Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 1. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product? By Aamna Arshad
- 2. In order to create my product I first had to plan what I was going to do, for example the names, sell lines, content etc. I then had to start getting productive, by taking my pictures of the artists. After I got the pictures I had to make my magazine, which included using software and little bit of playing around to get used to it. I then had to get feedback from teachers to help me improve my magazine and make it look better. What is the process you went through to create your product?
- 3. I used an SLR when taking my pictures, when taking them you had to be careful with what shot you were taking, for example long shot, mid shot or close up. This would help identify what mu music magazine genre is and what it may be about. For all my pictures I used manual focus and no flash, since the rooms I used to take the pictures in, was already brightly lit. How have you used an SLR or bridge camera? What have you learnt about using it- any specific in- camera techniques (manual focus, using flash)?
- 4. I had a software already downloaded on to my computer called ‘Gimp’ since I didn’t have photo shop at home and I only used an online website which was ‘Fotor’ and that was to change the lighting of an image and make it look like an album cover, which helped a lot. What post production programs have you used such as Photoshop or any desk top publishing software?
- 5. I used many web applications to produce my work, I mainly used SlideShare to produce my work. For one part of my evaluation I used PowToon to produce my work using it’s features. Also I used YouTube to talk a little more about my target audience. I used these web applications to show my skills and produce my work in different ways to make it look more appealing. How have you used web applications and online forums to showcase your research, planning, drafting, final products and evaluation (prezi, slideshare, Youtube, powtoon and of course wikispaces)?
