3. RESEARCH
My research was, at first, quite hard for me, as I didn't
not have a clue what I wanted to complete for my music
video. All I knew was that I wanted to do the pop music
genre.
My first thought was a sad, scary or depressing song as I
think they are much easier and generalised songs to
complete a more generalised story to. When I say
generalised, I mean you don’t have to think too much
into the story you are trying to create.
I knew some artists that are indie/ alternative. Billie Eilish
came into my head straight away. Four out of five of my
song were hers. This was an error to me because I could
of researched a lot more artists to expand my knowledge
on different songs from different artists.
4. RESEARCH
For my second song, I thought of a song from a video
game (The Sims), New politics – Everywhere I go (kings
and Queens). Even though this is explicit content, I could
of thought of a rebellious storyline for it as the song
lyrics are quite rebellious, but I did not as in their actual
music video, they just had people playing with fire and
people smashing things, It was hard to visualize anything
different. This song was basically a gap filler for my five
songs. This was not very great or helpful as I just wasted
time on it.
But researching the artist ‘Billie Eilish’ Helped me with
figuring out what the two songs I thought were the
easiest for me, to do. Then deciding between them. That
was an improvement for me otherwise I would not have
any structure to my thought.
5. RESEARCH
A good thing that had been done in my research was
researching one artist and expanding my knowledge on
those songs. I had also decided on the two songs that I
was going to pick; this was decided by the overbalance
of songs. The thing that I could have improved on was
my variety of artists. I could have broadened my search
of songs, so I had more to choose from. Overall, my
research was good for my standard. I could have
researched more on my variety of artists and songs.
6. PLANNING
After I had picked the two songs that I had the most
ideas for, I completed two mind maps that reflected my
ideas (three for each song). I think that this was a good
thing for me to do as I did not know which song to do,
‘bury a friend’ or ‘Lovely’ (ft. Khalid). These songs were
both by Billie Eilish.
My first mind map was about the song, ‘Bury a friend’
(Billie Eilish). It had tree ideas on it. One idea had a
tensional theme of the supernatural, It was meant to
have a lot of transitions within and was about a person
trying to escape a murder that they have committed
(chosen idea). The second idea had the transitions but
with added sound effects and was a sinister story about
mental health. The third idea was about an animated
music video and that follows the lyrics (the way that they
sound).
7.
8. PLANNING
I ended up choosing the first idea about a person who
runs away from a murder that they have committed. I
think that this was good idea to do this idea as
compared to the second and third because those two
ideas had more floors to them than the chosen idea. The
second idea that was about a specific subject (mental
health), I think I would have found it hard to create this
video as it is a sensitive subject for me so I did not
bother making this video. The third idea had an
animated side to it, I thought this was a good idea at first
but then I thought that it would be too hard for me as I
have never animated before, I know how to draw but
never animated. I thought that this would be too
ambitious for me right now as have never used a
graphics tablet never mind getting to know Premier Pro
more.
9. PLANNING
I think that the idea that I have chosen was great for me
as it allowed me to advance my knowledge about Premier
Pro. For this bit of my planning, I could of improved on
developing my ideas a bit more so I knew a bit more
about them. I only had the general concept of them.
My second mind map was about the song ‘Lovely’ (ft
Khalid by Billie Eilish). I completed three ideas for this
song as I actually did not know with song/idea I was
going to chose. The first idea was about using the sad
minor key of music to convey a bad relationship story.
My second idea was about a child that grows up and
moves out, I would use the pre – chorus well for this
idea. The third idea was the same as the second idea but
using the camera in a way of first person view.
10.
11. PLANNING
I did not choose any of these ideas in the end but the
idea that I would have picked is the second one. This is
because of the good build up (pre chorus) that I would
have used intentionally. These ideas could have been
improved on by advancing them a bit more so that I had
more of an idea of what they were about. The reason why
I did not choose this song is because I just liked the first
‘Bury a friend’ idea more than these ideas. I did like this
song even though I did not choose it.
I think that if I would have improved on the ideas and
advanced on them a bit more, I might have chosen a
different idea or song. In my planning, I think I did well
on thinking of ideas for my two songs to decide on what
I was doing. I just could of improved on those ideas.
12. TIME MANAGEMENT
In my opinion, I think I did quite well with my time
management of work, even though at the start I was
behind in my work as I was trying to put as much detail
into the pro-forma as possible. I caught up as I
completed the pro-forma on the Thursday/Friday of the
week that we started the pro-forma. I think that this was
great as I was not behind on work. If I did not complete
anything in time, I could just do in the study days that
we had two days a week. As I was completing work I put
my work on my blog to mark my progress.
For my Music video, I had made a schedule that was
great as I could look and see what I was going to film
that day. Most of this was at night ( outside of my house)
but it was safe. In the week we were meant to film I had
filmed and finished by the end of the Wednesday of that
week, this was really good.
13. TIME MANAGEMENT
Editing my video in the last two weeks before the
evaluation, It was great, I was creating ‘Practice’ pieces
that made up my whole video, I was finished and all the
‘Practice’ videos and my music video were on my blog.
This was good for me.
Then I had a week off (after the holiday) to recover from
an accident. After I came back to college, I was really
surprised to still be on time with my work, I came back
and now I am writing this evaluation and nearly finished
it on time.
14. TIME MANAGEMENT
Overall my time management has been good considering I
was behind in the first week. This was the only thing that I
needed to improve on. Apart from this, I am very happy
with myself because I needed no additional time. With
additional time, I think my video would have ended up the
same.
15. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
After reviewing my music video, there were similarities and differences
between my music video and The work I am comparing it to. I am
comparing my work to Billie Eilish’s actual ‘Bury a friend’ video, which I
did get ideas from her video as it is aesthetically pleasing to me and
her audience.
One similarity is that I have used the same technique as Billie Eilish's
‘Bury a friend’, in the scene with the camera in the hallway. In my
opinion, the technique of spinning the camera a round looks like the
room is spinning. This is a great technique to use, when filming any
type of horror video because it adds another element of tension to the
plot. It is like looking into the criminal’s mind. (time code- actual 2:22 –
2:38 / mine 0:57 – 1:10)
16. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
CAMERA
There are lots of differences in my music video to Billie’s music video. One
difference is that I have used less transitions when filming than Billie Eilish’s
video. I think that I could have used a lot more of these. Such as in Billie’s video
she was being pulled down, the camera looked like it was going with her, through
the floor. This was a great technique and I should of used It in my final music
video. (2:07 – 2:20 actual video)
Another difference in technical quality is (in mine) in the intro, I have put a whole
scene in place. In this scene is a dead corpse in a bin. You know (sort of) what my
music video is about in the first ten seconds. In Billie’s intro it is just a bed and a
room, so you don’t really know what it is about. I think this was good to change
the plot of my story as it creates more tension looking back or having flashbacks.
In my version of the introduction I have included three different shots, in Billie’s
video, she only included one. This was good to have lots of shots as you would
get board of having the same thing all of the time.
17. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
After reviewing my music video, there were similarities and differences
between editing my music video and Billie’s ‘Bury a friend’. I am
comparing my work to Billies because I had found her work inspiring
and I got lots of ideas to put in mine.
One similarity was the lighting. I had altered the lighting in editing my
music video as it was too light. I used the colour tool in Premier Pro to
do this. This lighting is not just similar to Billies but similar to all
horror movies you might see. They all have the same dark lighting,
which fits the aesthetic of the song.
18. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
There are some differences in my music video and the actual music
video. One difference is that I used made the same quick fade
transitions over and over again. In Billie Eilish’s video, they must have
used several transitions in editing. In my opinion, I could of used more
as it could of added to the aesthetic of the music video. (The whole
piece)
Another difference is that in verse two, when the hand is going down
the door, I change the scale act like a jump scare (1:50 – 1:52). In Billie’s
video, nothing changes scale. In my opinion, this adds to the aesthetic
of the piece and matches the theme. Makes it look scarier to the
audience.
19. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Looking back on my work, the strong points were the aesthetically
pleasing parts, such as the locations, lighting, effects and props. The
music I have picked fitted the music video I had chosen for it. This is
because of the theme I based it on, therefore made it engaging for the
audience. By developing and adapting my storyboard, editing my clips
in Premier Pro and adding different props (such as fake blood and
waring suitable clothing) as this made my music video creative.
The aspects of my music video that I like were using the greenscreen at
the end, to create an effect of the ghost turning into the victim. Also I
liked my construction of props such as the bin bag corpse in the
introduction, that I made out of recycling materials. The final thing I
liked was the weather in the whole music video, I thought that I gave
more of an impact on the theme and engaged the audience more.
20. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
After reviewing my video, I know that I need to improve
on filming in the studio as the green screen did not look
as believable as I had thought. I would make sure the
green screen is not creased in order to create a more
clear image to make it more believable. I would also
adjust the lighting as it was too bright to make edit
easier for myself to edit.
21. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
In my chosen song, Bury a friend, it started with an introduction. What I liked about
my introduction was that I had started in the middle of the tension. For example,
the song started when the criminal had committed the murder and I had added
props such as the corps in the bin. This was aesthetically pleasing for my audience
the song matched the theme, straight away. Additionally, I liked the weather, this
was perfect as the rain had connotations of gloomy or miserable. this adds to the
aesthetic of the song as the criminal feels guilty about the murder. What I did not
like in my introduction was how long the intro was. I filmed a whole dragging
scene and if I put that in It would of looked as good. As well as this I did not like
the blur, on the binbag even though it could match to mystery of what It could be.
In my opinion is does not look as aesthetically pleasing as I had hoped.
22. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Next in my chosen song was my three choruses. They each became
more intense in blood as the song plays through. This adds to the
aesthetically pleasing qualities in my music video. In addition to this I
really like how the ‘anonymous’ person is turning their head like they
are paranoid. These two points add guilt to the tension in the music
video which make it aesthetically pleasing for my audience.
23. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Verse one and Verse two are the next pieces of my chosen song. I like that these two parts are
flash backs to change the structure of my music video so that it is not like a traditional story.
These are aesthetically pleasing because the criminal has a memories that will haunting their
mind. This memory would add tension as it would haunt them for the rest of their remaining
life.
Another thing that would be aesthetically pleasing for my audience would be lighting and
setting. I like it when the lighting, my phone is flashing on and off on a wall (verse one). This
fits the theme of my piece because it could be classed as stereotypically scary. For example you
could see this in a haunted house. The setting was the back alleyway to my house. It worked
well for me because of the space it provided. It had spiders and to parallel walls and a gate at
the end. It could look like some where a gang would hang out and it looks stereotypically scary.
This would be aesthetically pleasing to my audience.
Another thing in both verse one and two was the hand that was running down the wall. It was
creepy to my audience as it added another horror filled element. This was aesthetically pleasing
to the audience as it was the matched the theme I was going with.
24. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
My pre-chorus was aesthetically pleasing to my audience. It matches the
theme of my song. My pre-chorus is a darkly lit hallway rotating. I got
this idea from the original music video to ‘Bury a friend’. In my opinion,
this is aesthetically pleasing to my audience because of the lighting and
symmetry in the hallway that could be recognizable from literally every
horror film, which makes it match the song’s theme.
25. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
My Bridge is the next aesthetically pleasing part of my song to my
audience. It is about the criminal turning into the ghostly figure. I think
that this is aesthetically pleasing to my audience because you can see
the criminal change, sort of, in gradual way. The dark lighting, that I
have edited, helps this. The only disadvantage would be that I could
have altered the green screen to be a little bit more believable. Even
though I couldn’t help the lighting in the studio, I could of improved this
by moving the lights back.
26. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
The end is aesthetically pleasing to my audience as it is
unexpected which is great for a horror/scary storyline. The
ending is when the ghostly criminal turns into the victim. This
ending is aesthetically pleasing to the audience because the
edited shots work in time with the music. Like I said with the
Bridge, the green screen parts didn’t look believable. I could
improve this next time by moving the lights backwards so it
could be easier to alter in editing.
27. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I had to make my piece appeal to my audience. In order to do
this I changed the structure of my piece to be unlike a normal
story, added props to make the piece more interesting and
added effects. This made my piece more interesting and appeal
to my target audience.
The structure of the piece made my music video appeal to my
audience as I made my video like a story. It was not a normal
story, I had ordered it so that it would make the most sense
in a scary/horror story. For example, the introduction had the
audience shock when they saw the corpse in the bin. You
entered (the audience) in the middle of all the tension. Another
example, in the two verses, they were flashbacks. They built
even more tension to the already existing tension, this would
appeal to the audience as it would fit with the theme of the
song.
28. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I have added props to make my music video appeal to my audience.
These props included fake blood, masks and phones. For example, in
my music video, the first prop that you saw was the blood. This could
of set the mood for the whole piece. The first thing that my audience
thought my music video was about murder, as the connotations of
blood are murder etc. Another example, is in verse two, I used a phone
to express my ‘weapon’ that I used. This emphasized to the audience
that the anonymous criminal was thinking about actually murdering
them, adds more tension to the whole plot.
I have edited my music video to appeal to my audience. I used editing
techniques such as changing the colour, adjusting the lighting of the
clips and adding a simple transition appeals to the audience. These
three editing techniques change the mood and aesthetic of the piece.
For example, I have change the lighting in all of my clips to be the
same as this adds more depth and darkness to the story. It makes the
whole music video look scarier and match the theme of my chosen
song.
29. IN CONCLUSION...
In my first ever music video, I have included tones of
different techniques, edits and learning. I learned lots of
new techniques, such as, how to use a green screen (edit
it in premier pro), How to do a simple transition (in
Premier Pro) and finally how to properly use Premier Pro
as it new to me. I thought This video was great for my
first try. My favourite part was the ending bit as I got
very creative when turning into the victim.
31. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
I really liked the dark theme and how you can’t see too much of
what is happening at one time, it makes it feel creepy and goes
really well with the song. I really liked how shaky the camera was
even if it wasn’t intentional because it sort of made it look like
somebody was shivering. I also think that the lighting and blood
was really good and it really sold the feel of the video. I also liked
how the video was only in one or two locations it really made it feel
a lot more trapped and went really well with the song.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think that the green screen parts of the video were really
obviously green screened and I think it kind of dethatched it from
the rest of the video, I think it could be fixed if it was lit slightly
better of changed a bit in post. A lot of shots were also re used and
it was really obvious so they could maybe be altered slightly in
editing.
32. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
I like how the song is relevant to the video as well as the effects. I
also like the fast transitions that instantly switch to another scene.
The use of green screen is also pretty seamless. I also liked the use of
the blood in the video and how the camera focused on that part
during the scene. I also like the lighting as it matches well with the
theme.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The only problem is with the green screen, as there are some parts
where you can see parts of the other clip. You can remove this by
going into Premier Pro and messing with the effects to remove the
spots and lines that come from the other clip.
33. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
The song you have used is relevant
Good cinematic shots at the beginning
Lighting is dark and links to the dark connotations that you are
portraying in your video
Video tells a story
What improvements could have been made to the product?
•Green screen part is rough around the edges however this can easily be
altered within premier
•The shot of the hand coming down the wall could've been better if the
hand left a trail of blood behind
34. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
Yes, but most of this was the green screen and it was very hard to
alter.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
N/A
35. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
In my music video people generally liked the theme, lighting
and locations of the piece. But they had issues with the green
screen shot at the end. I totally agree with this but I will say
that it was quite hard for me to complete this as it was so
hard to alter as in the studio (where it was filmed) the lighting
was bright and the green screen floor was wrinkled which I
could not solve as it had to be that way.
For next time, working with a green screen, I will make sure I
work around the fact that the lighting is bad by turning it
down. I could just film parts at a time, so that it will not look
like I just cropped it into the video.
