“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Question Two
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Our media product is a British Social Realism
film, in order to create this we had to use the
conventions of the genre to achieve this. This
genre of film holds a lot of representation in
order to appeal to the audience and help them
to relate to it.
3. We used a black young boy giving him the role of a
drug dealer which is seen as quite a stereotype for
young boys these days, I believe we portrayed it in a
realistic way with him riding a bike in order to complete
his job. The bike represents a sense of journey and also
with him being a ‘drug runner’ it relates to the title.
4. The character being a drug dealer represents the
lifestyle of the under class/working class as that is his
way of providing for himself. The fact that he is alone in
every shot represents a sense of isolation within the
character; throughout the film the audience would be
able to see the distant relationships with his parents
and his run down home representing his class.
5. Throughout the opening montage all of the
scenes are set in blocks, council estates, parks
and the streets all conveying an urban, gritty
atmosphere. This represents a poor area and
the working class lifestyle.
6. The shot of the children playing football shows
their innocence juxtaposed to his criminality. It
could it also be seen as foreshadowing the
children’s future as they could grow into the
lifestyle of the main character.
7. We used a shot of the boy walking up the stairs; we
deliberately did this in order to represent his journey as he
could have used the lift yet the walking up the stairs is more
effective and represents the journey more. We do this as well
with shots of him riding the bike because they give it a more
urban grittiness as well as the representation of a journey.
