Q7. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL
YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO FULL
PRODUCT?
Comparison to school mag
and my final product.
SCHOOL FRONT COVER VS FINAL
COVER
I used a plain red background for the school cover which
looked unconventional for a magazine which is why I went for
a more conventional plain white which is heavily used in a lot
of magazine covers
Originally, I made my masthead small and not cover the top the
page looking unprofessional and hardly standing out. I changed
this for my final front cover and made the masthead bold and large
taking up the top of the page with a sharp and bold font with a red
colour making it stand out on the magazine shelves. I also
incorporated the cover photograph by making it stand over the
masthead which attracts more attention on the cover photograph,
with the first cover I had a lot of blank space because I didn’t use
the cover photograph and the masthead together to fill up the
cover.
The school front cover photograph was cropped poorly, the final product is much
more smooth and professional as I now used the magnetic lasso tool and a
combination of blur and sharpen tool to create a clean image. Furthermore, the
image itself didn’t have any effective angles or camera shots as it was just a normal
morbid medium shot. With my final product, I decided to take into account the
effects a photo can have on the reader and used different angles and length shots.
The image is a close up which makes the reader feel more intimate with the cover
star. The image is also a low angle shot which makes the photograph look more
intimidating to the reader, particularly with the facial expression and eye contact.
All these effects were achieved by simply changing the angle of range of the shot
which is something I failed to consider in my first magazine. I also considered the
purpose of the magazine more by changing the subjects attire, I did not consider or
even change what the subject was wearing for my first magazine. With the final
product, I had my subject have an outfit that would relate to the demographic of the
magazine which I didn’t consider in my first cover. I used the attire to create an
impression of the cover star to the demographic of being potentially intimidating or
even laid back making them want to read more about him. The photograph in the
first cover had no reader appeal whatsoever and therefore wasn’t a successful front
cover photograph compared to the one on the final product.
SCHOOL FRONT COVER VS FINAL
COVER CONT.
For the cover line on my school cover I used a plain, even
boring font which was the same font used throughout (apart
from the masthead). In addition to this, the cover line does not
stand out as much as it should as it has a similar font size to
the plugs and the same size as the masthead. However the
typography is somewhat enticing, the attraction of the cover
line is still lacklustre. For my final product I made sure to
improve my cover line by making it a font which was bold and
stood out, have a consistent colour scheme with house style,
and made it larger then the rest of the text but smaller then
the masthead. I added an after affect with an outer glow on the
cover line to further make it stand out above the picture
enticing the demographic to read about the feature far more
then in the school magazine. Furthermore, the cover line in the
school mag has nothing to do with the cover photograph
drawing no attention to the main feature of the magazine. The plugs in my school mag were not very attracting and were
repetitive with the same punctuation and typography. For my
final product I made improvements to my plugs by making
each one different and use much more enticing typography.
The plugs in the final product are much more enticing to the
reader wanting to read more about the feature by describing
the person using words like “legendary” and “finally” making
the person seem important and worth a read. Furthermore, I
avoided repetion of the plugs like in my school mag by making
each plug unique and different, e.g. I didn’t start each plug
with a name or “Mr” and didn’t use a exclamation mark for
every plug.
SCHOOL CONTENTS VS FINAL
CONTENTS PAGE
For my school contents page, I did title the page correctly,
however there is no evidence of the magazines house style. I
made sure to include the mags logo in the title and keep the
font and colour scheme consistent to the house style which I
didn’t consider in the first contents page. Furthermore, the
title on the school page is not very large and enticing and
doesn’t take up the whole top of the page like the final
contents page title does. The same colour and font as the rest
of the text also doesn't help the title stand out like it should so
I did made sure to change the font and colour from the rest of
the text in my final product. The contents of the contents page itself in the school mag
gave nothing away about the features of the magazine and
therefore were not enticing anyone to read about them. For my
final product I added extra information on each feature to let
the reader know more about the article and want to read about
it. Furthermore I made the headline of the each article in bold
and the page number in red following house style and making
it more presentable which I didn’t consider in my school mag.
The images in my school mag despite being of the school,
were not relevant to any of the articles and therefore shouldn’t
have to be there. Furthermore, they weren’t labelled with a
page number and had not relevance to the articles and
features. For my final product, I made sure that each image
was labelled with the matching page number, made it stand
out and made it relevant to the article and the features as well
as having the same person from the front cover on the
contents.
