     model of
   empowering
  online learning

R2D2 is…
•   practical
•   very easy to implement
•   a model for online design
•   a framework for integrating a variety of learning
    activities with the technology available in online
    learning today
This framework for online learning is called
R2D2 because it consists of four basic activities:
The “Star War” Model

• The idea is to empower the
  instructor, as well as learner, with
  a combination of task types which
  work together to create an
  effective course.

• Dr. Curt Bonk (Indiana University)
  likes to call R2D2, for obvious
  reasons, his “Star Wars” model.
How does the model work?

Once learners
                 have acquired
                   knowledge

  an activity
                         which guides them
                         to think about and   This can be carried out on
                           reflect on what    online blogs or through
                          they have learnt.

                                              entries, self-assessment
                                              type activities, etc.
The third step entails having the
 learner display the information in

In the last
                  stage,

               the learners
                take part in
               some sort of
               collaborative
                 hands-on
                  project
                                  doing a
  such as                      simulation or
working on a                    participating
   wiki,                         in a task-
                               based activity.
R2D2 is effective because…
1. It covers receptive & productive skills
2. It utilizes the context of the language in instructional,
   interpretive & presentational modes
3. It caters for multiple intelligences
4. It provides a variety of different learning activities
5. It keeps learners engaged & helps sustain motivation
6. It addresses diverse learner needs & preferences for
   learning which is so important in online learning
   where the students tend to be from varying
   backgrounds & of varying ages

R2D2 model of empowering online learning

  • 2. R2D2 is… • practical • very easy to implement • a model for online design • a framework for integrating a variety of learning activities with the technology available in online learning today
  • 3. This framework for online learning is called R2D2 because it consists of four basic activities:
  • 4. The “Star War” Model • The idea is to empower the instructor, as well as learner, with a combination of task types which work together to create an effective course. • Dr. Curt Bonk (Indiana University) likes to call R2D2, for obvious reasons, his “Star Wars” model.
  • 5. How does the model work? START WITH TEXT Note that text does not uploaded by necessarily have to refer to the the instructor written word. Text can also be in video or podcast format. found on the net through web searches produced by other students
  • 6. Once learners have acquired knowledge through their online readings of text, they are given an activity which guides them to think about and This can be carried out on reflect on what online blogs or through they have learnt. reflective writing, journal entries, self-assessment type activities, etc.
  • 7. The third step entails having the learner display the information in or some other a timeline a chart visual representation
  • 8. In the last stage, the learners take part in some sort of collaborative hands-on project doing a such as simulation or working on a participating wiki, in a task- based activity.
  • 9. R2D2 is effective because… 1. It covers receptive & productive skills 2. It utilizes the context of the language in instructional, interpretive & presentational modes 3. It caters for multiple intelligences 4. It provides a variety of different learning activities 5. It keeps learners engaged & helps sustain motivation 6. It addresses diverse learner needs & preferences for learning which is so important in online learning where the students tend to be from varying backgrounds & of varying ages
