2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1 This video is all in black and white which I like as it
makes you think of it being in the past kind of or
that it shows more of a story I feel when it comes
to my video I don’t want my entire video to be in
black and white but some parts so it switches to
colour then non colour making it more
entertaining for people to watch because I don’t
want to do the entire video in black and white is
because I feel that the song I chose isn’t like a
sad/dramatic song where this one is so it was
more moving to have in in black and white where
if I did it wouldn't really go very well so I thought
having no colour and colour will will make some
parts more moving but still not making it sad as
its not a very sad song. The camera with the top 2
pictures, when they film theses videos they
follows them around like to show their life in 3
minutes which is what the song is about. Where
with the bottom picture that video is again all in
black and white and switches to different people.
Also it stays the same position for the entire
video.
4. Product 2 With this one I liked that they got the reflection of
someone in a puddle which I would like to try
however it might not work as it might be hard to
dos it’s a puddle but I might see if I can as I like
the effect it has also with the colour tone they
have used is a red tone throughout the video
which I could also do as its different and mixing
the black and white with a really colour part
might make it look better. Again with the neon
lights I really like the look of that and I feel that
even if he song has nothing to do with it I’ve
noticed that most songs with the music video the
video doesn't really go with the song anyway so I
feel adding the glow sticks will make it look cool
with the colour tone change. The camera for this
video again moves with the song and the people
in it to make it interesting to watch than it just
standing still while everyone else moves which I
don’t particularly like I prefer when the camera
moves that’s what keeps me watching the video
as I don’t get bored as I see new things every time
not the same things where I would uninterested.
5. Product 3
With the last one I really liked the way they spilt
the page to see both the singers in their own
rooms and they’re singing the same song
together like they are in the same room when
they’re not by the editing of the video which
makes it look different then throughout it, it then
changed to one of them then the other so its not
the same thing through it all which I liked as well
which made it entertaining to watch. I also find
this song a little slow like there’s not a lot
happening with the song but when you watch the
video you get more attached to it as you’re
watching things happen which I liked a lot. It also
shows the connection they have between the two
singers so when watching you’re wanting to find
out what happens next which keeps you watching
which is the whole point when it comes to
making a music video for your songs. With the
camera work its like a story at the begin of the
video as the girl comes out her car and she drops
something so the male helps her and then he
starts singing about he and then it switches to
them both in their own rooms but singing
together so it sometimes stays in the same
position but also moves which again I like because
its always different which draws me in.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
• In my video I’m wanting my camera work to kind of tell the story by moving
around than just standing still the entire time which might get a little boring
and repetitive after a while so I would like it to move around and have some
standing still ones as well to make it different but not all the same. The
people in it will be acting out the thing to happen for example would want
someone to be in the garden as one of the lyrics are talking about the
garden. With the editing I want to put all my clips together to se what I have
and then mix them up as there isn’t really a story to the video I wan to do so
I will see which clip looks best at a specific place and time of the song. The
lighting I’m wanting it to be either dark or light but I’m wanting to put a
colour over the video like a blue or a red to make it look different than it
being just normal colour but I won’t know till I film and start to edit it. The
sound I don’t want any sound when filming but obviously when I come to
editing it I will put the song I have chosen in it so it’s a music video. The
special effect that I will use is the colour over the video again until I see the
edit I will see if I want to. If I don’t then I could make other thing have an
effect but wont know until I film my video.
8. Genre Chacteristics
• In most music videos that are similar to the music that I chose for my
video is mostly about two people a male and a female in love and I
feel nowadays that’s want songs are about a people sing about their
life and love is involved in that so when they have a
girlfriend/boyfriend they sing about how happy they are or when the
break up they sing a sad song about them which what it’s mainly in.
with the song I chose it sounds sad but it’s a bit of both I feel that the
music is more upbeat then the lyrics but I wouldn't say it’s a sad song
it’s more about him being with a female and how he’s feeling. Also
the song I chose hasn’t got a music video so I’ve gone on similar
songs that are about a female and a male and seen how they did
their video however I’m not going to make my video anything to do
with a female and male as I feel that its not very appropriate to have
that as its meant to be family friendly.
9. Chosen approach/justification
• For my video I have decided to film in two places as I wont be able to do all
of it as I wont have time to so ill have to film most of it at college then bits
where I can do at home ill have to film it on my phone which I wont mind as I
think it will make the video look better as there’s going to be some good
quality clip then some less good quality on my phone however it will make it
look like the video has flashbacks or I did it on purpose to make it look
different and obvious that I wanted it different quality. The next thing I’m
decided to do was with the ones where I have to film at home I’m still going
try and get some glow sticks are sparkler I feel that it might be easier to get
sparklers as near me there isn't any shops where you can buy glow sticks.
Another thing is I'm hoping to have 2 people or 1 depending on who is here
and hat I'm wanting for my video for most of it it will be only 1 or 2 and will
be part of the time like the ones videoing at home but they wont be hard to
do alone as I can get someone in my family to help. A new idea I came up
with which was only new which is to make it interesting a little more is
adding more clips of random things that couples do so like bowling I could
add things like that.
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
11. Experiment 1 –
Process
What I did for this experiment was filmed my friends doing
different things some of it is just them dancing then some are
when they’re just sat which I prefer lot and they kept swopping
places so when it came to me editing it I was able to cut it
when they changed places so when you watch it all the way
through it look cool as it’s different each time. I feel the ending
bit where it starts of them sitting on the stairs till the end is the
best bit as we were more into it where the beginning I wasn’t
sure what to do as it wasn’t really planned like our main one is
so I’m not keen on the beginning but till it gets to the stairs bit I
really like it. The tools I used in my experiment was a camera
and two people and that was it I just filmed them doing
different things so when it came to editing I chose the parts I
liked the most, took away the voices and sound effects in the
video so it was quiet so I could add the song over the top
which was 911 by Frank ocean and Tyler, The creator. I think it
went well with the video and the way I edited.
12. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
• The elements that I would use for my actual video is a little bit of the
swopping over of two people maybe because I liked the way it looked when I
edited it altogether.
• A bit of dancing, I know for sure I don’t want lip synching as that’s not the
type of video I’m wanting to make I like it to be abut different people and not
really about the video as I find that better and because for my audience and
it being family friendly I think its best to go away from the video but it still
fitting with the music when editing. It might not make sense to not doing
anything with the song but with my experiment one I didn't do anything that
was about the song I just filmed hem doing some dancing and more and I
feel it went well with the song so that’s what ill be doing for my video.
13. Experiment 2 –
Process
When I did my second experiment I know for sure I don’t
want to do lip synching one so I just did another move
around one but with no dancing just moving around so I
can practice cutting the parts I don’t want and putting
the parts I want together however with this one I found
out that with this one when editing it I need to tell the
people in my video to stand there for couple of seconds
so the clips aren’t too short or too long so its smoother
as I had to cut either a lot or too little out and it was
getting harder for me to make it flow well. As you can
see in these’s clips I wanted a mix so there were both of
them together or they were separate which I liked so it
was different but still the same in a way. The part where I
would fix is the ending when the girl pretends to hit the
camera I wish there was something I could add before
that so when the music changes it goes better with it but
it’s a little out but that’s what I can do when It comes to
filming my actual music video.
14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product? What about this process has been notable [positive and
negative]?
• The elements I will use for my music video are the different clips but not
exactly the same to the point where it’s a double of my experiments but I do
like that look but there will be different parts as I’m doing some at college
and at home. I feel that most of the parts that I have done at college for the
experiment I will add parts similar to my actual video as I like them like the
stairs parts in the other experiment where with this on I liked that I mixed
the people up they weren't together all the time. I also know for next time to
make sure I have enough for the music and when the good parts fit the the
song as well like in the last experiment I did I wish it fit ore like the ending
when she pretends to kick the camera, I wish it was 2 seconds later but I still
feel it went well and doesn't look bad.
