1) Planning improved from the preliminary task to the final product. For the preliminary, the first idea was chosen without much thought, but for the final film factors like time management and feasibility were considered. 2) Research is important, but it was lacking for both the preliminary and final tasks. More research could have led to a better developed final thriller. 3) Filming skills improved from preliminary to final. Wider knowledge of techniques like shot types and lighting were applied, making shots more sophisticated in the final product.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

2. Planning
The progression with planning from the preliminary task to now has been great. Firstly,
when doing the preliminary task we went with the first idea straight away without even
really thinking about it, however when making the final film we took things into
consideration.These were things such as time management, realistically how we could do
them and whether it would be professional enough.When planning the preliminary things
such as story boards or mind maps didn’t come to mind or take any type of priority, this
led to confusion as to what we could do next and how we could progress. However, when
making the final film we ensured that all of these things were done early on as it meant
that it was clear to each of us what we were going to be doing. Due to us knowing each
other better by the time we made the final product it meant that we were able to
communicate more effectively and openly talk about ideas as we were a lot more familiar
with each other.

3. Research
I have learnt that research is paramount between the space of the
preliminary task and the final thriller. I didn’t do much research when
making the preliminary task but also when making the final product.This
meant that it wasn’t as good or developed as it could have been. Even
though I did multiple case studies I struggled to find thrillers that I knew I
would enjoy and could link to the final product that we made. However,
other simple films not particularly of the thriller genre gave me inspiration,
for things such as angles or transitions.

4. Shooting
I think that my shot types and camera skills improved sufficiently when filming the final
thriller.This was due to my wider knowledge of things such as the 180 degree rule, and the
shot types and what they can connote.The camera was still the same however, however
the types of shots became more sophisticated, as we tried using shots such as tilt shots
and low angle shots, and using them at the appropriate times.This may be to show status
or to get the audience to understand the desolateness of the location.
Also when shooting the use of things such as lighting became more important in the final
production to what it was in the preliminary, we attempted things such as chiaroscuro
lighting.

5. Feedback and Genre
I believe that my knowledge has expanded from the time between the
preliminary and the final product, this was due to my ability to use different
styles of lighting and shots. It also meant that I was able to notice and
apply conventional character types to my own thriller, for example,
Rhiannon being seen as a potential femme fatal.These character types and
shot types were not seen in the preliminary. I also developed my case
studies throughout from the feedback given from my teachers as well as
the feedback given from my preliminary.This meant I was able to act on
the things I could improve on and develop my ability and knowledge and
apply it to the final product, making it more enjoyable to an audience.
