RE: Status & Road Map by Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman
Challenges & Way Forward
Topics Challenges Likely Solution
Utility Scale
Solar Park
1.Scarcity of suitable land
2.Difficulties to construct evacuation
facility through private Lands.
3.High cost and complexity of Land
procuring and its development
4.Still high tariff though deceasing
5.Lack of cooperation from other
government agencies.
1. Solar park can be installed in
neighboring countries and power can
be imported through cross border
agreement.
2. Government can manage and
develop land, evacuation system up
to plant area and go for tariff bidding.
3. Government should issue a circular
for avoiding complexities among
different agencies to establish solar
park.
Solar
Minigrid
1. Expansion of National Grid Clear policy/Guideline should be needed
to purchase electricity from Minigrid after
grid expansion in Minigrid area.
RE: Status & Road Map by Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman
Challenges & Way Forward
Topics Challenges Likely Solution
Solar
Irrigation
1. Grid expansion and give connection to
LLP and SLPLack of co-ordination
2. Lack of optimum utilization of solar
system due to absence of policy
support
1. Stop giving electric connection to LLP
or SLP and Clearly Demark the area
for solar irrigation system
2. Clear policy/Guideline need to
formulate to purchase excess
electricity from solar irrigation system.
Wind
Energy
1. Authentication of Data
2. Lack of co-ordination
3. High tariff
1. Establishing Central wind resource
data center in SREDA
2. Developing necessary guideline to
implement wind project.
3. Considering sustainability this sector
should be subsidized
Waste to
Energy
1. Generation cost is high
2. Lack of co-ordination between power
sector and City corporations
1. Considering adverse impact on
environment this sector should be
subsidized by power division and city
corporations.
RE: Status & Road Map by Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman
UNDP Supports Government with Development of Sustainable
Renewable Energy Power Generation (SREPGen) project since 2014
Specific Objective:
• Emission reductions of about 1.64 Mtons CO2
• Support SREDA to achieve 10% share of RE in the power generation
mix of Bangladesh by 2021
Budget: US$ 4.07 million (GEF)
Project Components:
• Component 1: RE policy and regulatory support program
• Component 2: (RE) Resource assessment support program (Solar,
Wind, Bio-mass)
Project Components-wise contribution so far and plan
Component 1: RE policy and regulatory support program
16
1.Assessment of base-level standard tariff for utility scale solar IPP projects considering the
local climatic, geographic and grid condition and power evacuation facilities;
2.Solutions for grid integration of solar irrigation pumps (SIP) and solar PV mini-grids
3.Template agreements for rooftop solar and its grid integration
4.Energy Net Metering Guideline and Handbook;
5.Regulations for standards for PV system and preferred PV system
6.Regulations for disposal of PV systems wastes (e.g. panels, batteries):
7.RE power generation action plan 2019-2041;
8.Capacity Building Need Assessment and training of 500 officials
• These very important policy documents will bring significant change in realizing
RE sector potential in Bangladesh once adopted by the government
Project Components-wise contribution so far and plan
Component 2: (RE) Resource assessment support program (Solar, Wind, Bio-mass)
17
1. National Solar Irradiance Study
2. Nation-wide Bio Mass Study
3. Wind resource assessment in Manpura:
Project Components-wise contribution so far and plan
Component 3: Diffusion of RE solutions to low-income households
18
• 5000 PVSL with 30 USD grant have been distributed
• Solar-Wind Hybrid mini-grid in South Sakuchia of Manpura Upazilla of Bhola
district with 279.5+100 = 379.5 kW capacity is under construction with
support from SREPGen.
• Another Solar mini-grid at Sadar Union of Manpura Upazilla of Bhola district
with 218 kW capacity is under construction with support from SREPGen.
Project Components-wise contribution so far and plan
Component 4: Renewable energy investment scale-up
19
1. Five solar boats have been developed and those are currently operational
with potential to convert 1.5 million diesel run boats in the country
2. Two Solar Charging Stations have been installed to charge Easy-bikes
3. Feasibility Study of Waste to energy in six municipalities
4. A pilot Waste to Energy (W2E) project has been planned.
5. Piloting Arsenic removing solar PV pumps.
6. Solar Ice Plant at Char Montaz of Rangabali is under construction
7. Grid Integration Piloting for Solar Irrigation Pump with potential to
install and convert 100000 SIP
Solar Power Plant (Mini-grid) and Ice Plant

  • 13. Challenges & Way Forward Topics Challenges Likely Solution Utility Scale Solar Park 1.Scarcity of suitable land 2.Difficulties to construct evacuation facility through private Lands. 3.High cost and complexity of Land procuring and its development 4.Still high tariff though deceasing 5.Lack of cooperation from other government agencies. 1. Solar park can be installed in neighboring countries and power can be imported through cross border agreement. 2. Government can manage and develop land, evacuation system up to plant area and go for tariff bidding. 3. Government should issue a circular for avoiding complexities among different agencies to establish solar park. Solar Minigrid 1. Expansion of National Grid Clear policy/Guideline should be needed to purchase electricity from Minigrid after grid expansion in Minigrid area. RE: Status & Road Map by Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman
  • 14. Challenges & Way Forward Topics Challenges Likely Solution Solar Irrigation 1. Grid expansion and give connection to LLP and SLPLack of co-ordination 2. Lack of optimum utilization of solar system due to absence of policy support 1. Stop giving electric connection to LLP or SLP and Clearly Demark the area for solar irrigation system 2. Clear policy/Guideline need to formulate to purchase excess electricity from solar irrigation system. Wind Energy 1. Authentication of Data 2. Lack of co-ordination 3. High tariff 1. Establishing Central wind resource data center in SREDA 2. Developing necessary guideline to implement wind project. 3. Considering sustainability this sector should be subsidized Waste to Energy 1. Generation cost is high 2. Lack of co-ordination between power sector and City corporations 1. Considering adverse impact on environment this sector should be subsidized by power division and city corporations. RE: Status & Road Map by Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman
  • 15. UNDP Supports Government with Development of Sustainable Renewable Energy Power Generation (SREPGen) project since 2014 Specific Objective: • Emission reductions of about 1.64 Mtons CO2 • Support SREDA to achieve 10% share of RE in the power generation mix of Bangladesh by 2021 Budget: US$ 4.07 million (GEF) Project Components: • Component 1: RE policy and regulatory support program • Component 2: (RE) Resource assessment support program (Solar, Wind, Bio-mass)
