• What is representation?: - Representation is the term used to describe aspects of a
visual arts that are created by the director/writers point of view on a theme or topic
to communicate a certain message using the four technical areas: mise en scene,
camera, lightening and editing.

•What are the social groups that are being represented in our film?: - There are two
types of social groups being represented in our thriller movie; the first is a normal
middle class man and the second is a dark, cynical cultist.
“Middle class man”

• The first social group to be represented in our thriller film is a “normal middle class
man” coming home from work. In the beginning of the film opening, we see the “normal
middle class man” walking into his house whilst onto the phone to his daughter. The way
he speaks to his daughter would give off the impression that he his also a family man.
the lightening in this small scene is bright and shows normality. The mise en scene in
this scene is quite simple; its just normal clothing suitable for his career (a primary
school teacher), glasses, and a normal suburban area/house. There are quite a few mid-
shots and long shots to let the audience see how normal and conventional he really is. I
think altogether, we have represented “normal middle class” men positively.
“Dark, cynical cultist”
 • The second type of social group that is being represented is the “dark, cynical
cultist”. We first see this type of character once the “normal middle class man”
has entered his house and shut the door. Once he has shut the door, the
lightening immediately becomes darker to show his darker side coming
through. The inside of the house seems like a normal suburban household but
as the character walks into the front room, we can see that things are not as
they appear. Using mise en scene, the items around the house show his “dark,
cynical cultist” side coming through; there are swords, satanic bibles, blood,
dead bodies and cult like robes in specific places. There are loads of close ups
in these scenes to create tension and show how his facial expressions have
changed along with his type of character. We used jump cuts/match cuts to
show his fluid movements while he goes into the bathroom. Unlike the first
social group, I think we represented this one negatively. We sort of showed
that by being in a cult you have have two personalities and hide one of them.
We also showed how dark and cynical one has to be to be in a cult.
