Representations in our music video
1. REPRESENTATIONS IN
OUR MUSICVIDEO
In our music video for ‘The MotherWe Share’ we have decided to show a visual
representation of family. The mother we share is a song about people letting each
other go and moving on as they are bad for each other, and that it is only the
mother they share that’s keeping them together. We have decided to go against
this and use the lyrics in the song to promote family. We have done this by adding
in narrative aspects to the video, where we see a young girl alone, wandering
around hopelessly, showing that she feels alone and helpless. Many people feel
this way in todays society, as if they are alone and have no where to turn, but
people always have their family, whether they are relatives or not.We wanted to
show this in our video, by having the character feel low, to the point of no return
but then to be brought back with the help and company of her relative/friend.
We are setting the video in a studio and also outside on a field or park, to show
that people can return to their roots/ childhood to find their way back. The
character will first be seen alone on a park, but will then be seen with her relative
or friend at the end to show that she does indeed have someone to go back to.We
will be using lights a lot in the music video, as we can then represent the dark place
that people sometimes go to, to then only find the light at the end. We may also
use silhouettes and other lighting techniques to show the loneliness and
desperation that some people feel.
We decided to have a female lead for our band, as we wanted to dismiss the
stereotype of women being the weak or lonely ones in society, and to also show
that men can feel the same way too, and that they aren’t always the strong leads
people expect them to be.
The styling in this video will also be important as we want the narrative character
to be seen as shy and scared, we may do this by having her wear a very large
jumper which she can hide in or feel safe under. We also wanted to show that a
woman does not need a man to be strong, so we may have the relative or friend to
be another woman, rather than a stereotypical boyfriend to help her.
