Business architecture is a business driven disciplined process that decomposes the enterprise business goals and strategies, the assets and processes required to execute them as well as identify their impact on business goals. Business architecture provides a blueprint of the enterprise that provides a common understanding of the organisation and is used to align strategic objectives and tactical demands.
Slides from a presentation given by Paul Turner to meetings of IIBA UK on 16 July and 12 August 2014.
Much has been written about technical and solution architectures, without due attention being given to how these work together with the Business Architecture.
It is easy to believe that those who are involved in business analysis, requirements definition and systems modelling do not need to consider the Business Architecture at all. This could not be further from the truth. This talk explains the rationale behind Business Architecture, what its main components are and why Business Analysts should ensure that they understand it and the influence it is likely to have on their work.
During last few years, role of Enterprise Architecture has expanded from technical to strategic in an Organization. This slide deck presents: Using Enterprise Architecture in your Organization.

In April 2016, one of EA Learning’s experienced Business Architecture instructors, Judith Oja-Gillam, delivered a webinar to a community of Architects and IT professionals within the IASA network. Judith discussed the discipline of business architecture, its potential value to the business and some of the challenges it looks to address. The approaches discussed are linked closely to the content delivered in EA Learning’s Applied Business Architecture.
The latest version of the TOGAF standard has special emphasis on Business Architecture, Digital Trends, and Business Transformation beyond IT. Stuart Macgregor takes us through some of these changes to the TOGAF® 9.2 standard and discuss how they will benefit us.
Your Challenge
It is difficult to start the project, engage the right people, and find the necessary requirements to drive the value of an enterprise architecture operating model.
It is challenging to navigate the common enterprise architecture (EA) frameworks and right-size them for your organization.
The EA practice may struggle to effectively collaborate with the business when making decisions, resulting in outcomes that fail to engage stakeholders.
Our Advice
Critical Insight
The benefits of an EA program are only realized when all components of the operating model enable the achievement of the program goals and objectives. Many times organizations overplay the governance card while ignoring the motivational aspects that can be addressed through the organization's structure or stakeholder relations.
Info-Tech’s methodology ensures that all components of an EA operating model are considered to optimize the performance of the EA program.
Impact and Result
Place and structure your EA team to address the needs of stakeholders and deliver on the previously created strategy.
Create an engagement model by understanding each relevant process of COBIT 5 and make stakeholder interaction cards to initiate conversations.
Recognize the need for governance and formulate the appropriate boards while considering various policies, principles, and compliance.
Develop a unique architecture development framework based on best-practice approaches with an understanding of the various architectural views to ensure the creation of a successful process.
Build a communication plan and roadmap to efficiently navigate through enterprise change and involve the necessary stakeholders.
Object Oriented Business Capability Map - IIBA 2022 - Draft.pptxAustraliaChapterIIBA
Join IIBA® Melbourne as they host an online event specifically on how to develop business capability maps.
About this event
Ever wondered how to develop business capability maps? or perhaps you need a refresher?
Join Mohammad Mirkarimi Senior Business Architect at Capsifi and David Grindlay Principal Business Architect at Capsifi as they guide us through this session.
Captivated by art, science and business - Mohammad is trying to bring these three together. Moh is a drummer, a physics and biology enthusiast, and a business architect and analyst. He has studied Engineering, Business Management and Finance in academia. Also, equipped with IIBA, TOGAF and The Business Architecture Guild bodies of knowledge. Moh has worked as team member, leader and visionary in Management Consulting, Banking, Wealth, Insurance, Government, Telecom and Education industries.
With over 15 years of experience implementing software, David started his career as a business analyst in South Africa primarily in the financial services – insurance industry. In 2014 he moved over to Australia where he really started to observe the notorious gap between business strategies and project roadmaps as well as the downstream implications. More recently in his career, he gained broader exposure to other industries (Retail, Financial Services, Government and Hospitality) helping to structurally decompose business strategies, define the business landscape and help project teams (Business and Technical) realise and align on their common purpose. Today, David considers himself a Business Architect, doing whatever it takes to help companies realise their vision.
This session will contain two parts:
The first part is about learning the basics. There will also be time to review some theoretical stuff – but we promise it won’t be boring! We’ll review The Business Architecture Guild’s view by taking an Object-oriented approach to developing a business capability map
In the second part, we’ll pick a business (a simple one for this exercise, e.g. local cafe) and apply what we’ve studied to develop a business capability map for the chosen business.
At the end of the session, there will be time to share our learnings!
Introduction to Business Architecture - Part 2Alan McSweeney
The first part is available at: https://www.slideshare.net/alanmcsweeney/introduction-to-business-architecture-part-1.
This material describes conducting a specific business architecture engagement. The engagement process is generic and needs to be adapted to each specific application and use. The engagement is a formal process for gathering information and creating a new business function model based on an analysis of that information.
The objective is to create a realistic and achievable target business architecture to achieve the desired business change.
Business architecture is a structured approach to analysing the operation of an existing business function or entire organisation with a view to improving its operations or developing a new business function, with a strong focus on processes and technology. Business architecture is not about business requirements – it is about business solutions and organisation changes to deliver business objectives.
Value analysis with Value Stream and Capability modelingCOMPETENSIS
The new Archimate 3.1 has improved the strategy layer with major modeling objects related to value analysis: value stream and capability.
These objects are linked and answer major questions :
- [VALUE STREAM] What value do we deliver to customers ? What value do we want to deliver to customers ? This is the enterprise business model.
- [CAPABILITY] What operational model do we need to deliver value ? The capability model describes the operational model required to deliver value to customers.
You cannot succeed to transform a business model, enterprise activities without considering Value Stream & Capability analysis. Technology considerations are necessary but not sufficient.
Feel free to contact if you wish to get more support with your transformation projet.

Return of the Master Builder: For years, lawyers and insurers have told architects and engineers they cannot guarantee construction prices or completion dates or take responsibility for the actual construction of what they design. I chose to take a Topics course in my Fall 2008 semester which was a competition class for 6 teams from VCU and it also was a national competition. My team and I placed 2nd from VCU, and we were a finalist in the national IDEC competition. Our project goals were to create a business which would inhabit the Southside National Bank located in Saint Louis. The bank is currently undergoing historic renovations. The 14 floors above our given space is being converted into upscale apartments. The competition required us to create a business and a business plan for the first floor that would involve community activities. Then we were to create our own program based on the business we created.
Our mission was to design a crafts market which houses a studio center and an affordable ice cream parlor. The market is part of a restoration project, from the Art Deco era, which will benefit the community by providing an economic outlet and learning center for people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

The Central Role of Business Analysis in EAGraham McLeod
An inaugural talk to the International Institute of Business Analysts (SA). Discusses relationship between BA and EA and how important the BA role is in this context.
Deep Support for SOA in EA Frameworks & Meta ModelsGraham McLeod
SOA is a desirable goal for all it promises, but is seldom addressed at a fundamental level. This presentation discusses how to embed services in thinking, planning and EA disciplines via extended Meta Models and Frameworks.
Engaging Real Business People in Real Business ArchitectureGraham McLeod
We often hear I.T. Architects complain that the business strategy is not clear and that they cannot get
business owners and executives to participate in the EA activity, thus leaving the whole ship, in a
sense, “rudderless”. When we look at what is discussed with business people as “business architecture”
we are not too surprised. EA in most organizations (and in TOGAF) has “grown upwards from IT”
towards the business process management space. Few organizations are doing real Business
Architecture.
This talk is part evangelism for relevant and comprehensive Business Architecture as well as an
experience report, drawing upon work with organizations in telecommunications, health care,
banking, assurance, government and software industries over many years.
We will cover the scope of business architecture, a meta model for business architecture, how to deal with scenarios and “what ifs”, ideas on how to engage the real owners and executives of the business and illustrate the ideas with examples from experience. We hope to provoke some discussion on how
these ideas could be incorporated into TOGAF.

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
