How Does Plath Use Metaphors In Munich Mannequins
Plath s use of metaphor is effective in highlighting her depressive state, Plath often used metaphors
frequently and used them as a contrast to her own reality. Through Plath s poetry, we understand
that she was conflicted about being a woman and often viewed the world with a very childlike
mindset. Plath s poem The Munich Mannequins , is a poem which floats between two images of
womanly barrenness through the image of anonymous mannequins to the hotels of Munich where
the occupants are just as anonymous as the mannequins we are introduced to in the first few
stanzas. The anonymous characters that Plath creates in this poem suggests to the reader about her
stillborn child who she never knew and never got to meet. The first few stanzas are... Show more

Cold as snow breath, it tamps the womb Where the yew trees blow like hydras. The tree of life and
the tree of life Unloosing their moons, month after month, to no purpose. The beginning of the
poem begins with an unequivocal, Perfection is terrible, it cannot have children. The word choice
of perfection refers to the opening image of mannequins and suggests the idea that women in Plath
s time were either able to bear children or were a perfectly formed mannequin. Through this
quotation, we understand that Plath was confused about what society wanted from women and
what she was to think about these views. In many of her poems, such as Lady Lazarus , she tries to
defeat the stigma attached to not having children and often tries to fight against the views that her
culture had, however in poems like The Munich Mannequins we see Plath conforming to these
views by degrading and dehumanising these perfect women. Plath dehumanises these childless

If Raskolnikov does not meet Marmeladov, he will probably not commit the murder because he
is still unsure about this crime until Marmeladov reminded him : My dear sir! Do you not know

The Odyssey Essay
The Odyssey is a Greek word meaning the tale of Odysseus. ; Odysseus, the King of Ithaca;
husband of Penelope; father of Telemachus; and son of Laertes was not able to return home after
the war he was once in: the Trojan War. Stuck on an island, he is presumed dead. In his absence,
suitors for his wife ruin his house with lavish feasts. This epic poem, by Homer, describes how
Odysseus, with the help of the gods, gets home and regains his kingship. Justice is always harsh in
the Odyssey; there is either no justice or a lot of it; the punishment however, is always severe.
Justice in the Odyssey plays out among these characters: Odysseus and his crew, the suitors,
Poseidon, Aeolus, Hyperion, Agamemnon, Aegisthus, Melanthius, Melantho,... Show more content

When Odysseus departed from Calypso s island, Poseidon noticed and wrecked havoc using his
powers of the sea: [Odysseus] heard the thunder of surf on a rocky coast. With an angry roar the
great seas were battering at the rocky land and all was veiled in spray. There were no coves, no
harbours, that would hold a ship; nothing but headlands jutting out, sheer rock and jagged reefs ;
(pg. 81 82). Also after the Phaeacians had helped Odysseus, Poseidon punished them for their
kindness to his enemy. Hyperion, the sun god, loved his cattle and told Odysseus and his crew
not to eat them. When the crew was starving, they slaughtered and ate Hyperion s cows.
Hyperion demanded justice from the gods: Father Zeus and you other blessed gods who live for
ever, take vengeance on the followers of Odysseus. . . They have criminally killed my cattle, the
cattle that gave me such joy every day as I climbed the starry sky and as I dropped down from
heaven and sank once more to earth ; (pg. 190). Zeus answered Hyperion and killed all of
Odysseus crew. Aeolus had given Odysseus a large leather bag, which contained the strong winds
that could set them off course. Odysseus crew got curious and opened the bag. All the strong
winds hurried them off course, and they eventually landed back to Aeolus island. They went to
Aeolus and asked for help. However Aeolus was very mad for the crew s carelessness and

The Oresteia By Sophocles, The Libation Bearers, And The...
Aeschylus Writing Assignment The Oresteia written by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus,
who showed three events of the play Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. The
three plays were performed at the annual Dionysia festival in Athens in 458 BCE. The play
highlighted different types of themes but the most important one is the theme of justice and
injustice. Both themes were seen in different parts of the play where even the gods played a role
in determining the justice and injustice in the play. Justice is also divided into two types in the play
as human and divine justice. This essay will talk about both justice, and injustice in the play, and
the different parts of justice. In the beginning of The Oresteiait talks about how King Agamemnon
gave his own daughter Iphigeneia as a sacrifice to Artemis so they could continue in proceeding
with the war in Troy. Agamemnon s decision is considered as injustice since he gave his only
daughter so he could enter the war. As the Chorus started the play they highlighted that the fact they
were at war with Troy was justice to them. However, the way Agamemnon led the war was injustice
for the way he sacrificed his daughter for the war. After the return of Agamemnon from the Trojan
Warhe did not only return by himself but he bought Cassandra the princess of Trojan who he had
taken as a concubine for him. Although by the Greeks is considered justice but, it is still injustice
since her land was destroyed she

Women In Lysistrata
So often we imagine the people of the past as, if not quite stodgy, then definitely as less sexual than
the current generation. Aristophanes Lysistrata, takes that idea and turns it on its head, proving
beyond a shadow of a doubt that people have always been sexual beings with appetites similar to
our own. Aristophanesexcels at the bawdy double entendre and certainly this play can be enjoyed
as nothing more than what it presents itself as, a farcical sexual comedy, but that would be doing it
a great disservice. Aristophanes used the comedic situations and the women in Lysistrata and their
struggle against a small group of old men, as a safe way to express his criticisms of the ongoing
Peloponnesian War and the current government. The basic plot of... Show more content on

We re told in the introduction to the play that the women of Athenswere stereotypically seen as
lustful, shamelessly sexual, and prone to drunkenness (765), not your typical activists. The women
even say in regards to themselves, but what can women do that s sensible or grand? We re good
and putting make up on, designer clothes and wigs and necklaces, imported gowns and fancy
lingerie! (1.42 45) By having the characters admit they are lazy, alcoholic and lustful, it makes their
role as main characters funny and the situation on the ridiculous side, otherwise the author s critique
of the war, through the play, may not have been received well. Aristophanes must use women to
couch his complaints against the government, because if he had used men doing the same things
(occupying the citadel, taking over the money), it may have been seen as a call to arms rather than
a commentary on their society. When such foolish creatures have to tell men what to do, the war
the men are fighting must be pretty foolish indeed, he seems to say. Aristophanes uses the low
status of women in Athens society to make his critique as non threatening as

The Dangers Of Web Based Attacks
Every day, hackers release attacks designed to manipulate, snip confidential data, and businesses
web applications and database servers are often the primary targets of these attacks. The main
drive of these kind of attacks to get a hold of private and sensitive data, they can swiftly extract
value, cause damage or effect business operations. So in other words basically web applications are
today serving as business s open face to the World Wide Web.
According to VERACODE An application vulnerability is a system error or weakness in an
application that could be misused to compromise the application security. As soon as an attacker

Injection vulnerabilities
Injection vulnerabilities is one of the most common exploits where a hacker can use the area of
susceptibility with the aim to gain access to sensitive data. Injection vulnerabilities take place each
time an application directs untrusted data to an interpreter. Injection errors are most common and
they affect an extensive array of solutions. The injection flaws are easily noticeable if analyzing
and studying the code done properly, however often hard to catch through testing sessions while
systems are by that time deployed in production environments. The possible costs of a cyber attack
that perform an Injection flaw are loss of sensitive data and resulting exposure

Disadvantages Of Federalism
Federalism is a type of government where the power is divided between local governments and
federal governments. The U.S., India, Australia, Russia and Brazil are some examples of
federalist countries. While this type of practice has its upsides, it has downsides as well as
alternatives. One alternative to a federal system would be a unitary system. While a federal
government(such as the one in the U.S.) divides power between national governments and local
governments, a unitary government does not and all the power is in the national government ex
if the U.S. used a unitary government, marijuana would either be legal or illegal in the whole
country compared to in the current federal government where various states have marijuana
legalized such as; Washington, California, Colorado, and others haven t legalized this drug;
Texas, Idaho, Utah. A common misconception about a unitary government is that it is a
dictatorship, which is not the case at all, they can still be democracies like France, question is
would the people be more comfortable with all the power in the central government or a division
of that power to local or state governments. The balance of power between the federal and state
government has had some changes over time, with laws being put in place to ensure each has a
fair area to control. In the U.S., the Civil War took place because the south believed that the state
had the right to make its own decision on slavery while the north disagreed and

Analysis Of The War In Iraq
The basic levels of analysis start at the individual level. This is done by locating the sources of
behaviors and outcomes of the characteristics and natural tendencies of people. Examples of the
variables would be one s perceptions, personality, and preferences. By using these variables, one
can analyze the effects those individuals will have on the policies. In the war in Iraq, we can analyze
the individual role George W. Bushhad as the President of the United States. Because the President
viewed Saddam Hussein as aggressive and dangerous, Bush chose to declare war against them in
order to prevent further attacks. George W. Bush s personality as a protector and a leader would
cause him to feel the need to protect his country, and also the allies of the United States. He saw
the signs of aggression as acts of hostility and proceeded to intervene on the Iraqi situation.... Show

This could be based on the country s government, religious affiliations, and the country s
diplomacy and foreign policy. Representatives and the people of one country will act as one

viewed democracy as a better government compared to Iraq s aggressive one, and lead a group of
other states who supported democracy to change the Iraq s government in favor of the United
States belief. Because the USA had a different political belief than the Iraqis, it caused tension and

Now we will discuss a brief history of early atomic battery development.
Henry G. J. Moseley, known for developing the Atomic Number and numerous other contributions
to physics and chemistry, created the first known atomic battery in 1913 with his demonstration of
the beta cell. He experimented with a radioactive isotope of the element radium, and the respective
emissions of beta particles, to form the first atomic battery (source 5). This first crude battery
saw minimal success and effectiveness, and it wasn t until 1954 when the Radio Corporation of
America (RCA) began studying atomic batteries for the use of small radio receivers and hearing
aids that atomic batteries became practical and more potential was realized (source 6). Moving
forward to the 1980 s, inventor Paul Brown developed an atomic battery that was much more
powerful than most thermal batteries out at the time. Brown used the emission of alpha and beta
particles in radioactive materials to create an extremely powerful magnetic field. As discussed
before, these alpha and beta particles contain kinetic energy to help collide atomic particles. The
energy produced from this system was so rapid and immense that controlling the cell was extremely
difficult. This proved to be a towering roadblock for most scientists to continue research for atomic
batteries, until Brown was able to invent an approach to encompass the uncontrollable magnetic
fields. This battery was so powerful

Analysis Of Emily s A Rose For Emily
Love is a morphing entity that devours everyone from conception to death. Love is a beautiful,
disgusting phenomena that allows deep relationships to form between persons or between people
and objects. In A Rose For Emily , Emily experiences a large variety of bittersweet instances of
love. Emily Is shown overbearing lovefrom her father, materialistic love from Tobe, first love
from Homer Barron and curious love from the town. When a person experiences love it s hard to
let go of that person or object. Emily fears to loose love from anyone especially after the sudden
loss of her only love at the time, her father. After Emily s father passed, Emily fears that she can
just as easily loose grasp of any other person whom she grows attached to. Perhaps the traumatic
experience or fear of losing love is enough drive poor Mrs. Emily well into the twisted path of
insanity. Emily first experiences love from the controlling hands of her father. Emily s father
solely prevents any young man from even growing close to his precious daughter. so when she
got to be thirty and was still single , we were not pleased exactly, but vindicated; even with
insanity in the family she wouldn t have turned down all of her chances if they had really
materialized . Emily s father knew that no man could love his daughter as much as he does.
Therefore no one was able to date his daughter until his death. Emily showed no emotion about her

The Theory Of Scientific Management Essay
According to Miller (2010) Scientific management (Taylorism) was devised by Frederick Taylor to
improve economic efficiency especially labor productivity by analyzing and establishing
workflows. It was one of the earliest attempts to apply science to the engineering of processes and to
management. Taylor s scientific managementwas based on four principles. The first is replacing
the rule of thumb work methods with methods based on a scientific study. The second is selecting,
training and developing the most suitable person for the job. The third principle is managers
should give out detailed instructions on how to do the job scientifically and supervise workers. The
last principle is dividing the tasks between managers and workers. This paper will discuss if these
scientific management principles are outdated in the study of organizations. I will present the
principles and explain their relevance in current organizations.
The rule of thumb is a procedure that developed from experience and common sense. It totally
ignores scientific knowledge. Taylor argued that for an organization to become more efficient
managers had to develop a science of work that is cultivating methods based on a scientific study of
those tasks. Morgan (2006) asserts that this was done to determine the most efficient way of doing
work. The scientific method would therefore simplify worker s tasks in detail and specify the
amount of work needed to do the task and the necessary time to finish that

The Role Of Flappers In The 1920 s
The way everyone presents themselves in the 1920s by dressing as chosen and fashion styles,
people show this by each gender having their own style of clothes. One of the roles for a female
is flappers who are independent females. At night they dressed up to go out to nightclubs in
dresses and high heels and crazy fashion styles. Flappers also changed there hair style to be
different and act out such as Jordan Baker said You ve dyed your hair since then (Fitzgerald 43).
Jordan had no idea who the girl was because she changed her hair so much that she couldn t be

staying the same and changing styles a lot. During the age of the flapper, females

What are the economic, social and political reasons for Catalonia s desire to secede from Spain?
Since Catalonia s post Franco reinstatement in 1980, September 11th has been a day to celebrate
the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. La Dia Nacional de Catalunya, or The National Day
of Catalonia, has never been celebrated like it was on September 11th, 2012. An estimated 1.5
million people demanded independence for Catalonia on the streets of Barcelona, waving the new

With over 1,000 years of distinct regional history, their own language, a huge population and strong
economy, many Catalan s believe that they are a separate nation already, and want to legitimize it.
Catalan national parties have been a very powerful force in Catalan politics since the reconvention
of the Catalan government, or the Generalitat, in 1977. In 2012, the Generalitat was ruled by the
CiU (ConvergГ©ncia I UniГі) and Arturo Mas, CiU s leader. Mas s push for an early vote in
November 2014 is an example of how Catalan politics are playing a large role in the movement
towards independence. Although many Spaniards argue that Catalonia already has their own
regional government, Catalan s argue that their interests are not properly represented in Madrid.
There has never been a Catalan Prime Minister, and the Catalan s believe that Catalonia will not be

The objective of my thesis is to better understand the factors that underlie Catalonia s desire to
secede from Spain. Borrowing from academic literature, this thesis will identify the economic,
ethnic/social and political factors that have played a role in the movement towards Catalan
independence. The method for my thesis will be a case study and historical methodology and
possibly a non participant observation. This methodology will allow me to address the research

Atrocities Laziest People In Nigeria
Having read your write ups, it is obvious that you are blaming the atrocities laziest people in Nigeria

those in authority are corrupt, I don t think that is a reason for justifying laziness, greediness, and
evil that people commit. If the government had done everything it could to establish a healthy
environment for Nigerians, so many people would have yet indulged in atrocities. Nigeria is an
environment in which the majority of the inhabitants wants to be rich overnight, and that is what
gave birth to the corruption we witness today at all levels of government and institutions in Nigeria.

The process of gathering this information was quiet difficult and that s why we decided to take
an alternative route in determining this numbers. First of we got the total population of the
U.S. from the Census and then the percentage of people having smartphones for given years in
which from that point we got the total population of Florida and the total percentage of the
market age group that was specified . In which we than got the total from both calculations and
divided them and that s how we got the number of sales for smartphones. In the process of
calculating the sales of iPads we got the number of iPads sold for given years in the U.S. in
which we then multiplied that number by the percent of Florida market share. We finally got the
total sales from Net pads form a websites that estimated that they sale approximately 600 of their
products each year. When we final got all the total calculations for each individual device we than
added them up and that was our number for the market share for high tech devices in Florida. The
next step was to get the total number of high tech devices and multiply it by two for the given
factor that we also have the exterior market (potential customers outside Florida).
Finally we got all our number and determine the slope, and the intercept in order to find out the
forecast for the next

Flattened Fauna by Roger M. Knutson
Book Review of Flattened Fauna
Flattened Fauna, the book all about road kill. How could one not be interested in learning more
about the flattened animals that litter our roads? I was certainly intrigued by the idea that the
study of these very dead animals actually exists. This book contains all sorts of information about
flattened fauna such as how to study it, where to study it, why flattened fauna exists, details about
the most popular and or dangerous fauna, and of course why it is studied in the first place. The
following paragraphs will give a summary of the book Flattened Fauna, what to expect of the
book, and how the book relates to furthering ones knowledge of Biology.
The author states that this book is supposed to encourage the appreciation and study of road fauna.
The author even mentions that a trip of one thousand miles presents the opportunity to see, identify,
and possibly enjoy four hundred to four thousand animals. The author encourages the reader to
think of the road as a habitat. Most animal habitats such as forests, lakes, marshes, and such have
been apart of the world for millions of years, and the new roads conveniently run through these
habitats. These new roads and highways are a relatively new part of these animals natural habitat,
but the animals still include these roads as a part of their traditional habitat. Animals have not had a
significant amount of time to adapt to this relatively new habitat. The road fauna is quite new

Industrial relations ideologies
Introduction A frame of reference is not a philosophical concept. It refers to one s worldview
and the evaluation or judgement of one s observations. One s frame of reference coincides with
one s behaviour and the consequences thereof. Therefore, a frame of reference is fixed but one
needs to be sensitive and accept individual differences in frames of reference. This paper aims to
address the frame of reference of Pick n Pay s chairman and joint managing director, Mr Raymond
Ackerman. The arguments presented in this paper are my own with a theoretical basis from the
work of Bluen (1987). My interpretation of Mr Ackerman s frame of reference will be presented in
relation to the organisation, conflict, collective bargaining and trade... Show more content on

This reiterates the notion of balance of power. Collective bargaining The ability for positions to
reach a consensus is reached through collective bargaining. Bluen (1987) infers that the pluralist
frame of reference does not seek to remove conflict but to manage it. Mr Ackerman
acknowledged the existence of conflict and tried to manage it by sending his negotiating team to
resolve the conflict and end the strike. Mr Ackerman has a pluralist view because he believes the
issue should have been resolved during negotiations. He even went as far as awarding greater
bargaining flexibility to the negotiating team. The mere fact that Mr Ackerman was so determined
to resolve the conflict though means of collective bargaining should eliminate the likelihood of a
unitary frame of reference. Collective bargaining, an equitable balance of power, and essentially
the aim to compromise confirm that Mr Ackerman holds a pluralist view on industrial relations. Mr
Ackerman fought to reach a consensus for personal and economic reasons. The breakthrough to
reach a consensus was achieved after he delivered his speech. He appealed to the opposing union
members by focusing on personal matters. This led to the agreement of a negotiation. Mr Ackerman
considered going up on his agreement and the union considered going down on theirs. No
suppression or unilateral decision making occurred. In

Delayed-Onset DOMS
INTRODUCTION
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is muscle soreness secondary to exercise, characterized by
increasing pain or discomfort during subsequent 24 72 hours, and subsiding within few days
(Elsevier 2009). This was often associated with athletes and coaches where they usually lead to
detrimental to their performance and recovery after activities. Although its physiological
mechanism has not yet determine, it may relate to primary mechanical damage that may happen to
muscle cells during exercise. Because of its transient nature (peak soreness 24 to 72 hours and
resolution of symptoms within 5 7 days) experimentally induced delayed onset muscle is used as a
model of myogenic pain to study the effects of different therapeutic modalities. Due to a ... Show

Such strategies include: massage, stretching, and anti inflammatory medications. Studies to date
have demonstrated different and mixed results of these treatments on delayed onset muscle
soreness, mostly with minimal analgesic effects, and inconsistent effects on strength, joint range
and CK levels.
Over the past decades cryotherapy has been as a strategy in the management of delayed onset
muscle soreness. Cryotherapy is a medical treatment in which all or part of the body is subjected
to cold temperature such as ice packs. (Collins English Dictionary Complete Unabridged 2012
Digital Edition). One of the techniques of cryotherapy that have been used is the ice immersion. Ice
immersion is a technique for administering therapeutic cold treatments to the distal extremities
(e.g., the ankle or hand) with a mixture of water and crushed, flaked, or cubed ice with a
temperature range 50МЉ to 60МЉ F (10МЉ 15МЉ C). (Medical Dictionary, 2009 Farlex and

Why Is A Starfish So Slow But Never Has Tiny Particles...
Why is a starfish so slow but never has tiny particles like algae and barnicles on it? The answer is
pedicellariae. Pedicellariae are the spikes on starfish. They engulf algae and barnicles before they
can attach to the starfish. We re designing a boat paint that is able to mimic the functions of
pedicellariae. Boatpaint has been affecting aquatic habitats for thousands of years and counting.
Scientists have tried changing the ingredients but no matter what they try, species of animals
have been harmed. Many of us just leave the dirty work of choosing bottom paint for our vessel
to our local boat repair yard. This is a good choice, since most yards know just what type of paint
is best. We should be aware of available choices and what bottom paints are environmentally
friendly. This would create a non harmful way of keeping your boat bottom in good shape.
The year 2011 may be remembered as the year when sailors started thinking differently about
copper. After centuries of relying on toxic metals to ward off growth on the bottoms of boats,
sailors are awakening to a new era of environmental consequences, greater regulation, and
breakthroughs in science and paint technology. Generally, antifouling paints contain at least one
biocide, an ingredient capable of poisoning marine life that would cling to the hull, but getting these
toxins to work usually requires either friction or a chemical reaction. Florida has found 160 miles of
estuaries contaminated with copper,

Universal Background Checks
Many innocent lives each year are taken away because most states do not have laws particularly
dealing with private dealers administering background checks. Background checks are needed to
make sure that clients who are purchasing firearms will not use the gun to endanger themselves or
others. However, even in the states where background checks are administered the laws still consist
of many loopholes; some of these include, not checking for mental illnesses that the client might
have , not following up on the client after they purchased the gun, and how private sellers and many
states are not administrating strict and complete background checks., Researchers confirm that

Domination Metaphor And The Boeing Case
Introduction The purpose of this memo is to explain the domination metaphor and the Boeing case
while relating the two and providing a recommendation for moving forward. The domination
metaphor is important to discuss because it explores the idea that some organizations are
instruments of domination that impose their will on others to continue their advancement through
exploitation. I will be discussing the key points of the domination metaphor, the Boeing case and
the necessary OD interventions that address the case in relation to the metaphor. Domination
Metaphor: The organism metaphor views organizations as instruments of domination. Morgan says
that organizations often have a negative impact on our world (Morgan, 2006, p. 293). The idea of
looking at organizations as instruments of domination brings attention to issues such as
environmental and social responsibilities of organizations. The metaphor brings up environmental
issues by accusing organizations of poisoning the general public through food additives and the
pollution of our environment, including our water system. Max Weber identified three types of
social domination. People can be dominated through charisma, through tradition (custom), and
through rational legal (rules and laws). (Morgan, 2006, p. 291) Within this metaphor, profits are
always considered over people while people are exploited or used to better the modern slave driver
efficiency (Morgan, 2006, p. 296). This metaphor attempts to get us to

The Earth By Jules Verne
Theme 1 In the science fiction novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, the topics
of science vs imagination brings forward numerous themes. Even though this novel is based mainly
on imagination, there are still many real life themes and ideas that are relevant. One of these
themes is keeping a lasting pride in one s occupation and job. Throughout the entire introduction,
Axel, the protagonist in the story observes his uncle, Otto Lidenbrock, a well renowned German
scientist working diligently to decipher a cryptograph that reveals priceless information on the
location of an opening that will help them reach the center of the earth. Lidenbrock, in the novelis

Furthermore, when Axel s failed attempt to get out of his uncle s journey comes to a stop, his
disappointment is represented in the first person perspective. Axel s fear of accompanying his
uncle is only truly expressed due to the point of view. While they are having dinner, Axel thinks
to himself These last words sent a shiver through my whole body. I kept my selfcontrol though. I
even resolved to put on a brave face. Only scientific arguments could stop Professor Lidenbrock
now. And there was no lack of arguments, and good ones, against such a journey being possible.
Go to the centre of the Earth? What madness! But I kept my reasoning for a more suitable moment,
and instead gave my full attention to the meal. This not only provides insight on Axel s thoughts
but more importantly provides proof of his uncle s crazy devotions to science.
Theme 2 Like the first theme of determination and pride in work, another similar theme that takes
a different outlook on the same events is the idea of if sacrifice is really worth it at the end. As
shown in the last analysis, Professor Lidenbrock is very dedicated to his work as a scientist and
perhaps maybe a little too dedicated and too involved. He undervalues everything else about life
except his scientific discoveries. Lidenbrock even skips meals for a couple of days not realizing
the troubles that could occur to his nephew or even his goddaughter Grauben. He also does not
make any consideration

In this article, Azam and Mansoor review public and private waste management sectors, and the
possibilities for partnership. By conducting a literature review, they conclude that the current
isolated arrangement in the industry should be replaced with a vertical integration between small
scale agencies and the public sector. The main limitation of the article is that it focuses developing
countries as a whole, thus the suggestion may not be applied in particular city due to the
complexity of social and political structure. This article is relevant to PLAN 440/674 because it
discusses waste management in developing countries.

America s Downward Spiral Summary
America s Downward Spiral
In recent years, the economy in the United States has been in what most would see as a
recession. American people differ in the way they react to a recession. Some, such as Michael
Moore, feel it becomes a downward spiral as big business and it s stockholders gain more money
and power, and it s workers gain less money and stability.
With a loss of stability for the American worker there is a fear of losing their health benefits,
social security, pension plan, and most of all, their job. Moore s reaction to this big business take
over was to create several documentaries, Roger and Me, Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint, and

Nike owns factories in Indonesia where they pay their workers forty cents an hour. Johnson
Controls moved from Milwaukee to Mexico, because a half million dollar profit in three years was
not enough for them, they wanted to increase their profit further. (Moore)
As these large companies downsize and close they push hundreds of people out of jobs. This
forces middle class to live below the standards they had been so accustomed to, this is a term not
many are familiar with called downward mobility. This was outlined by Katherine Newman as she
wrote about David Patterson who had a very stable career in the computer industry and one day lost
it and was unable to find work. This forced the family to move from their nice neighborhood to
an apartment. Broke and distressed beyond imagining, the family found a small apartment in a
modest section of a nearby town. (Newman) This being the light side of what happens to those
forced out of work unable to find a new job. Jo Goodwin Parker shares her life story, the ultimate
low, poverty. Poverty means insects in your food, in your nose, in your eyes, and crawling over
you when you sleep. (Parker)
Poverty and downward mobility are unfortunately not the only problems striking the American
working class. It is fact that some jobs are simply not needed anymore. That of the laborer is just
depleting. Some might even call it a dying breed (LaFevre 1) Mike LaFevre is part of the working

Patient doctor relationships may be strained and antagonistic for those with lupus. This is because
the physician s experience varies from the lived experience by the patients. It is common for
patients with chronic diseases to struggle to appear as credible patients to their physicians, thus,
patients with lupus may use different strategies to receive treatment for their undiagnosed chronic
pain (Class notes: Chronic Illnessppt, 2016). Patients with lupus may experience a power

Shaw Stabler has battled systematic lupus for several years, enduring serious side effects, such
as kidney failure, along the way. In her narrative, Live with the Wolf and Surviving Lupus, she
provides optimistic views to patients struggling with lupus. She does this by encouraging lupus
patients to keep the faith and continue the fight, (Shaw Stabler, 2010 14). She goes onto explain
that communication with one s body is key when dealing with a chronic diseases such as lupus.
This is because you can only take action once you know what your body is trying to
communicate with you. For Shaw Stabler, she began to listen to her body is 1978. This is when
she discovered that she had lupus. The author acknowledges the fact that having lupus is hard;
Too often our disabilities are invisible, and in our culture, if one isn t missing a limb or an eye or
even bleeding visibly, they are not seen as being disabled, (Shaw Stabler, 2010 16). This
maintains the notion that those with chronic diseases do not fit the sick role clearly. The sick
role is defined as social expectations regarding how society should view sick people and how sick
people should behave (Class notes: Social Meanings of Illness ppt

be described below.
Quiet storming. Because of the topic of the group, I expect members to be able to relate to each

storming where members will avoid engaging in the conversation. There might be a conflict within
them between how much they wish to share. When I see members exhibiting this type of behavior
in the group, I will mention that they have been quiet for a while and ask them if they wish to share.
Resistance. If members express resistance and are not ready to share about certain topics at this
moment, I will let them know that it is okay and that we can come back to it another time. Because
the group will still be getting acquainted with one another, I do not want to push any members to
share things that they are not yet ready to share. I want to continue to build the group members trust

The terms modern , modernity and modernism are commonly used to specify a break in history,
marking a definition between the present and the past, between the fashionable and the out of date,
and carry as part of their meaning an almost criticism of tradition. By calling himself a modernist ,
the artist is instantly free to work on a clean plate, without the limitations of tradition with its set of

It is commonly thought that the Modernist movement was only properly established during the late

Perhaps this idea is more easily understood when in relation to our social plane today, with it?s
emphasis on instant joy and fun morality, which in turn create a confusion between self
realization and basic self gratification. In today?s pop cult we are imprisoned by a grave
contradiction in society. On the one hand, advertising and marketing have immersed us into a life
of compulsive consumption, and we are led to believe that happiness can easily be paid for at a
beauty centre or purchased in a bottle of aromatic bath salts?on the other, we are also expected to
work day in and day out, in order to keep up the organised business corporations that make these

weeks after the government declared martial law and mobilized as many as 300,000 troops into
Beijing. The death toll is still widely debated. The protests happened during rapid economic and
social developments in China. The students called for political and economic reform, as well as

A Feminist Analysis Of Wonder Woman And Dianna
Wonder Woman
The arrival of Wonder Woman in theaters was celebrated with a fervor not felt since the first wave
of modern superhero films began. The potential of getting a female superhero film after decades of
studios dragging their feet or releasing bizarre messes like Catwoman powered this excitement.
While the character had appeared in adaptation before, these appearances were in animated films
aimed at the inner audience of comic aficionados, or in Saturday morning cartoons. These were fine
representations of the character and her story, but the last attempt to bring the character in front of
mainstream adult audiences were with the ABC/CBS show from the 70s. This was in contrast to

Unsurprisingly, the screeching harpy scenes were written by a formerly great male writer who
turned into a conspiracy theory spewing xenophobe. This complicated history present in the comics

Erasmus And The Renaissance Humanism
Desiderius Erasmus, believed to be the illegitimate son of a Priest named Gerard, was born
around 1466 in the Netherlands. He is also believed to have been born with a different name,
and his birthday is unknown because he was born out of wedlock. Despite this, his father made
sure he had a good education by sending him to a prestigious Latin school when he was 9 years
old. However, when Erasmus s parents died, he was sent to live with guardians who strongly
believed that he should become a Monk. During this time, Erasmus gained a personal
relationship with God but was opposed to the strict rules and teachings of the school. Poverty
eventually forced Erasmus into a monastery in 1492, where he was ordained a Catholic priest.
He then became the secretary for Henry de Bergen, the bishop of Chambray, which allowed him
to travel across Europe for the next ten years to study Latin and literature. These studies led to
his discovery of Renaissance humanism. In the early 1500s, not long after his travels, Erasmus
was invited to lecture in theology at the University of Cambridge and it was during this time that
Erasmus began to publish literature showing his some of his new ideas and criticisms of society
and the church. These ideas started to become well known after he published one of his early
works, Praise of Folly. His ideas stood out from others of the time and sparked debate all over

In a joint study with Deakin University, Australia, and University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada,
students analyzed increases in lipid metabolism gene expression in human skeletal muscle tissue
after exercise training. Looking at previous studies, endurance exercise elicits increased metabolism
of fatty acids (FA) and carbohydrates, in relation with the metabolismof FA it has been shown that
up regulated genes exhibit their corresponding proteins to transport, initiate, bind, and increase
enzyme activity in response to exercise. Therefore the hypothesis is that certain genes will show
expression and the expression of the corresponding proteins will be more abundant after acute
exercise and after an individual has gone through a short term... Show more content on

Once samples were obtained they were placed in liquid nitrogen, once ready for testing of the
sample the researchers used Real Time PCR and corresponding lab chemicals and procedures to
get results of gene expression. In addition to the muscle biopsy they tested VO2 peak, blood
glucose and lactose levels, and heart rate exchange. These results were used to analyze fat
oxidation. After the nine day exercise bout the initial FA oxidation had increased in the skeletal
muscle by 24%. This increase equates to be 4.5 g of oxidized fat. The analysis of the results
shows gene expression when measured after acute exercise showed no significant change in FA
uptake and breakdown in the (FABP), and (FAT CD36) genes. It also had no significant change
in the corresponding transcription factors. These results are from the biopsies obtained directly
after exercise and 3 hours after exercise on the first day of exercise. The results differed when
analysis of the biopsies were obtained on the ninth day after the exercise routine had ended. This
also was tested one and three hours after exercise had stopped. The results showed that there was
in increase in FAT CD36 and CPT I genes. This shows that there is a direct relationship with
exercise training and the genes responsible for FA being taken across plasma membrane (FAT
CD36) and also for transport gene transporting across the mitochondrial membrane (CPT l). These
results show that that the researchers treatment for the study

Quality Of Quality And Safety
Managing quality and safety is vital in order to deliver effective healthcare today. Unfortunately,
very little is known about the quality of care due to the fact that there are a variety of definitions
used for the term quality (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). This paper will discuss quality management
in this country s healthcare system, some approaches used for quality improvement, as well as the
perspectives of quality healthcare from healthcare professionals and clients.
Defining Quality Healthcare The concept of quality assurance has been around a while, however,
the major urge to improve it has only been around the past few years. According to Stanhope
Lancaster (2014), quality assurance (QA) is one of the evaluative steps in the nursing process. It
uses analytic methods to monitor and detect errors in client standards of safety and care. Another
evaluative step in the nursing process is quality improvement (QI). QI evaluates evidence based
practice and analyzed information in order to make improvements in quality healthcare. Total
quality management (TQM) is a philosophy that focuses on client satisfaction, teamwork, and
continuous quality improvement (CQI). Outcomes of quality healthcare are improved due to TQM.
Continuous quality improvement (CQI) can be described as an ongoing evolvement in healthcare
quality contingent on exploring past deviations from the standard of care. This philosophy involves
constant surveillance of all records and the implementation of

Essay On Vivisection
Imagine your pet spending an entire life in solidarity confinement where he or she is deprived of
food and water, and is electrocuted and force fed chemicals from time to time. This is the life of
animals in a laboratory. Live animal experimentation, also known as vivisection, is not only
unethical, but also cruel and unnecessary. In the article Vivisection is Right, but it is Nasty and We
must be Brave Enough to Admit This , Michael Hanlon claims vivisection is a moral necessity that
without the use of animals in the laboratory, humans would not have modern medicine like
antibiotics, analgesic, and cancer drugs (1). For example, Hanlon believes by sewing kittens
eyelids together can aid researchers to study the effects of amblyopia in... Show more content on

Animal experiments are not a moral necessity to allow human to discover cures for disease, like
cancer or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). In fact, the genetic composition of
animals is completely different from human, and there might be catastrophic results if a
medication is given to a human being, even if the medication is tested safe in animals. In other
words, animals exhibit a different genetic and physiology than human beings and when drugs, like
HIV vaccines, are tested on animals the effect of the medication may translate differently in the
human body. For instance, Hanlon gives an example of animal experimentation in which the
Cardiff University done by sewing thirty one kittens eyelids shut to study the effects of lazy eye
in children (1). However, the British Union of the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) argues against
Hanlon s claim that cat brains and cat vision are fundamentally different to human and it is hard to
see how anything useful can be gained by the research (Hanlon 1), and experiments like sewing
kittens eyelids together to study amblyopia have been done many years ago, and yet no cure has
been found (Hanlon 1). Hanlon claim that many surgical procedures would be impossible without
operating on animals in the laboratory, and fears that without animal experimentation, people would
be used as guinea pigs instead (2). By focusing on surgical procedures done on animals, Hanlon
overlooks the deeper

Examples Of Moral Dilemmas
2. What are values and norms and what is a moral dilemma?
To answer this question I will divide the question in three parts.
Starting with what values are. Values are an absolut or relative and ethic value of a person. Values
can be defined as a wide preference for specific actions.
The assumption of those can be a basic form for ethic handling.
A Valuesystem is a set of consistense values and measures. A principale value is a fundamental on
which values and measures of integrity are based.
Some values are physiologically determined and used usually for avoiding fysical pain or for
looking for fun. Other values are subjective, they are different for every individu or for different
religions. These values are more based on religion and their beliefs. Different values are ethical
/moral vales, ideological values, social values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then the last part of this question, moral dilemmas. But what is a Moral dilemma?. A Moral
Dilemma is that two well known cases conflict with eachother. In each case you have moral
reasons to do each of the two actions, but it is not possible to do both. This is what you call moral
dilemmas.
What is really a common factor for moral dilemmas is, is that it is kind of required to do both
actions, in this situation you can choose one of them but you can t do both, so you start feeling
that you failed, because both actions are important for you. No matter which one you will choose
you always have the feeling that you failed or did something wrong. So to recap this all a Moral
Dillema is a Dillema between two factors/choices that are both important to you and whatever you
choose you will always think you made the wrong choice.

Narrative Voice of Frederick Douglass
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
The tone established in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is unusual in that from the
beginning to the end the focus has been shifted. In the beginning of the narrative Douglass seems
to fulfill every stereotypical slavery theme. He is a young black slave who at first cannot read and
is very naГЇve in understanding his situation. As a child put into slavery Douglass does not have
the knowledge to know about his surroundings and the world outside of slavery. In Douglass
narrative the tone is first set as that of an observer, however finishing with his own personal
accounts. When first introduced to Douglass and his story, we find him to be a young slave boy
filled with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Douglass states before narrating any of the peculiar circumstances, I deem it proper to make
known my intention not to state all the facts connected with the transaction. In doing so
Douglass assumed the narrative would lose the interest of its readers, however the mere thought
of a slave man risking his life for a chance to freedom is able to recapture the interest of any facts
left out. In the conclusion of the narrative Frederick Douglass contemplates escaping, weighing
it against the idea of leaving all of his friends. Douglass says, I had a good number of warm
hearted friends in Baltimore, friends that I loved almost as I did my life, and the thought of being
separated from them forever was painful beyond expression. Such a personal tone and accounts
make the reader truly see the change Douglass has gone through since the beginning of the
narrative. The language difference from the beginning up until the conclusion can be based solely
on spirit and education. From the start Douglass did not know much about anything and spoke like
he should have, from a child s view. This includes a child s inquisitiveness, demonstrated by his
speaking of others more than himself. As he grows and matures, and is even given the gift of an
education the language changes dramatically to that of an educated man. Speaking in an
intellectual manner Douglass sees that his ability to read and write has truly set him free. From the
tone of a

Mental Illness In The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath wrote a captivating novel following a young girl through her battle with mental
illness. In her novel, Plath illustrated the extent of prejudice which society exhibited towards
people with metal illness in the 1950 s. Like Plath, Susanna Kaysen wrote about the effect of
mental illness on the patient s lives. Kaysen also revealed how in the 1950 s and 1960 s, the
unwillingness of society to come to terms with the prevalence of mental illness affected the girls
diagnosed. Thus Plath and Kaysen brought to light the issues surrounding mental illness and
society s negative views towards those who suffer from psychological issues. While Plath delivers
her message in the form of an entertaining novel, Kaysen tells her story through a... Show more

In her first journal entry Kaysen tells how the decision for her to go to McLean Hospital was based
on a twenty minute conversation with a psychiatrist. Kaysen had been picking at her acne and
been acting out in ways which would not be considered unusual for teens today, but at the time it
was a sufficient excuse for commitment to an institution. In an interview, Kaysen further
develops the idea that her illness was influenced by outside factors saying, [Her] retrospective
account of her confinement at McLean Hospital makes a cultural intervention that challenges the
notion that mental illness is rooted solely in the individual. (Kaysan, 18). Being surrounded by
girls with serious illnesses forced Kaysen to assume the role of a girl with a real mental illness.
Society forced her to find something wrong with herself in an attempt to fit in. Kaysen questions
what mental illness truly is. She asks, Was everybody seeing this stuff and acting as though they
weren t? Was insanity just a matter of dropping the act? (Kaysen 41). Because Kaysen was
labeled as being mentally ill although she was not, it became hard for her to tell what truly
pronounced someone as mentally ill. Was everyone slightly crazy or were just some better at hiding
it then others? Living in such an uptight society, people had no choice but to put on an act of
perfection. When someone began to drop the

  • 2. How Does Plath Use Metaphors In Munich Mannequins Plath s use of metaphor is effective in highlighting her depressive state, Plath often used metaphors frequently and used them as a contrast to her own reality. Through Plath s poetry, we understand that she was conflicted about being a woman and often viewed the world with a very childlike mindset. Plath s poem The Munich Mannequins , is a poem which floats between two images of womanly barrenness through the image of anonymous mannequins to the hotels of Munich where the occupants are just as anonymous as the mannequins we are introduced to in the first few stanzas. The anonymous characters that Plath creates in this poem suggests to the reader about her stillborn child who she never knew and never got to meet. The first few stanzas are... The word choice of perfection refers to the opening image of mannequins and suggests the idea that women in Plath s time were either able to bear children or were a perfectly formed mannequin. Through this quotation, we understand that Plath was confused about what society wanted from women and what she was to think about these views. In many of her poems, such as Lady Lazarus , she tries to defeat the stigma attached to not having children and often tries to fight against the views that her culture had, however in poems like The Munich Mannequins we see Plath conforming to these views by degrading and dehumanising these perfect women. The Odyssey Essay The Odyssey is a Greek word meaning the tale of Odysseus. ; Odysseus, the King of Ithaca; husband of Penelope; father of Telemachus; and son of Laertes was not able to return home after the war he was once in: the Trojan War. Stuck on an island, he is presumed dead. In his absence, suitors for his wife ruin his house with lavish feasts. This epic poem, by Homer, describes how Odysseus, with the help of the gods, gets home and regains his kingship. Justice is always harsh in the Odyssey; there is either no justice or a lot of it; the punishment however, is always severe. There were no coves, no harbours, that would hold a ship; nothing but headlands jutting out, sheer rock and jagged reefs ; (pg. 81 82). Also after the Phaeacians had helped Odysseus, Poseidon punished them for their kindness to his enemy. Hyperion, the sun god, loved his cattle and told Odysseus and his crew not to eat them. When the crew was starving, they slaughtered and ate Hyperion s cows. Hyperion demanded justice from the gods: Father Zeus and you other blessed gods who live for ever, take vengeance on the followers of Odysseus. . . They have criminally killed my cattle, the cattle that gave me such joy every day as I climbed the starry sky and as I dropped down from heaven and sank once more to earth ; (pg. 190). Zeus answered Hyperion and killed all of Odysseus crew. Aeolus had given Odysseus a large leather bag, which contained the strong winds that could set them off course. Odysseus crew got curious and opened the bag. All the strong winds hurried them off course, and they eventually landed back to Aeolus island. They went to Aeolus and asked for help. Aeschylus Writing Assignment The Oresteia written by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, who showed three events of the play Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. The three plays were performed at the annual Dionysia festival in Athens in 458 BCE. The play highlighted different types of themes but the most important one is the theme of justice and injustice. Both themes were seen in different parts of the play where even the gods played a role in determining the justice and injustice in the play. Justice is also divided into two types in the play as human and divine justice. This essay will talk about both justice, and injustice in the play, and the different parts of justice. In the beginning of The Oresteiait talks about how King Agamemnon gave his own daughter Iphigeneia as a sacrifice to Artemis so they could continue in proceeding with the war in Troy. Agamemnon s decision is considered as injustice since he gave his only daughter so he could enter the war. As the Chorus started the play they highlighted that the fact they were at war with Troy was justice to them. However, the way Agamemnon led the war was injustice for the way he sacrificed his daughter for the war. After the return of Agamemnon from the Trojan Warhe did not only return by himself but he bought Cassandra the princess of Trojan who he had taken as a concubine for him. • 8. Women In Lysistrata So often we imagine the people of the past as, if not quite stodgy, then definitely as less sexual than the current generation. Aristophanes Lysistrata, takes that idea and turns it on its head, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that people have always been sexual beings with appetites similar to our own. Aristophanesexcels at the bawdy double entendre and certainly this play can be enjoyed as nothing more than what it presents itself as, a farcical sexual comedy, but that would be doing it a great disservice. Aristophanes used the comedic situations and the women in Lysistrata and their struggle against a small group of old men, as a safe way to express his criticisms of the ongoing Peloponnesian War and the current government. We re good and putting make up on, designer clothes and wigs and necklaces, imported gowns and fancy lingerie! (1.42 45) By having the characters admit they are lazy, alcoholic and lustful, it makes their role as main characters funny and the situation on the ridiculous side, otherwise the author s critique of the war, through the play, may not have been received well. Aristophanes must use women to couch his complaints against the government, because if he had used men doing the same things (occupying the citadel, taking over the money), it may have been seen as a call to arms rather than a commentary on their society. When such foolish creatures have to tell men what to do, the war the men are fighting must be pretty foolish indeed, he seems to say. • 10. Disadvantages Of Federalism Federalism is a type of government where the power is divided between local governments and federal governments. The U.S., India, Australia, Russia and Brazil are some examples of federalist countries. While this type of practice has its upsides, it has downsides as well as alternatives. One alternative to a federal system would be a unitary system. While a federal government(such as the one in the U.S.) divides power between national governments and local governments, a unitary government does not and all the power is in the national government ex if the U.S. used a unitary government, marijuana would either be legal or illegal in the whole country compared to in the current federal government where various states have marijuana legalized such as; Washington, California, Colorado, and others haven t legalized this drug; Texas, Idaho, Utah. A common misconception about a unitary government is that it is a dictatorship, which is not the case at all, they can still be democracies like France, question is would the people be more comfortable with all the power in the central government or a division of that power to local or state governments. The balance of power between the federal and state government has had some changes over time, with laws being put in place to ensure each has a fair area to control. Now we will discuss a brief history of early atomic battery development. Henry G. J. Moseley, known for developing the Atomic Number and numerous other contributions to physics and chemistry, created the first known atomic battery in 1913 with his demonstration of the beta cell. He experimented with a radioactive isotope of the element radium, and the respective emissions of beta particles, to form the first atomic battery (source 5). This first crude battery saw minimal success and effectiveness, and it wasn t until 1954 when the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) began studying atomic batteries for the use of small radio receivers and hearing aids that atomic batteries became practical and more potential was realized (source 6). Moving forward to the 1980 s, inventor Paul Brown developed an atomic battery that was much more powerful than most thermal batteries out at the time. Brown used the emission of alpha and beta particles in radioactive materials to create an extremely powerful magnetic field. As discussed before, these alpha and beta particles contain kinetic energy to help collide atomic particles. The energy produced from this system was so rapid and immense that controlling the cell was extremely difficult. This proved to be a towering roadblock for most scientists to continue research for atomic batteries, until Brown was able to invent an approach to encompass the uncontrollable magnetic fields. • 18. The Theory Of Scientific Management Essay According to Miller (2010) Scientific management (Taylorism) was devised by Frederick Taylor to improve economic efficiency especially labor productivity by analyzing and establishing workflows. It was one of the earliest attempts to apply science to the engineering of processes and to management. Taylor s scientific managementwas based on four principles. The first is replacing the rule of thumb work methods with methods based on a scientific study. The second is selecting, training and developing the most suitable person for the job. The third principle is managers should give out detailed instructions on how to do the job scientifically and supervise workers. The last principle is dividing the tasks between managers and workers. This paper will discuss if these scientific management principles are outdated in the study of organizations. I will present the principles and explain their relevance in current organizations. The rule of thumb is a procedure that developed from experience and common sense. It totally ignores scientific knowledge. Taylor argued that for an organization to become more efficient managers had to develop a science of work that is cultivating methods based on a scientific study of those tasks. Morgan (2006) asserts that this was done to determine the most efficient way of doing work. The scientific method would therefore simplify worker s tasks in detail and specify the amount of work needed to do the task and the necessary time to finish that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How could one not be interested in learning more about the flattened animals that litter our roads? I was certainly intrigued by the idea that the study of these very dead animals actually exists. This book contains all sorts of information about flattened fauna such as how to study it, where to study it, why flattened fauna exists, details about the most popular and or dangerous fauna, and of course why it is studied in the first place. The following paragraphs will give a summary of the book Flattened Fauna, what to expect of the book, and how the book relates to furthering ones knowledge of Biology. The author states that this book is supposed to encourage the appreciation and study of road fauna. The author even mentions that a trip of one thousand miles presents the opportunity to see, identify, and possibly enjoy four hundred to four thousand animals. The author encourages the reader to think of the road as a habitat. Most animal habitats such as forests, lakes, marshes, and such have been apart of the world for millions of years, and the new roads conveniently run through these habitats. These new roads and highways are a relatively new part of these animals natural habitat, but the animals still include these roads as a part of their traditional habitat. • 27. Industrial relations ideologies Introduction A frame of reference is not a philosophical concept. It refers to one s worldview and the evaluation or judgement of one s observations. One s frame of reference coincides with one s behaviour and the consequences thereof. Therefore, a frame of reference is fixed but one needs to be sensitive and accept individual differences in frames of reference. This paper aims to address the frame of reference of Pick n Pay s chairman and joint managing director, Mr Raymond Ackerman. The arguments presented in this paper are my own with a theoretical basis from the work of Bluen (1987). My interpretation of Mr Ackerman s frame of reference will be presented in relation to the organisation, conflict, collective bargaining and trade... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reiterates the notion of balance of power. Collective bargaining The ability for positions to reach a consensus is reached through collective bargaining. Bluen (1987) infers that the pluralist frame of reference does not seek to remove conflict but to manage it. Mr Ackerman acknowledged the existence of conflict and tried to manage it by sending his negotiating team to resolve the conflict and end the strike. Mr Ackerman has a pluralist view because he believes the issue should have been resolved during negotiations. He even went as far as awarding greater bargaining flexibility to the negotiating team. The mere fact that Mr Ackerman was so determined to resolve the conflict though means of collective bargaining should eliminate the likelihood of a unitary frame of reference. Collective bargaining, an equitable balance of power, and essentially the aim to compromise confirm that Mr Ackerman holds a pluralist view on industrial relations. Mr Ackerman fought to reach a consensus for personal and economic reasons. The breakthrough to reach a consensus was achieved after he delivered his speech. He appealed to the opposing union members by focusing on personal matters. This led to the agreement of a negotiation. Mr Ackerman considered going up on his agreement and the union considered going down on theirs. No suppression or unilateral decision making occurred. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Delayed-Onset DOMS INTRODUCTION Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is muscle soreness secondary to exercise, characterized by increasing pain or discomfort during subsequent 24 72 hours, and subsiding within few days (Elsevier 2009). This was often associated with athletes and coaches where they usually lead to detrimental to their performance and recovery after activities. Although its physiological mechanism has not yet determine, it may relate to primary mechanical damage that may happen to muscle cells during exercise. • 29. Why Is A Starfish So Slow But Never Has Tiny Particles... Why is a starfish so slow but never has tiny particles like algae and barnicles on it? The answer is pedicellariae. Pedicellariae are the spikes on starfish. They engulf algae and barnicles before they can attach to the starfish. We re designing a boat paint that is able to mimic the functions of pedicellariae. Boatpaint has been affecting aquatic habitats for thousands of years and counting. Scientists have tried changing the ingredients but no matter what they try, species of animals have been harmed. Many of us just leave the dirty work of choosing bottom paint for our vessel to our local boat repair yard. This is a good choice, since most yards know just what type of paint is best. We should be aware of available choices and what bottom paints are environmentally friendly. This would create a non harmful way of keeping your boat bottom in good shape. The year 2011 may be remembered as the year when sailors started thinking differently about copper. After centuries of relying on toxic metals to ward off growth on the bottoms of boats, sailors are awakening to a new era of environmental consequences, greater regulation, and breakthroughs in science and paint technology. Generally, antifouling paints contain at least one biocide, an ingredient capable of poisoning marine life that would cling to the hull, but getting these toxins to work usually requires either friction or a chemical reaction. • 31. Domination Metaphor And The Boeing Case Introduction The purpose of this memo is to explain the domination metaphor and the Boeing case while relating the two and providing a recommendation for moving forward. The domination metaphor is important to discuss because it explores the idea that some organizations are instruments of domination that impose their will on others to continue their advancement through exploitation. I will be discussing the key points of the domination metaphor, the Boeing case and the necessary OD interventions that address the case in relation to the metaphor. Domination Metaphor: The organism metaphor views organizations as instruments of domination. Morgan says that organizations often have a negative impact on our world (Morgan, 2006, p. 293). The idea of looking at organizations as instruments of domination brings attention to issues such as environmental and social responsibilities of organizations. The metaphor brings up environmental issues by accusing organizations of poisoning the general public through food additives and the pollution of our environment, including our water system. Max Weber identified three types of social domination. People can be dominated through charisma, through tradition (custom), and through rational legal (rules and laws). (Morgan, 2006, p. 291) Within this metaphor, profits are always considered over people while people are exploited or used to better the modern slave driver efficiency (Morgan, 2006, p. 296). Theme 2 Like the first theme of determination and pride in work, another similar theme that takes a different outlook on the same events is the idea of if sacrifice is really worth it at the end. As shown in the last analysis, Professor Lidenbrock is very dedicated to his work as a scientist and perhaps maybe a little too dedicated and too involved. He is also believed to have been born with a different name, and his birthday is unknown because he was born out of wedlock. Despite this, his father made sure he had a good education by sending him to a prestigious Latin school when he was 9 years old. However, when Erasmus s parents died, he was sent to live with guardians who strongly believed that he should become a Monk. During this time, Erasmus gained a personal relationship with God but was opposed to the strict rules and teachings of the school. • 46. Quality Of Quality And Safety Managing quality and safety is vital in order to deliver effective healthcare today. Unfortunately, very little is known about the quality of care due to the fact that there are a variety of definitions used for the term quality (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). This paper will discuss quality management in this country s healthcare system, some approaches used for quality improvement, as well as the perspectives of quality healthcare from healthcare professionals and clients. Defining Quality Healthcare The concept of quality assurance has been around a while, however, the major urge to improve it has only been around the past few years. According to Stanhope Lancaster (2014), quality assurance (QA) is one of the evaluative steps in the nursing process. It uses analytic methods to monitor and detect errors in client standards of safety and care. Another evaluative step in the nursing process is quality improvement (QI). QI evaluates evidence based practice and analyzed information in order to make improvements in quality healthcare. Total quality management (TQM) is a philosophy that focuses on client satisfaction, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement (CQI). Outcomes of quality healthcare are improved due to TQM. Continuous quality improvement (CQI) can be described as an ongoing evolvement in healthcare quality contingent on exploring past deviations from the standard of care. This philosophy involves constant surveillance of all records and the implementation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Essay On Vivisection Imagine your pet spending an entire life in solidarity confinement where he or she is deprived of food and water, and is electrocuted and force fed chemicals from time to time. This is the life of animals in a laboratory. Live animal experimentation, also known as vivisection, is not only unethical, but also cruel and unnecessary. In the article Vivisection is Right, but it is Nasty and We must be Brave Enough to Admit This , Michael Hanlon claims vivisection is a moral necessity that without the use of animals in the laboratory, humans would not have modern medicine like antibiotics, analgesic, and cancer drugs (1). For example, Hanlon believes by sewing kittens eyelids together can aid researchers to study the effects of amblyopia in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Animal experiments are not a moral necessity to allow human to discover cures for disease, like cancer or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). In fact, the genetic composition of animals is completely different from human, and there might be catastrophic results if a medication is given to a human being, even if the medication is tested safe in animals. In other words, animals exhibit a different genetic and physiology than human beings and when drugs, like HIV vaccines, are tested on animals the effect of the medication may translate differently in the human body. For instance, Hanlon gives an example of animal experimentation in which the Cardiff University done by sewing thirty one kittens eyelids shut to study the effects of lazy eye in children (1). However, the British Union of the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) argues against Hanlon s claim that cat brains and cat vision are fundamentally different to human and it is hard to see how anything useful can be gained by the research (Hanlon 1), and experiments like sewing kittens eyelids together to study amblyopia have been done many years ago, and yet no cure has been found (Hanlon 1). Hanlon claim that many surgical procedures would be impossible without operating on animals in the laboratory, and fears that without animal experimentation, people would be used as guinea pigs instead (2). By focusing on surgical procedures done on animals, Hanlon overlooks the deeper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Examples Of Moral Dilemmas 2. What are values and norms and what is a moral dilemma? To answer this question I will divide the question in three parts. Starting with what values are. Values are an absolut or relative and ethic value of a person. Values can be defined as a wide preference for specific actions. The assumption of those can be a basic form for ethic handling. A Valuesystem is a set of consistense values and measures. A principale value is a fundamental on which values and measures of integrity are based. Some values are physiologically determined and used usually for avoiding fysical pain or for looking for fun. Other values are subjective, they are different for every individu or for different religions. These values are more based on religion and their beliefs. Different values are ethical /moral vales, ideological values, social values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then the last part of this question, moral dilemmas. But what is a Moral dilemma?. A Moral Dilemma is that two well known cases conflict with eachother. In each case you have moral reasons to do each of the two actions, but it is not possible to do both. This is what you call moral dilemmas. What is really a common factor for moral dilemmas is, is that it is kind of required to do both actions, in this situation you can choose one of them but you can t do both, so you start feeling that you failed, because both actions are important for you. No matter which one you will choose you always have the feeling that you failed or did something wrong. So to recap this all a Moral Dillema is a Dillema between two factors/choices that are both important to you and whatever you choose you will always think you made the wrong choice. 3.What Values and Norms does the chosen organisation ... • 49. Narrative Voice of Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass The tone established in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is unusual in that from the beginning to the end the focus has been shifted. In the beginning of the narrative Douglass seems to fulfill every stereotypical slavery theme. He is a young black slave who at first cannot read and is very naГЇve in understanding his situation. As a child put into slavery Douglass does not have the knowledge to know about his surroundings and the world outside of slavery. In Douglass narrative the tone is first set as that of an observer, however finishing with his own personal accounts. When first introduced to Douglass and his story, we find him to be a young slave boy filled with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Douglass states before narrating any of the peculiar circumstances, I deem it proper to make known my intention not to state all the facts connected with the transaction. In doing so Douglass assumed the narrative would lose the interest of its readers, however the mere thought of a slave man risking his life for a chance to freedom is able to recapture the interest of any facts left out. In the conclusion of the narrative Frederick Douglass contemplates escaping, weighing it against the idea of leaving all of his friends. Douglass says, I had a good number of warm hearted friends in Baltimore, friends that I loved almost as I did my life, and the thought of being separated from them forever was painful beyond expression. Such a personal tone and accounts make the reader truly see the change Douglass has gone through since the beginning of the narrative. The language difference from the beginning up until the conclusion can be based solely on spirit and education. From the start Douglass did not know much about anything and spoke like he should have, from a child s view. This includes a child s inquisitiveness, demonstrated by his speaking of others more than himself. As he grows and matures, and is even given the gift of an education the language changes dramatically to that of an educated man. Speaking in an intellectual manner Douglass sees that his ability to read and write has truly set him free. From the tone of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Mental Illness In The Bell Jar Sylvia Plath wrote a captivating novel following a young girl through her battle with mental illness. In her novel, Plath illustrated the extent of prejudice which society exhibited towards people with metal illness in the 1950 s. Like Plath, Susanna Kaysen wrote about the effect of mental illness on the patient s lives. Kaysen also revealed how in the 1950 s and 1960 s, the unwillingness of society to come to terms with the prevalence of mental illness affected the girls diagnosed. Thus Plath and Kaysen brought to light the issues surrounding mental illness and society s negative views towards those who suffer from psychological issues. While Plath delivers her message in the form of an entertaining novel, Kaysen tells her story through a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her first journal entry Kaysen tells how the decision for her to go to McLean Hospital was based on a twenty minute conversation with a psychiatrist. Kaysen had been picking at her acne and been acting out in ways which would not be considered unusual for teens today, but at the time it was a sufficient excuse for commitment to an institution. In an interview, Kaysen further develops the idea that her illness was influenced by outside factors saying, [Her] retrospective account of her confinement at McLean Hospital makes a cultural intervention that challenges the notion that mental illness is rooted solely in the individual. (Kaysan, 18). Being surrounded by girls with serious illnesses forced Kaysen to assume the role of a girl with a real mental illness. Society forced her to find something wrong with herself in an attempt to fit in. Kaysen questions what mental illness truly is. She asks, Was everybody seeing this stuff and acting as though they weren t? Was insanity just a matter of dropping the act? (Kaysen 41). Because Kaysen was labeled as being mentally ill although she was not, it became hard for her to tell what truly pronounced someone as mentally ill. Was everyone slightly crazy or were just some better at hiding it then others? Living in such an uptight society, people had no choice but to put on an act of perfection.
