` In Kindred, Octavia Butler combines elements of science fiction and historical fiction to create a new
genre. The science fiction aspect allows Butler s main character, Dana, to travel back to a southern
plantation in the 1800s. The historical fiction part of the novel makes the story extremely believable
and realistic. Butler uses these two genres to expose the harsh realities of life for an African American
on an antebellum plantation in the 1800s, as well as to highlight that similar prejudices continue to
exist in California in the 1970s. Kindred does not fit neatly into one specific genre because it
incorporates elements from both science fiction and historical fiction which makes it into a new
category. Kindred has many elements of science fiction because the mysterious element of time travel
is key to the novel. In this novel, the main character, Dana, lives in California during 1976 and travels
back in time to the antebellum South. She routinely travels back in time to save her ancestor, Rufus,

The California prison system was created in response to the increased amount of criminal activity that
sparked during the Gold Rush years. Prior to the Gold Rush, California had prided itself on being a

growth surged, especially amongst foreign convicts and aliens , resulting in increased crime. At first, it
was decided that punishment for small crimes would be a beating by whip while punishment for

presents itself in an enormous amount which allows the brain to change and adapt. When a child is
bestowed with a traumatic experience at a young age they learn from that and are effected

coming from parents it already sets a path to follow and in a way already makes them who they are,

Throughout the novel, The Stranger by Albert Camus, the protagonist Meursault is tortured and
motivated by the presence of the sun. The sun symbolizes life in the sense that it embodies the
inescapable fact of life, known as death. The sun crops up over and over again throughout the novel
from Maman s funeral to the Arab on the beach, and eventually to Meursault in the courtroom. This
reinforces the notion that the sun mirrors life as well as society, as it is always present. The sun
mirrors society based on the fact that it is constantly oppressing Meursault, just as society seems to in
regards to his unorthodox actions and emotions. From beginning to end, Meursault is significantly
affected by the heat of the sun both physically and mentally. The heat of the sun is the driving force
behind Meursault s actions for the duration of the novel as well as that it physically harms and bothers
him. Meursault is constantly complaining about the heat, stating that it is making him sweat or that it
is burning him, once again reflecting the fact that it symbolizes the cruelty and judgement that comes
with life. The sun s heat is such an unbearable presence for Meursault that it literally pushes him to the

Standardized Databases And Benchmarks For Experiment
In order to evaluate which approach is better in this field, some standardized databases and
benchmarks for experiment are designed. Many databases are designed for different kinds of methods,
owing that different methods may have different assumptions on shapes. A commonly used database is
99shapes, by Kimia et al. It contains ninety nine planar shapes which classified into nine classes, with
eleven shapes in each. Shapes in the same class are in different variant form, including occluded,
noised, rotated, etc. Other databases including MPEG 7 Shape Dataset [5], Articulated Dataset,
Swedish Leaf Dataset and Brown Dataset are used to have further experiments. Similar to [13],
Precision and Recall is used for benchmark for the reason of fair comparisons. C. Results and
Discussion Table I shows the optimal result from test on 99shape dataset. The numbers of points we
sampled from the shapes are 50, 50 and 25 for RSD, RAD and TF respectively. For the articulated
dataset, 45, 35 and 45 points are sample for RSD, RAD and TF. Retrieval result on articulated dataset
was presented in Table I. We have noticed that result on 99shape from RAD is slightly better than
