To support the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) The government of Alberta through the ministry of Environment and Parks (AEP) collaborated with industry in 2010 to build the Reclamation Information System (RIS). To further the RIS system’s strength in delivering high quality spatial data through the application process, AEP again collaborated in 2017 to complete updates and guide the implementation of a web-based submission interface. The submission tool utilizes many technologies and our presentation will focus on the use of FME Server.

Starting small with operational changes like using biodegradable supplies and implementing a green data center helped them reduce costs and build their sustainability program step-by-step over many years.

The problem with unforgiving schedules is that it allows little to no room for error. Unfortunately, when errors do occur it can be catastrophic to a project. As was the case with Juniper Unmanned’s client, a global renewable energy company that develops, constructs, and operates wind farms, solar fields, and energy storage facilities.
In March of 2018, Juniper’s client found themselves in a predicament that began with defective land surveys and compounded into a compressed project schedule, deployed personnel, expensive heavy machinery sitting idle. The defective surveys, forty-four in total, were for access roads and pad sites for a wind farm development in Kansas. Logically, the surveys needed to be re-done immediately. Traditional survey methods would take three to four weeks to complete, which didn’t solve the immediate problem of deployed personnel, heavy machinery, dissolving budgets, and diminishing schedules.
Juniper Unmanned rapidly deployed its field operations team, equipped with unmanned aircraft systems), LiDAR sensors and GPS base stations. Four days and 30 UAS flights later, the data acquisition was complete. The client was delivered a 1’ contour map and accompanying topographic surface the following week. These deliverables enabled the client’s excavators and personnel to begin cutting in new access roads and pad sites for the wind farm project. The use of Juniper’s UAS LiDAR sensing and analytics solutions helped the client get the project back on track with minimal scheduling and budgeting impacts.

The FCC unit was constrained by its wet gas compressor, driven by a steam turbine. The combined process and utility model showed that while a lower cooling water temperature only reduced energy costs slightly, it improved the FCC yield substantially, resulting in $10.4 million more in annual profit despite higher energy usage. The conclusions were that energy systems have a large impact on both costs and process performance, and that KBC's integrated modeling approach provides a unified view of these interactions.

The roadmap will be implemented in four phases to upgrade web services, introduce workflow and decision tools, and improve mobility, collaboration and accessibility of GIS data. The final vision is for easy, device-agnostic access and contribution of Powerco asset data by users both online and offline.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
