2. Existing Product
This is a fashion magazine called dress to kill.
I really like the style of front cover. I love the
simplistic look with not too many cover lines
but this is because it is a special issue. I like
the classy clean cut look of the front cover as
well. I think the style of my magazine will be
similar but less classy as that isn’t the fashion
style I’m really going for. However I definitely
want a similar clean cut look where
everything works so smoothly together. For
example I love the way the bold earrings
match up with the tag line at the right ride.
Both with the angle and the colours. I love
the way that angles are used within this as
well. I just think it looks so well put together
and the bold colours of the earrings against
the plain background clashes so the are the
first thing that grabs your attention.
3. Existing Product
These are double page spreads in this
magazine. The first being an advert which
works so well with the look of the magazine.
I love the mixture of black and white with
coloured pictures makes the advert stand
out a lot more within the pages rather than
being something you would just flip past.
The second DPS is an article on the latest
trends of the new season. This is similar to
what I want to write my article on therefore
this shows that I’m going the right way
about looking at articles I need to write. I
like the way this is mapped out due to it
showing examples of things that are
trending on the cat walk. The main
difference with mine is that mine will be
more street style based rather than catwalk
based.
4. Existing Product
This is a beauty/fashion magazine called
Bello. I like the colour scheme of this front
cover as I think the blue and the gold are
quite a unique combination and definitely
catches your eye. I love the simple set out
and how the photo of the model is the first
thing that catches your eye because its so
bold with the blue as the background. I
really like the bold look of the model that
works so well and catches eyes. I would
really like to have a bright background to
help my model stand out more in the centre
of the page. I also really like the fonts they
use as they seem very classic and simple
which add a more sophisticated feel to the
magazine which I think I definitely will
incorporate that into my magazine cover
because that’s the type of look I want to get
for my magazine.
5. Existing Product
These are two DPS, The first was a part of a collection
of images they had, I really like the idea of having a
collection of images showing one style/look off. I love
the bold background again which seems to be
popular in this magazine. I definitely think this is a
good technique to get the main pictures of the
models to pop out and I definitely think this is
something I would like to use within my magazine to
help certain clothes and features of the model stand
out more.
The second DPS is about a singular model to feature
in the magazine as an “editors pick” I really like this
idea as it gets the editors opinions on certain things
as the editor obviously knows fashion therefore I
would quite like to include a page like this. I think the
articles would obviously be different and more based
on clothes rather than a certain model. I also think
this shows the audience what certain individuals like
rather than just what is popular on the cat walk.
6. Existing product
This magazine is more based on beauty but still a
fashion magazine. The content of this is not what I
want to include at all. However I really like the style
and the photography used in this magazine. I love the
bold colours in the outfits matching with the make up
and the theme of the bright reds within this front
cover. I would like to keep a colour theme with this
way with plain everything else and work things
around the clothes that I’m using within my
magazine. For example my double page spreads are
going to be all different colour scheme wise to fit the
images that I take and use on each double page
spreads. Purely so I am not tied down to one colour
scheme because then every page will be the same
and all the outfits will have to work with similar
colours and that’s not what I want. Hence why I’m
going to make colour schemes very minimalistic.
7. Existing product
Again I love the photography style with these
images. I would like to use similar ideas for my
adverts and things in my magazine. I think it is
important to have a few adverts on DPS
8. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
A lot of the products have their way of making pictures and certain features stand out with colour
and placement which shows that everything is very well put together. I also think they both have
articles that are broad and look at things collectively rather than individually. I think this is
definitely a good way of doing it because the whole fashion industry is all about collections and
trends.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own
production work?
I definitely like the contrast between photos and background I think that is definitely a great
technique to get the photos of the models to pop out and for them to be the main focus on the
page. I think I will mostly use this with my front cover as I want my model to be the main focus of
my front cover. I think with fashion magazines although the content is important a lot of people
are so easily drawn to good photos.
10. Audience research
• Observation: This shows that majority of people don’t read magazines or only read
them occasionally.
• What this says about my audience: That my main audience is the people who will read
magazines so a small portion of the people who have actually filled out this survey.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I want to make it something that will be
eye catching to people who don’t buy magazines to make it stand out from the crowd.
11. Audience research
• Observation: This is a pretty even cut of no and yes. This shows me to pay attention to
the answers of the main people who know what they like within fashion but also look at
what people who don’t pay attention to fashion think about the industry.
• What this says about my audience: That there is a mixture of people who took my
survey and what they are into definitely varies.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: The product will appeal to my audience
by making it so it’s a general and has lots of different styles therefore appeals to a larger
amount of people.
12. Audience research
• Observation: This shows that pictures are more important on front covers compared to
headlines and tag lines therefore this will be my main focus on my front cover
• What this says about my audience: That they are more drawn in by images more than
the content and then get dragged in more when they read the taglines and headlines
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will make sure my image on my front
cover is eye catching and is the biggest focus on my front cover just to make sure im
drawing people in.
13. Audience research
• Observation: The majority of people want an equal amount of each, images and text which is pretty
simple to do.
• What this says about my audience: That although they enjoy looking at images, the content of the
magazines are still important to them and the articles do matter to people.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: What I will do because of this information is spend
equal amounts of time with the text and photos. Therefore they will both be up to the same
standards and be equally good on my DPS, due to me knowing that my dps was not my strong point
on my last project.
14. Audience research
• Observation: Mainly everyone prefers a minimalistic style for a magazine.
• What this says about my audience: That they don’t like too much going on, on a
dps. They want something eye catching but simplistic which was the style I wanted
to go for anyway.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will make sure it is still interesting
with a simple layout that doesn’t look busy or messy on the page.
15. Audience research
• Observation: A lot of people have different outlooks of what is trending
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
16. Audience research
• Observation: A lot of people think of the same things when thinking of fashion
magazines no matter what, Everyone thinks of that pretty girl on the front.
• What this says about my audience: They read primarily the type of magazine I
want to make.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I’m going to make my model on
the front of my magazine unique and different to the usual stereo typical
model to make mine personally more outstanding and eye catching.
17. Audience research
• Observation: That people have such a bad opinion on fashion magazines and that they
have a really bad reputation in the media
• What this says about my audience: That they don’t read modern magazines because
now models aren’t allowed to be under certain sizes in fear of encouraging eating
disorders and bad self esteem issues.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will make sure there are a variety of
models and body shapes without them being unhealthy at any end of the spectrum.
