Who would be the audience for
your media product?

Media AS – Thriller Opening Sequence
2. Introduction
• When researching about a target audience for our media
piece, we found out that we would need to look at any
themes or issues that our chosen target audience would
like to see in a thriller movie. As a group, we decided that
young adults/teenagers would be a great target audience
to look into, and so we made sure to base our film
keeping in mind what our audience would enjoy
watching, and also what is suited to their age group.
3. • When we conducted to do a questionnaire about thriller movies, our
results displayed to us that people who took the survey were 100%
aged 16-18. Realising this, it made sense to chose our primary target
age as being 15+ and under 25; teenagers/young adults. Keeping the
rating at a 15 allowed us to use more graphic themes to shock our
audience, which couldn’t be done as successfully at a rating of 12 or
lower. Thinking about the thriller movies in general, most of the
movies are often rated 12 and above due to strong themes a younger
audience wouldn’t enjoy as much, and could frighten them. Using
actors of the age range, would also allow our audience to being able
to relate and associate themselves with those characters. However
when looking at audience theories, it could become a concern if
anyone tried to replicate producing the actions that are presented in
the film.
4. • After, we then looked at the key interests of our audience
to get a clearer understanding of what they would like to
see for entertainment purposes. Researching popular
thrillers aimed at teens, the results revealed a link
between higher ratings for action thrillers. A good
example of this would be the very successful movie, ‘The
Hunger Games’ as it contained a lot of action and thrill.
As our target audience were around the same age-group
as us, it made it easier for us to understand what the
audience might similarly like and also dislike; especially
what we found appealing in a thriller movie.
