2. WHAT IS REPRESENTATION?
Representation is the presentation of a group or individual that is perceived or appears as normal/reality.
Directors and writers use representations to connote certain things to the audience however this may be biased
depending on their views on a certain market segments.
Moreover, Representation is used to drive the film’s plot forward. This is than manipulated in order to show basic
psychological problems that are associated with that certain group basic stereotype.
This is also than showed throughout locations, props and the plot itself. A common example of this is how
teenagers a portrayed negatively as older writers and prodcers have a negative stereotypical view of modern
day teenagers.

3. SOCIAL GROUPS USUALLY AFFILIATED WITH
URBAN CRIME THRILLERS
In Bullit, The social groups represented in this movie is caucasian thieves
who are articulate, smart and wealthy. This allows them to look
professional and portray to the audience that despite they are meant to be
portrayed negatively; They will be the core positive focus of the film
In TOP 123, The social groups represented in this movie is a coloured
working class citizens as well as, just like bullit, caucasian thieves who
are articulate, smart and wealthy. This allows them to look professional
but in this case portrayed to the audience negatively unlike the other
social group who is the ‘hero in the film.’
In Tower Heist, The social groups represented in this movie is a are
multicultural and have a wide range of ethnicity. This allows the thieves to
look ordinary which mainly has to do with the complex plot of the film.
However, the black male in this film is portrayed negatively as the thieve
and other characters as working class citizens

Thief 1: the first subordinate planner/
robber wears high end clothes in order to
blend in with the luxurious shopping
center. In the end of the title sequence
however he wears a mask and dark
clothing which connotes that he is about to
do something suspicious.
He also has a Arabic/eastern African
descent.
This representation is negative but in a
way that is not too worrying challenges
common themes and stereotypes that
thieves cannot be multi ethnical.

perceived at all besides his fingers which
show his skin color. This represents him as
restricted and mysterious.
This representation is negative but in a
way that makes him taken seriously as he
is portrayed as a mastemind and
challenges common themes and
stereotypes that masterminds are
caucasian.
