the sculpture of The Lansdowne Athlete, by Lysippos, Rome 340 330 B.C. marble after a bronze
original, that I viewed at the LACMA. This sculpture is located in the left wing of Greek exhibition
Building, 3rd floor. I selected this sculpture as an example of an idealized body. Therefore, I will be
explaining the historical background of the sculpture and address why I think it would make a good
addition to our text. I will provide an analogy with other sculpture of idealized body from our
textbook chapter 12 on Mind and Body mainly. I will impart more information about the essence of
idealized human form as well as cultural ideals during this time period in Greece.
The Lansdowne Athlete at the LACMA is an example of a well developed ideal body and carefully
controlled proportions to all body parts. This sculpture is a Roman copy of an original by Lysippos
made in the 1st century. It is a marble statue of 75 inches in height. The figure is in the contrapposto
stance common of the style at the time and is taking a step forward. The figure still has integrity even
though it has a few missing parts. Its face, which is important, is more or less intact and the standing
upright with its impression of movement still visible. The missing arms, if they were restored would
not add much to the sculpture and the addition of these parts will not be worth the loss of authenticity.
Visiting LACMA for many years, I never noticed that ancient art has been disbanded, I was surprised!
The Greek and Roman sculptures now stand in the galleries of European art. The ancient statues and

After reading the article, Chronic Illness Impact and Interventions, Chapter 1 Chronicity, I have come
across multiple of topics that seems to be more of an issue, than of an individual having a chronic
illness and disability. As in the article, adults age, the healthcare system, the healthy predication of
individuals, quality of care, health disparities, culture, social influences, and financial cost is what is
causing the longevity of chronic illness and disability (Lubkin Larsen, 2009, pgs. 6 13). The age of
individuals is likely a cause of an individual developing an illness. Individuals at any age are possible
for contracting an illness at any point in time, but adults age 65 and older are the ones more likely to
have and/or develop a chronic illness (pg. 6). I believe at that time of age is when their health
condition is prone to change as certain things become limited for them. An adult s developing age
somewhat puts a strain on what physical and emotional condition they are at. The healthcare system

A large majority of Americans do not realize where the clothes they purchase are produced.
Unethically made goods are predominantly less expensive than goods made outside of sweatshops.
With the increase in investigations, it is apparent major brands such as Nike, Disney, Reebok, the Gap
and others are involved in the use of sweatshops. Sweatshops are commonly known for having poor
working conditions, unfair wages, unreasonable hours, child labor, and a lack of benefits for workers.

the end of the war. As they stepped across the threshold between the old world and the new (Ash

Lies, is a prime example of Trethewey s phenomenal work and conveys an important, and quite

Trethewey begins in lines 1 through 6 by telling the readers about the lies she told as a child. She
explains to the readers that these lies were just white lies and nothing more than that. In lines 1
through 6, Trethewey says, The lies I could tell, /when I was growing up /light bright, near white /high
yellow, red boned /in a black place, /were just white lies. The literal definition of a white lie is, a
harmless or trivial lie, especially one told to avoid hurting someone s feelings. Though, Trethewey

about where she lives in lines 7 through 11. The author states, I could easily tell the white folks /that
we lived uptown, /not in that shanty fied shotgun section /along the tracks. Trethewey is using

the symbols and the stories behind these symbols. There are some symbols of Hopi pottery that have
stories behind them and some that are symbols of either lost significance or the story is unknown.
Some of the symbols we think of as symbols, are really the potters own design. Most people make the
mistake that symbols and designs are the same thing, but in fact they are very different. Hopi potters,
mostly women, have been instrumental in both preserving and developing traditional symbols and

Once the pot is finished, the potter looks at it and if there is something wrong with it, such as it is lop
sided or the design is corked, he/she takes it as a learning experience , and will know what not to do

Abstract Support Vector Machine (SVM) is regarded as a good alternative of the traditional learning
classification. Terrain classification using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) imagery
has been a very active research field over recent years. Because of support vector s excellent learning
performance, it has become a research hot spot in the field of machine learning. In this paper, we
firstly evaluate and compare different features for classifying polarimetric SAR imagery and then we
will describe two SVM methods: Normal represents the one without feature selection and weighted
represents with optimal multi feature selection. Obviously, the weighted SVM returns a sparse set of
features and employs less SV s than normal. However, the performance of weighted SVM is no worse
and even better than the performance of normal one. The excellent recognition rates achieved in
experiments indicate that advanced (weighted) SVM is well suited for SAR image classification. The
good performance of the proposed methods is illustrated in three challenging remote sensing
