Enhancing Worker Digital Experience: A Hands-on Workshop for Partners
Oracle OpenWorld 2012-Showcase on Middleware-NCTD Case study
1. Showcase: Middleware
Oracle Environmental Accounting and Reporting
through JD Edwards
North County Transit District San Diego, CA
Angela Miller, former Chief Technology Officer/Chief Sustainability Officer
founder, ecology.IT
2. The North County Transit District:
Public Transit for San Diego County
• North San Diego County, operating bus, commuter rail, light rail, and
paratransit systems
• 12.5 million riders; 107 million annual Passenger Miles Traveled
• 9 million annual Vehicle Miles over 550k annual Revenue Vehicle Hours
3. Public Transit – The Green Transit Option
comparison of emissions for transportation options
4. The North County Transit District:
Building Sustainable Public Transit
• Sustainability and public transit have a natural synergy –
economic, social, and environmental issues all inherently relevant
business model
• Plan focused first on cost reductions, then capitalizing on
opportunity, then building the cleanest, most scalable transportation.
Sustainability took on a much different meaning under dire financial
circumstances
5. History of the NCTD Sustainability Program
building one step at a time
7. Measuring and Benchmarking:
The Climate Registry, APTA, and NTD
• Wanted to measure using Industry-Standard Methodologies
• Became a member of The Climate Registry and filed first baseline year;
Became a signatory to the APTA Sustainability Commitment and filed
first annual report; also federally-mandated National KPIs
• In order to complete these goals, NCTD contracted with external
partners like Trust Element and Cathy Moran – significant consulting
8. Our Oracle JD Edwards Footprint
• We historically were a heavy maintenance operation. Owned JD
Edwards for Financials, Purchasing, and Inventory Management
• In 2011 upgraded successfully to 9.0 blue stack
• In 2011 replaced our 22-year old Prime system with HR/Payroll
• Added complexity: outsourced operations and maintenance
9. Implementing Accounting and Reporting:
Leveraging Existing Tools and Process
• Manual effort too expensive and not repeatable; issues with audit
• NCTD wanted to build on their 10-year JD Edwards Investment
• Needed a solution that included extensive data transformation
• Oracle Solution Seemed to fit the need
12. Power for EA&R Comes in the Middleware
ability to integrate data from non-ERP systems, suppliers
Integrating all liquid dispensing data – diesel, gas, CNG, oil, lubricants
Integrating all power data through downloads from utilities – over 175
meters, and now smart meters
Integrating power data from multiple solar installations in 15-minute
intervals
Integrating mileage data from two different systems, including a
CAD/AVL system that gives location data for every vehicle every
minute of every day
13. Planned Next Phase
Building more middleware-dependent data feeds
Operational supplier environmental data
Integration with automated data from diesel generators
Creating the KPI dashboard for environmental data (the one that
comes with EA&R is facility-based, not mode-based)
14. Environmental Accounting and Reporting:
Results
• OBIEE allowed for easier transformation of data
• Automation of data collection allowed for more frequent and cost
effective analytics; payback period for NCTD < 2 years
