Mental Health Act Case Study
After introducing oneself to the patient, and going over the patient s records, capacity needs to be
established to provide person centred care. The Mental Health Act 1983 has 5 sections, of which Jamie
has seen sectioned under section 2, which is upon admission to hospital the patient can be detained for
up to 28 days in the hospital for assessment requiring 2 Doctors and 1 approved mental health
practitioner (Lloyd M, 2012). Section 2 of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) outlined capacity as being
incapable of making decisions for yourself in relation to the matter because of an impairment or a
disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain. The Act declares that in law it is presumed adults
have the capacity to make choices and requires proof if they remain unable to. Jamie was examined by
The Older People s Mental Health team (OPMH) and an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NMC (2015), demonstrates to provide a high standard of care, written documents are significant
as they withhold valuable data and aid to notice any changes in the patient s health, and assuming that
the patient went to court, documentation is critical. The law case Ms. B v NHS Hospital Trust (2002),
doctors went against her wishes arguing she had no mental capacity but no documentation was
presented with the court ruling she did have the capacity and should have been honoured and it was an
unlawful act to have ignorance against the laws surrounding documentation. Ignorance of the Law is
no defence with both healthcare and the law in a consistent state of transition the health professional
has the obligation to be conscious of the affecting laws in her practice (Dimond, 2009). The Human
rights act (1998), states everyone has a right to their life being protected by law and when there is no
capacity doctors or power of attorney have a duty of a professional to take action in the best interests

Source Bias In Research
What is a Good Source? Most students have written their fair share of papers that require multiple
sources from multiple viewpoints. But how do you know which sources are reliable and which ones to
avoid? With the amount of information out there, it is incredibly hard to know what is true or not or
who is being incredibly biased or not.
1. Sources?
According to the University of Illinois, different sources are better for different topics, it states that
Newspapers are better for Daily local, national, and international news, events, and editorial coverage
(Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). While Scholarly or Academic Journals are better for Recent
research on a topic and Focused, peer reviewed articles written by experts (Select the Best Information
Source, n.d.). Check the references page, the amount and quality of a references page means so much
when it comes to determining whether a source is credible. Do they have any sources? How many
sources? If they have no sources at all, then it probably is not credible, because you have no ... Show

If bias is there, and you don t spot it, you might have a source that contradicts the other, which makes
you less credible. Bias can change how an article is written and can obscure the truth of the
information that is there. If there is a bias towards a certain party then the article might obscure the
negatives of one party and only list negatives of the other, which would not be telling lies necessarily,
but would not be telling the full truth, which can make for a slanted paper about the subject. Which
makes you a source that is unreliable, and that causes the reader to question the paper that you are
writing, which usually isn t good. Sources without bias are usually more reliable because they usually
tell the whole store and not just one side of

Three Messages from The Writer
Authors are very clever with their words. They are brilliant and humorous, or even dark and
depressing. They spin tales of wonder and horror and delight, and they tell you of things that are true.
They can show you of the way that things have to be. As such is life and there is no way we can
change that. You cannot stand by and watch as time leaves you as nothing but dust. You cannot try to
change everything for your power only goes so far. Richard Wilbur threw some rather interesting
things into his poem, The Writer , and it just goes to show that even in the simplest of things, there is a
limit to the affect you have on the situation.
Even though some people of this world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Writer , R. Wilbur stated, I wish her a lucky passage...of life or death, as I had forgotten. I wish
what I wished you before, but harder. You can t stand idly by and watch life tumble away and do
nothing but close your eyes and wish. If you want something to be, you must take action and make
everything you can of this short time and help all those in need. You may try as hard as you might, but
there is only so much you can do for the ones you attempt to help. When you rise up from your place
to try to help somebody, you cannot do all of the work. They re the ones who have to learn and they
need help themselves. You can open the window to help the bird, but it is the one who has to fly out.
You can give a child everything they need to succeed in life, but they have to be the ones to do
something with all of that. As said in The Writer , ...For a helpless hour, we watched the
sleek...iridescent creature batter against the brilliance, drop like a glove to the hard floor... Even
though you try to help the people who are panicking and trying to escape, you can only do so much. If
it has to be, then escape or redemption is not possible, due to the one in peril. In many poems, clever
authors hide messages in the plot and in all of the words and similes. They tie things together with
certain words that work together brilliantly. They show the world through their work the realities and
hardships of life. They bring us to the knowledge that try as we might, there are

Effective Use Of Imagery In Marianne Moore s Poetry
In Poetry , Marianne Moore explains that it is not that she does not like poetry, but it is the idea that
poetry is simply not the same anymore. Poetry conveys ingenuity and candid ideas; it should be used
to express one s authentic thoughts and feelings. Moore connects the use of imagery to expound on the
interpretation that people do not appreciate or like what they do not understand. The poem purposely
has no true structure, as it is written in free form with no rhyme scheme or pattern. Moore shows her
frustration with the addressed autocrats of literature and displays that by using an ironic tone in the
composition of the poem. Through Moore s use of imagery, she highlights people s lack of originality
and perspective. In the line Hands that can grasp, eyes that can dilate, hair that can rise if it must, these
things are important not because a high sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they
are useful... (Moore 6), the speaker is stating one s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem has a natural flow, exemplifying that poetry does not have to abide by a set of rules. People
are used to thinking they must follow the cliché guidelines that poetry must rhyme, have a pattern, or a
hidden meaning, and that simply is not true. The unrestrained arrangement of the poem connects with
one of Moore s concluding lines, ...the raw material of poetry in all its rawness... (44). The speaker s
use of enjambment represents the flow of her thoughts in the poem. Every word continued over the
line break has its own emphasis. For example, there are only two periods in the poem, one in the first
stanza and one at the very end. The period is placed in the quote, ...one discovers after it all, a place
for the genuine. , which puts emphasis on the word genuine. Moore uses this to officially open the
readers mind to genuine poetry, as after that point she provides justifications as to what makes it
genuine with the

How Does Homelessness Affect Our Society
Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless
(Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow
sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska
gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are
called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in.
After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of
homelessness in America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny
homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become
a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First! Village would not only
strengthen UNL s Panhellenic Council s generous reputation, but also support the movement to end
homelessness through providing a home and community to a young outcasted individual.
Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has grown
to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the homeless
in surrounding cities of Austin. They have served over 5 million meals with the help of 19,000
volunteers. Their recent innovation (Community First!) is a 27 acre development that has been
building a tiny home community for homeless people to buy for inexpensive prices. The village
features miniature neighborhoods of homes, a church, garden, medical facility, market, movie theater,
and other amenities. The project continues to grow as donations and volunteers come in for
construction of housing and purchases of needed materials and goods. As of now, the village has
housed almost 200 former homeless men and women. Mobile Loaves Fishes continues to house more
people as construction is completed and word has spread to other major cities of the work this
organization has founded and grown. Many of the people living in the village have come from a
variety of lives before moving into the community. Some old, some new, and often have been alone
most of their life.

Compromise Dbq
Americans in the early nineteenth century had been, or atleast seemed to be very desent at solving
their political problems with compromise. Compromise had been less and less effective at settling
these politcal disputes the closer to 1900 it became. It seemed to be revativly impossible by 1860. This
impossibity arouse from the North and the South adpoting impervious opinions about politics and
slavery that heavily opposed each other. Senator Henry Clay, the Father of Compromise clearly stated
and believed that it was utterly impractical that South Carolina ever wated to suceceed from the
United States(Document A). However, in reality they did due to Abraham Lincoln s message stating
that slavery will be confined to where is exists was the last straw and made South Carolina want to do

Republic Of Outsiders Analysis
Activism is defined as the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or
social change by the Oxford Dictionary online. Traditionally, this is the commonly accepted and
widespread definition used to label the renegades of society, the fighters for justice, and the believers
in change. This trend of societal self modification has predicated our prevailing view of activism,
because social change is, and always has been, a part of human evolution. Nowadays we are faced
with a polymorphous concept of activism that baffles everyone from academics to activists
themselves. Over the past decade, new forms of pseudo activism have appeared, and have proven to
be increasingly difficult to classify under the preexisting categorizations. In Alissa Quart s book

Performance art is often seen as social change campaigns but by analyzing on a case by case basis, we
can see how some are indeed activist movements whereas others are centered more on making a bold,
artistic statement by using controversial contemporary issues as a platform to do so. Emma Sulkowitz,
or mattress girl as she has been dubbed, is primarily a performance artist, dedicating her life to her
artwork. Her ancillary aim is to propagate awareness of sexual violence and rape on college campuses.
Due to her secondary, more public goal, she s seen as an activist whereas in reality she s purely an
icon for genuine activist groups fighting for this particular cause. I would nevertheless consider art as
a novel, and useful expansion on the existing and traditional forms of activism. These individuals with
their unique passions and interests have enriched and altered mainstream culture to a certain extent.

The City Of Florence First Place For A Movement Essay
Gathering of people form village, villages become town and it grows to become a city. For centuries,
city has acted as the centre for social, political changes since the dawn of history, especially after
Renaissance, where the city of Florence first demonstrate the power of individual can be attracted to
one location and become an iconic place for a movement. Since then, city has become the birthplace
for many movement socially, economically or politically, where against or comfort to oppression,
resistance of any kind, or leading revolution that changed the way of life around the world. To
investigate the reasons behind this relations, events throughout were being explored. The end of
seignorialism forces people to move to city for employment opportunity and therefore provided labour
force for mass labour and industrial revolution escalated the pace of urbanization. People forms city,
and each individual has their own opinion, therefore city is a place where the idea clashed and the new
ideology formed everyday, this is why city is the source of change. Since renaissance, the proportion
of population dwelling in urban area has been ever increasing, therefore in the city information
transfers faster, and there is a higher chance for people to rise up in the city than the country side, due
to the proximity. Some movements strengthen the role of the city and create a new way of life such as
Renaissance and industrial revolution, where it is taken in a non violent form and

Introduction
Paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNS) are syndromes that result from dysfunction of the nervous
system, caused by a benign or malignant tumor via mechanisms other than direct tumor cell
infiltration, metastasis, coagulopathy, infection or any treatment side effects [1]. All parts of the
central and peripheral nervous system may be affected by PNS and, as a result, signs and symptoms
are diverse. Most PNS of the central nervous system have in common a subacute course leaving the
patients severely disabled in weeks to months and inflammatory changes in the CSF, including
moderate lymphocytic pleocytosis, increased protein levels and IgG index and presence of CSF
specific oligoclonal bands[2]. Early recognition may be difficult

Harvey is easily the bravest person in the holiday house. The first place that Harvey shows his bravery
is when he is transmutes into a vampire. The narrator of the story admits that Harvey is brave enough
to do this prank to Wendell. His cry became a whoop;his terror to joy (46). This quote explains how
Harvey cares about Wendell and didn t want to harm him at first but when Jive pushed off the roof and
into the night sky he was brave. He also has a mischievous side underneath all the sweet, caring
Harvey. Harvey s joy got the best of him and turned into bravery. Wendell is a coward compared to his
best friend Harvey. Wendell truly shows his cowardness when Harvey transforms himself into a
vampire. Wendell cries for mercy and eventually gets his way. Don t kill me! Please, please, I beg you
don t kill me (46)! This quote truly proves that Wendell is a coward. It also proves he doesn t have the
investigation side to this scene. Harvey knows when something is wrong or something isn t right. And
this shows that Wendell does not have what it takes to be as brave as Harvey. This exemplifies that
Wendell is not the hero but the hero s sidekick who later on, helps Harvey a lot. This is the most
important part of Harvey and Wendell s friendship. They care about each other. Harvey is kind about
Wendell s weaknesses.

The Presence-Absence Of Opium In Sumerian Cuneiform
The presence absence of opium in the ancient Near East and Mesopotamia is a topic debated for
almost a century. In 1928 Charles Terry and Nildred Pellens, following an interpretation of R.
Doughert started the debate trying to identify opium in Sumerian Cuneiform word hul gil, in which
hul would mean opium and gil, joy . In 1949 Reginald Campbell Thompson, in an extensive paper on
Assyrian botany, recognized opium in another Sumerian term, ú nam ti (or ú nam til la), literally the
plant of life , corresponding to the Akkadian irrû. This term, according to Thompson, would mean
coursing, in the sense of a prophecy expressed under the narcotic effect, by binding to the same
concept the words šam and araru. From attempts to recognize the term

The J.F.K. Assassination
The J.F.K. Assassination The 1960 Presidential election was won by John F. Kennedy who defeated
the incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon by the narrowest margin in history. Kennedy, a senator
from Massachusetts was the only Roman Catholic and the youngest man elected to the presidency. In
1963, during his third year in office President Kennedy s popularity increased and he had already
started planning for his reelection campaign. On the morning of November 23, 1963, the President
flew to Dallas where he was to speak at a lunch held at the Trade Mart. As the presidential motorcade

during the 1960 s. In this book, Prouty explains the steps involved in planning the assassination. First
the conspirators chose Dallas as the site for the murder and selected a skilled group of mechanics .
These mechanics are an elite group of sharpshooters that are trained and supported by the CIA. Next,
the plotters made certain that routine security measures would be neglected. However, the biggest and
most important element of the ensuing plot was the creation of the scapegoat. Cover Story experts had
created an entire scenario setting Oswald up as this patsy long before the assassination actually was

Secret Service protection during his routine appearances and political functions. It is significant that
since the moment the President arrived at Love Field, standard security measures were either

The Impact of European Diseases in the New World Essay
The Impact of European Diseases in the New World
If science has taught us anything, it is that one event invariably effects countless others. This is no
more evident than when a species is introduced into a new environment. Once a foreign species finds
itself in new surroundings, it can either die or adapt. Often, these introduced species take over the
environment, irrevocably changing it to fit their needs. This usually leads to a serious deteriorating in
the well being of species currently existing there. Such is the case as when the Europeans introduced
themselves to the New World. The new arrivals not only brought themselves, their technologies, and
ways of life, but, most disastrously, their diseases arrived as well.

Killing its host is counter productive for diseases when the host dies, it dies. (Cowley, 54) Regardless
of the infection s intentions however, host death can often be the result.
And death is something that ran rampant through the native population. The Indians were not able to
combat these new afflictions because they were new to their systems. Small pox, whooping cough,
chicken pox, scarlet fever, influenza and many more had long been around in Europe and the colonists
had developed resistance to most of them. (Crosby, 198)
When a disease has existed in a community for years, the members of said community develop a
natural, inherited defense after some generations. After initial entrance, the disease runs through the
population and the more susceptible individuals acquire the disease and die from it. Those individuals
hardy enough to survive then dominate the gene pool and the disease become less fatal to the
remaining population. (Meltzer, 39)
Eventually, the diseases are always around in some variety, but there is a low incidence of
infection...with the only susceptible individuals are those entering by birth, which is way diseases like
measles and chick pox effect mostly the young, or from outside. These individuals show higher rates
of infection and death than those already living there amongst the diseases do. (Linton, 131,141) This
is precisely what occurred to the natives of the New

Bohr s model, sometimes referred to as the planetary model, was able to provide explanation for
concepts that were previously indescribable. Working off Rutherford s previous work, Bohr was able
to successfully explain the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. While Rutherford s model focused mainly
on the nucleus, Bohr paid greater attention to electrons. The previous model of the atom stated an
electron was an orbiting planet. The problem in this flawed model was that the electron, moving in a
circular path, would be accelerating. Acceleration would create a change in magnetic field, which
would in turn carry energy away from the nucleus. The electron would eventually slow and be
captured by the nucleus. Bohr s model expanded upon Rutherford s and solved many flaws of the
previous model The Bohr Diagram, ). Bohr discovered that the atom consisted of a small, positive
nucleus, with negatively charged electrons traveling around it due to the electrostatic force of coulomb
s law. (Matthews 2010). Bohr stated that electrons travel only in successively larger orbits. The outer
orbits hold more electrons that the inner ones and it s the outer orbits that determine the atom s
chemical properties. Although Bohr s model eliminated many problems of earlier renderings, it was
not without its own flaws. Bohr s model violated the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle because it
states that electrons have both a known orbit

The Rolling Stone Redaction.
The Rolling Stone Redaction was the mistake waiting to happen as a result of journalistic desperation
on the Rolling Stones part, as the once iron clad story s eggshell are torn asunder by the increasing
lack of verifiability. Only to reveal a viscous trail with no clear substance. As The Rolling Stone began
on this path, they put aside safeguards that would normally have sent the story to the bin, ignoring
conflicting information from the other sources and only focusing on the main. That is when they
gathered from other sources, as the paper has a distinct lack of transparency when it deals with the

answer has its credible reasoning of not disturbing Jackie, the Rolling Stone should have reached them

The Role Of Innovation For Firm Growth
The role of innovation for firm growth
The aim of this report is to explore the role of Innovation for firm growth. This will be carried out by
examining the current literature surrounding innovation and firm growth and choosing articles from
relevant journals which are appropriate to the aim. Rather than conducting a brief analysis of several
articles, this report will instead make one highly relevant article the focus and will contrast its findings
and methods with other research papers in an attempt to add to or challenge the article.
The article in question is titled Firm growth and innovation: Towards a typology of innovation
strategy by Vasco Eiriz, Ana Faria and Natália BarBosa and was published in Innovation:
Management, Policy Practice on Volume 15, Issue 1, March 201398. This article was chosen because
the authors are prolific writers on innovation and entrepreneurship with over twenty articles between
them and have been cited hundreds of times. Additionally, the article in question is recent and covers
many of the traditional and emerging theories of innovation and firm growth and so serves as a review
on the current state of literature on the topic. Furthermore the article proposes a novel idea, that the

a) competitive pressure from other market players
Encompassed with various companies and products, the weight loss industry is highly competitive.
Medifast has to face the threats from its competitors among supply chain distribution, product
diversity, production expense, popularity and reaction time of customer demand. Besides, new
entrants in the market increase the risks of this business. Currently, Medifast identifies Nutrisystem
and Weight Watchers International as its main competitiors.

Cisco Systems, Inc.
Cisco Systems, Inc. is an IT company that specifies in the sale of networking and communication
items and solutions. It is a business to business company where they sell items primarily to large
enterprises and telecommunications companies while also marketing items designed for small
businesses and consumers such as routers, modems, and home network management software. The
items and solutions target to transport data, voice and video interaction within buildings and
institutions as well as around the world. Cisco s supply chain was organized like a pyramid, with the
company at the main point. On the second level, there were a few contract manufacturers who were
accountable for final set up and assembly. These manufacturers were reliant on large sub tier
organizations for elements such as processer chips and optical equipment. Those organizations in turn
were reliant on an even larger base of product providers who were spread all over the world.
Some of the strengths of the networked supply chain idea applied by Cisco are the efficiency and
value in implementation of the policies and tasks needed to keep everyone satisfied, customers,
workers and administration. This idea targeted on the control procedures engaged in the development
and submission of their items and products. The main weak point of the networked supply chain idea
applied by Cisco are that they lacked the abilities to apply the supply chain idea. Cisco lost their
money by investing in incorrect marketing

The Optimization Of Cloud Computing Essay
With the increasing number of users of cloud, the load/ traffic also increases and it becomes important
to have some techniques to balance the load equally among all the nodes, so that the user doesn t
suffer and the services are delivered effectively and efficiently. Therefore the need for Load Balancing
algorithms arises. There are a number of techniques available for load balancing. In this paper,
different kinds of load balancing algorithms in cloud computing along with the challenges and the
qualitative metrics for the various load balancing algorithms are presented.
Keywords: Load balancing, dynamic and static algorithms, Virtual Servers.
1. Introduction The definition of Cloud Computing as issued by the U.S. National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) September, 2011 is: Cloud computing is a model for enabling
ubiquitous, convenient, on demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing
resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned
and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud model is
composed of five essential characteristics, three service models, and four deployment models. Cloud
computing is a type of Internet based computing that provides shared computer processing resources
and data to computers and other devices on demand. It provides an easy and flexible way of storing,
retrieving huge data without bothering about the resources. With

Utopia By Thomas Moore s Utopia
Thomas Moore s Utopia appears to be a perfect society where everyone is treated fairly and equally.
However, Utopia is not as egalitarian as it appears. This can be determined through the implications
about and restraints placed on women. The attitude toward women in Utopia may have been seen as
acceptable in 1516, but in contrast with today s standards this approach in the book towards women is
misogynistic and oppressive. In Utopia, values are critical to the preservation of peace in society. Yet,
these values do not include fair and proper treatment of every individual. Utopia appears to be a land
of no persecution but women still suffer and are harassed through the societal standards pressed upon
them as a condition of their sex. While the land of Utopia at first appears to give more rights to
women than many countries did at the time, it becomes evident that the treatment of women and their
rights are not representative of the supposed egalitarian principles applauded in the novel.
There are multiple cases in Utopia where conflict is evident between the treatment of men and the
treatment of women. There are many moments in Utopia when it appears that the women are equal to
men, only to turn around and suggest they are not. One of these examples is when Raphael Hythloday
is discussing the terms and conditions of marriage, or rather, conditions prior to even the engagement.
He says that Whether she is a widow or a virgin, the women is shown naked to the suitor by a

Pure Evil In A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah
The human behavior is one that will haunt humanity forever. A Long Way Gone, written by Ishmael
Beah, is an original non fiction story based on Ishmael s personal experiences in warfare. But,
shockingly, he witnessed warfare from the small eyes of his teenage years. Having to experience one
of the worst things in history, at such a young age, is terrible. War, in this case or in any case, relates to
both human condition and human nature. Human conditions, in short, are things that that defines the
human existence (birth, death, etc.) Human nature, close to human conditions, are how humans act
naturally to their environment and others. The theme of A Long Way Gone ties strongly with both of
these with a passion. It describes war as an art, with human condition as a canvas and human nature to
paint in the fine details. The question asked is what Ishmael Beah s experience tells us about the
meaning of the human being, and to answer we have to poke at some topics that we ve covered. The
answers to the sole question include the hypothetical existence of pure evil, the important keys of
human social life, and how war affects one s own mind.
In the attempt to comprehend the meaning of being human, it s important to first understand what it
must mean to be pure evil. If we can know what pure evil is, we can understand the conditions that
brought Ishmael to do such horrid things himself. In several chapters of the book, Ishmael goes
through the torture of the militia known as the

Analysis Of Fareed Zakaria s The Rise Of Illiberal Democracy

10 Nov, 2014
Fareed Zakaria s The Rise of Illiberal Democracy is an article discussing his point of view about
illiberal and liberal democracies. He explains how democracy is now simply viewed together with
liberalism altogether and how they went hand in hand with the writing of our constitution. This article
informs you about how the mix of liberalism and democracy seems to have affected the Civil Rights
Movement. He also explains how illiberal democracy can lead to civil war and genocide. With the
Civil Rights Movement, the use of liberties the blacks did have were used efficiently to accomplish
desegregation in most aspects of life. In the article, Fareed Zakaria explains the difference between a
liberal and illiberal democracy. He starts with liberal democracy, which is a free and fair voting system
that protects its citizen s liberties, much like the one found in the US. liberal democracy started in
Western Europe and the US, and created rights and freedoms which secured government protection for
citizens, as said by Zakaria, To secure these rights, it emphasized checks on the power of each branch
of government, equality under the law, impartial courts and tribunals, and separation of church and
state (Zakaria 26). In the United States, we have a liberal democracy meaning our rights and liberties
are protected. The US also has a multiparty electoral system with free and fair

Corruption In I Claudius
I, Claudius is a fictional autobiography written in the voice of the fourth Roman Emperor, Tiberius
Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus Claudius for short. The story recounts the period of the founding
of the Roman Empire to the coronation of Claudius himself; but, as seen from the perspective of
Claudius an adamant republican the Roman Empire is one that is doomed to fall, prophesied by the
Sibyl of Cumae, due to political instability and dangerous power struggles. Similar to the Roman
Empire of I, Claudius, the Britain of King Lear also falls into a state of political chaos akin to anarchy;
the sudden abdication of Lear and his senility ultimately bring about the unravelling of his family,
followers, and kingdom. The following power struggles in Rome and Britain lead to the corruption of
many individuals in their respective time periods. Both I, Claudius by Robert Graves and King Lear
by William Shakespeare, set during times of political turbulence, suggest that the competition for and
possession of power can corrupt and alter individuals and society. Both works are set in times of
political turbulence, times in which people would seize the opportunity to gain absolute power or at
least an upper hand over others. In I, Claudius, Livia, Claudius grandmother, proves to be an
incredibly ambitious woman, with the political acumen to match. Before the birth of the Roman
Empire, the Second Triumvirate, consisting of Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian (at that time),

The Growth Of Marine Diatom
Abstract
The growth of marine diatom, Chaetoceros muelleri, used as live feed in aquaculture, was optimized
using response surface methodology (RSM). The variables initially screened for biomass production
using Plackett Burman experimental design were nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature, pH, salinity
and agitation speed. The screening revealed that nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature and pH
significantly influenced the biomass production of C. muelleri. These five variables were further
optimized by central composite design (CCD) of RSM for biomass production and the medium was
constituted accordingly to have nitrate 180 mg l 1, phosphate 7.5 mg l 1, silicate 30 mg l 1, and
temperature of incubation 31oC and pH 6.46. At the end of 10 day culture period under the above
conditions biomass, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were found significantly increased from 360 ±0.01
mg l 1, 9.41±0.02%,18.11±0.01%, 0.6±0.02% to 1.16±0.01g l 1 ,

slabs. This fence and concrete wall would be known as the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was built to
keep Western fascists , followers of a political side, out of East Germany. The GDR also wanted them
to stay out because they would weaken the socialist state. In June of 1945, when World War II was
ending, the GDR split the nation into four allied occupation zones. The Eastern part of Germany went

Use Of Bearings And Its Impact On Society
The use of bearings has been emerging in the society for a few years now. It is a lot more common to
see people use bearings to find angles and work out where an object or area might be located. The use
of a compass is also key in finding bearings as the compass shows the true north and from there the
bearing of a point from another point can be calculated. It is key to always begin facing north is the
bearing calculated is to be found in the true north format. The use of the Geographic Coordinate
System is also a common use in society, this system uses two sets of numbers (longitude and latitude)
to locate and identify every single spot of the Earth to a certain extent of decimal places. This is the
most commonly used system to plot the coordinates of a place on Earth, it is also the most accurate
system known to humanity.
The purpose of this investigation is to use bearings in everyday life. gain a deeper understanding of
bearings and see a few examples of how bearings are used in daily life will be explored as a
demonstration. The aim of this investigation was to be able to determine where a spot is located in
comparison to another through the use of bearings and geographic coordinates. Once this investigation
is complete it is expected to be able to use bearings to determine the location of another point from the
base point and draw a reasonably accurate diagram of where that point lays. Also it is expected to be

Three Values of Greek Society in the Odyssey Essay
The world is full of wonders, but nothing is more wonderful than man. This quote shows that the
Greeks valued themselves, but also their intellect in which they know that the world about them is
great. The Greeks valued beauty, art, intellect, honor, and truth; the list is long. Some of these values
are shown through the story of the Odyssey, which tells of the adventures of Odysseus and his family.
In order to understand Greek values and how they are portrayed in Greek society, one must examine
how some values are portrayed in the Odyssey: hospitality, intellect, and beauty. In Greek society,
hospitality is really important. The Greeks strongly believed in their gods, and they always wanted to
be prepared if one came knocking at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of a lack of hospitality was when Odysseus and his men came upon the Kyklopes , and
the one eyed monsters treated them terribly. On first sight they tried to kill Odysseus and all his men.
The Greeks also valued intelligence and intellect. Although there were certain areas in Greece that
valued it more than others, such as Athens, the Greeks were generally an intelligent race of people. An
example from the Odyssey is when Penelope (Odysseus wife, Telemakhos mother) tells her suitors
that she needs to finish weaving a shroud for an old man before she marries. She proceeds to weave on
her loom every day, but unravels it during the night, so that she will never have to marry. Another
example is when Odysseus finally arrives home, and he disguises himself so he can question people
about his home and the situation, all without being noticed. In this way he gained information without
revealing himself. Another important Greek value is beauty. The Greeks strived for the idealistic form
in everything they did: art, literature, beauty, and even in the sciences. The Odyssey portrays Penelope
to be an older woman, but a beautiful older woman, having a hall full of suitors wanting to marry her.
Another example is when Athena changes Odysseus appearance in certain situations, usually making
Odysseus look young and less hardened by all his traveling. A more detailed description of this is
when Odysseus

Limitations Of Athenian Democracy
The ancient city state of Athens has long been celebrated for the foundation of the first democracy in
the 5th century B.C.E. Though it was unrivaled by any other ancient civilization in the creation of a
government that offered its citizens a way to directly participate in various democratic institutions and
make their voices heard, it was far from perfect. Identifying the limitations of Athenian democracy at
its peak and investigating some of the events that potentially let to its subsequent demise provides a
more complete understanding of the weaknesses in the democratic system. While Athenian democracy
granted ordinary male citizens unprecedented political power and is celebrated for being an innovative
form of government in the ancient world and a model for contemporary democracy, it was inclusive of
only a small portion of the Athenian population and had inherent flaws within the system that
ultimately lead to its failure.
Although Athens had a direct democracy, participation in the government was heavily restricted.
Governmental participation was initially extended to the ordinary citizens of Athens in order to
mitigate the resentment of the majority of people towards the aristocratic tier of society. However,
women, slaves, and immigrants were excluded from citizenship, and true citizens (men of age with
Greek parents) made up only about ten to twenty percent of the population . Also, many Greek states
were built on the institution of slavery and the subjection of

The Threat Of The Terror Group Isis
In December of 2011, the United States withdrew all remaining combat troops from Iraq. After eight
years of war, the United States turned the responsibility for the defense of Iraq over to the Iraqi
security forces. Iraq immediately saw the rise of sectarian violence among Sunnis and Shia. This
nation also saw the reemergence of the insurgency known as Al Qaeda in Iraq in the northwest portion
of the country. The problems in Iraq grew with the igniting of a civil war in the neighboring nation of
Syria. This civil war allowed for members of Al Qaeda in Iraq to spread to and develop in an unstable
area and emerging as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS. Within twelve months, ISIS grew by
creating of an organizational structure, engaging in violent military campaigns, developing an
economy and establishing successful recruitment techniques. ISIS now controls large swaths of
territory in both northwest Iraq and Eastern Syria. Political leadership in the United States is now
debating what action should be taken to combat the terror group ISIS. To prevent ISIS from harming
our national security, to stop the threat of international terrorism and to stop the destruction of Iraq and
its people The United States should send ground troops to Iraq to combat ISIS.

Morality And The Importance Of Being Ernest
Morality and the Importance of Being Earnest
Oscar Wilde s short play The Importance of Being Earnest was written during the Victorian Era. This
was a time when strict moral values were emphasized. On the cover of The Importance of Being
Earnest there is a subtitle A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Despite using the word trivial, the
play is important because it reflects the Victorian Era s significance of social hierarchy. When Wilde
refers to serious people, he means the ones that followed the Victorian morals in order to be presented
in the highest fashion. Serious people during the Victorian Era were able to read this work without

The Issue Of Paper Mill Closures And A Bad Reputation For...
Paper, Pollutants, Politics, and Precaution
The paper industry here in Maine is struggling with mill closures and a bad reputation for being
wasteful or bad for the environment. The issue of paper mills being an added stress to the environment
is not unique to Maine. Mills in Wisconsin are also very wasteful, producing toxins in the air, soil, and
water. In one river in Wisconsin, two hundred fifty thousand pounds of sediment is said to have been
contaminated with manufactured organic chemicals used by the paper mills (Environmental Impacts
of the Paper Industry, 2016). The Environmental protection agency has become involved in the issue
by estimating the movement of about one hundred sixty thousand pounds of sediment from that river
to adjoining lakes, river, and bays (Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). Restricting
access from these locations would be pointless if a natural disaster occurred, possibly washing the
contaminated soil to populated areas (Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). Not only
does the paper industry s chemical waste enter the water systems, it also enters the air. The particulate
matter entering the air includes carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxides and
particulates. These contribute to ozone warnings, acid rain, global warming and respiratory problems
(Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). The paper making process also consumes huge
amounts of energy, drawing from public energy

History of South Africa
South Africans had been living under the system of apartheid since 1948 where citizens were divided
by race and kept separate through certain system of laws which governed all aspects of daily life.
Even though black people were in majority they were denied the right to vote in National elections.
The educational system was designed not to educate young blacks into professionals but to prepare
them to serve white upper class. Apartheid went further to divide the schools into racial groups
therefore the white schools were so advantaged within resources compared to the black schools within
the town of Soweto. Government also insisted that the Afrikaans language be used as the medium in
all local schools which created enormous distress amongst black students. Many divisions between
black and white took place in society. The black people found themselves infuriated by the fact that
they were slaves in their own country of birth.
It was back in 1962 that Nelson Mandela that the leader of the anti apartheid movement was arrested
and his political party the African National Congress were banned by Government. The African
National Congress then chose to ignore Government and continued with their movements over the
next two years. Finally government had to use brutal action against the anti apartheid command which
brought the entire movement to a complete standstill.
Shortly after this standstill the young students in the township of Soweto Johannesburg managed to

Than we go on to talk about the benefits of using bowling as a fitness for a healthy lifestyle, and then
we move on to talk some of the area where bowling doesn t help when we are talking about a healthy
lifestyle, we also tie everything together at the end and compare using bowling as fitness sport to other
sports, and finally we go on to give a personal reflection of my overall opinion on bowling and my
future plans for playing bowling in my life. Bowling can be played for fun, and because of the nature
of bowling, it is perhaps more suitable for playing for fun compared to other sports. The obvious
advantage here is that it requires very little atheletism and physical ability to just play, this is not the
case for sports like basketball, football, tennis and soccer. Where in other to have a fun game there is a
certain standard of the athletic abilities and skills of the players involved. Unlike bowling where
anyone can just play. Additionally, in bowling there is room for conversation and jokes more so than
any of the sports mentioned above, so the ability for social interaction is certainly greater. It is easy to
do when you are sitting comfortably and waiting for your turn. The situation itself actually encourages
this, since it s the only logical thing to do. This is a huge advatange of bolwing and it makes this
activity very fun. This is ideal for someone that has a problem with depression.Depression is an issues
for many individuals so having a sport like this is a great since it allows friends and coworkers to get
together on a weekly basis and interact with each other. It provides a platform where everyone can
play the same game. Regardless of age athletic ability and previous experience of

The War I And World War II
Introduction During World War I and World War II life back home changed excessively. When the
soldiers went to fight in World War 1 and World War 2, women and children had to replace men in the
workforce. There was an increase in those affected by the trauma of the wars, and the birth rates
dropped during this time. Family Families were affected by the trauma and exposure of the war,
causing mental illnesses such as depression. Young children had been exposed to the trauma of war. A
great deal of pressure was put onto the older children because they had to take care of the household
and their younger siblings. Injuries and mental health left soldiers unemployed, which led to financial
difficulty to provide for the children, this forced families to change their standard of living in some
cases ( Impact on soldiers and their families ). Children were also able to help during the wars through
services such as knitting sweaters and making bandages for soldiers overseas. Sufficiently the topic of
war was also beginning to appear in curricular in early 1914. Patriotic teachers encouraged students to
help convince adult males or older brothers to enlist in the war. Countless children remember war as
an economic hardship, grinding tragedy and unbearable grief ( The Children s War ). Separation of
fathers or sons left devastating effects on children, many felt as if their childhood had been stripped
from them. This established tension between families as they poverty rate had been

Most Handsomest Drowned Man
The Most Handsomest Drowned Man in the World, is a story of a dead man who brings the village to
life. The presence of the dead man gave villagers a feeling of isolation, in return the villages gave him
a home and a place to feel welcome. The dead man was called Esteban by the villagers. He also
becomes a symbol of change for the villagers because his presence inspires them to adjust certain
aspects of their lives. For instance after Esteban s farewell all the houses in the village will have big
doors and higher ceilings to show that Esteban belonged there, But they also knew that everything
would be different from then on that their houses would have wider doors, higher ceilings, and
stronger floors so that, Esteban s memory could go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statement describes how villagers are attracted the drowned man. In the narrator s description of
Esteban, we realize that there is nothing that extraordinary about him. In fact, the people started
thinking how good Esteban s life was before his death . They are more fascinated with the virtual
qualities that villagers have in their minds rather than Esteban s actual qualities. He gave villagers a
desire for change. Because they were able to see something different and wonderful in him, they are
also able to see that they are missing something in their lives. We are told that, became aware for the
first time of the desolation of their streets, the dryness of their courtyards, and the narrowness of their
dreams as they faced the splendor and beauty of their drowned man . This causes villagers to change
how they live and they understand that things can never be the same they once were. In short, Esteban
gives the villagers a sense of

Ezekiel s Autobiography Of High School
Ezekiel s Autobiography I was born on July 24, 2006, in Mountain Home, Arkansas. It was a hot,
humid night. My parents are Stephen, and Shelly Walton. I don t remember much from my childhood.
I was told, I started crawling when I was six months old. I started talking at eleven months old. I
started walking at a year, and a half. I have a sister, her name is Nichole. Kindergarten began for me in
2011, when I was five years old. My teacher s name was Mrs. Rowlett at Mountain Home
Kindergarten. I don t know how I felt, really. I remember having nap time, but I could never seem to
fall asleep. In 2012, I started 1st grade, at Nelson Wilks Herron. My teacher s name was Mrs. Barnes.
She wore glasses, and she was awesome, from what I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My teacher s name was Mrs. Nunley. I really only remember a few things from 2nd grade. I remember
that I was rarely called on when I raised my hand, because I always knew the answer.I remember one
day we were having a Christmas party. And there was an Elf On The Shelf. I m not sure what the sign
said, but it was turned around. So I turned it around, since I thought that technically didn t count as
touching the Elf, but the whole class got mad at me. I started 3rd grade in 2014, at Hackler
Intermediate School. My teacher s name was Mrs. Childress. She taught me about money, with her
Childress Bucks . She taught how to use a register, although I don t remember now. This was also also
the year I got bullied by Dyllan. I started 4th grade in 2015, at the same school. My teacher s name
was Mrs. Kincade. I also had 2 other teachers in this grade, Mrs. Carson for math, and Mrs. Geoke for
science. I learned how to do the Whip, and Nae Nae. In 2016 I started the 5th grade at ARVA
(Arkansas Virtual Academy). I liked it because I could get done early, and get up and start school
whenever I wanted. We went on field trips constantly, with this extra time. The field trip consisted of a
lot of things. Things like going to zoos, hiking trails, and fish hatchery. We took constant breaks

Dawn by Elie Wiesel Essay
Dawn by Elie Wiesel
In this report you will see the comparisons between the novel Dawn and the life of Elie Wiesel, its
author. The comparisons are very visible once you learn about Elie Wiesel s life. Elie Wiesel was born
on September28,1928 in the town of Hungary. Wiesel went through a lot of hard times as a youngster.
In 1944, Wiesel was deported by the nazis and taken to the concentration camps. His family was sent
to the town of Auschwitz. The father, mother, and sister of Wiesel died in the concentration camps.
His older sister and himself were the only to survive in his family. After surviving the concentration
camps, Wiesel moved to Paris, where he studied literature at the Sorbonne from 1948 1951. Since
1949 he has worked as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually Wiesel went on to win an Nobel Peace Prize. The book Dawn concerns about the
experiences of a survivor just after the World War who joins the Jewish Underground efforts to form
an independent Israeli state. This novel is closely related to the one Night . The Novel is about a
character named Elisha who like Wiesel s life has to live through the concentration camps as a
youngster growing up. Elisha was a young Israeli freedom fighter whose assignment was to kill the
officer in reprisal for Britain s execution of a Jewish prisoner. She tried to form a free Israeli state,
because she was tired of all of the killings going on in the concentration camps and so forth. She like
many other Jews would have felt so much more comftorable with peace then all the deaths that were
taking place. Throughout the book her voyage is to kill the man that killed a fellow Jewish prisoner for
no apparent reason. This book forwards attention to the life of a young Israeli who struggles through
the Holocaust and wants to maintain peace throughout Israel . She is a diamond in the rough one could
say. Her strong hope was not the same among her fellow Israeli s. The future looked dim and
prospects were low. She had to convince the other and make them all strong in their conviction that
their people would survive, and would get through this horrible time. As a freedom fighter her main
goal was to kill the officer who was responsible for the execution of Jewish

The Mental Health Act 1983 has 5 sections, of which Jamie has seen sectioned under section 2, which is upon admission to hospital the patient can be detained for up to 28 days in the hospital for assessment requiring 2 Doctors and 1 approved mental health practitioner (Lloyd M, 2012). Section 2 of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) outlined capacity as being incapable of making decisions for yourself in relation to the matter because of an impairment or a disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain. • 3. Source Bias In Research What is a Good Source? Most students have written their fair share of papers that require multiple sources from multiple viewpoints. But how do you know which sources are reliable and which ones to avoid? With the amount of information out there, it is incredibly hard to know what is true or not or who is being incredibly biased or not. 1. Sources? According to the University of Illinois, different sources are better for different topics, it states that Newspapers are better for Daily local, national, and international news, events, and editorial coverage (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). While Scholarly or Academic Journals are better for Recent research on a topic and Focused, peer reviewed articles written by experts (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). • 4. They Must Find Their Own Wings They Must Find Their Own Wings Three Messages from The Writer Authors are very clever with their words. They are brilliant and humorous, or even dark and depressing. They spin tales of wonder and horror and delight, and they tell you of things that are true. They can show you of the way that things have to be. As such is life and there is no way we can change that. You cannot stand by and watch as time leaves you as nothing but dust. You cannot try to change everything for your power only goes so far. Richard Wilbur threw some rather interesting things into his poem, The Writer , and it just goes to show that even in the simplest of things, there is a limit to the affect you have on the situation. Even though some people of this world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Writer , R. Wilbur stated, I wish her a lucky passage...of life or death, as I had forgotten. I wish what I wished you before, but harder. You can t stand idly by and watch life tumble away and do nothing but close your eyes and wish. If you want something to be, you must take action and make everything you can of this short time and help all those in need. You may try as hard as you might, but there is only so much you can do for the ones you attempt to help. When you rise up from your place to try to help somebody, you cannot do all of the work. They re the ones who have to learn and they need help themselves. You can open the window to help the bird, but it is the one who has to fly out. You can give a child everything they need to succeed in life, but they have to be the ones to do something with all of that. As said in The Writer , ...For a helpless hour, we watched the sleek...iridescent creature batter against the brilliance, drop like a glove to the hard floor... Even though you try to help the people who are panicking and trying to escape, you can only do so much. If it has to be, then escape or redemption is not possible, due to the one in peril. In many poems, clever authors hide messages in the plot and in all of the words and similes. They tie things together with certain words that work together brilliantly. They show the world through their work the realities and hardships of life. They bring us to the knowledge that try as we might, there are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Effective Use Of Imagery In Marianne Moore s Poetry In Poetry , Marianne Moore explains that it is not that she does not like poetry, but it is the idea that poetry is simply not the same anymore. Poetry conveys ingenuity and candid ideas; it should be used to express one s authentic thoughts and feelings. Moore connects the use of imagery to expound on the interpretation that people do not appreciate or like what they do not understand. The poem purposely has no true structure, as it is written in free form with no rhyme scheme or pattern. Moore shows her frustration with the addressed autocrats of literature and displays that by using an ironic tone in the composition of the poem. Through Moore s use of imagery, she highlights people s lack of originality and perspective. In the line Hands that can grasp, eyes that can dilate, hair that can rise if it must, these things are important not because a high sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they are useful... The unrestrained arrangement of the poem connects with one of Moore s concluding lines, ...the raw material of poetry in all its rawness... (44). The speaker s use of enjambment represents the flow of her thoughts in the poem. Every word continued over the line break has its own emphasis. For example, there are only two periods in the poem, one in the first stanza and one at the very end. The period is placed in the quote, ...one discovers after it all, a place for the genuine. , which puts emphasis on the word genuine. • 6. How Does Homelessness Affect Our Society Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless (Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in. After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of homelessness in America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First! Village would not only strengthen UNL s Panhellenic Council s generous reputation, but also support the movement to end homelessness through providing a home and community to a young outcasted individual. Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has grown to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the homeless in surrounding cities of Austin. They have served over 5 million meals with the help of 19,000 volunteers. Their recent innovation (Community First!) is a 27 acre development that has been building a tiny home community for homeless people to buy for inexpensive prices. The village features miniature neighborhoods of homes, a church, garden, medical facility, market, movie theater, and other amenities. The project continues to grow as donations and volunteers come in for construction of housing and purchases of needed materials and goods. As of now, the village has housed almost 200 former homeless men and women. Mobile Loaves Fishes continues to house more people as construction is completed and word has spread to other major cities of the work this organization has founded and grown. This trend of societal self modification has predicated our prevailing view of activism, because social change is, and always has been, a part of human evolution. Nowadays we are faced with a polymorphous concept of activism that baffles everyone from academics to activists themselves. Often, these introduced species take over the environment, irrevocably changing it to fit their needs. The problem in this flawed model was that the electron, moving in a circular path, would be accelerating. Acceleration would create a change in magnetic field, which would in turn carry energy away from the nucleus. The electron would eventually slow and be captured by the nucleus. As The Rolling Stone began on this path, they put aside safeguards that would normally have sent the story to the bin, ignoring conflicting information from the other sources and only focusing on the main. • 25. Utopia By Thomas Moore s Utopia Thomas Moore s Utopia appears to be a perfect society where everyone is treated fairly and equally. However, Utopia is not as egalitarian as it appears. This can be determined through the implications about and restraints placed on women. The attitude toward women in Utopia may have been seen as acceptable in 1516, but in contrast with today s standards this approach in the book towards women is misogynistic and oppressive. In Utopia, values are critical to the preservation of peace in society. Yet, these values do not include fair and proper treatment of every individual. Utopia appears to be a land of no persecution but women still suffer and are harassed through the societal standards pressed upon them as a condition of their sex. While the land of Utopia at first appears to give more rights to women than many countries did at the time, it becomes evident that the treatment of women and their rights are not representative of the supposed egalitarian principles applauded in the novel. There are multiple cases in Utopia where conflict is evident between the treatment of men and the treatment of women. There are many moments in Utopia when it appears that the women are equal to men, only to turn around and suggest they are not. One of these examples is when Raphael Hythloday is discussing the terms and conditions of marriage, or rather, conditions prior to even the engagement. He says that Whether she is a widow or a virgin, the women is shown naked to the suitor by a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Pure Evil In A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah The human behavior is one that will haunt humanity forever. A Long Way Gone, written by Ishmael Beah, is an original non fiction story based on Ishmael s personal experiences in warfare. But, shockingly, he witnessed warfare from the small eyes of his teenage years. Having to experience one of the worst things in history, at such a young age, is terrible. War, in this case or in any case, relates to both human condition and human nature. Human conditions, in short, are things that that defines the human existence (birth, death, etc.) Human nature, close to human conditions, are how humans act naturally to their environment and others. The theme of A Long Way Gone ties strongly with both of these with a passion. It describes war as an art, with human condition as a canvas and human nature to paint in the fine details. The question asked is what Ishmael Beah s experience tells us about the meaning of the human being, and to answer we have to poke at some topics that we ve covered. The answers to the sole question include the hypothetical existence of pure evil, the important keys of human social life, and how war affects one s own mind. In the attempt to comprehend the meaning of being human, it s important to first understand what it must mean to be pure evil. If we can know what pure evil is, we can understand the conditions that brought Ishmael to do such horrid things himself. He starts with liberal democracy, which is a free and fair voting system that protects its citizen s liberties, much like the one found in the US. liberal democracy started in Western Europe and the US, and created rights and freedoms which secured government protection for citizens, as said by Zakaria, To secure these rights, it emphasized checks on the power of each branch of government, equality under the law, impartial courts and tribunals, and separation of church and state (Zakaria 26). The story recounts the period of the founding of the Roman Empire to the coronation of Claudius himself; but, as seen from the perspective of Claudius an adamant republican the Roman Empire is one that is doomed to fall, prophesied by the Sibyl of Cumae, due to political instability and dangerous power struggles. Similar to the Roman Empire of I, Claudius, the Britain of King Lear also falls into a state of political chaos akin to anarchy; the sudden abdication of Lear and his senility ultimately bring about the unravelling of his family, followers, and kingdom. The following power struggles in Rome and Britain lead to the corruption of many individuals in their respective time periods. Both I, Claudius by Robert Graves and King Lear by William Shakespeare, set during times of political turbulence, suggest that the competition for and possession of power can corrupt and alter individuals and society. Both works are set in times of political turbulence, times in which people would seize the opportunity to gain absolute power or at least an upper hand over others. It is a lot more common to see people use bearings to find angles and work out where an object or area might be located. • 35. Three Values of Greek Society in the Odyssey Essay The world is full of wonders, but nothing is more wonderful than man. This quote shows that the Greeks valued themselves, but also their intellect in which they know that the world about them is great. The Greeks valued beauty, art, intellect, honor, and truth; the list is long. Some of these values are shown through the story of the Odyssey, which tells of the adventures of Odysseus and his family. In order to understand Greek values and how they are portrayed in Greek society, one must examine how some values are portrayed in the Odyssey: hospitality, intellect, and beauty. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of a lack of hospitality was when Odysseus and his men came upon the Kyklopes , and the one eyed monsters treated them terribly. On first sight they tried to kill Odysseus and all his men. The Greeks also valued intelligence and intellect. Although there were certain areas in Greece that valued it more than others, such as Athens, the Greeks were generally an intelligent race of people. An example from the Odyssey is when Penelope (Odysseus wife, Telemakhos mother) tells her suitors that she needs to finish weaving a shroud for an old man before she marries. She proceeds to weave on her loom every day, but unravels it during the night, so that she will never have to marry. Another example is when Odysseus finally arrives home, and he disguises himself so he can question people about his home and the situation, all without being noticed. In this way he gained information without revealing himself. Another important Greek value is beauty. The Greeks strived for the idealistic form in everything they did: art, literature, beauty, and even in the sciences. The Odyssey portrays Penelope to be an older woman, but a beautiful older woman, having a hall full of suitors wanting to marry her. Another example is when Athena changes Odysseus appearance in certain situations, usually making Odysseus look young and less hardened by all his traveling. • 36. Limitations Of Athenian Democracy The ancient city state of Athens has long been celebrated for the foundation of the first democracy in the 5th century B.C.E. Though it was unrivaled by any other ancient civilization in the creation of a government that offered its citizens a way to directly participate in various democratic institutions and make their voices heard, it was far from perfect. Identifying the limitations of Athenian democracy at its peak and investigating some of the events that potentially let to its subsequent demise provides a more complete understanding of the weaknesses in the democratic system. While Athenian democracy granted ordinary male citizens unprecedented political power and is celebrated for being an innovative form of government in the ancient world and a model for contemporary democracy, it was inclusive of only a small portion of the Athenian population and had inherent flaws within the system that ultimately lead to its failure. Although Athens had a direct democracy, participation in the government was heavily restricted. Governmental participation was initially extended to the ordinary citizens of Athens in order to mitigate the resentment of the majority of people towards the aristocratic tier of society. Paper, Pollutants, Politics, and Precaution The paper industry here in Maine is struggling with mill closures and a bad reputation for being wasteful or bad for the environment. The issue of paper mills being an added stress to the environment is not unique to Maine. Mills in Wisconsin are also very wasteful, producing toxins in the air, soil, and water. In one river in Wisconsin, two hundred fifty thousand pounds of sediment is said to have been contaminated with manufactured organic chemicals used by the paper mills (Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). The Environmental protection agency has become involved in the issue by estimating the movement of about one hundred sixty thousand pounds of sediment from that river to adjoining lakes, river, and bays (Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). Restricting access from these locations would be pointless if a natural disaster occurred, possibly washing the contaminated soil to populated areas (Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). Not only does the paper industry s chemical waste enter the water systems, it also enters the air. The particulate matter entering the air includes carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxides and particulates. • 44. Personal Reflection On Bowling After having the opportunity to take a bowling class this semester, I have learned much more about bowling and how it can be used as an overall fitness program and healthy lifestyle. As almost anything in life bowling has it benefits and its weakness. It s worth to further explore them and discuss these ideas further. First we talk about how bowling can be played for fun with friends and family, we than talk about that it s competitive sport and it can be treated like many of the popular sports out there. Than we go on to talk about the benefits of using bowling as a fitness for a healthy lifestyle, and then we move on to talk some of the area where bowling doesn t help when we are talking about a healthy lifestyle, we also tie everything together at the end and compare using bowling as fitness sport to other sports, and finally we go on to give a personal reflection of my overall opinion on bowling and my future plans for playing bowling in my life. Bowling can be played for fun, and because of the nature of bowling, it is perhaps more suitable for playing for fun compared to other sports. The obvious advantage here is that it requires very little atheletism and physical ability to just play, this is not the case for sports like basketball, football, tennis and soccer. Where in other to have a fun game there is a certain standard of the athletic abilities and skills of the players involved. Unlike bowling where anyone can just play. Additionally, in bowling there is room for conversation and jokes more so than any of the sports mentioned above, so the ability for social interaction is certainly greater. It is easy to do when you are sitting comfortably and waiting for your turn. The situation itself actually encourages this, since it s the only logical thing to do. This is a huge advatange of bolwing and it makes this activity very fun. This is ideal for someone that has a problem with depression.Depression is an issues for many individuals so having a sport like this is a great since it allows friends and coworkers to get together on a weekly basis and interact with each other. It provides a platform where everyone can play the same game. Regardless of age athletic ability and previous experience of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
