Jushna Evaluation Question 1
1. Question 1) In what ways does your
media product use, develop or
challenge forms and convention of
real media products?
By Jushna Begum
2. Inspiration:
I was initially inspired by the films Black Swan,
American Psycho and Insidious for my own
media products. In addition I was inspired by
the style of colours/patterns/dark lighting etc
from Tim Burton and the style of James Wan
films too
3.
4. Use of Camera Shots:
The camera shots used in my film opening were
lots of close ups in different angles of the
props/the protagonist face etc, the shots
abstract just like the film Black Swan this draws
the audience into the microcosmic world from
the static montage shots to the fast paced
shots/editing half way through the film opening.
This is proven in Black Swan of when she dances
the editing gets faster and the camera
shots/movement are faster/panning are faster
5. Static Montage Shots from “Clairvoyant” – Slow paced editing
Faster Paced Editing/Faster Panning Shot when she’s dancing
6. Use of the Titles:
The titles that I created were inspired by insidious
especially the structure/order and how they fade
in/out. I definitely implemented them in my own
work, to create suspense and slow down time with
the slow paced editing, this emphasised along with
the music really well. The only thing I developed
within the titles was the font, colour and size of the
titles, instead of going along originally with the colour
red titles from Insidious I decided to go with white as
there was too much red going along in the
background, so it would have been hard to see the
titles
8. Use: Exposition of narrative/themes
In my film opening, I used typical themes of the
thriller narrative, which are to do with mystery
and how you resolve those mysteries. In Black
Swan the narrative is quiet abstract and links in
with the black swan it self, this leads to enigma
codes and helps the audience understand the
thriller conventions especially with the
narrative. Also with the themes betrayal/death
were used in Black Swan as well as in my own
media product
9. Development: Music/Sound
The music was inspired by Insidious when the
titles appeared there were non-diegetic sound
which sounded quite eerie. Particularly, when
the film name “Insidious” came up there was a
discordant sound and I kind of wanted to
replicate that for my own film name
“Clairvoyant” but it wasn’t exactly the same as
Insidious though. Furthermore, I wanted to
challenge the juxtaposition of the music/sound
with the shots and see if it would well with each
10. Development: Mise en Scene
I developed some of the props used in the my
film opening from iconography of the thriller
genre such as the a stereotypical prop e.g.
knife in this case, I used the paint brush to try
to signify the paint brush as the knife as well
as the costume. I also tried to go with the
stereotypical artist outfit by definitely having
the apron but changing up the actual clothing
of making it really casual with her hair in a
bun
12. Challenges:
Insidious is considered to be a horror/thriller, so I
implemented stuff such as titles/sounds/music
and style of shots from the horror genre to the
thriller genre which made my film opening
much better by doing so
