day society.The main themes represented in the genre are
money, drugs, prostitution, sex, alcoholism, class, religion
and political views, all things that are common within
harsh reality.
• Social realism films tend to show the struggle and
hardships of life rather than the happiness.The narratives
are set up to portray the everyday lives of people.
3. Location.
The films are usually set in urban, gritty areas, typically counsil
estates and blocks showing characters being people from
working backgrounds.

4. Typical characters:
• The typical main character in a social realism film tend to be poor from a working
class background, resulting in them turning to violence or breaking the law in
order survive
• For example in “Goodbye Charlie Bright” Charlie is a carefree boy who enjoys a
lifestyle of partying, taking drugs and having sex, the boys do a house robbery to
get some extra cash but land them selves in trouble when they find a gun and
wake the owner of the house.
• Social Realism genre films tend to use unknown actors especially British social
realism as it makes the film more realistic and the audience can relate to it more.
The actors always tend to be young between the ages of 13-20
5. Target audiences
• The target audiences for social realism are different based
on the narrative and actors in the film. For example if it is a
film like ‘Bullet Boy’ which is about gang life and the
hardships of trying to escape it, it would be aimed at a
younger audience. In contrast with films like ‘Billy Elliot’
which is a family film but contains elements of social
realism as we as the audience see his struggle with his
family and his sexuality.
