Gateways To Art Analysis
The figure 1.120 on page 123 of Gateways to Art depicts a 3 dimensional piece of art called
Monogram. Inside the work includes mixed media with taxidermy goat, rubber tire, and a tennis ball.
The work was done by Robert Rauschenberg from Sweden. There is strong emphasis on the goat,
making it the focal point of the mass. The installation of the tire is wrapped around the goat s torso,
while the goat is mounted onto the center of the wood frame. The size of the work is monumental
compared to other works of art. The subordination of the painted half of the work prevents the viewer
from looking at the plain pieces of wood. The span of the mount stretches diagonally across the frame.
The addition of red paint brings a sense of luminosity to the work. There are illuminated letters printed
of the wood pieces that draws attention to the left half of the piece. The text says Rauschenberg
created the work as a symbol of himself as a rebel and outcast. The goat relates to a religious
perspective as goats used to be offered as a sacrifice by Christians to God. This work was so odd at the
time because it was not a sculpture or painting, making it unique in its own way. The figure 1.81 ...

piece (Monogram) presents a feeling of admiration while the three dimensional piece (Twilight in the
Wilderness) presents a feeling of rebellion. Monogram required a lot of space because it has the bigger
mass. Twilight in the Wilderness is just an oil on canvas so it did not require the same volume. The
overall texture was different because of the material used. Although both presented a clear focal point,
the objects were different. The works were similar in the fact that they were both narratives. They both
revealed the character of the artist which could also connect with certain viewers from a similar

Police Corruption In The Law Enforcement Department
In the United States of America, corruption in the law enforcement department are continuing to be a
major problem in the community. Some police officers are using their authority to attain profit and
pleasure from resident, while other good police are continuing to do what s right. Police corruption
can happen anywhere, but major cities are dealing with corruptions such as Los Angeles, New York
City, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. For example, six Philadelphia law enforcement officers were
arrested for kidnapping a drug suspect and threating to cause harm to his family, which led to holding
the suspect over the balcony railing from a 18th floor building (Assefa, 2014). Their misconduct and
unethical leadership became one of the worse situations

Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero s Journey from Revenge
to Reconciliation
The Tempest opens on a ship at sea caught in a tempestuous storm . This setting would immediately
suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be familiar with
other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example, Macbeth and King
Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would further reinforce the
audience s sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is illustrated when he cries A plague upon
this howling and the terror of the passengers down below can be heard as they cry Mercy on us! ...

This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a story
of revenge and evil.
In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the
time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as
many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth,
superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero
establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her father
has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay
them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea
introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for
revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings
and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda s language contains much dark
imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky would pour down stinking
pitch has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm.
Prospero s expositional speech, which begins on line 36 in Scene II,

Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer
Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in particular
for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the horrible secrets
his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result. Straying away from
mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to separate the two sides of
his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text introduces the idea of human
duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality, although important, is only one
aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An example of this intrigue is the role of
women or rather the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his character
can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy
operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this
text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is
about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they
attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract
from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important
role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself even claimed to have
difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem extends to some of his
other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison to the importance of the
male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity and also with men s typical
perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the idea of how men underestimate
women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this
underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to
explain this phenomenon. Nonetheless, some

Health Vocation Course Analysis
Introduction
The health vocation that was chosen was a double degree in Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor
Midwifery. This was chosen because I highly enjoy helping people and this course offers both nursing
and midwifery so my career options is still left open. What originally made me decide to choose this
course was my mum would come from home from her job as the hospital administrator and tell me
stories about the nurses and my auntie would tell me about the babies ward. The stories made me want
to work with people and babies. This is the main contributor to the choosing of the course but also just

Soma And Agni Essay
Since the earlier mythological times, Soma has always been taken as a plant whose extracts were used
as a sacred intoxicating drink of the gods. But according to the Vedas it is a creator, and aids in
sustenance of a living being. It takes various forms and sizes to keep the life cycle in motion. Since
recent past researches Soma has becomes a string for the Vedic connections across different

Agni is within Soma , and Soma rises after Agni for its sustenance. As said above, Soma is existent in
all these regions, similarly, Agni pervades all the three regions in forms of Aditya (sun), Vidyut

couples with Agni (the fire principle). It is this merging of Soma and Agni that results in the formation
of the rains in turn. Agni Soma along with Vayu make the tri dosha (Humours) of Ayurveda which

combination which burns till there is equilibrium of agni (flame) and Soma (oil). Disturbance in any

process governed by the proper combination of agni and Soma and hence there is a mention of
mythical Soma sacrifice ritual. Sacrificial fire is the symbol of digestive fire to which Soma is offered

story, Odour of Chrysanthemums, Elizabeth, the mother of two, is facing a battle conflicting if she
loves her husband or not. She is trying to be strong for her family and hold them together, because she
feels like that is her job as a mother. Elizabeth has a mindset that her husband is out drinking and
spending his spare time at unnecessary places, as he has before, instead of spending time with his
family. Women overanalyze most situations but usually have a reason to. Women want the best for

a healthy marriage works. Elizabeth realizes she never even loved her husband and was only attracted
to the lust when D.H. Lawrence says, There had been nothing between them, and yet they had come

Hospice Care Description of the Organization
Care designed to give supportive care to people in the final phase of a terminal illness and focus on
comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. The goal is to enable patients to be comfortable and free
of pain, so that they live each day as fully as possible. Aggressive methods of pain control may be
used. Hospice programs generally are home based, but they sometimes provide services away from
home in freestanding facilities, in nursing homes, or within hospitals. The philosophy of hospice is to

Reason I Chose this Agency
Hospice care differs from other forms of medical care in that when the patient is dying, hospice works
hard to relieve needless suffering. Normally, a patient is approved for hospice care if his or her life
expectancy is 6 months or less. Hospice workers treat the person, rather than the disease. They aren t
trying to cure a disease, but rather, they are trying to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
Family and friends are encouraged to gather round and engage with the hospice patient. Many people
have the misconception that the dying want to be left alone, but why would they want to be
abandoned? Hospice is good for families, because they educate them on the dying process. Hospice
care can be rendered in the family home, a nursing home, or in a hospital. Normally the majority of
care is given by the family in the family home, or by nursing staff in a nursing home or hospital;
however there are also private in house hospice facilities for those that may not have the family
support. In the home, nursing home and hospitals the hospice workers come at specified times to work
with the dying patient. They spend take vital signs, offer palliative care, and also offer support for
family members. If you were to be admitted to hospice care you would find a great team of doctors,
nurses, social workers, counselors, home healthcare assistants,

The White Man s Burden Analysis
Within the following are my analysis of both McKinley s Philippines speech and Rudyard Kipling s
poem The White Man s Burden . I have provided my interpretations of both sources as well as my
opinions of their meanings and effect on us as a nation and society. Both sources provided for this
assignment provided an insight to the social and political agenda s to capitalize the imperialistic
aspirations and stamp the label of an Empire to the rest of the world. Late 1800 American s were
sharply divided whether to be annexationists or anti annexationists, but also acknowledged the equally
powerful forces of racism, nationalism, and more importantly commercialism, that persuaded the
United States actions. Nevertheless, history has showed us that without the imperialistic mindset the

The Machine Stops, By Em Forster
In this essay I will discuss EM Forster s short story The Machine Stops, which is a cautionary tale
about technological progress and its impact on various aspects of human behavior, including isolation
and solitude, risk avoidance and contact avoidance, communication and social connections, and the
nature of the residents of the Machine s relationship with knowledge. I will specifically touch on all of
these ideas and how they connect with one another in that they are all products of our desire for
comfort, but inevitably lead to disconnection and the end of humanity. Additionally, I will discuss the
prescience of the short story in relation to the present day, where technological advancement and

When Vashti and Kuno are talking to each other through the machine, Vashti is unable to tell the
subtleties of Kuno s expressions. The Machine did not transmit nuances of expression. It only gave a
general idea of people an idea that was good enough for all practical purposes (3). Later, Forster
writes, Something good enough had long since been accepted by our race (3). Forster is making a
statement that although, in the world of the Machine, there is great technological advancement, the use
of technology to communicate will never match the nuance of face to face communication. Further,
they have accepted that the communication through technology is good enough, which leads one to
conclude that the lack of nuance in this type of communication is met with compliance. It is important
to note that Kuno is notably not content with communication through the Machine. He says, I want to
speak to you not through the wearisome Machine and I hear something like you through this
telephone, but I do not hear you...pay me a visit, so that we can meet face to face (2). The Kuno
character is Forster s means of discussing the value of face to face communication. Communication

Salinger s The Catcher Of The Rye
The Underlying Literary Movements in The Catcher in the Rye Everybody has their problems.
Everyone has their downsides, their pitfalls, their quirks. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the
novel The Catcher in the Rye (written by J.D. Salinger), is definitely worse than most people. The
book is a flashback in which Holden reflects upon is flunking out of four private high schools. If this
wasn t enough, after his most recent expulsion from Pencey Prep, you d expect a person to try and
improve his life; Holden is the exception to this generalization. The entire book focuses on his
downward spiral towards depression as he reconciles with his past. Throughout the story, we see
Holden adopt a variety of personas as he contemplates the past, exhibiting ideals that reflect moments
in American literature. Thus, we see him grow as a person and review ideals as Holden tries to gain a
sense of who he is and what the next steps he needs to take to forward his life. A prime example of
Holden s emulation of literary ideals comes when the reader is given the ultimatum of whether Holden
is truly a psychotic person or if there is deeper meaning towards his slow slip into psychosis. The
moment goes in depth on the postmodernism theme when Holden describes to his sister his beliefs
towards the poem Comin Thro the Rye. Through his eyes, he imagines a field of rye; thousands of
kids playing in acres upon acres of rye and no supervision. Now take that field and add a cliff severing

Judaism Religion
Judaism is a religion that goes back many centuries. The earliest know account of this religion dates
around 2000 B.C.E. This is the approximate time a man named Abraham made a covenant with God
that also extended to his descendants. It was not until the first century C.E. that classical Judaism
came into being. Until that time these people were called Israelites. Besides Abraham, the main
figures in Judaism are Isaac, Jacob and the prophet Moses. Still, followers of Judaism only believe in
one true god and do not worship anyone or anything else. They even avoid spelling the word God to
not risk disrespecting His name. Unlike other religions, much of Judaism is very general and open to
interpretation. Most of Jewish teaching focuses on relationships

The Autobiography Of An Former Colored Man By James Weldon...
The Autobiography of an Ex Colored Man, James Weldon Johnson
James Weldon Johnson s novel The Autobiography of an Ex Colored Man was first published in 1912.
This novel is one of the highly celebrated works during the Harlem Renaissance although it was
published prior in 1912. Johnson graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 1894. He was appointed
by President Theodore Roosevelt as United States consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua. He also was
highly involved in the Harlem Renaissance with his own writings and support for others work.
Johnson was a member of and first black executive officer in the NAACP. The Autobiography of an
Ex Colored Man is a fictional novel dealing with racial identity and the idea of passing into white
society. The Autobiography of an Ex Colored Man depicts the life and travels of an unnamed narrator
of mixed race. The narrator s physical appearance is that of a white man though because of his mother
s African American classification he would also be considered an African American man. He is the
offspring of what is suggested to be a wealthy white southerner and his mulatto or mixed race mother.
The narrator is raised in the north in a somewhat privileged atmosphere compared to the majority of
African American people of the time. During his childhood he fails to recognize his racial identity as
being that of an African American boy until he is asked to sit down by the principal while all the white
kids were asked to stand up. Not long

A Thousand Splendid Suns Character Analysis
In A Thousand Splendid Suns and First They Killed My Father, we find the three female characters of
Laila and Mariam, and Loung, respectively, in harrowing and dangerous political atmospheres. Both
of the political atmospheres described in these two books expose these characters to harsh realities of
war, abuse, starvation, and oppression; these characters must also come to terms with a rising body
count around them. From Mariam s perspective, we hear that there was looting, murder, and,
increasingly, rape, which was used to intimidate civilians and reward militiamen (Hosseini 253).
Despite these despotic circumstances, and perhaps in spite of the physical toll they take, the three
female characters of these books exhibit extraordinary perseverance as a result of their tumultuous
surroundings.
The most prevalent and threatening theme that each character experiences first hand, as a result of the
dangerous political atmospheres they are exposed to, is starvation; we slowly see each character
physically diminished throughout their stories. Loung describes vividly to readers, I can count every
rib in my rib cage, but my stomach protrudes outward, bloated like a ball between my chest and hips
(Ung 83). Similarly, Mariam recounts how starvation had ravaged Laila s daughter s body: Aziza s
ribs began to push through the skin, and the fat from her cheeks vanished. Her calves thinned, and her
complexion turned the color of weak tea. When Mariam picked her up, she could feel her

Essay on Shady Trail Case Study
Executive Summary After analyzing the numbers and the market and property factors involved with
Shady Trail, it is my opinion that this property is a reasonable one to invest in. It meets the criteria we
had previously set forth in choosing an investment property as both the IRR and the current cash flows
are in excess of the minimum we mandated. These numbers require that the assumptions we use in
market rent, cap rate in 2003, vacancy rate, and our plans to sell the investment after 5 years all hold.
If one of these assumptions doesn t hold and the 5 year projection is below expectations, it can still be
remedied by holding the asset for a longer time period. Assumptions/Issues The principal issue in the

Financial Analysis Using the tables (shown below and in Exhibit 1) to calculate cash flow before
financing and net proceeds from sale, a DCF method was used to arrive at a NPV of $216,789 and
IRR of 13.3% for a 5 year holding period at assumed vacancy of 5% (Exhibit 1). As mentioned earlier,
this IRR exceeds the 12.5% initially set out, and therefore seems like a feasible project. Using a higher
vacancy rate of 7%, however, lowers the IRR to a point that is no longer feasible. If holding all else
same, a vacancy of 7% on the building yields a NPV of $122,420 and an IRR of 11.47% (please see
table below and Exhibit 2). This IRR does not meet the minimum required and therefore the
assumption of vacancy rates staying at 5% is paramount to our analysis. This aspect of the analysis is
considerably risky as an assumed vacancy rate does not necessarily yield a guaranteed rate. If vacancy
happens to rise, then the valuation of the property is far different than what was originally envisioned.

The Lack of Free Speech in the Military
As a member of the United States military, there are times that the very freedoms that are being
defended are not extended to those sailors and soldiers that are in charge of that task. One of those
freedoms is freedom of speech. As a veteran of the United States Navy, I find the limitation of speech
for a member of the military to be contradictory at best. The very fact that members of the armed
forces cannot speak freely about government officials, as well as government issues that affect their
lives, seems to be controversial because it limits one of the freedoms these sailors and soldiers have
vowed to protect. To oppose the right of free speech of any member of the military takes away from
the importance of the job they do. It has been argued that a member of the military should be mindful
of whom they work for and the chain of command that orders come from, and that any display of
dissatisfaction can be seen as disobedience or even treason.
I support members of the military being able to voice their thoughts on issues that impact their lives,
as well as the lives of their families. There are a few reasons why I support this. Simply put, as
Americans they have the right of freedom of speech. Given the responsibilities of these sailors and
soldiers in their day to day jobs, they should be entrusted to know what to say and what not to say.
Most people take for granted the right to speak one s mind, right or wrong, and have nearly no
ramifications for doing so. When one

Parliament passes the Tea Act states Patriot leader Samuel Adams organized the so called Boston Tea
Party with about 60 members of the radically anti British Sons of Liberty. This group of about 60
members dressed up as Mohawk Indians and dumped the tea into the Boston Harbor on December 16,
1773, which nearly amounts to a $4,000,000 loss in modern value. The colonists committed this act
thinking that the British Parliament would back down, but it did the exact opposite. In response to the
Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament enacted the Coercive Acts, known to the colonists as the
Intolerable Acts, on March 28, 1774. The Coercive Acts was a series of four acts: The Boston Port
Act, The Massachusetts Government Act, The Administration of Justice Act, and The Quartering Act.
In addition to those four acts, a fifth act known as The Quebec Act was added to the Coercive Acts.
The article British Parliament adopts the Coercive Acts by History describes each act

A Comparison Of The World Trade Center Attack In 1993 And...
The first World Trade Center Attack in 1993 and the Boston Marathon Attack in 2013 are two
significant attacks that share some similarities and difference. Although horrific, both attacks provide
useful information to combat terrorism in the future. In a way, the World Trade Center Attack
influenced the Boston Marathon Attack, and there is even an indirect link between the two attacks.
Observing how the occurrences resembled one another, and interpreting the way technology has
changed will provide some insight.
First, the World Trade Center Attack was perpetrated by the terrorist organization Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda
is a notorious, organized, and established group of radical Islamists. Al Qaeda has influenced
numerous other terrorist organizations in countries around the world. They have access to massive
resources, regarding both people, technology, know how, and weapons. Al Qaeda has been on the
intelligence radar for many years.
In contrast, the two subjects that committed the Boston Marathon Attack, later identified as the
Tsarnaev brothers, were not formally affiliated with any terrorist organization. They were self funded,
and their resources were limited. They were also relatively unknown to United States Intelligence,
although Russian Intelligence did have information that the brothers were potentially involved in
terrorist activity. The brothers were young immigrants with little to no criminal backgrounds or
experience.
Further, there are links in the attacks that

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Review: Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over the
age of 50. Every ten years after the age of 50 the prevalence of this disease increases exponentially.
Many different factors contribute to the development of AMD including genetic, environment, and
metabolic functions. Aside from smoking, abnormal blood pressure, and an unhealthy diet low in
fruits and vegetables, many more studies are concluding that similar inflammatory and oxidative
processes seen in other age related diseases are also playing a key role in the development of AMD.
This disease affects the central areas of the retina and choroid. In return central vision is impaired
while peripheral vision is usually not lost. AMD is seen in two different forms, the earlier
nonneovascular (dry) type and the more advanced neovascular (wet) type. Each form has its own
specific pathology and unique characteristics that set them apart. Fatty, protein deposits called drusens
may be the key risk factor in understanding dry AMD pathology, progression, and treatment. Once the
more advanced wet AMD is diagnosed, pathology and treatment are targeted around the formation and
destruction of abnormal blood vessels, characteristic of the wet AMD eye. The increasing prevalence
of AMD has influenced more investigation into what factors can be modulated to prevent the onset or
to stop the progression of AMD. This text will discuss the pathology of drusens and the role of
inflammation and

The Great Old Ones
When you chose to represent each of your albums on individual novellas from one of the most
renowned horror authors in the world, there can hardly be a short supply of thematic inspiration.
Numerous bands have created concept albums based around their own ideas, or pen songs that take
insight from creative writing, but few bands will dedicate the entire span of an album to an existing
piece of literature.
H.P. Lovecraft is the lifeblood of France s ambient black metal quintet, The Great Old Ones. His
grotesque imagery in his vivid fictional recounting goes hand in hand with the bleak grandeur that The
Great Old Ones conjures, which simultaneously takes their audience on a journey through the band s
expansive soundscapes and Lovecraft s tangible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy is very much a continuation of the band s past two albums, only with
increased theatrics and wild execution. The guitars are solely focused on creating a grandiose
atmosphere but predominantly rely on walls of sound and swerving rhythms; the halfway point of The
Ritual inducing a heavy Emperor influence. The technique may sound one dimensional but it s what
imagery is being portrayed by the guitars that command your attention, not how it is portrayed.
Finally, a special mention has to go to Léo Isnard s pummelling drumming, which is nothing short of
breathtaking throughout this accursed plot.
The Great Old Ones have once again breathed further life into the fictional world of H.P Lovecraft as
well as mastering their chosen aesthetic of atmospheric black metal. Moreover, their narration of The
Shadow over Innsmouth vividly assures everyone, just like the novel once did, that humanity is
doomed and the Esoteric Order of Dagon will be restored to its inescapable

Composition As A Write Of Passage By Nathalie Singh-Corcoran
Relatability vs. Evidence
Composition 1, also known as English 101 or FYC (First Year Composition) is an entry level course
taken by a majority of college students to introduce them to college level reading and writing. FYC is
a prerequisite course at many colleges and universities and therefore must be taken before students can
enter into courses specific to their major. Though FYC serves as a bridge to college level reading and
writing many students and even some compositionists (those who teach writing in a college or
university) do not see the relevancy of the course and instead view FYC as a course with very little
applicability within the majors and future careers of college students. Others, including Nathalie Singh
Corcoran, believe FYC is a crucial prerequisite course that does teach skills crucial to the futures and
lives of college students. In her essay, Composition as a Write of Passage, Nathalie Singh Corcoran
first, speaks to the purpose and overall goals of an FYC course before explaining how the skills
learned in FYC can actually be applied to the majors and future careers of college students. From the
very beginning of her article, Singh Corcoran establishes a strong foundation from which she can
reach her main audience, but, she fails to support her main points in the best possible way by a very
sparse use of non anecdotal or personal experience based evidence.
Above all, Singh Corcoran is highly successful in reaching her main audience, college

The Red Army
The Red Army Right after the October 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, an army was established and took
the official name of Workers and Peasants Red Army (It was only renamed Soviet Army in 1946). The
Red army was absolutely essential for the Communists to stop several coalition armies attacking the
new Communist regime. During WW I, a huge Imperial Russian army (estimated at 19 million
soldiers and officers representing over 15% of the Russian population) had been fighting Germany on
the Eastern front with little success. Under equipped, poorly trained and supervised, it had lost close to
9 million soldiers through desertions, deaths, wounded or prisoners. In July 1918, upon Lenin s order,
the Romanov Imperial family was assassinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These squads had instructions to shoot retreating soldiers or possible deserters (note that such squads
had been in history already deployed within the Roman Empire conquests as well as in Napoleonic
battles). To ensure political compliance with Bolsheviks principles, each battalion had at his helm a
Political Commissar in charge not only of educating the troops, but also holding the responsibility to
counter sign all decisions from high level officers. By October 1919, all three White armies (vastly
outnumbered by the Red army troops) had been defeated. One could say that Trotsky saved the Soviet
regime from falling into oblivion. Another primary element of the Red army dominance is most
probably the effective use of well crafted posters. These did impress by and large naive illiterate
peasants soldiers trusting the new Bolshevik regime would bring them a better future. We should not
forget that peasants were deeply religious and used to worship God and his Saints praying in front of
colourful icons. In a sense, through well crafted posters, Bolsheviks used successfully this Russian
cultural attribute to win commitment from the peasant soldiers

St Aquinas And Humanism
While we live in a world that idolizes popstars and political figures, we often forget about the men that
made our self expression possible. Humanism is defined as a philosophy that usually rejects
supernaturalism and stresses an individual s dignity and worth and capacity for self realization through
reason (Humanism). St. Francis and St. Aquinas were both key figures in the beginning of this
movement. Instead of reflecting on the holy they decided to look inward and also outward at the world
that surrounded them. St. Aquinas, St. Francis, and the impacts they had on humanism were
monumental and are worthy of discussion.
St. Aquinas started off his life in a wealthy family, but was always expected to go into a monastery.
His first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These beliefs gained him a rather large group of followers in a relatively short amount of time. He
believed that he should lead a life of poverty and that self denial would gain him true freedom. He
contributed heavily to society of his time, and today, with his idea of mendicant or mobile preaching,
instead of the centralized and permanent monasteries of the time. He also had an impact on the art of
his time period (1200 s). His reflection on the crucifixion and humanity of Christ made the artwork
portray those subjects with more realism and vividness. The Canticle of the Brother Sun filled his
followers, the Little Brothers, with hope as it was written in their language and discussed his love of
nature.
St. Aquinas and St. Francis both contributed heavily on the secular humanism we have now, but each
did so with a holy motivation. Aquinas separated faith and reason and for this it is said that he gave
rise to humanism and atheism, however, he believed in the integration of the two not a separation. He
believed that faith brings a certainty that cannot be obtained by reason alone. Sola scriptura was one of
his main beliefs which is that salvation comes by grace and through faith (Thomas Aquinas). While St.
Aquinas influenced the writings of his time, St. Francis has a larger impact on the vernacular arts of
his time. The arts became more vivid and realistic and portrayed the

An Analysis on the Tragedy of Shylock from Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice
The merchant of Venice was believed to wrote between 1596 and 1598, and it is Shakespeare s most
controversial play. The theme of this play is praises kindheartedness, friendship and love, but also
reflects the contradiction between the bourgeoisie and the usurer in the early commercial capitalism
period. Although Shylock is the most prominent character in The Merchant of Venice, he takes part in
neither the beginning nor the ending of the play (Bevington:21). His vengeful struggle to acquire a

In the long river of history, the Jewish nation suffered a lot of disasters. They almost never get rid of
the oppression and slavery from their rival and enemies. The Medieval Europe was the world of
Christian, the Roman church claimed that Jews are spurned by God. Also, in the economic side, Jews
employment situation and own business were limited and excluded, and their property need to submit
to upper class or always deprived by dominator. Besides, the law stipulated that Jews cannot have the
right to possess land, and the rulers of Europe used all sorts of ways to pillage Jews wealth such as
increase taxes, limit employment figure, impose a fine without any reason, confiscate property and so
on. To obtain the living right, Jews were forced to choose to be usurer, the occupation which was the
most filthy, inferior and disreputable in Christian s eyes. Undoubtedly, the discrimination and

among people. Shylock is the representative of Jew while Antonio represents Christian, and from

Defining Religion:
In the 1950s and 1960s, many social scientists and historians in the United States argued that Western
societies were becoming secularized and that religion was fading out as an important part of public
and even private life. But they were wrong. Religion has not only retained its importance for most
people in the United States, it has become the subject of current public debate about national culture
and political practice.
In most Western traditions are two very common definitions of religion. One emphasizes in an
individual s beliefs and the other one is people emptions. The first defines religion as a set of shared
beliefs in sprits or gods. The second identifies religion in terms of a sentiments of awe and wonder
toward the unknown.
I propose to define religion as idea and practice that postulate reality away from that which is instantly
available to the senses. This board definition lets us to look at a very wide range of context of religion.
In each society people construct their world. They may have a shared set of beliefs in sprits and gods
and as a result fit directly into western definitions of religion. In

  • 2. Gateways To Art Analysis The figure 1.120 on page 123 of Gateways to Art depicts a 3 dimensional piece of art called Monogram. Inside the work includes mixed media with taxidermy goat, rubber tire, and a tennis ball. The work was done by Robert Rauschenberg from Sweden. There is strong emphasis on the goat, making it the focal point of the mass. The installation of the tire is wrapped around the goat s torso, while the goat is mounted onto the center of the wood frame. The size of the work is monumental compared to other works of art. The subordination of the painted half of the work prevents the viewer from looking at the plain pieces of wood. The span of the mount stretches diagonally across the frame. The addition of red paint brings a sense of luminosity to the work. There are illuminated letters printed of the wood pieces that draws attention to the left half of the piece. The text says Rauschenberg created the work as a symbol of himself as a rebel and outcast. The goat relates to a religious perspective as goats used to be offered as a sacrifice by Christians to God. Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero s Journey from Revenge to Reconciliation The Tempest opens on a ship at sea caught in a tempestuous storm . This setting would immediately suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be familiar with other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example, Macbeth and King Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would further reinforce the audience s sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is illustrated when he cries A plague upon this howling and the terror of the passengers down below can be heard as they cry Mercy on us! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a story of revenge and evil. In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth, superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her father has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda s language contains much dark imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky would pour down stinking pitch has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm. Prospero s expositional speech, which begins on line 36 in Scene II, ... • 5. Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in particular for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the horrible secrets his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result. Straying away from mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to separate the two sides of his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality, although important, is only one aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An example of this intrigue is the role of women or rather the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his character can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself even claimed to have difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem extends to some of his other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison to the importance of the male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity and also with men s typical perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the idea of how men underestimate women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to explain this phenomenon. The book is a flashback in which Holden reflects upon is flunking out of four private high schools. If this wasn t enough, after his most recent expulsion from Pencey Prep, you d expect a person to try and improve his life; Holden is the exception to this generalization. The entire book focuses on his downward spiral towards depression as he reconciles with his past. Throughout the story, we see Holden adopt a variety of personas as he contemplates the past, exhibiting ideals that reflect moments in American literature. Thus, we see him grow as a person and review ideals as Holden tries to gain a sense of who he is and what the next steps he needs to take to forward his life. A prime example of Holden s emulation of literary ideals comes when the reader is given the ultimatum of whether Holden is truly a psychotic person or if there is deeper meaning towards his slow slip into psychosis. The moment goes in depth on the postmodernism theme when Holden describes to his sister his beliefs towards the poem Comin Thro the Rye. A Thousand Splendid Suns Character Analysis In A Thousand Splendid Suns and First They Killed My Father, we find the three female characters of Laila and Mariam, and Loung, respectively, in harrowing and dangerous political atmospheres. Both of the political atmospheres described in these two books expose these characters to harsh realities of war, abuse, starvation, and oppression; these characters must also come to terms with a rising body count around them. From Mariam s perspective, we hear that there was looting, murder, and, increasingly, rape, which was used to intimidate civilians and reward militiamen (Hosseini 253). Despite these despotic circumstances, and perhaps in spite of the physical toll they take, the three female characters of these books exhibit extraordinary perseverance as a result of their tumultuous surroundings. The most prevalent and threatening theme that each character experiences first hand, as a result of the dangerous political atmospheres they are exposed to, is starvation; we slowly see each character physically diminished throughout their stories. It meets the criteria we had previously set forth in choosing an investment property as both the IRR and the current cash flows are in excess of the minimum we mandated. These numbers require that the assumptions we use in market rent, cap rate in 2003, vacancy rate, and our plans to sell the investment after 5 years all hold. If one of these assumptions doesn t hold and the 5 year projection is below expectations, it can still be remedied by holding the asset for a longer time period. As mentioned earlier, this IRR exceeds the 12.5% initially set out, and therefore seems like a feasible project. Using a higher vacancy rate of 7%, however, lowers the IRR to a point that is no longer feasible. If holding all else same, a vacancy of 7% on the building yields a NPV of $122,420 and an IRR of 11.47% (please see table below and Exhibit 2). This IRR does not meet the minimum required and therefore the assumption of vacancy rates staying at 5% is paramount to our analysis. This aspect of the analysis is considerably risky as an assumed vacancy rate does not necessarily yield a guaranteed rate. If vacancy happens to rise, then the valuation of the property is far different than what was originally envisioned. The Lack of Free Speech in the Military As a member of the United States military, there are times that the very freedoms that are being defended are not extended to those sailors and soldiers that are in charge of that task. One of those freedoms is freedom of speech. As a veteran of the United States Navy, I find the limitation of speech for a member of the military to be contradictory at best. The very fact that members of the armed forces cannot speak freely about government officials, as well as government issues that affect their lives, seems to be controversial because it limits one of the freedoms these sailors and soldiers have vowed to protect. To oppose the right of free speech of any member of the military takes away from the importance of the job they do. It has been argued that a member of the military should be mindful of whom they work for and the chain of command that orders come from, and that any display of dissatisfaction can be seen as disobedience or even treason. I support members of the military being able to voice their thoughts on issues that impact their lives, as well as the lives of their families. There are a few reasons why I support this. Simply put, as Americans they have the right of freedom of speech. Every ten years after the age of 50 the prevalence of this disease increases exponentially. Many different factors contribute to the development of AMD including genetic, environment, and metabolic functions. Aside from smoking, abnormal blood pressure, and an unhealthy diet low in fruits and vegetables, many more studies are concluding that similar inflammatory and oxidative processes seen in other age related diseases are also playing a key role in the development of AMD. This disease affects the central areas of the retina and choroid. In return central vision is impaired while peripheral vision is usually not lost. AMD is seen in two different forms, the earlier nonneovascular (dry) type and the more advanced neovascular (wet) type. Each form has its own specific pathology and unique characteristics that set them apart. Fatty, protein deposits called drusens may be the key risk factor in understanding dry AMD pathology, progression, and treatment. Once the more advanced wet AMD is diagnosed, pathology and treatment are targeted around the formation and destruction of abnormal blood vessels, characteristic of the wet AMD eye. The increasing prevalence of AMD has influenced more investigation into what factors can be modulated to prevent the onset or to stop the progression of AMD. This text will discuss the pathology of drusens and the role of inflammation and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. The Great Old Ones When you chose to represent each of your albums on individual novellas from one of the most renowned horror authors in the world, there can hardly be a short supply of thematic inspiration. Numerous bands have created concept albums based around their own ideas, or pen songs that take insight from creative writing, but few bands will dedicate the entire span of an album to an existing piece of literature. H.P. Lovecraft is the lifeblood of France s ambient black metal quintet, The Great Old Ones. His grotesque imagery in his vivid fictional recounting goes hand in hand with the bleak grandeur that The Great Old Ones conjures, which simultaneously takes their audience on a journey through the band s expansive soundscapes and Lovecraft s tangible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy is very much a continuation of the band s past two albums, only with increased theatrics and wild execution. The guitars are solely focused on creating a grandiose atmosphere but predominantly rely on walls of sound and swerving rhythms; the halfway point of The Ritual inducing a heavy Emperor influence. The technique may sound one dimensional but it s what imagery is being portrayed by the guitars that command your attention, not how it is portrayed. Finally, a special mention has to go to Léo Isnard s pummelling drumming, which is nothing short of breathtaking throughout this accursed plot. The Great Old Ones have once again breathed further life into the fictional world of H.P Lovecraft as well as mastering their chosen aesthetic of atmospheric black metal. Moreover, their narration of The Shadow over Innsmouth vividly assures everyone, just like the novel once did, that humanity is doomed and the Esoteric Order of Dagon will be restored to its inescapable ... • 26. Composition As A Write Of Passage By Nathalie Singh-Corcoran Relatability vs. Evidence Composition 1, also known as English 101 or FYC (First Year Composition) is an entry level course taken by a majority of college students to introduce them to college level reading and writing. FYC is a prerequisite course at many colleges and universities and therefore must be taken before students can enter into courses specific to their major. Though FYC serves as a bridge to college level reading and writing many students and even some compositionists (those who teach writing in a college or university) do not see the relevancy of the course and instead view FYC as a course with very little applicability within the majors and future careers of college students. Others, including Nathalie Singh Corcoran, believe FYC is a crucial prerequisite course that does teach skills crucial to the futures and lives of college students. In her essay, Composition as a Write of Passage, Nathalie Singh Corcoran first, speaks to the purpose and overall goals of an FYC course before explaining how the skills learned in FYC can actually be applied to the majors and future careers of college students. From the very beginning of her article, Singh Corcoran establishes a strong foundation from which she can reach her main audience, but, she fails to support her main points in the best possible way by a very sparse use of non anecdotal or personal experience based evidence. Above all, Singh Corcoran is highly successful in reaching her main audience, college ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. The Red Army The Red Army Right after the October 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, an army was established and took the official name of Workers and Peasants Red Army (It was only renamed Soviet Army in 1946). The Red army was absolutely essential for the Communists to stop several coalition armies attacking the new Communist regime. During WW I, a huge Imperial Russian army (estimated at 19 million soldiers and officers representing over 15% of the Russian population) had been fighting Germany on the Eastern front with little success. Under equipped, poorly trained and supervised, it had lost close to 9 million soldiers through desertions, deaths, wounded or prisoners. In July 1918, upon Lenin s order, the Romanov Imperial family was assassinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These squads had instructions to shoot retreating soldiers or possible deserters (note that such squads had been in history already deployed within the Roman Empire conquests as well as in Napoleonic battles). To ensure political compliance with Bolsheviks principles, each battalion had at his helm a Political Commissar in charge not only of educating the troops, but also holding the responsibility to counter sign all decisions from high level officers. By October 1919, all three White armies (vastly outnumbered by the Red army troops) had been defeated. One could say that Trotsky saved the Soviet regime from falling into oblivion. Another primary element of the Red army dominance is most probably the effective use of well crafted posters. These did impress by and large naive illiterate peasants soldiers trusting the new Bolshevik regime would bring them a better future. We should not forget that peasants were deeply religious and used to worship God and his Saints praying in front of colourful icons. In a sense, through well crafted posters, Bolsheviks used successfully this Russian cultural attribute to win commitment from the peasant soldiers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. St Aquinas And Humanism While we live in a world that idolizes popstars and political figures, we often forget about the men that made our self expression possible. Humanism is defined as a philosophy that usually rejects supernaturalism and stresses an individual s dignity and worth and capacity for self realization through reason (Humanism). St. Francis and St. Aquinas were both key figures in the beginning of this movement. Instead of reflecting on the holy they decided to look inward and also outward at the world that surrounded them. St. Aquinas, St. Francis, and the impacts they had on humanism were monumental and are worthy of discussion. St. Aquinas started off his life in a wealthy family, but was always expected to go into a monastery. His first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These beliefs gained him a rather large group of followers in a relatively short amount of time. He believed that he should lead a life of poverty and that self denial would gain him true freedom. He contributed heavily to society of his time, and today, with his idea of mendicant or mobile preaching, instead of the centralized and permanent monasteries of the time. He also had an impact on the art of his time period (1200 s). His reflection on the crucifixion and humanity of Christ made the artwork portray those subjects with more realism and vividness. The Canticle of the Brother Sun filled his followers, the Little Brothers, with hope as it was written in their language and discussed his love of nature. St. Aquinas and St. Francis both contributed heavily on the secular humanism we have now, but each did so with a holy motivation. Aquinas separated faith and reason and for this it is said that he gave rise to humanism and atheism, however, he believed in the integration of the two not a separation. He believed that faith brings a certainty that cannot be obtained by reason alone. Sola scriptura was one of his main beliefs which is that salvation comes by grace and through faith (Thomas Aquinas). While St. Aquinas influenced the writings of his time, St. Francis has a larger impact on the vernacular arts of his time. The arts became more vivid and realistic and portrayed the ... (J.DeLong Bas, 2001) Defining Religion: In the 1950s and 1960s, many social scientists and historians in the United States argued that Western societies were becoming secularized and that religion was fading out as an important part of public and even private life. But they were wrong. Religion has not only retained its importance for most people in the United States, it has become the subject of current public debate about national culture and political practice.
