Question 2 – Hostage evaluation
1. QUESTION 2 – HOSTAGE EVALUATION:
HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS?
2. SOCIAL GROUPS: DEFINITION
• Definition of a social group: In the social sciences, a social group has
been defined as two or more people who interact with one another,
share similar characteristics, and collectively have a sense of unity.
Other theorists disagree however, and are wary of definitions which
stress the importance of interdependence or objective similarity.
3. REPRESENTATION IN HOSTAGE:
• In Hostage, it was quite hard to represent a social group as we only had
Billy’s character to work with to do this. So, we tried to make Billy’s
character as relatable as possible putting him in stylish clothing such as
black skinny ripped jeans which are a big trend at the moment, with
casual trainers, and a skin coloured/light pink shirt/jumper and a denim
jacket over the top, this gives the outfit a usual but edgy look to it,
something that might appeal to the followers of fashion and people who
take care with their appearance. We also used a snap back and back
pack and a Nikon camera to help connect with our audience and show
some representation of photographers.
4. MYSTERIOUS FIGURE
• For my character there isn’t much you can say, I’m dressed in all black,
typical of an emo style, but my character was mainly used to create a
sense of mystery and tension within the opening sequence. You could
say that my character is a representation of the people who are quite
closed off, outcasts. Dressed in all black with my hoodie up there isn’t
much you can say but you could read into it closer and look at the
subtext of the character, even if the mysterious figure only appears for a
couple of seconds.
5. CAPTURER
• Archie’s character the capturer was dressed in a lumberjack jacket and
black jeans, this was to give him a sense of purpose and belonging to
the place he was in when he took Billy, (The woods) almost as if it was an
alibi as to why he was there and so it wouldn’t see suspicious. Archie’s
character could represent the guy being paid to do the dirty work, which
is commonly seen in thrillers. An average guy who just wanted to earn a
bit of money? We can leave the audience to interpret that one.
6. CONCLUSION TO QUESTION 2:
• In conclusion, Billy’s character is the most representative of a popular
social group of people and we can tell this by the way he dresses and
the way he takes care in his presentation.
• My character the mysterious figure represents the outcasts in the world
who people don’t know much about, who are closed off to others,
mysterious.
• Archie’s character represents the average guy employed to do someone
else’s dirty work, this is quite common in thrillers, someone who’s
identity we don’t know and only appear to put the main character in
danger or to capture them.
