my final product as seeing some of my influences visually may have inspired me more therefore allowing me to create an even better film poster.
  • 8. Planning For my research, I also used a pre production document to plan my product. Firstly, this involved making a shot list, storyboard and a script. These were all beneficial during production as it gave me an idea of what I needed to film and how to direct my actors . However during production I realized that I was going to have to change what I had initially planned. This was because I had not planned enough shot as I wanted. This then meant that my storyboard was not long enough and my script would not be accurate. This meant I had to improvise a little bit with a few shots. In the end, it worked out well though. This was because although my shot list, storyboard and script wasn’t perfect they all gave me a good basic plan to follow meaning I didn't lose track of where I was or what I had to do. Therefore, if I could do this project again, I would have made a longer storyboard and shot list to make sure it fit a good trailer length. This would have saved me some time and allowed me to concentrate on other areas of production. In the end, I re-wrote my script and created a post production slide on my shot list and story board. During planning I also created a location brief. To complete this task, I created a mood board of all the possible locations I wanted to film in. I decided on locations like a car, a ginnel, a kitchen, a bedroom and a quiet street. This was a strong aspect of my planning as it allowed me to decided on what locations I wanted to film in. This was very beneficial to me during the production process as it meant I didn't’t need to decide on where I was going to film as I already knew. It also helped me as I chose to collect images of the exact location or similar ones meaning that I could already picture how I wanted certain shots to turn out like. I also analyzed each one of my locations. This was a strength of my planning as it helped me secure my idea and make sure that my chosen location was perfect for its purpose and for the product overall.
  • 9. Planning For my planning, I decided to create different style sheets. I decided to make a few for my trailer and some for my poster. To do this, I used the website Paletton. This was because this website gives a visual image of colours which would work alongside your chosen colour. This means that the website helps to chose a colour scheme which will definitely work. For my trailer, I mainly planned to use dark and depressing colours like grey and blue. My style sheet was a strength of my planning as it meant when filming and editing my trailer, I didn't have to think about how I wanted it to look as I already knew the exact them I wanted to be portrayed. Because of my style sheet, during filming I mainly shot my shots in dark lighting for example, when the clouds were out and there was no sun. It also meant that when in editing I knew that I wanted my trailer to look quite blue and depressed therefore, I decreased the brightness and added a sort of blue tint to the product. I also analyzed each colour pallet that I made. This was good as it made me secure my ideas and know that they were going to work in my product. For my poster, I made a style sheet which was quite similar to my trailers style sheet. This was because I wanted the product to maintain a constant theme. As well s that, for my poster I created a font slide and a flat plan. I needed to create a font slide as I needed to express my ideas visually. This slide was beneficial as it allowed me create different and find different fonts and then analyze them to chose which one I wanted to us. This slide was good however, to improve it I would have collected a bigger variety of fonts. Tis would have given me more choice meaning I may have been able to find a better text for my poster. I would have also chosen on an exact text to use for each different section of my poster. This is because this would have saved me time in production s I would have already knew the exact font I wanted to use instead of just a few ideas to choose from. I decided to create a flat plan for my poster. This was another strength of my planning as it allowed me to not even really think about the layout of my poster during production as I already had an exact plan. This saved me much needed time in production.
  • 10. Time Management Throughout my FMP, I think I did manage my time well. This is because I managed to all my work in on time for their set deadlines. I also managed to complete my reflective diaries after every week meaning I could reflect on my work and try to improve on it in the future. As well as that, I also managed to collect my footage quiet quickly. I managed to collect all my original planned footage within the first week and then my added footage in the second. This meant that I could make some significant progress when in lesson instead of not really doing much. With some pieces of work however, after handing them in and putting them on my blog, I did go back and try to improve them. This was because I felt that even though they were of a good quality I could improve theme even more. Because of this, I feel that my products could have definitely been improved with additional time. This would have allowed me to add even more detail than I already had and look at even more existing products. This may have benefited me as it may have given me more inspiration or allowed me to pick up even more techniques from different directors and actors. Overall, I think this would have helped my product as I could have learnt new techniques and translated them into my product perhaps giving me a higher mark. If I had more time to go and improve my work, I would have added more detail in my pre production. This would have involved brainstorming a bigger variety of fonts for my poster and re creating my shot list and storyboard. A bigger variety of fonts would have benefited me as I would have had a broader spectrum to choose from perhaps meaning that I could have found a font that works more effectively. I would have also researched even more excising products both trailers and posters. This is because I could have possibly picked up even more techniques from different directors, editors and designers which may have effected my final product.
  • 11. Technical Qualities My trailer contained a very noticeable tone change. This was achieved by opening the product with very peaceful and calm music to relax the audience but then when a specific shot is displayed cutting the music to silence. After that, changing the music to something a little more intense and then allowing that to build up until it hits climax near the end of the trailer. This was done to create an immense amount of suspense and almost shock the audience. Their shock would leave them on the edge of their seat and gripped to the product. This technique is similar to what Is used in the trailer for the film Cape Fear 1991. In the cape fear trailer, the trailer opens with very peaceful music and all the dialogue included is very positive. When De Niro's character is then mention, the trailers tone changes. The music then becomes much more intense, this technique helps the trailer create a significant amount to suspense. Linking to this, as my product continues, the shot speed gradually increases. This is to ft with the music but predominately to build tension and suspense. Cape fear also shares this quality as its shot speed also starts to increase right after the tone change occurs. My product includes a very noticeable filter and colour correction which I achieved when editing in premier pro. I decided to include this as it helps to portray the tone of the product. It does this as my product is predominately blue and quite dark. This conveys a very dark and depressed atmosphere for the trailer. This is different from Cape Fear as the trailer might include a sight colour change however, it isn't very noticeable. The editor would have done this either because he felt the tone of the product was already conveyed well enough or they may have been trying to portray a slightly different tone to mine. I decided to end my product on a very quite and suspenseful scene. This scene involved Lilly(my main character) to hear a knock at the door, as she opens it, her stalker is stood behind it. I feel this scene is very effective. This is similar to how the Cape Fear trailer ends as the final scene in the trailer is the stalker asking to put his arm round his lawyers 16 year old daughter, the music in this scene also drops to silence. I think both scenes work significantly well.
  • 12. Technical Qualities In my opinion one of the best qualities of my product was its dark and depressing colour tone. This was good as it helped the product convey its dark theme to the audience therefore allowing them to feel more involved in the product. This technique is also used in the trailer for the film Prisoners. The story of the film prisoners is very intense and includes a variety of very dark events. This is portrayed by the colour tone of the film as every shot is very dark and there is a very frequent use of the colour blue which is well known for its relation to sadness and misery. A clever technique that I used in my trailer was that I wanted the suspense to build up as this trailer went on. This was achieved by opening my product with very positive music, this created a very clam and relaxed atmosphere. Then, when needed I changed the music to become much more intense. The new music then built up over time until it reached its climax at the end of the product. The trailer for Prisoners uses a very similar technique. However, Prisoners’ trailer opens with no music. The only noises included are some subtle sound effects and some very clear dialogue. The idea of no background music creates an already tense atmosphere for the audience leaving them gripped to the product. The Prisoners trailer relates to mien as it includes a very clear tone change. This occurs when the two little girls go missing. Some music is then added build gradually builds up over time This technique is very clever as it manages to build an immense amount of suspense and creates a very intense atmosphere. The trailers music then reaches its climax however, the trailer does not finish at this point. The end of the product includes a few shots of some very intense scenes however, there is no music in the background. This is similar to my trailer as I also end my product with an almost silent scene. The only noise is a knock at the door, footsteps and a small piece of dialogue. In my opinion. This creates even more suspense then at the climax. This is because it is almost silent meaning the tension of the shots is very prominent meaning the audience would be gripped to the product.
  • 13. Technical Qualities My poster contains a very dark theme. This was because I wanted my poster to reflect my trailer. Although my trailer isn't all black, the dark and depressed theme of the poster symbolizes the theme in my trailer. This is similar to the Cape Fear 1991 film poster. This is because the poster is very dark to resemble the films dark nature. However, differently to my product, the poster does contain some blue. This is perhaps to resemble a positive aspect of the film or to create a sense of hope for the audience. Both posters also include quite large images of the man characters. The difference however, is that my poster is very centered around Lilly. This is because she is the main focus of the trailer meaning I want her to resemble the product. As well, as that, she is a very innocent character meaning the audience may pity her and then buy the product. Whereas, on the Cape Fear poster all the important characters are shown. This may have been done to show the importance of every character or because of the layout of the poster, to show how De Niro’s character is always watching them. This is a very clever technique to use. For my poster, I decided to use a font that I thought almost looked handwritten. This was because I wanted to try and portray the innocence of Lilly on my font and I believed that this was the best way to do it. The Cape Fear poster is quite different. It uses a very sharp and bold font. The creator of the poster may have done this to show the dangerous nature of the film or just maybe to try and make it stand out off the page. Similarly, the main focus on both posters is also the main characters. On mine it is Lilly and on the Cape fear poster it is De Niro’s character. This is to show the importance of each character. However, I feel the Cape Fear poster is slightly better than mine on this point. This is because De Niros character is portraying much more emotion than Lilly on mine. On my poster Lilly does convey the serous nature of my product but, it just isn't achieved as well as on the Cape Fear poster. This is effective as it conveys the nature of each character and portrays the nature of the film. This is a very effective technique to include.
  • 14. Aesthetic Qualities After finishing my trailer, I think my work does look very aesthetically pleasing. I decided to go with quite a dark colour tone. This included a very blue tone and quite dark shots. This was achieved on premier pro by lowing the exposure of each shot, I also added the SL IRON NDR look to give the product a more blue colouring. I decided to go with quite a dark and depressed tone as I wanted the aesthetic of my trailer to convey the tone and story of my trailer. In the end, I think it fulfilled its purpose significantly well. Some of the shots included in the trailer were also quite nice. My favourite one was when Lilly goes to pick up her phone in the room. The shot is only focused on the phone and the background where Lilly stands is blurred, I just think it works very effectively as it directs the audience clearly. In my opinion, I think the aesthetic of my product was creative. This was because I changed and altered many different components to allow me to the exact look that I wanted. I also went through many different looks on premier pro to try to find the right one which met my standards. My shots also included creative elements like again the phone shot and also the POV shot in the back of the Uber at the start of the the trailer. As well as that, I really like the shot of the stalker when he enters the park. I think it works well because it is an over he shoulder shot meaning they its almost from his pint of view. This evokes some emotion for the audience as you feel as if your are the stalker therefore responsible for his actions. The gate opening sound in the background also works very well alongside it. However, I think my most creative shot was the one where the stalker disappears behind the car. I personally think this shot looked good and also worked very effectively in the product. This specific shot managed to build some good tension for the audience as the stalker just seems to disappear leaving the audience curious and confused.
  • 15. Aesthetic Qualities If I could do this project again, I would of made sure every shot was perfect. By this I mean making sure that there is no shake in the shot. This is because in a few of the shots included in my product, there is a slight shake. I feel if I made this correction, my product would look even more clean and professional. As well as that, some of the lighting in my shots could have been improved. This would have made them look slightly more clear therefore again again a higher sense of professionalism to the product. As well as that, the text included in the product did work well however, I feel if I had slightly more time I could have collected a wider range of text in during pre production meaning I may have been able to find a slightly better text that may have worked more effectively. I really like my products colour tone as it fits really well with the theme of the trailer. Because of this, I want it be perfect on every shot and I feel on one specific shot the colour tone could have been slightly improved. This is because all of my product includes a very blue tone and one shot has slightly too much orange and yellow in it. I did notice this during production and I did edit that specific shot. However, I feel it still could have done with a slightly more blue tone. This is so the same depressed theme is maintained throughout.
  • 16. Aesthetic Qualities In my opinion, I think my poster does look good. This is because I really like the simple but effective aesthetic of it. The black background and the light grey font really correspond well together. I decide to go with a dark coloured theme as I wanted my poster to reflect the theme of my trailer. I also think the large image of Lilly was photographed well and looks good against the black background. Similarly to the background, it also corresponds well with the light grey text. The billing block at the bottom of the page also came out very good. I wanted to include a billing block as I wanted my poster to look as real as possible. The emotion on Lilly's face also portrays the seriousness and mature nature of the trailer. This is a good feature to include as the poster fulfils its purpose by advertising the trailer correctly. . On the poster, I also added the gradient tool. This was used to add a sort of fade effect form Lilly to the Title font. It was also used to try and darken Lilly to fit with the dark background. The font included on the poster works well. I decided on that specific font as it almost looks handwritten. This is good as I wanted Lilly's immaturity and innocence to be portrayed on the poster in some way and if felt this was the best way to do it. However, although I do like the font I feel it could have perhaps been improved. This is because I could have chosen something slightly more intense to show the intense nature of the film. As well as that, a different font may have appealed to my target audience more as the immaturity of this may not appeal to them in the same way something more intense and mature would. As well as that, although the quality of the photo is good, I feel it is a little to bright for the poster. To improve, I could have shot it in darker lighting or edited the photo individually to make the exposure on it slightly lower. I feel this would have made it fit in with the theme of the rest of the poster more effectively.
  • 17. Audience Appeal My target audience was both genders in the age range 55+. I found this out whilst researching my audience during the research process. To target this specific audience, I made sure that my product conveyed quite a mature theme. I did this during filming and during my editing process. I decide to film in quite dull and dark lighting. This was to convey the tone of the product but also to try to target my target audience. During editing, I added a filter and did some colour correction on all of my shots. This made the product have a more depressing and mature look to it therefore targeting a more mature audience. This would not interest the younger generation as it does not include the vibrancy which they desire in a film/trailer. The story of my product also appeals to my audience. This is because I feel it would not interest the younger generation as it may bore them or perhaps be too complex for them. The trailer would interest the older generation as it includes quite suspenseful shots meaning they would be gripped. One of the main reasons why my product would appeal to my audience is the genre. This is because the thriller genre is very popular with a more mature audience. This is evidenced n my secondary audience research. Although my product does attract all genders, I feel it may attract females more. This I because although it includes intense shots, it does not include the action and danger that a male audience may require.
  • 19. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? – I think the video is really impressive, I especially like the audio, the background sound effects like the birds singing at the beginning and the sound of the mum cleaning the chopping board are heightened and emphasise the normality of the day and make the video more professional and realistic. – The camera positioning is good, the shots are always in focus and there are a wide range of shots included which make the advert more interesting for the audience. – I like the special effects added to the poster • What improvements could have been made to the product? – The colour grading through the video to create a dark and grunge aesthetic is effective and suits the horror movie style that the advert is supporting, however I think the advert could of done with more colours and different lighting for variety. – I liked the parts of the video with text which built up the tension of the advert but I thought the font could have been more sinister and would’ve made the video look a bit more professional
  • 20. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – I thought the speeding up the shots nearer to the end was a good technique to use – At the start the shots fade out into black before the next shot takes place, this with the violin also playing make for a good emotional scene. – When the character goes into her room and the close up of the iPhone is the only thing that’s in focus is a good use of where you want your audiences attention to be and also generates a feeling of paranoia because its most likely going to be the stalker . – The words that appear on the screen are cut well and look good within the scene. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The shots are done really well but they maybe could improve with a stabiliser and a few more colour grading edits to make it seem more authentic. • At the end when the stalker is at the door and says hi lilly, I think he could of seemed a bit more genuine but when you don’t have actors that’s fair enough.
  • 21. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – I like the screen colour because it’s look so creepy and nervous. – The actors look amazing facial expressions and body languages! I really impressed. – The camera movement are excellent. I like that way very smooth to move the camera. – The fonts are really cool. Nice to match horror/thriller film. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • You might need bit more focus because I can see some scenes had bit blurry. • Some scenes might need bit more brighter.
  • 22. Peer Feedback Summary After reading my peer feedback, I do agree with it both positives and negatives. Firstly, I agree with the idea of how the background sound effects worked really well. This was because they made the product seem more realistic therefore adding a sense of professionalism to the trailer. I also agree with the comments about how speeding up the shots as they trailer went on was a good technique to use. This is because it helps build suspense and tension throughout the trailer. The point about how I open my product I also agree with as this does create a very emotional scene and atmosphere for the product. I do also agree with some of my criticism. For example, the point about lighting. Some of my shots could have done with slightly better lighting. This would have made the product as a whole look even more professional. I also agree with the idea of how my text could have been improved. I thought it worked well on my poster but perhaps not as well in my trailer However, I did also disagree with some of the points made. For example, the point about my shots being out of focus. This may have been due to when I exported the file as when shot and whilst in editng, none of my shots were out of focus. As well as that, I disagree with the point of how I should have varied the colour tone of the trailer. I disagree with this because I wanted the product to maintain a dark and depressing tone therefore I wanting the same colour tone throughout my trailer.
