2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. Existing Product – BRAND LOGOS
With many logos for clothing brands they are very simplistic
because they usually consist of two colours and they are
primary colours, the main colour which you see with logos
would have to be black because it goes with pretty much
everything which is something which the company would want
to make sure that happens because they want to have a logo
which they can stick with for the rest of the brands life. Also
alongside the simplistic colours they are usually quite bold and
plain because they don’t want to have a really complex design
which they are going to place on every single article of clothing
which they sell because If they change it some people may
have different opinions about it because they may prefer the old
one to the new one, and if there audience taking a dislike to the
improved logo they could take a hit when it comes to sales.
Also with the simplistic design they are usually very bold so that
I stand outs to the audience which they are trying to sell to their
audience, because they want to make sure that they make the
world know what they are and what kind of company they are.
To the left the main logo which you can see would be the
Adidas one because that is the most known one as it has been
a huge competitor in the sporting industry and the clothing
industry because they are the number 2 sports brand behind
Nike, one thing which is very abrupt with the Adidas logo would
have to be the design because they are the “Brand with three
stripes” which they are known for and also the text is very basic
in the fact that you can get it on Photoshop and also they have
decided to use lowercase lettering rather than upper case
which is strange because you would expect them to start their
company with a capital letter, unlike Palace who's branding is in
all capitals which makes them stand out because they are very
abstract.
For these brands which I have selected above I
chose them each because they sell different kinds of
clothing which you can tell by the look of them
because the Champion looks quite high-end with the
font which has been used because it looks very
formal compared to Adidas which has used a very
standard font and have used the three stripes which
represents a mountain which the majority of athletes
have to overcome to get to where they are now.
Palace is a skateboarding brand so there chosen to
use a triangle In there logo because it represents the
skateboarding culture and symbols a ramp. These
brands are very well known to their because of their
logo because everyone pretty much knows what
they are about and what kind of message they are
trying to send to their audience
3. Existing Product - CLOTHING
These images to the right hand side are the brand “PALACE” which are a
very popular and expensive brand, the reason in which this brand is
expensive would have to be the small quantity of each item in which they
sell. The main thing which you see throughout every item in the brand name
, PALACE, this is due to the fact that people want to wear the name, the
brand has realised this so they have no item of clothing in which doesn't say
palace on them they also made the brand name stand out by using a bold
font and putting the name on the front and back of most items.
With the PALACE brand they make each article of clothing stand out, this is
through making different and out there designs for each of there drops they
do this to keep the audience interested in the clothing because if they kept
bringing out the same style of design each time there audience and buyers
will get bored and possibly move to another brand for there clothing which
would lose them money. PALACE also make clothing for each style of there
audience, not everyone want constant big print and wacky design some
people prefer the simplistic design as shown in the middle on the right hand
side. They do this to make sure the audience has more of a variety to choose
from.
One way PALACE entice there audience into buying there product would be
the collaboration which they have, which gets the audience of the other
brand interested in this brand. There most recent collab has been with Stella
Artois in realising hoodies as shown in the bottom right. PALACE do not only
collab with brands they also collab with skateboarders design a skate board
deck for palace that get released. This creates a positive brand for Palace as
they are getting up and coming skate boarders to support and share their
own knowledge to create clothing that would really relate to their audience.
This shows that Palace really cares about their target audience.
4. Existing Product- MAGAZINE
Highsnobiety
Highsnobiety specializes in magazines and websites. The websites includes the
latest information on street wear, Hip Hop and even shopping. The reason I chose
to annotate Highsnobiety is because it includes very similar information on what I
intend to apply in my magazine, so I’m curious to see how they’ve presented it.
After analysing a range of magazines from series 15, I noticed a range of different
features that I really liked and enjoyed. The first feature that really stood out was
the large image placed on the front cover of each magazine. The reason behind
this is because each magazine features different music artists that are mentioned
several times. I believe this works really well because it gives it’s audience a clear
idea of what you will expect to be reading. The second feature that I notice is that
the front cover doesn’t use any colours, as everything is presented in black and
white.
I also believe this technique works very well because most magazines use bright,
vibrant and eye catching colours to grab the audiences attention, so when placed
with other magazines it will grab the attention of more customers because it is a
different approach. I also notice that on the images Highsnobiety use to promote
musicians it’s quite clear that they’re wearing clothes that Highsnobiety would
approve and advertise themselves, which I think is a really intelligent idea because
people will be inspired to wear clothing once they have seen their idols wearing it
on magazine covers. The word ‘Highsnobiety’ is placed in the top left corner on
each magazine they produce. It is presented in a very basic font. I believe this
works well because the rest of the page is presented similar to the title, which
prevents it from looking out of place.
The images above show what a Highsnobiety magazine from series 15 looks like. From this example we can see the Gucci Mane
and Playboi Carti edition. The reason I decided to chose this magazine was because it includes the same content that I will be
applying to my magazine, so I wanted to see how a professional company presented their magazine. After looking through a range
of their magazines, I believe I will take some inspiration from Highsnobiety. An example of this would be the use and size of images.
Instead of applying lots of text I will be more concerned on the images I will present to my audience as many collectors buy these
magazines for the limited edition photos it includes. This leads me onto my next point, which is why Highsnobiety magazines appeal
to certain audiences so much. The reason behind this is because people who fit into a certain society called ‘Hype Beasts’ will
spend hundreds, upon thousands of pounds on limited edition accessories, so when a magazine is produced with a well know.
figure amongst Hip Hop many people will buy this magazine in the hope they can sell it for more than they bought it for.
5. Existing Product- POSTER
In this poster there use two different urban street fonts which are
sharp and messy they have done this because it represents there
audience which are edgy skaters who like there messy baggy clothing
, this is effective because just by using these fonts its intriguing there
target audience due to it looking urban and it symbolising skate
culture. The fonts have a graffiti look to them which also shows to
there customer that it is a streetwear / skateboarding brand.
The slogan underneath the brand name as shown on the left says
“chillin with the new boat generation” this is them saying that this
style is the new generation and that anyone can wear what they
wont. This is show by the photo on the people underneath the slogan
each individual is wearing a different style and different clothing. This
is good the brand because it shows they have a broad variety of
clothing and suite every style it isn’t stuck in this one style. This
represents there audience as well with this brand being a big
skateboarding brand majority of there audience will be skaters and
skater wear what ever they like, there's so many different style with in
the skateboarding culture. Also the fact you cant see the clothing
there are wearing very clearly will make the audience and the viewers
want to go check out the store even more with the curiosity of what
on there.
The fact that the background is white this means that the urban fonts
and the selections of people stand out the most and catch peoples
eyes which is good for Stussy as a whole because there strongly
showing there target audience in this poster.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
• All my researched products are all from or are a streetwear brand and I mainly
researched streetwear brands, there items because this is what I am creating.
Also all the products I have chosen are all part of this new wave of the
streetwear culture. These products are all well know for there clothing and
fashionable look and I want to take that from this to use in why work. Another
thing witch is featured in all of these products is the variety of clothing they
sell or show in the magazine which shows the variety each brand have and the
different audiences they are trying to pull in. apart from the palace clothing
each of the other products have a monotone look to them.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
• I would like to take the monotone look from these items because I believe it
makes them look very professional and designer and its also a safe bet to go
for more a darker tone for the designs when starting out because more people
are more likely to purchase and the more people purchasing the more the
brand will spread and get bigger. Another thing I want to take from this is the
variety of items because I believe if your have a variety of products the more
chance of catching a lot more of an audience and intriguing them to your
brands website. The main thing I want to take from the magazine it the cool
astatic it has because I want mine magazine to look cool and urban like the
one shown so I will be taking inspiration from the astatic of this magazine. I
also will take inspiration from the big photos on the left pages because I think
this give a really cool look to the magazine and makes its easier for the reader
to follow due to it not being bombarded with so much writing.

25. EXPERIMENT
For my first experiment I wanted to refresh my mind in making magazines before I go on to create my own. I
started with the stock image as shown on the left hand side and used the healing tool and turned the design
already on his t-shirt to white. Then I took my design I made and sized it to the way I liked it. I the used the
warp tool and made it look like its leaning to the right like the image. after that I went onto filter and you’ve
the displace feature to make the design merge with the creases on the t-shirt the model is wearing. After all
of that I went on to use the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the model in the image and duplicate it, this was so
when I put the title I could but the duplicated model image on top of the title layer to give the effect of the
model standing in front of the title. I used the same font as the title on the articles which I place in two
different sizes on the right hand side I did this by using the text tool. I hen I changed the colours of the letters,
black in there over the t-shirt and white if there on the background. I then added a rectangle to cover a key
word ,I did this by using the shape tool. I them imported a barcode from google and used it in the bottom left
corner.
26. In this experiment I wanted to learn how to cut people out and change
the background. I started off by getting a stock image of google and
pasting it in. I then used the magnetic tool to cool the person out and
deleted the background as shown in the first 2 photos. After this is
then went back on to google and got a landscape photo which then I
put the layer on the man above the photo to give the effect that he's
in the photo.
