JESSICA CROSLAND
For my first existing product I chose a ‘fashion’ magazine brand this brand
publishes 10 issues a year and has a total readership of 1.85 million which is a
popular magazine. Fashion is a sophisticated brand that inspires and empowers
fashion and beauty lovers and to be their best selves. The target audience is
aimed at young women in which my brand is aimed at this similar audience
which is a reasons as to why I chose this one to explore.
The shot used is a medium shot which is placed at the center of the magazine
this shows the audience will see her as the main focus when looking at the
magazine. This is also shown as the model is place in front of the masthead
which also reveals her importance and that they want the model to grab the
audience's attention and buy the magazine. They have featured a celebrity
‘Hailee Stein Feld’ this is a good way to grab the audience's attention because
fans of this celebrity will want to buy this magazine as she is featured on the
front cover. I have learnt that this is a good way of advertising because
audiences like to wear what their favourite celebrities wear and keep up with
those trends. Therefore, I will include a celebrity within my products and the
celebrity will talk about my clothing line this will advertise my brand because
people are more likely to buy clothing that celebrities also wear.
The dress codes she is wearing is a black dress with colorful patches scattered
on her dress the use of ‘glitter bomb’ & ‘party’ etc. shows what type of occasion
this dress is for which is a good idea by having small words which reveal a lot
will give of hints towards the audience and I will include this on my magazine
cover because some people prefer less text and more images as a younger
audience will get bored more easily if they read a lot of text.
FASHION
MAGAZINE
• The image background has no location used and is a plain darkish blue colour and includes
another main colour a light pastel pink these colours both mix together well, and I like the idea of
using two main colours that makes the magazine look a lot more professional and stand out
towards the audience. This is something I have learnt to include when I create my products and
the colours used are feminine which also reveal the audience target to this magazine which is
female. The mise en scene of the models body language looks as if she is posing for the camera as
her eyes are looking directly into the camera this is something which will grab the audience and
the way she is posing relates towards the ‘party dress’ as if she is dancing. I also like this idea
because everything in the magazine cover almost relates towards the meaning of the magazine
which makes it easier for the audience to understand I will also plan to include this within my
magazine cover.
• A reason I chose this magazine brand is because this magazine is not too cluttered and includes
only main aspects which are needed in a magazine this is something I look for when looking into
magazines because people will prefer magazines which look easy to read and understand because
of this I decided to look more into the magazine which were by ‘fashion’ from this I found that a
lot of these magazines include a simplistic layout as shown here.
This magazine will give me a lot of inspiration for my own
magazine because I can look into the layout ideas and see
patterns in their magazines therefore, I can create my own
layouts with ideas from these fashion covers. The photography
used on the magazine covers really make the magazine look
more professional and this inspires me to create photos with
good angles and good quality. I also like how basic but effective
the photos look with not much gong on in the backgrounds I can
look more into this when I do more research.
THE KRIPT
WEBSITE
For my next existing product, I explored ‘THE KRIPT’ website this is an online clothing store with the
latest fashions and the current trends at an affordable price this brand was actually a ‘Facebook store’
concept and ‘Instagram’ profile before developing more. This website is one of my favourite websites in
which I have looked into because there is so much detail especially with the photography used and
editing to the photos. These photos aren't just basic photos which is a reason as to why I chose to look
into this because in the images above they focus a lot on multiplying the models which makes the
photo look more creative. The fonts match well with the website as a whole because there basic
colours with large capital fonts this is a basic touch but very effective because it doesn’t take over the
photos and this will grab the audience's attention. Whereas plain images used to advertise clothes is
basic and wouldn’t catch their attention as much, this is a different way of advertisement. The different
icons at the top of the magazine are clear and not overcrowded I like this idea because different
audiences might struggle to used the website as this one is easy and friendly which is a positive.
Plain background colours with
pops of colour from the
clothing this is effective and
makes the clothes stand out on
the model.
I have learnt they have Social
media handles included on
the website to reach a larger
audience
• I noticed a lot of different angles are used with the photography not just sticking to one this
has inspired me to think of creative angles I can use for my model's mise en scene of body
language because the more angles used will make my audience happy to see every angle in
the clothes. This is something I can add into my planning and try out. This has also helped me
to plan one of my experiments which will involve using Photoshop I can use photos and put
together edits (like the ones on the kript website) included with the models. I can then use
Photoshop to edit together and multiply the images and use a plain background to add in.
I looked more into the website and came across the ‘shop
Insagram’ page this is another effective way of
advertisement because the audience will look into there
Instagram account and follow onto the website which social
media is a great form of advertisement to reach every
audience.
The image on the right was a photo I saw which also inspired me
a lot this is because the image include 3 different pictures of the
same model which an edited shadow placed behind the model. I
think this is different and I love this and want to include pictures
like this on the front of my website as it looks more professional
and will make my website layout look less basic. From looking on
the website I gathered that this clothing brand appeals towards a
similar audience as my brand around 16-26 through female
models used and the type of clothing advertised.
ELLE
MAGAZINE
Elle is a worldwide lifestyle magazine that focuses on fashion, beauty, health and entertainment. It was
founded in Paris and first sold as a supplement to France Soir. This is the next existing product I have
chosen because I do actually have some of these magazines and read them from time to time it
includes a lot of fashion and helps you find out more about fashion in general. The target audience for
ELLE is women aged between 18 and 49 its readers have a median age of 34.7.
The shot used is a medium close up of the model who is known as
(Bella Hadid) who is placed in the center of the shop looking directly
at the camera. This is a good technique and a good shot choice
because making eye contact with the camera can grab the audience's
attention when looking at the magazine. This model is actually a
celebrity which straight away will grab an audience's attention if they
are a fan of this celebrity especially as they have included her name
at the side of the magazine. I also noticed the silver choice of colour
schemes with the white and black this blends well together and the
colours don’t clash therefore it makes the magazine look a lot more
professional. The fonts choice is SERIF font which is my favourite font
to use because it is large but doesn't look too heavy on the magazine
these fonts are also spaced-out letter by letter which I like, and I
could try this with my magazine. The layout plan to this magazine is a
large image which is also in front of the masthead which shows the
models importance. With fonts surrounding the image this has
helped me to figure out my layout plan because I like how the layout
doesn't look too full and crowded. The mise en scene of her facial
expression look serious and doesn't show much emotions this could
link to the fact most models ‘pose’ with a serious face and I also like
the idea of this it will make the audience question and want to read
more because it doesn't give much away.
I decided to explore more into the ELLE magazines and look inside them I found 2 two page spread
images and notice that they both had the same layout plan which was text that had been put into
paragraphs and split around the pages and then they included photos around each text. Which looks like
a really good plan because audiences like to have more photos than text when looking in a magazine
and the ELLE one includes an equal amount of both on each page. If the audience see the pages, it will
grab their attention because the images actually explain the meaning of the text, so they aren't just
random pictures which have been place on the magazine. They also include a pastel colour scheme of a
light pink with white and black this also mixes well together and the colours appeal well to there female
audience.
The font choice matches the SERIF font used on the front cover of the magazines and when I looked at
others, I noticed they use the same font every time for the word ‘ELLE’ they do this to represent their
brand, so the audience know that brand is their font and won't get mixed up with other magazine
brands.
The image size used is a perfect size and each picture shows a totally different atmosphere which I like
because the audience won't get bored when looking at the page because if the images look or have the
same sort of location the audience could think this is repetitive and get bored easily.
I chose to look into the ELLE magazine because this is a magazine which
gives me a lot of inspiration and when finding information about this its
main form of information is related to fashion and fashion shows and
looking into this magazine can give me a lot more ideas on what sort of
text I will need to included because I wouldn't want the text to be random
And not appeal to what my audience want to read.
Overall, I have learned my main forms of layout which
I will now include in my final products and finding a
lot more detail about how the inside of your
magazine should actually look therefore mine can
look more realistic and professional just like a
magazine should be.
Numbers used
which will guide
the audience to
not get confused
on which part to
read.
JADED LONDON WEBSITE
Jaded London is an urban streetwear brand loved by the likes of Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding that is set for
huge success. Founded in 2013 by sibling's duo Jade and Grant Goulden, their innovative designs and
cutting-edge trends have earned them an army of dedicated social media followers and worldwide
customers
I chose to look onto the website and see what sort of designs they have produced and to see the layout
of the website. I found that the website was easy and friendly to use which is a great start and how you
would want your audience to feel when looking on the website. The first thing I noticed was the images
used on the website these looked professional and detailed with large fonts on top of the pictures the
colour scheme for each photo matched the colour scheme to the fonts. The photos which have been
taken look creative and unique this is a main reason as to why I chose this existing product because the
editing in the images are nothing I have seen before which makes it stand out to its audience. The mise
en scene of the model's body language is also very creative with lots of angles used and close ups in
different poses. I think this is something which a streetwear audience will look for in a magazine they
want to see pictures that are good quality and not just basic because this will make them want to buy the
product even more. The layout to the website is
basic but the use of the
photos really makes the
website stand out the photos
are scattered in different
places not just all in a single
line which I like. There's also a
range of images shown not
just a few.
To expand my research with the existing products I then used
the Instagram shop link from the website which took me to their
Instagram page this is a great way of advertisement and is a
social media platform which helped them get a worldwide
audience. The detail of the images are amazing and the colour
schemes mix well with the different background locations. This
existing product links in with my pre-proposal because I chose
this brand as an inspiration towards my products because this
brand relates a lot to my brand of streetwear. I also noticed that
this brand includes a lot of promotions and collabs with
influencers and celebrities this has another link to my secondary
audience in which I talked about my audience liking
collaborations. I want to include my ‘celebrity collaboration’
inside my magazine therefore I can go into a lot of detail.
Some of the pictures used have been edited below I have two images which I found from the jaded site
The first one has a detailed gradient added which you can see close up this sort of effect
gives off an older generation back in the 1980s with the darker shadows around the
outside and the clothing saturated colours is what stands out to its audience. Whereas
the second one looks a lot more dated and reminds me of space with the silver tones in
the background therefore these images give the audience an imagination (more
meaning behind the images).
Overall, I have learned that detail to images can change the
whole aspect of a website and can also make the layout look a
lot more detailed than it actually is .I also learnt that pictures
mean a lot in a clothing brand and that’s what audience look
more into and the quality of the products. Now I can focus on
my editing with photoshop when it comes to production.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– The common features that all the existing products have is that they are all popular brands
and all very successful within the fashion industry. All of these products also use their social
media platform to advertise all their products they have or trends I found this is mainly
Instagram. Both the FASHION and ELLE magazine have a lot of similar aspects like what they
include inside their magazine which is lifestyle, beauty and fashion they also have the same
layout plans with a main image of a model who is the focus with text surrounding. They
also go for the same seasons and themes like the newest trends and the same font choices.
Whereas the other two existing products THE KRIPT and JADED LONDON are both similar
because they both have the same streetwear style and audience of younger females. They
both have the same kind of picture edits which I like and are both niche companies.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work?
– The main aspects of my research which I will include in my production work is the same
style editing which is used in the niche brands this is because this is creative and like a piece
of art and it will grab the audiences attention as it did with me. I will then include the same
layout plans which are used in the FASHION and ELLE magazines as well as the two page
spread this is because this layout is simple but effective because it isn’t too overcrowded
and I can still fit all the information on whilst having it spaced out because my audience
don’t want to be put off by having too much on the magazine.
Audience Research
STREETWEAR RESEARCH:
• Observation: I chose to look into street wear using the Fashion United.UK website as I part of my
secondary research and I wanted to see where consumers buy their street wear from,I found out
that physical stores are still the channel of choice with a 53% of people buying clothes from the
actual store. E-commerce comes in second having obtained the preference of 42% of respondents
Which means my audience will be mostly people who buy from the online shop which within my
brand the only place I will display my clothes will be on an online shop and through magazines. As
people prefer buying from the actual store because it is trustworthy and wouldn’t be worried
about scams with some websites.
• The more Instagram establishes itself as an e-commerce platform, more consumers are expected
to use it to shop street wear therefore my product will appeal to this audience because included in
my two-page spread will be social media influencer (celebrities) who talk about my clothing brand
and why they love it. They will also show how they style the clothes as many people prefer looking
through instagram and finding the latest trends and actually buying their products through
Instagram. It is said streetwear shoppers look for inspiration through social media 88% and 80% are
inspired by hip-hop and rap stars.
• I also found out that the streetwear consumers wants ‘affordable exclusivity’ as about 70% of
respondents reported having an annual income of £31,400 which then leads them to look for
hybrid of affordability and exclusivity. Although even with a low budget 54% of the
consumers are wiling to spend up to £393 on streetwear items each month. Therefore, those
with the lowest incomes are the ones willing to spend up to five times more on streetwear
items as they do for non-streetwear products. This says that my audience would risk a high
price t-shirt etc. if it is good quality a branded whereas the prices for my clothing line will be
affordable whilst still being good quality and looks more expensive than it actually is. I chose
smaller prices because this is what will grab my audience in as not everybody will spend a
ridicules amount for a piece of clothing and normally the cheaper clothing isn't up to a good
standard. However, my brand has both of these and my advertising will be professional whilst
still being an affordable price for my audience to buy.
• This also links in with why my product will appeal to this audience and as my age range is the
younger audience (who may be students) They may not want to spend as much because they
might not be receiving a high income and must balance with spending their money on
priorities. Therefore, I decide to include a ‘student discount’ added onto my affordable
clothing which makes it even more cheaper prices this is something which mostly every
student will look for a will then grab my audience's attention once they see it advertised.
• Observation: For more secondary audience research I looked into the website medium.com
which focused a lot on fashion and the different target audiences. The price of a plain white
shirt and the subsequent number of Instagram followers for a array of 16 fashion brands where
compared in price. This found out what is says about the audiences.
• FAST FASHION:
• Low prices, with there clothes costing less than £10 due to there low prices and daily churning
of hundreds of new styles.
• They have a huge mass market appeal and produce so many items that they can appeal to
nearly anyone with any style and budget.
• LUXURY COMPANIES:
• Prohibitive prices that really do alienate anyone who cannot afford their brand.
• £200 for a t-shirt.
• These prices deter their mass popularity and social following.
• NICHE COMPANIES:
• Range between £18-90
• Have between 200k and 3.5 million Instagram followers.
• They know there audience and aesthetic.
• These comparatively higher prices deter people who do not fully resonate with the brand from
engaging or purchasing.
FEMALES TARGET AUDIENCE
FASHION:
• From looking at this research and the 3 distinct groups it has
helped me to find which group my clothing brand is included in
and this is the Niche companies this is because my price range is
between the £18-90 range and I know my exact audience that I
will be producing clothes and advertisement which relate to my
female audience. I am also not trying to appeal to more than one
audience and will not be producing a range of different types of
clothing for any style this would be (fast fashion). The main style
is streetwear for women.
The biggest takeaway from the 3 distinct groups is that a general Trent line indicating that the more
expensive a brand is, the fewer followers it will have on Instagram. I also notice when looking online
at different brands that my audience prefer unique and different brands which they have never seen
before. Whereas fast fashion includes the same exact clothes for pretty little thing and boohoo etc.
and to some audiences it isn't known as a style and can get boring however my product are not to be
seen before which makes it appeal to my audience and will grab my audience in because they will
want to wear something not many people have got or seen before which then starts new trends that
will be included in my magazine.
Included in this image is the manieredevoir Instagram page which
shows that a small independent business can grow by using
Instagram as a form of advertisement. I would label this brand as
a Niche company because it includes a specific audience range
and has a repetitive style which looks like a streetwear style. I also
looked onto the website and saw similar prices which where
affordable but not too high and this is what will appeal to my
audience because my prices will be like this on my website.
• Observation: For my last bit of secondary research I looked onto the marketme.com website
which included a lot of information on how brands gain a larger audience and popularity to there
brand through social media and other advertisement's.
• ’collaboration is the name of the game’
• Whilst older generations respect the purity of brands they are not so attracted to exclusivity.
Brand collaboration's are one of the most successful things in the luxury industry today high
end brands are becoming more urban style, and they do this by collaborating with
innovators and influences. For example supreme which started as a skate shop gained quite
a cult following after collaborations with high-end fashion brands such as Nike & Louis
Vuitton. They then employed models and celebrities to promote their brand through
magazines etc. This says that my audience want to see different collaborations on social
media and tri-media systems because specific celebrities have a larger audience than a lot of
brands therefore this will result in the brand getting a larger audience. My product will
appeal to the audience who like seeing these people by including a celebrity who gets
interviewed for my magazine two page spread which I have mentioned at the beginning of
my secondary research.
TARGET AUDIENCE FOR HIGH-END
FASHION:
Supreme x Louis Vuitton
QUESTIONS I USED FOR MY SURVEY:
• What is your gender?
• What is your age?
• Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
• How would you describe your fashion style?
• What do you think the current trends are?
• Do you prefer online shopping or shopping in store?
• How do you decide what to wear?
• How important is price?
I created this using MS FORMS.
Primary Audience Research
• For my first part of the Primary Research, I conducted a survey using MS forms this was about fashion and I
chose to ask questions which mostly related to trends/styles and inspirations because I can then get ideas
for what type of clothing and people, I need to include to appeal to my audience type. As well as asking
how much they would spend on clothes so therefore I know what price range is expected, and the general
questions for some background information like age, gender etc. I also send my survey to my friends who
are interested in fashion and the same age as me this was mainly females because they are trustworthy,
and I felt I would get detailed responses. When using the website forms, I found this a simple and easy way
to conduct a survey it included options on how I wanted my audience to answer the questions which I liked
I decided to have a few multi-choice and text response so I could get a range of different responses.
However, I struggled to copy my survey link to send to people which held me back with getting as many
responses as I wanted.
• I only did manage to get 7 responses which I wasn’t happy with and I felt I needed to conduct more
primary research for my product which I did later in my research work. From the responses I noticed with
the text responses a lot of them were similar which was a benefit because I had chosen the right audience
to fill in the survey and a lot of street wear and comfy clothes related answers had came up which is the
style I want to produce for my magazine. I was happy with the question I asked, ‘do you refer shopping
online or in store’ and 6 people had put online which is another benefit because my clothing line will be
advertised through a website and is an only online store. Conducting a survey did help me to found out
about my audience in more detail and find more ideas on what I can include on my products, on the next
slides I included the results to my survey.
SURVEY RESPONSE:
Primary Audience Research
I looked back on my survey and wasn’t too happy with the number of responses I received therefore for
the next part of my primary audience research I have decided to conduct an interview mainly because I
want to find more information with more detailed questions, and I will be able to include ‘why?’ for a
longer response. For my interview I chose 6 questions like my survey questions but in a lot more detail so I
could find out more about my target audience the questions I used are below;
1.What labels do you like and why?
2.Where do you shop and why these specific shops?
3.What is important to you when it comes to fashion?
4.Who influences your style and why is this
5.Do you prefer fast fashion or niche fashion and why?
For my interview I chose to interview my sister who is at the similar age to my target audience which was a
benefit because I can get responses which will appeal to my products, she also has a passion for fashion
and knows a lot about trends and celebrities. My interview is from a female's perspective whereas my
survey was different and included one males perspective I also find it a lot easier with an interview
because I can ask questions and this interview won't be anonymous so I can go into a lot of detail for
detailed responses. For the interview I have decide to write down the response I get which I will see if this
works out well or not, I searched the internet for some fashion questions and found a lot of different ones
on websites, I only managed to put together 5 but this is a good amount because I will receive the perfect
amount of information which I need plus the survey.
For question 5 I linked this to my secondary
research which I had found (on slide 14)this
was helpful because before this I didn’t know
what different fashion companies are labeled
as so now, I can ask these question in my
interview to fid out what my audience
prefers.
INTERVIEW: ABBI CROSLAND
1. What label's do you like and why?
“Well, I like soft and comfy materials for when I lounge around which I normally wear tracksuits which has a mix of
different colours or bright colours on my clothes most of the time but sometimes bland colours are nice. The designs I
like are unique styles like cut outs, rips and tie dye this is because I love clothes that stand out and that are not like
others because this will grab my attention to that brand.”
2.Where do you shop and why these specific shops?
“I shop at PRETTYLITTLETHING and Urban Outfitters these are my favourite places to shop because they have a good
variety of colours, styles and they have the latest trends which I like to follow and keep up with. I also like them because
they have affordable prices especially Pretty little thing as they always have sales sometimes over 50 % off which the
sale section is something I like to look at first, they also include ‘student discount’ which is great for cheaper prices.”
3.What is important to you when it comes to fashion?
“Fashion is a way of self expression of my personality, and more than that fashion is a mean of self empowerment and
confidence which is important to me. I always implement fashion in my everyday life because I believe you always want
to present the best version you can to people by looking the best you can and it defines who I am, and fashion is
something which is very important to me as an individual as I love being able to express myself through colours or
fabrics, patterns etc.”
4.Who influences your style and why is this?
“My style is influenced by Celebrities, models and influencers because they have a good sense of styles and as they
have a lot of followers and big fan base that means a lot of people are wearing them clothes as they want to be like
other people and big influencers because most start new trends. I wouldn’t say I have a specific person because I prefer
to look on my social media (mainly Instagram) and look for inspiration through pictures Pinterest is also another good
app to look at.”
5.Do you prefer fast fashion or niche fashion and why?
“I would say I do prefer niche fashion because I like the designs and ideas used on the clothes, they also are much
better-quality products than fast fashion and fast fashion produces the same products whereas niche are creative and
produce products which haven’t been seen before. I also like to go for a reasonable price not too high because I know it
will be worth the price when I receive the product. However, I have shopped with fast fashion brands and sometimes I
have been disappointed when I receive the product because the product isn’t always as described.”
Primary Audience Research
• Overall, the Interview with my sister, Abbi went well and just how I wanted it to turn out she gave
detailed responses which was great because this helped me find out more information for my target
audience. I was also happy that I decided to do more than one primary audience research because my
survey didn’t justify my research as much with the low Responses. From this interview Abbi mentioned
that she preferred niche fashion over fast fashion this was an interesting question because I had found
the information beforehand in my secondary research therefore in my product, I will include a niche
brand what presents unique and high-quality products. Abbi also mentioned that celebrities and models
influence her style which shows me that to grab my audience I could include a celebrity within my
magazine and have the celebrity tell my audience the latest trends and how she styles my brand because
my audience will want to read more if they are fans of this female. Before I completed the interview, I
did decide I was going to write down the responses from the questions I asked Abbi whilst interviewing I
did soon realise this was a lot harder than I thought and was time consuming because she did have to
repeat some words and it wasn’t accurate. Therefore, halfway through the interview I decided to carry
this on by recording the interview so I could look back and type up the responses which was a lot easier.
’PRETTYLITTLETHING’ was a brand which Abbi said she shops at which also links to the same brand I
added in my initial plans which inspires me with my products which is a benefit, and I can therefore look
into this brand for more inspiration when I advertise my brand. From this interview I have found out that
my audience is young women, and I will attract this audience by including an article or interview inside
of my magazine that include photos of the model in my clothes and the celebrity talking about her style.
I want to keep my design of the magazine and website interesting by adding a lot of creative edits to the
photos which will also grab my audience's attention.
VOGUE
• VOGUE is an American monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many
topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living and runway. Based in New York City,
it began as a weekly newspaper in 1892, before becoming a monthly magazine
years later.
To appear in vogue is the top-quality label in the fashion industry for designers, models, actors, photographers
and authors. In the 1960s the magazine defined the look of female models, eschewing shapely figures
highlight thin, gender neutral physiques. I wanted to find out a bit more information on the layouts of their
magazine I found a few images below. Vogue match a lot of there colours
schemes together and I love the idea of
the last picture which looks like it has
been edited with a yellow and blue
highlight I want to try this sort of effects
in my practical research if I find
resources.
I then looked at the latest Fall Fashion
show week:
FOR LOUIS VUITTON
Ghesquiere made a runway of the Louvres Denon wing. This
was a show absolutely teaming with life even though people
were watching from a laptop screen and smartphone. He also
stated “I wanted something impactful, something that conveys
hope and joy for what's coming next and for people to have a
good time watching". For me I find fashion show week very
interesting and I like to look at the clothes because it gives me
more inspiration for my products. Therefore I spend more time
researching and watched a few fashion show clips whilst
looking at pictures.
HOW IS THE INTERNET
AFFECTING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY?
• I wanted to find out some background information with the magazine VS the internet industry because I
am producing a magazine and want my audience to chose the magazine over looking onto social media I
can learn a few new facts and also pick up skills that I can myself include in my magazine.
• The internet has changed the magazine industry in countless ways with making it more accessible and
more instant to forcing publishers to think outside of the box. With more people connected to the
internet than ever before most are getting their information directly from the web and bypassing print
altogether. As more magazines archive back issues on their website, readers benefit by being able to
search for old articles and sometimes entire editions.
• RELEVANT CONTENT- though the internet has forced print magazine to adapt their aesthetics in order to
keep readers interested, Its also made it easier for publishers to find interesting and engaging content.
Therefore when they pick up a magazine they want content that’s in depth, well-researched and
relevant.
• INCREASED QUALITY-In order to combat the lure of the web, Publishers are taking advantage of the
tactile quality of print and using ever higher quality materials in their publications.
• From these facts and searching on the internet I found out small details which
I can include in my magazine for example I should only include relevant content
That will appeal towards my target audience and keep them interested
This also needs to be related to the type of magazine I am producing.
Another focus is increased quality which is important because my
audience want a high-quality layout that includes a lot of designs
therefore, I can look at some examples online and see the different
between the internet magazines and print.
SUBJECT RESEARCH
• For my last part of my subject research I wanted to look into photoshoots and examples of them
for more inspiration and skills I can use (camera skills) I chose the well known brand
PRETTYLITTLETHING because I have made links to this in my initial plans and interview. I already
know a few facts about PLT so I focused on the photoshoot examples I could find.
When I was searching for photoshoot examples and images, I noticed
this brand Collab's a lot with either celebrities or influencers which is
seen a lot on their social media of people promoting their brand.
Which is a great way to get their brand out there especially using well
known people who will grab audiences in of those celebs. The
locations they use for their photoshoots and mainly for their Videos
are worldwide e.g. Paris is shown in the Little Mix poster. Whereas
most of their photoshoots which are posted on the website are taken
in a studio with a plain white background (another example shown in
the pictures).
I wanted to look more into the website of PLT and I found ‘blogger
post’ which included lots of different posts I cam across ‘ seen on PLT
influencers’ this was a great page to look for inspiration and find your
favourite influencers wearing this brand they also had a simple layout
with a lot of images and not as much text which was also a lot more
effective for its audience. This is because images are more interesting
than a lot of text.
Practical Research
PRACTICAL RESEARCH:
For my first practical research I focused on editing pictures and inserting text
using the tools this was a quick recap experiment for me because I haven't
changed the saturation etc. of my pictures. For this I began by opening
Photoshop I also took some screenshots as I went through for process
outcomes, I then used safari to find a ‘holiday’ picture that I could use for the
background. I chose one that included palm trees this was because I wanted
to ty the duplicate tool later on, I chose the blending options tool and began
by changing the exposures and brightness I made the image loo a lot brighter.
I also focused on one colour which was the light blue I chose this because it
links the the colour of both the sky and sea. One I got the ashy, light look I
decided to duplicate the palm trees (I ended up with 4) I placed these the
front of the picture as shown. I have never used the duplicate tool because I
didn't realise the meaning behind it, but I found out this is an easy and quicker
alternative which I can now use.
I then added a simple font and called it ‘summer’ and added
this in front of my background this turned out to look like a
simple poster. I am happy with this outcome because it was a
simple starter for my practical research and helped me
remember a lot of the tools and how they work. This will now
help me when I create my final product because I can change
the contrast and colours when I take my photos to brighten
them up and grab my audience's attention and focus on a
colour scheme which appears to them. I can also now
duplicate my photos of the clothing brand and models to look
a lot more creative and interesting.
SHADOW TECHNIQUE:
After completing my first practical research I decided I wanted
to focus more on the shadow and duplicate tool whilst still using
Photoshop. I used safari and found an image of a model and
used this with others which were clothes I then duplicated each
one and used the magic tool to erase the white backgrounds. I
did also have to use the lasso tool for smaller areas which were
harder to reach so far, most things were going well except
getting rid of the white background areas I did struggle with this
because when using the lasso tool, it isn't a straight line and
makes my outcome looking messy. I went back and zoomed in I
tried to get the best smooth outcome I eventually did this and
then moved onto the shadowing part. I only moved them
slightly across because I wanted it to look like a realistic shadow,
once I had done this for all three of the images, I began to create
the ‘shadow’.
• For this I used the blending options
tool and found the opacity tools I
used this to create the faded look,
but I still wanted them to be
noticeable because this looks a lot
more creative.
• After this I placed them all together
and added a warm yellow colour for
the background to make it look more
effective.
Overall, this experiment will help with my final product
because this type of editing is what I want to include for my
pictures therefore I will now have a much better
understanding of how I need to produce this for it to work
well. I can also look back on this for ideas and help if I get
stuck. This style of edit also links in with my existing product
(the kript) which is an inspiration to my product.
WIX.COM
• I continued on with my experiments and decided I wanted to not just look
into making a template of a website but two so then I can compare which
website I preferred and will use for my final product. The first website I
looked into was wix.com I have used this website before, but I noticed it
can be a bit confusing in certain areas of how to get images etc. As this is
only experiments, I used a home décor template and then decided to
focus on the main area as ‘food’ I used the internet to find some images
which related to this and imported them on the website. I changed a lot
of the text relating it to my theme and changed my background to a
marble theme whilst I was doing this, I had a weakness of my layout the
layout did keep messing up and pictures would become larger or smaller,
so this become very time consuming, and I had to re -download images.
However, that was my only weakness as everything else worked perfectly
and I had managed to use the help arrows around which abled me to find
all the types of layouts and fonts. I also like that this website included
layouts for all different types of themes, so it made it a lot easier than
starting form scratch.
• Lastly, this experiment will help with my final product because I now have
an idea of how to actually use wix and with more practice this will make it
simpler for me and I won't be confused when it comes to creating a
website. It will also help with layout ideas because this app has a variety
of styles which I can chose and colour schemes to match they also have
different effects you can add onto your website which I tried out.
SQUARESPACE.COM
• I then moved onto the last website I was looking at and
I chose squarespace.com this is a website that I had
never heard of before, so it is good to get some new
experiences with other apps. I decided to switch this
one up and focus on ‘home décor’ I began by choosing a
template (they also had a variety) and I managed to find
a home themed one. This was sort of the same process
as the wix one I added pictures and changed fonts I only
wanted to create simple websites so then I can go to
the full extend for my final website. I felt that this one
had a lot more modern and classy layouts than wix did
although this one doesn't really give out much help so
once I chose my template, I struggled to find the edit
button to start changing it up. I didn't feel like there was
much choice with colours and fonts as wix had a variety
for me to pick from.
• Overall, from this experience of trying out both website
I prefer wix this is mainly because I know this website
and I have previously used it, so I do have the hang of it.
• It also gave me a lot more templates, stickers, fonts so
this would be a better website to use to make sure I can
get not just a few but a range of these to match my
theme.
FILTER TECHNIQUES:
• For my last bit of experiments, I wanted to have a go at adding filters and effects onto an image I did
manage to try two different images which were a beach theme and a home décor one. I decided to try
out two different apps for each photo to see the outcomes and if they were different so for the beach
one, I chose Photoshop and for the home one I chose Fotojet. I did really struggle with finding apps
that create a retro and old look to them, so I had to use an app I had found. I didn't really like the
outcome of the beach one because it wasn’t the sort of colours and effects I wanted to achieve
however I did use a lot of the blending and editing tools I also focused a lot with a purple colour to see
if I could create a shadow look. I added a lot of gradient because that is a tool, I do want to add into my
final pictures however the outcome wasn’t as good as I expected. Therefore, I decided to try out the
fotojet app which I have never used before most of the filters were premium which I couldn't used but I
managed to change some of the exposure and add a ‘polaroid effect’ which I did love because this links
towards my planning as I mentioned I wanted a polaroid look included with some of my pictures. This
experiment did help a lot because I managed to find a few different apps which I can use when working
from home and now I know the tools which will create colour effects however I will still look into some
tutorials to try get the ‘80s’ look and try those out when it comes to my production.

  • 2. For my first existing product I chose a ‘fashion’ magazine brand this brand publishes 10 issues a year and has a total readership of 1.85 million which is a popular magazine. Fashion is a sophisticated brand that inspires and empowers fashion and beauty lovers and to be their best selves. The target audience is aimed at young women in which my brand is aimed at this similar audience which is a reasons as to why I chose this one to explore. The shot used is a medium shot which is placed at the center of the magazine this shows the audience will see her as the main focus when looking at the magazine. This is also shown as the model is place in front of the masthead which also reveals her importance and that they want the model to grab the audience's attention and buy the magazine. They have featured a celebrity ‘Hailee Stein Feld’ this is a good way to grab the audience's attention because fans of this celebrity will want to buy this magazine as she is featured on the front cover. I have learnt that this is a good way of advertising because audiences like to wear what their favourite celebrities wear and keep up with those trends. Therefore, I will include a celebrity within my products and the celebrity will talk about my clothing line this will advertise my brand because people are more likely to buy clothing that celebrities also wear. The dress codes she is wearing is a black dress with colorful patches scattered on her dress the use of ‘glitter bomb’ & ‘party’ etc. shows what type of occasion this dress is for which is a good idea by having small words which reveal a lot will give of hints towards the audience and I will include this on my magazine cover because some people prefer less text and more images as a younger audience will get bored more easily if they read a lot of text. FASHION MAGAZINE
  • 3. • The image background has no location used and is a plain darkish blue colour and includes another main colour a light pastel pink these colours both mix together well, and I like the idea of using two main colours that makes the magazine look a lot more professional and stand out towards the audience. This is something I have learnt to include when I create my products and the colours used are feminine which also reveal the audience target to this magazine which is female. The mise en scene of the models body language looks as if she is posing for the camera as her eyes are looking directly into the camera this is something which will grab the audience and the way she is posing relates towards the ‘party dress’ as if she is dancing. I also like this idea because everything in the magazine cover almost relates towards the meaning of the magazine which makes it easier for the audience to understand I will also plan to include this within my magazine cover. • A reason I chose this magazine brand is because this magazine is not too cluttered and includes only main aspects which are needed in a magazine this is something I look for when looking into magazines because people will prefer magazines which look easy to read and understand because of this I decided to look more into the magazine which were by ‘fashion’ from this I found that a lot of these magazines include a simplistic layout as shown here. This magazine will give me a lot of inspiration for my own magazine because I can look into the layout ideas and see patterns in their magazines therefore, I can create my own layouts with ideas from these fashion covers. The photography used on the magazine covers really make the magazine look more professional and this inspires me to create photos with good angles and good quality. I also like how basic but effective the photos look with not much gong on in the backgrounds I can look more into this when I do more research.
  • 4. THE KRIPT WEBSITE For my next existing product, I explored ‘THE KRIPT’ website this is an online clothing store with the latest fashions and the current trends at an affordable price this brand was actually a ‘Facebook store’ concept and ‘Instagram’ profile before developing more. This website is one of my favourite websites in which I have looked into because there is so much detail especially with the photography used and editing to the photos. These photos aren't just basic photos which is a reason as to why I chose to look into this because in the images above they focus a lot on multiplying the models which makes the photo look more creative. The fonts match well with the website as a whole because there basic colours with large capital fonts this is a basic touch but very effective because it doesn’t take over the photos and this will grab the audience's attention. Whereas plain images used to advertise clothes is basic and wouldn’t catch their attention as much, this is a different way of advertisement. The different icons at the top of the magazine are clear and not overcrowded I like this idea because different audiences might struggle to used the website as this one is easy and friendly which is a positive. Plain background colours with pops of colour from the clothing this is effective and makes the clothes stand out on the model. I have learnt they have Social media handles included on the website to reach a larger audience
  • 5. • I noticed a lot of different angles are used with the photography not just sticking to one this has inspired me to think of creative angles I can use for my model's mise en scene of body language because the more angles used will make my audience happy to see every angle in the clothes. This is something I can add into my planning and try out. This has also helped me to plan one of my experiments which will involve using Photoshop I can use photos and put together edits (like the ones on the kript website) included with the models. I can then use Photoshop to edit together and multiply the images and use a plain background to add in. I looked more into the website and came across the ‘shop Insagram’ page this is another effective way of advertisement because the audience will look into there Instagram account and follow onto the website which social media is a great form of advertisement to reach every audience. The image on the right was a photo I saw which also inspired me a lot this is because the image include 3 different pictures of the same model which an edited shadow placed behind the model. I think this is different and I love this and want to include pictures like this on the front of my website as it looks more professional and will make my website layout look less basic. From looking on the website I gathered that this clothing brand appeals towards a similar audience as my brand around 16-26 through female models used and the type of clothing advertised.
  • 6. ELLE MAGAZINE Elle is a worldwide lifestyle magazine that focuses on fashion, beauty, health and entertainment. It was founded in Paris and first sold as a supplement to France Soir. This is the next existing product I have chosen because I do actually have some of these magazines and read them from time to time it includes a lot of fashion and helps you find out more about fashion in general. The target audience for ELLE is women aged between 18 and 49 its readers have a median age of 34.7. The shot used is a medium close up of the model who is known as (Bella Hadid) who is placed in the center of the shop looking directly at the camera. This is a good technique and a good shot choice because making eye contact with the camera can grab the audience's attention when looking at the magazine. This model is actually a celebrity which straight away will grab an audience's attention if they are a fan of this celebrity especially as they have included her name at the side of the magazine. I also noticed the silver choice of colour schemes with the white and black this blends well together and the colours don’t clash therefore it makes the magazine look a lot more professional. The fonts choice is SERIF font which is my favourite font to use because it is large but doesn't look too heavy on the magazine these fonts are also spaced-out letter by letter which I like, and I could try this with my magazine. The layout plan to this magazine is a large image which is also in front of the masthead which shows the models importance. With fonts surrounding the image this has helped me to figure out my layout plan because I like how the layout doesn't look too full and crowded. The mise en scene of her facial expression look serious and doesn't show much emotions this could link to the fact most models ‘pose’ with a serious face and I also like the idea of this it will make the audience question and want to read more because it doesn't give much away.
  • 7. I decided to explore more into the ELLE magazines and look inside them I found 2 two page spread images and notice that they both had the same layout plan which was text that had been put into paragraphs and split around the pages and then they included photos around each text. Which looks like a really good plan because audiences like to have more photos than text when looking in a magazine and the ELLE one includes an equal amount of both on each page. If the audience see the pages, it will grab their attention because the images actually explain the meaning of the text, so they aren't just random pictures which have been place on the magazine. They also include a pastel colour scheme of a light pink with white and black this also mixes well together and the colours appeal well to there female audience. The font choice matches the SERIF font used on the front cover of the magazines and when I looked at others, I noticed they use the same font every time for the word ‘ELLE’ they do this to represent their brand, so the audience know that brand is their font and won't get mixed up with other magazine brands. The image size used is a perfect size and each picture shows a totally different atmosphere which I like because the audience won't get bored when looking at the page because if the images look or have the same sort of location the audience could think this is repetitive and get bored easily. I chose to look into the ELLE magazine because this is a magazine which gives me a lot of inspiration and when finding information about this its main form of information is related to fashion and fashion shows and looking into this magazine can give me a lot more ideas on what sort of text I will need to included because I wouldn't want the text to be random And not appeal to what my audience want to read. Overall, I have learned my main forms of layout which I will now include in my final products and finding a lot more detail about how the inside of your magazine should actually look therefore mine can look more realistic and professional just like a magazine should be. Numbers used which will guide the audience to not get confused on which part to read.
  • 8. JADED LONDON WEBSITE Jaded London is an urban streetwear brand loved by the likes of Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding that is set for huge success. Founded in 2013 by sibling's duo Jade and Grant Goulden, their innovative designs and cutting-edge trends have earned them an army of dedicated social media followers and worldwide customers I chose to look onto the website and see what sort of designs they have produced and to see the layout of the website. I found that the website was easy and friendly to use which is a great start and how you would want your audience to feel when looking on the website. The first thing I noticed was the images used on the website these looked professional and detailed with large fonts on top of the pictures the colour scheme for each photo matched the colour scheme to the fonts. The photos which have been taken look creative and unique this is a main reason as to why I chose this existing product because the editing in the images are nothing I have seen before which makes it stand out to its audience. The mise en scene of the model's body language is also very creative with lots of angles used and close ups in different poses. I think this is something which a streetwear audience will look for in a magazine they want to see pictures that are good quality and not just basic because this will make them want to buy the product even more. The layout to the website is basic but the use of the photos really makes the website stand out the photos are scattered in different places not just all in a single line which I like. There's also a range of images shown not just a few.
  • 9. To expand my research with the existing products I then used the Instagram shop link from the website which took me to their Instagram page this is a great way of advertisement and is a social media platform which helped them get a worldwide audience. The detail of the images are amazing and the colour schemes mix well with the different background locations. This existing product links in with my pre-proposal because I chose this brand as an inspiration towards my products because this brand relates a lot to my brand of streetwear. I also noticed that this brand includes a lot of promotions and collabs with influencers and celebrities this has another link to my secondary audience in which I talked about my audience liking collaborations. I want to include my ‘celebrity collaboration’ inside my magazine therefore I can go into a lot of detail. Some of the pictures used have been edited below I have two images which I found from the jaded site The first one has a detailed gradient added which you can see close up this sort of effect gives off an older generation back in the 1980s with the darker shadows around the outside and the clothing saturated colours is what stands out to its audience. Whereas the second one looks a lot more dated and reminds me of space with the silver tones in the background therefore these images give the audience an imagination (more meaning behind the images). Overall, I have learned that detail to images can change the whole aspect of a website and can also make the layout look a lot more detailed than it actually is .I also learnt that pictures mean a lot in a clothing brand and that’s what audience look more into and the quality of the products. Now I can focus on my editing with photoshop when it comes to production.
  • 10. Research Analysis • What common features do the researched products have? – The common features that all the existing products have is that they are all popular brands and all very successful within the fashion industry. All of these products also use their social media platform to advertise all their products they have or trends I found this is mainly Instagram. Both the FASHION and ELLE magazine have a lot of similar aspects like what they include inside their magazine which is lifestyle, beauty and fashion they also have the same layout plans with a main image of a model who is the focus with text surrounding. They also go for the same seasons and themes like the newest trends and the same font choices. Whereas the other two existing products THE KRIPT and JADED LONDON are both similar because they both have the same streetwear style and audience of younger females. They both have the same kind of picture edits which I like and are both niche companies. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work? – The main aspects of my research which I will include in my production work is the same style editing which is used in the niche brands this is because this is creative and like a piece of art and it will grab the audiences attention as it did with me. I will then include the same layout plans which are used in the FASHION and ELLE magazines as well as the two page spread this is because this layout is simple but effective because it isn’t too overcrowded and I can still fit all the information on whilst having it spaced out because my audience don’t want to be put off by having too much on the magazine.
  • 12. STREETWEAR RESEARCH: • Observation: I chose to look into street wear using the Fashion United.UK website as I part of my secondary research and I wanted to see where consumers buy their street wear from,I found out that physical stores are still the channel of choice with a 53% of people buying clothes from the actual store. E-commerce comes in second having obtained the preference of 42% of respondents Which means my audience will be mostly people who buy from the online shop which within my brand the only place I will display my clothes will be on an online shop and through magazines. As people prefer buying from the actual store because it is trustworthy and wouldn’t be worried about scams with some websites. • The more Instagram establishes itself as an e-commerce platform, more consumers are expected to use it to shop street wear therefore my product will appeal to this audience because included in my two-page spread will be social media influencer (celebrities) who talk about my clothing brand and why they love it. They will also show how they style the clothes as many people prefer looking through instagram and finding the latest trends and actually buying their products through Instagram. It is said streetwear shoppers look for inspiration through social media 88% and 80% are inspired by hip-hop and rap stars.
  • 13. • I also found out that the streetwear consumers wants ‘affordable exclusivity’ as about 70% of respondents reported having an annual income of £31,400 which then leads them to look for hybrid of affordability and exclusivity. Although even with a low budget 54% of the consumers are wiling to spend up to £393 on streetwear items each month. Therefore, those with the lowest incomes are the ones willing to spend up to five times more on streetwear items as they do for non-streetwear products. This says that my audience would risk a high price t-shirt etc. if it is good quality a branded whereas the prices for my clothing line will be affordable whilst still being good quality and looks more expensive than it actually is. I chose smaller prices because this is what will grab my audience in as not everybody will spend a ridicules amount for a piece of clothing and normally the cheaper clothing isn't up to a good standard. However, my brand has both of these and my advertising will be professional whilst still being an affordable price for my audience to buy. • This also links in with why my product will appeal to this audience and as my age range is the younger audience (who may be students) They may not want to spend as much because they might not be receiving a high income and must balance with spending their money on priorities. Therefore, I decide to include a ‘student discount’ added onto my affordable clothing which makes it even more cheaper prices this is something which mostly every student will look for a will then grab my audience's attention once they see it advertised.
  • 14. • Observation: For more secondary audience research I looked into the website medium.com which focused a lot on fashion and the different target audiences. The price of a plain white shirt and the subsequent number of Instagram followers for a array of 16 fashion brands where compared in price. This found out what is says about the audiences. • FAST FASHION: • Low prices, with there clothes costing less than £10 due to there low prices and daily churning of hundreds of new styles. • They have a huge mass market appeal and produce so many items that they can appeal to nearly anyone with any style and budget. • LUXURY COMPANIES: • Prohibitive prices that really do alienate anyone who cannot afford their brand. • £200 for a t-shirt. • These prices deter their mass popularity and social following. • NICHE COMPANIES: • Range between £18-90 • Have between 200k and 3.5 million Instagram followers. • They know there audience and aesthetic. • These comparatively higher prices deter people who do not fully resonate with the brand from engaging or purchasing. FEMALES TARGET AUDIENCE FASHION:
  • 15. • From looking at this research and the 3 distinct groups it has helped me to find which group my clothing brand is included in and this is the Niche companies this is because my price range is between the £18-90 range and I know my exact audience that I will be producing clothes and advertisement which relate to my female audience. I am also not trying to appeal to more than one audience and will not be producing a range of different types of clothing for any style this would be (fast fashion). The main style is streetwear for women. The biggest takeaway from the 3 distinct groups is that a general Trent line indicating that the more expensive a brand is, the fewer followers it will have on Instagram. I also notice when looking online at different brands that my audience prefer unique and different brands which they have never seen before. Whereas fast fashion includes the same exact clothes for pretty little thing and boohoo etc. and to some audiences it isn't known as a style and can get boring however my product are not to be seen before which makes it appeal to my audience and will grab my audience in because they will want to wear something not many people have got or seen before which then starts new trends that will be included in my magazine. Included in this image is the manieredevoir Instagram page which shows that a small independent business can grow by using Instagram as a form of advertisement. I would label this brand as a Niche company because it includes a specific audience range and has a repetitive style which looks like a streetwear style. I also looked onto the website and saw similar prices which where affordable but not too high and this is what will appeal to my audience because my prices will be like this on my website.
  • 16. • Observation: For my last bit of secondary research I looked onto the marketme.com website which included a lot of information on how brands gain a larger audience and popularity to there brand through social media and other advertisement's. • ’collaboration is the name of the game’ • Whilst older generations respect the purity of brands they are not so attracted to exclusivity. Brand collaboration's are one of the most successful things in the luxury industry today high end brands are becoming more urban style, and they do this by collaborating with innovators and influences. For example supreme which started as a skate shop gained quite a cult following after collaborations with high-end fashion brands such as Nike & Louis Vuitton. They then employed models and celebrities to promote their brand through magazines etc. This says that my audience want to see different collaborations on social media and tri-media systems because specific celebrities have a larger audience than a lot of brands therefore this will result in the brand getting a larger audience. My product will appeal to the audience who like seeing these people by including a celebrity who gets interviewed for my magazine two page spread which I have mentioned at the beginning of my secondary research. TARGET AUDIENCE FOR HIGH-END FASHION: Supreme x Louis Vuitton
  • 17. QUESTIONS I USED FOR MY SURVEY: • What is your gender? • What is your age? • Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? • How would you describe your fashion style? • What do you think the current trends are? • Do you prefer online shopping or shopping in store? • How do you decide what to wear? • How important is price? I created this using MS FORMS.
  • 18. Primary Audience Research • For my first part of the Primary Research, I conducted a survey using MS forms this was about fashion and I chose to ask questions which mostly related to trends/styles and inspirations because I can then get ideas for what type of clothing and people, I need to include to appeal to my audience type. As well as asking how much they would spend on clothes so therefore I know what price range is expected, and the general questions for some background information like age, gender etc. I also send my survey to my friends who are interested in fashion and the same age as me this was mainly females because they are trustworthy, and I felt I would get detailed responses. When using the website forms, I found this a simple and easy way to conduct a survey it included options on how I wanted my audience to answer the questions which I liked I decided to have a few multi-choice and text response so I could get a range of different responses. However, I struggled to copy my survey link to send to people which held me back with getting as many responses as I wanted. • I only did manage to get 7 responses which I wasn’t happy with and I felt I needed to conduct more primary research for my product which I did later in my research work. From the responses I noticed with the text responses a lot of them were similar which was a benefit because I had chosen the right audience to fill in the survey and a lot of street wear and comfy clothes related answers had came up which is the style I want to produce for my magazine. I was happy with the question I asked, ‘do you refer shopping online or in store’ and 6 people had put online which is another benefit because my clothing line will be advertised through a website and is an only online store. Conducting a survey did help me to found out about my audience in more detail and find more ideas on what I can include on my products, on the next slides I included the results to my survey.

  • 23. Primary Audience Research I looked back on my survey and wasn’t too happy with the number of responses I received therefore for the next part of my primary audience research I have decided to conduct an interview mainly because I want to find more information with more detailed questions, and I will be able to include ‘why?’ for a longer response. For my interview I chose 6 questions like my survey questions but in a lot more detail so I could find out more about my target audience the questions I used are below; 1.What labels do you like and why? 2.Where do you shop and why these specific shops? 3.What is important to you when it comes to fashion? 4.Who influences your style and why is this 5.Do you prefer fast fashion or niche fashion and why? For my interview I chose to interview my sister who is at the similar age to my target audience which was a benefit because I can get responses which will appeal to my products, she also has a passion for fashion and knows a lot about trends and celebrities. My interview is from a female's perspective whereas my survey was different and included one males perspective I also find it a lot easier with an interview because I can ask questions and this interview won't be anonymous so I can go into a lot of detail for detailed responses. For the interview I have decide to write down the response I get which I will see if this works out well or not, I searched the internet for some fashion questions and found a lot of different ones on websites, I only managed to put together 5 but this is a good amount because I will receive the perfect amount of information which I need plus the survey. For question 5 I linked this to my secondary research which I had found (on slide 14)this was helpful because before this I didn’t know what different fashion companies are labeled as so now, I can ask these question in my interview to fid out what my audience prefers.
  • 24. INTERVIEW: ABBI CROSLAND 1. What label's do you like and why? “Well, I like soft and comfy materials for when I lounge around which I normally wear tracksuits which has a mix of different colours or bright colours on my clothes most of the time but sometimes bland colours are nice. The designs I like are unique styles like cut outs, rips and tie dye this is because I love clothes that stand out and that are not like others because this will grab my attention to that brand.” 2.Where do you shop and why these specific shops? “I shop at PRETTYLITTLETHING and Urban Outfitters these are my favourite places to shop because they have a good variety of colours, styles and they have the latest trends which I like to follow and keep up with. I also like them because they have affordable prices especially Pretty little thing as they always have sales sometimes over 50 % off which the sale section is something I like to look at first, they also include ‘student discount’ which is great for cheaper prices.” 3.What is important to you when it comes to fashion? “Fashion is a way of self expression of my personality, and more than that fashion is a mean of self empowerment and confidence which is important to me. I always implement fashion in my everyday life because I believe you always want to present the best version you can to people by looking the best you can and it defines who I am, and fashion is something which is very important to me as an individual as I love being able to express myself through colours or fabrics, patterns etc.” 4.Who influences your style and why is this? “My style is influenced by Celebrities, models and influencers because they have a good sense of styles and as they have a lot of followers and big fan base that means a lot of people are wearing them clothes as they want to be like other people and big influencers because most start new trends. I wouldn’t say I have a specific person because I prefer to look on my social media (mainly Instagram) and look for inspiration through pictures Pinterest is also another good app to look at.” 5.Do you prefer fast fashion or niche fashion and why? “I would say I do prefer niche fashion because I like the designs and ideas used on the clothes, they also are much better-quality products than fast fashion and fast fashion produces the same products whereas niche are creative and produce products which haven’t been seen before. I also like to go for a reasonable price not too high because I know it will be worth the price when I receive the product. However, I have shopped with fast fashion brands and sometimes I have been disappointed when I receive the product because the product isn’t always as described.”
  • 25. Primary Audience Research • Overall, the Interview with my sister, Abbi went well and just how I wanted it to turn out she gave detailed responses which was great because this helped me find out more information for my target audience. I was also happy that I decided to do more than one primary audience research because my survey didn’t justify my research as much with the low Responses. From this interview Abbi mentioned that she preferred niche fashion over fast fashion this was an interesting question because I had found the information beforehand in my secondary research therefore in my product, I will include a niche brand what presents unique and high-quality products. Abbi also mentioned that celebrities and models influence her style which shows me that to grab my audience I could include a celebrity within my magazine and have the celebrity tell my audience the latest trends and how she styles my brand because my audience will want to read more if they are fans of this female. Before I completed the interview, I did decide I was going to write down the responses from the questions I asked Abbi whilst interviewing I did soon realise this was a lot harder than I thought and was time consuming because she did have to repeat some words and it wasn’t accurate. Therefore, halfway through the interview I decided to carry this on by recording the interview so I could look back and type up the responses which was a lot easier. ’PRETTYLITTLETHING’ was a brand which Abbi said she shops at which also links to the same brand I added in my initial plans which inspires me with my products which is a benefit, and I can therefore look into this brand for more inspiration when I advertise my brand. From this interview I have found out that my audience is young women, and I will attract this audience by including an article or interview inside of my magazine that include photos of the model in my clothes and the celebrity talking about her style. I want to keep my design of the magazine and website interesting by adding a lot of creative edits to the photos which will also grab my audience's attention.
  • 26. VOGUE • VOGUE is an American monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living and runway. Based in New York City, it began as a weekly newspaper in 1892, before becoming a monthly magazine years later. To appear in vogue is the top-quality label in the fashion industry for designers, models, actors, photographers and authors. In the 1960s the magazine defined the look of female models, eschewing shapely figures highlight thin, gender neutral physiques. I wanted to find out a bit more information on the layouts of their magazine I found a few images below. Vogue match a lot of there colours schemes together and I love the idea of the last picture which looks like it has been edited with a yellow and blue highlight I want to try this sort of effects in my practical research if I find resources. I then looked at the latest Fall Fashion show week: FOR LOUIS VUITTON Ghesquiere made a runway of the Louvres Denon wing. This was a show absolutely teaming with life even though people were watching from a laptop screen and smartphone. He also stated “I wanted something impactful, something that conveys hope and joy for what's coming next and for people to have a good time watching". For me I find fashion show week very interesting and I like to look at the clothes because it gives me more inspiration for my products. Therefore I spend more time researching and watched a few fashion show clips whilst looking at pictures.
  • 27. HOW IS THE INTERNET AFFECTING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY? • I wanted to find out some background information with the magazine VS the internet industry because I am producing a magazine and want my audience to chose the magazine over looking onto social media I can learn a few new facts and also pick up skills that I can myself include in my magazine. • The internet has changed the magazine industry in countless ways with making it more accessible and more instant to forcing publishers to think outside of the box. With more people connected to the internet than ever before most are getting their information directly from the web and bypassing print altogether. As more magazines archive back issues on their website, readers benefit by being able to search for old articles and sometimes entire editions. • RELEVANT CONTENT- though the internet has forced print magazine to adapt their aesthetics in order to keep readers interested, Its also made it easier for publishers to find interesting and engaging content. Therefore when they pick up a magazine they want content that’s in depth, well-researched and relevant. • INCREASED QUALITY-In order to combat the lure of the web, Publishers are taking advantage of the tactile quality of print and using ever higher quality materials in their publications. • From these facts and searching on the internet I found out small details which I can include in my magazine for example I should only include relevant content That will appeal towards my target audience and keep them interested This also needs to be related to the type of magazine I am producing. Another focus is increased quality which is important because my audience want a high-quality layout that includes a lot of designs therefore, I can look at some examples online and see the different between the internet magazines and print.
  • 28. SUBJECT RESEARCH • For my last part of my subject research I wanted to look into photoshoots and examples of them for more inspiration and skills I can use (camera skills) I chose the well known brand PRETTYLITTLETHING because I have made links to this in my initial plans and interview. I already know a few facts about PLT so I focused on the photoshoot examples I could find. When I was searching for photoshoot examples and images, I noticed this brand Collab's a lot with either celebrities or influencers which is seen a lot on their social media of people promoting their brand. Which is a great way to get their brand out there especially using well known people who will grab audiences in of those celebs. The locations they use for their photoshoots and mainly for their Videos are worldwide e.g. Paris is shown in the Little Mix poster. Whereas most of their photoshoots which are posted on the website are taken in a studio with a plain white background (another example shown in the pictures). I wanted to look more into the website of PLT and I found ‘blogger post’ which included lots of different posts I cam across ‘ seen on PLT influencers’ this was a great page to look for inspiration and find your favourite influencers wearing this brand they also had a simple layout with a lot of images and not as much text which was also a lot more effective for its audience. This is because images are more interesting than a lot of text.
  • 30. PRACTICAL RESEARCH: For my first practical research I focused on editing pictures and inserting text using the tools this was a quick recap experiment for me because I haven't changed the saturation etc. of my pictures. For this I began by opening Photoshop I also took some screenshots as I went through for process outcomes, I then used safari to find a ‘holiday’ picture that I could use for the background. I chose one that included palm trees this was because I wanted to ty the duplicate tool later on, I chose the blending options tool and began by changing the exposures and brightness I made the image loo a lot brighter. I also focused on one colour which was the light blue I chose this because it links the the colour of both the sky and sea. One I got the ashy, light look I decided to duplicate the palm trees (I ended up with 4) I placed these the front of the picture as shown. I have never used the duplicate tool because I didn't realise the meaning behind it, but I found out this is an easy and quicker alternative which I can now use. I then added a simple font and called it ‘summer’ and added this in front of my background this turned out to look like a simple poster. I am happy with this outcome because it was a simple starter for my practical research and helped me remember a lot of the tools and how they work. This will now help me when I create my final product because I can change the contrast and colours when I take my photos to brighten them up and grab my audience's attention and focus on a colour scheme which appears to them. I can also now duplicate my photos of the clothing brand and models to look a lot more creative and interesting.
  • 31. SHADOW TECHNIQUE: After completing my first practical research I decided I wanted to focus more on the shadow and duplicate tool whilst still using Photoshop. I used safari and found an image of a model and used this with others which were clothes I then duplicated each one and used the magic tool to erase the white backgrounds. I did also have to use the lasso tool for smaller areas which were harder to reach so far, most things were going well except getting rid of the white background areas I did struggle with this because when using the lasso tool, it isn't a straight line and makes my outcome looking messy. I went back and zoomed in I tried to get the best smooth outcome I eventually did this and then moved onto the shadowing part. I only moved them slightly across because I wanted it to look like a realistic shadow, once I had done this for all three of the images, I began to create the ‘shadow’. • For this I used the blending options tool and found the opacity tools I used this to create the faded look, but I still wanted them to be noticeable because this looks a lot more creative. • After this I placed them all together and added a warm yellow colour for the background to make it look more effective. Overall, this experiment will help with my final product because this type of editing is what I want to include for my pictures therefore I will now have a much better understanding of how I need to produce this for it to work well. I can also look back on this for ideas and help if I get stuck. This style of edit also links in with my existing product (the kript) which is an inspiration to my product.
  • 32. WIX.COM • I continued on with my experiments and decided I wanted to not just look into making a template of a website but two so then I can compare which website I preferred and will use for my final product. The first website I looked into was wix.com I have used this website before, but I noticed it can be a bit confusing in certain areas of how to get images etc. As this is only experiments, I used a home décor template and then decided to focus on the main area as ‘food’ I used the internet to find some images which related to this and imported them on the website. I changed a lot of the text relating it to my theme and changed my background to a marble theme whilst I was doing this, I had a weakness of my layout the layout did keep messing up and pictures would become larger or smaller, so this become very time consuming, and I had to re -download images. However, that was my only weakness as everything else worked perfectly and I had managed to use the help arrows around which abled me to find all the types of layouts and fonts. I also like that this website included layouts for all different types of themes, so it made it a lot easier than starting form scratch. • Lastly, this experiment will help with my final product because I now have an idea of how to actually use wix and with more practice this will make it simpler for me and I won't be confused when it comes to creating a website. It will also help with layout ideas because this app has a variety of styles which I can chose and colour schemes to match they also have different effects you can add onto your website which I tried out.
  • 33. SQUARESPACE.COM • I then moved onto the last website I was looking at and I chose squarespace.com this is a website that I had never heard of before, so it is good to get some new experiences with other apps. I decided to switch this one up and focus on ‘home décor’ I began by choosing a template (they also had a variety) and I managed to find a home themed one. This was sort of the same process as the wix one I added pictures and changed fonts I only wanted to create simple websites so then I can go to the full extend for my final website. I felt that this one had a lot more modern and classy layouts than wix did although this one doesn't really give out much help so once I chose my template, I struggled to find the edit button to start changing it up. I didn't feel like there was much choice with colours and fonts as wix had a variety for me to pick from. • Overall, from this experience of trying out both website I prefer wix this is mainly because I know this website and I have previously used it, so I do have the hang of it. • It also gave me a lot more templates, stickers, fonts so this would be a better website to use to make sure I can get not just a few but a range of these to match my theme.
  • 34. FILTER TECHNIQUES: • For my last bit of experiments, I wanted to have a go at adding filters and effects onto an image I did manage to try two different images which were a beach theme and a home décor one. I decided to try out two different apps for each photo to see the outcomes and if they were different so for the beach one, I chose Photoshop and for the home one I chose Fotojet. I did really struggle with finding apps that create a retro and old look to them, so I had to use an app I had found. I didn't really like the outcome of the beach one because it wasn’t the sort of colours and effects I wanted to achieve however I did use a lot of the blending and editing tools I also focused a lot with a purple colour to see if I could create a shadow look. I added a lot of gradient because that is a tool, I do want to add into my final pictures however the outcome wasn’t as good as I expected. Therefore, I decided to try out the fotojet app which I have never used before most of the filters were premium which I couldn't used but I managed to change some of the exposure and add a ‘polaroid effect’ which I did love because this links towards my planning as I mentioned I wanted a polaroid look included with some of my pictures. This experiment did help a lot because I managed to find a few different apps which I can use when working from home and now I know the tools which will create colour effects however I will still look into some tutorials to try get the ‘80s’ look and try those out when it comes to my production.

  12. If you do any additional subject research, record that here. This might be most relevant if you are producing a magazine or a documentary but even a fiction trailer might require some additional research in to a particular subject. Getting some background information on your subject would be a really good idea. Find some resources, log them, read them and write something about them.

  15. Undertaking practical research is another great way to improve your project. Experimenting with techniques, equipment and processes you might want to use in you project will help you plan for the future. Think about what you will research. It could be studio photography, or sound recording, or post-production techniques for video or animation techniques for a video game. Tutorials are useful here. Make something similar but unrelated to your chosen idea. Do not make it a version of your final product; it is an experiment Provide a reflection of the processes you used and how it has been useful. Don’t do something that you already know how to do.
