Interstellar
Made by Camille, Hayco, Joao, Federica, Caterina, Arianna
What causes the huge waves on the ‘water
planet’?
• On our planet the tides are caused by the moon. The moon has a
just a little bit of attraction. This causes our little tides and quite
small waves.
• On the Water Planet the waves are caused by Gargantua. This
black hole generates a lot of attraction. This is the reason for
these big waves.
• Miller’s Planet surface is characterized by the constant movement
of water. Huge waves are caused by
a seismic event due to the intense gravity produced by the black
hole. These forces generate the incessant swells and the
propagation of waves.
• The waves are very big, but if you compare the two forces from
the moon and Gargantua. You’re able to understand that these
waves are pretty normal.
• They followed the rules of nature and didn’t exagerate.
Does it really exists?
• Gargantua doesn’t exist but there are many black holes.
Gargantua could have existed.
• They created Gargantua in this film, they recreated a real black
hole with the same symptoms.
• There is proof of black holes but none for Gargantua.
WHY DID THEY DECIDE TO CALL THE BLACK HOLE GARGANTUA?
THE BLACK HOLE TAKES THE NAME FROM A NOVEL CALLED «THE LIFE
OF GARGANTUA AND OF PANTAGRUEL», OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY
WRITTEN BY FRANCOIS RABELAIS. THE MAIN CHARACTER
GARGANTUA, IS A GIANT KNOWN FOR HIS FORMIDABLE HUNGER. SO
JUST LIKE THE BLACK HOLE, THIS GIANT DEVOURS EVERYTHING HE
FINDS.
• WHICH FORCE CAUSES THE TIDES?
• On Miller’s planet the tides are caused by the black hole
Gargantua. This process is what happens with the Moon on the earth, but
the Moon is once much closer to the Earth and we have huge tides.
These tidal forces cause planetary distortions (the planet becomes a sort
of football shape) and as the Moon spins, it is essentially being kneaded
by the tidal forces. In the case of Interstellar there is a sort of
gravitational attraction too: Miller's planet is the equivalent of the Moon
and Gargantua is the equivalent of the Earth.
• Practically the Gargantua’s attraction causes on Miller’s planet
oscillations: when the planet moves to the right, Gargantua pulls it back
to the left. This constant rocking back and forth on Miller’s planet under
Gargantua’s intense tidal force means that those gigantic waves slosh
about on the planet surface.
• WHY ARE THE WAVES SO HIGH?
• THE MOON’S GRAVITY DOES NOT ONLY PULL ON THE EARTH’S MANTLE
BUT ALSO ITS OCEANS. THE WATER OVER THE SUBLUNAR SIDE IS CLOSER
AND IS PULLED TOWARDS THE MOON FASTER THAN THE SOLID MANTLE
BENEATH, CREATING A BULGE. ON THE OPPOSITE (ANTIPODAL) SIDE,
SOMETHING DIFFERENT HAPPENS. THE WATER IS NOT PULLED AS MUCH AS
THE SOLID ROCK BELOW AND GETS “LEFT BEHIND.” THIS RESULTS IN A
WATER BULGE ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE EARTH.
• THE SAME THING HAPPENS ON MILLER’S PLANET BUT WITH MUCH
GREATER EFFECT. GARGANTUA IS MUCH BIGGER THAN OUR SUN–ABOUT
100 MILLION TIMES MORE MASSIVE–AND ITS TIDAL FORCE IS MUCH
GREATER THAN WHAT WE SEE BETWEEN THE MOON AND THE EARTH. THE
RESULT IS THE 1.2 KILOMETER (0.75 MILES) HIGH WAVE IN THE FILM.
