1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Chris Hinton 12JCL
There is a key fact about the
magazine. This stands out and
lets people know about this
key fact about the magazine.
Large and bold masthead that
makes the reader knows
what the magazine is about.
It will also attract people who
are fans of rugby.
Large and bold texts that
attract the reader and make
them want to buy the
magazine instead of putting
the magazine back down.
Small attractive little titles that
attract people in and make
you want to buy it just
because it has some
interesting information.
There is a standout title on the
front page, this will attract
people, but the title is on the
person. However, it is not over
the persons face.
The type of shot is a medium
shot. This is the normal type of
shot for a magazine.
The person is looking at the
camera, therefore this means
he is inviting you in, and it
attracts you to buy the
magazine.
There is a barcode and a price so the
public know how much to pay if they
want to buy the magazine.
MAGAZINE
FRONT COVER
The layout of the
magazine is well
done because
there is not text
covering the face
on the magazine.
Date and issue number to let the person
know when it is out and how many issue
there have been
There is a clear masthead at the
top of the page. This stands out to
the audience and lets them know
what the title of the music
magazine is because of the
colours used e.g. white against
the black and red text.
In the centre of the music magazine
there is a clear line that stands out to
the audience. The white and red
stands out well because they are
bright and vibrant colours.
The figure/model is looking into the
camera or is looking straight at the
person who is reading the music
magazine. Therefore, he is inviting
you to read the magazine because of
the way he is looking at you through
the camera
The type of shot used to medium
shot, this follows a pattern to other
music magazine and other
magazines that are already out there
and selling.
Large bold text is used on the
front cover of my music magazine
and it stands out to the audience
who are reading this music
magazine because of the colours
that are used e.g. the black text
against the white background, this
stands out ot the audience who
are reading the music magazine
Date and issue numbers is on the
front cover of the music magazine
and does not distract the reader
who is reading this music
magazine. The box also contains
a barcode and the website so the
audience know where to go for
more information.
The front cover of my music
magazine contains small text that
stands out against a black
background. However this text will
be seen last because we read
from left to right and up and down.
Therefore because it is near the
bottom the audience will see this
piece of information last.
The layout of the music magazine
has been done so no text covers the
artists face because this can
disrespect the artist and make the
whole music magazine look untidy
and rushed.
There are titles that spilt up the
magazine. This will help people
get to their favourite part of the
magazine.
There is page numbers so it is
easier to get to a certain part of
the magazine instead of going
through the whole magazine.
The pictures are the main attraction
on the contents page, also they lead
you to that page because it contains a
page number so you can get to that
page.
The text have bright coloured boxes,
this is so the text stands out to the
reader. This will lead the reader
straight to a bright section because it
will attract the eye.
The page numbers are bright red because red is a colour that will attract
the eye and will also stand out to the reader who is looking through the
magazine.
The badge of
Barcelona will
attract fans of
Barcelona to see
what their
manager says in
this magazine.
But also, fans
from around the
world will want
to hear from one
of the best
managers in
modern football.
Contents
Page
The titles have been split, therefore
it is easier for the audience to read
through the text and find the piece of
information they want to find, instead
of looking through the whole text to
find it.
On the contents page there are page
numbers that help the audience get
to the correct page they want to get
to. This makes it easier because you
do not want the audience looking
through the whole text just for one
page of the music magazine.
The pictures on the contents page
could have been more interesting
and do not excite me in any way.
Therefore, if I was to go back I would
make the photos look more exciting
and better, this would improve the
magazine dramatically
The text on the contents page needs to
stand out more to the user. Maybe, I should
have followed the other contents page and
use bright colours so they stand out to the
audience. Another improvement would be to
add bright colours to the numbers, this is
because I want them to stand out better to
the audience.
The massive contents page text stands out to
the audience who are reading this magazine. It
also stands out because of the white text
against the black background of the magazine.
There is a massive masthead of
the title of the music magazine.
This is a massive positive
because it lets the audience know
and remind them what th name of
the music magazine is. The title
and slogan also stand out to the
reader of the music magazine
because of the black and red text
against the white background. If
you do this then the text will be
clearer to see if you who opposite
colours e.g. white against black.
Double Page Spread
What kind of information is included in the interview? What does the artist talk about? How is the interview relayed to the
reader? In the interview Lady Gaga talks about her lifestyle and how she performed on the royal variety show in 2009. The
interview is placed out to the reader with the most important text on the left hand side because everyone reads from left to
right, so therefore the magazine has placed it out this way. The information that is included entertains the reader and
makes them want to carry on reading the magazine because it will interest many other people and her fans as well.
What is the purpose of the photograph of the artist? Why is the mise-en-scene important? How has the picture been
edited? What is the effect of the artist looking at the camera? How much space does the image take? The purpose of the
this type of photo is to attract the audience and let the audience know who this interview is all about. The style used has
been made black and white, this is because it follows the same style as the rest of the pages included the red, black and
white theme. The mise-en-scene of the image is that she is against a plain white background to fit in with the style of the
magazine of red, black and white. The type of shot used is a close up this is because this shot will show the most detail
and will suit the type of page with image. This image will also attract people to read the magazine because Lady Gaga is
basically inviting you in to read the interview. This effect is used because it lets the audience know who is the the artist, but
it also attracts the audience in, but it also invites in. This also means it invites them to read the interview.
Why is the representation of the artist important? How is it consistent throughout the entire feature and with the front
cover? The representation of the artist is extremely important because with pictures/photos of the artist being labelled all
overt the magazine then people will know who is the main feature of this magazine. The size of the image of Lady Gaga is
used to stand out to the audience and make it clear to the audience on who is the main feature of this issue of the
magazine. The magazine has to keep this artist consistent in the magazine because this artist will be the main feature of
this magazine and will want to be used to stand out to the audience throughout the magazine because this is basically like
her issue.
The interview starts with an enlarged letter in a Serif font. Is this typical of all magazines? Why do you think this is a
popular feature? Many magazines use this feature because it helps the reader know where the magazine starts the
interview, instead of the reader trying to find where the start of the interview is.
Why has the web address been included?
A web address has been given because it tells and helps the reader on where to go for any questions and problems they
have with the magazine. Also the text has been made bold so it stands out to the reader and lets them know that it is there
and where they need to go for any queries they have.
What other details are conventionally included in the corner of the page?
Throughout the magazine it uses many features such as date, issue number and can sometimes include a
website address and the title of the magazine because it will keep on telling the people as they look through the
magazine.
What is the purpose of the smaller version of the masthead in the corner of the page?
The purpose of keeping the masthead on the this page is to let the audience know it is the same magazine, but
also it keeps a similar style to all the other pages in the magazine.
Why are the page numbers important? Page numbers are important in a magazine because it helps the reader
know where they are in the magazine, but also they would only have got to this point if they went from the
contents page. This is because the contents page gives the information on where to go for this feature.
What do you notice about the layout of the text? How many columns are typical? What kind of font has been used
and what font size? Notice that there are no hyphens!
Here we notice that the magazine has used three columns of writing this is because most important feature is on
the left, this is because we read left to right. However the massive L also indicates that the main feature/text of
this magazine is in the massive L. However the L continues down into the bottom right corner of the magazine
because this will keep the reader interested and because it contains the most important information in the
magazine.
How is this a typical spread from Q magazine? What stylistic features are consistent? Why is
branding/maintaining a house style important? This magazine has included a massive L is state the name Lady
Gaga, but also to keep a consistent and similar style of red, black and white all through the magazine.
Why is the representation of the artist important? How is it consistent throughout the entire feature and with the
front cover? The representation of the artist is extremely important because with pictures/photos of the artist being
labelled all overt the magazine then people will know who is the main feature of this magazine. The size of the
image of Lady Gaga is used to stand out to the audience and make it clear to the audience on who is the main
feature of this issue of the magazine. The magazine has to keep this artist consistent in the magazine because
this artist will be the main feature of this magazine and will want to be used to stand out to the audience
throughout the magazine because this is basically like her issue.
Why is the artist’s name enlarged and positioned at the top of the page in a larger font than the interview text?
The artist name is enlarged because it lets the audience know who the artist is, but also text has been put in bold
so it stands out to the reader. This page has also put the surname in capitals because people will know who she
is when they seen the name Gaga, but also letters in capital letters stand out to the audience and the reader of
this magazine.
The masthead is included at
the top and bottom of the
page to remind the audience
what the name of the music
magazine is.
Clear picture of the artist, this
is included in all types of
double page spread
interviews and lets the
audience see a picture of the
artist.
There is a album cover and
CD, this is not included in
most music magazines,
however this is seen as a
exclusive to the music
magazine.
There is clear page numbers
on both pages of the double
page spread, this is so the
audience know where they
are in the music magazine.
There is clear quotes taken
from the interview that will
excite the audience and
hopefully make them want to
buy the music magazine
because of this.
The big S has been included
on the double page spread to
follow a pattern throughout
the music magazine.
However, here it is in a
different style.
There is a phone add link that
lets people download a song
from our artist, this is different
to other music magazine
because no other music
magazine does this.
The pictures could be
improved because they do
look boring and do not excite
the reader of this double page
spread interview.
 Many music magazines around at the moment have a main cover line, and mine is no different.
The main cover line is spotted at the bottom of the page just below the artist. The main cover
line is positioned there because people will know it relates to the artist if it is just below the
artist. Mime is the same to other magazines because I want to follow a similar style to other
magazines that are around.
 Many artists in music magazines can be seen holding a prop; this is because it lets the
audience know what sort of artist they are. However, the difference between mime and many
other music magazines is that mime does not include a prop because I want to attract the
audience a different way instead of attracting them with a prop.
 There are very few differences between my music magazine and other music magazines that
are already out there. Yet, my magazine does contain a style that not many magazines in the
world use. My style is to contain an S that goes across the page. This S is to represent the first
letter of the title of the magazine. Another difference my music magazine has to a free gift that
you have to download. My music magazine gives away a free song that is new and recorded by
the interviewed artist. This feature would hopefully go down well with the audience because
there are not many music magazines that give away a free song to download to your IPhone,
IPod etc.
 Many different music magazines contain different types of photos in their magazine. These can
be seen if the artist is pulling a different face or in a different position. My music magazine is
similar to all the other music magazines out there, because mime has the artist looking into the
camera. Many magazines out there also have their artist looking into the camera because they
are trying to invite the audience into the magazine. Throughout my magazine there are many
similarities between my magazine and other magazine for their photos because my contents
page features an image of the artist from the front cover as many other music magazines out
there. My double page spread features my artist; however, there are numerous magazines out
there that have the artist looking into the camera.

Question 1

  • 1. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS? Chris Hinton 12JCL
  • 2. There is a key fact about the magazine. This stands out and lets people know about this key fact about the magazine. Large and bold masthead that makes the reader knows what the magazine is about. It will also attract people who are fans of rugby. Large and bold texts that attract the reader and make them want to buy the magazine instead of putting the magazine back down. Small attractive little titles that attract people in and make you want to buy it just because it has some interesting information. There is a standout title on the front page, this will attract people, but the title is on the person. However, it is not over the persons face. The type of shot is a medium shot. This is the normal type of shot for a magazine. The person is looking at the camera, therefore this means he is inviting you in, and it attracts you to buy the magazine. There is a barcode and a price so the public know how much to pay if they want to buy the magazine. MAGAZINE FRONT COVER The layout of the magazine is well done because there is not text covering the face on the magazine. Date and issue number to let the person know when it is out and how many issue there have been
  • 3. There is a clear masthead at the top of the page. This stands out to the audience and lets them know what the title of the music magazine is because of the colours used e.g. white against the black and red text. In the centre of the music magazine there is a clear line that stands out to the audience. The white and red stands out well because they are bright and vibrant colours. The figure/model is looking into the camera or is looking straight at the person who is reading the music magazine. Therefore, he is inviting you to read the magazine because of the way he is looking at you through the camera The type of shot used to medium shot, this follows a pattern to other music magazine and other magazines that are already out there and selling. Large bold text is used on the front cover of my music magazine and it stands out to the audience who are reading this music magazine because of the colours that are used e.g. the black text against the white background, this stands out ot the audience who are reading the music magazine Date and issue numbers is on the front cover of the music magazine and does not distract the reader who is reading this music magazine. The box also contains a barcode and the website so the audience know where to go for more information. The front cover of my music magazine contains small text that stands out against a black background. However this text will be seen last because we read from left to right and up and down. Therefore because it is near the bottom the audience will see this piece of information last. The layout of the music magazine has been done so no text covers the artists face because this can disrespect the artist and make the whole music magazine look untidy and rushed.
  • 4. There are titles that spilt up the magazine. This will help people get to their favourite part of the magazine. There is page numbers so it is easier to get to a certain part of the magazine instead of going through the whole magazine. The pictures are the main attraction on the contents page, also they lead you to that page because it contains a page number so you can get to that page. The text have bright coloured boxes, this is so the text stands out to the reader. This will lead the reader straight to a bright section because it will attract the eye. The page numbers are bright red because red is a colour that will attract the eye and will also stand out to the reader who is looking through the magazine. The badge of Barcelona will attract fans of Barcelona to see what their manager says in this magazine. But also, fans from around the world will want to hear from one of the best managers in modern football. Contents Page
  • 5. The titles have been split, therefore it is easier for the audience to read through the text and find the piece of information they want to find, instead of looking through the whole text to find it. On the contents page there are page numbers that help the audience get to the correct page they want to get to. This makes it easier because you do not want the audience looking through the whole text just for one page of the music magazine. The pictures on the contents page could have been more interesting and do not excite me in any way. Therefore, if I was to go back I would make the photos look more exciting and better, this would improve the magazine dramatically The text on the contents page needs to stand out more to the user. Maybe, I should have followed the other contents page and use bright colours so they stand out to the audience. Another improvement would be to add bright colours to the numbers, this is because I want them to stand out better to the audience. The massive contents page text stands out to the audience who are reading this magazine. It also stands out because of the white text against the black background of the magazine. There is a massive masthead of the title of the music magazine. This is a massive positive because it lets the audience know and remind them what th name of the music magazine is. The title and slogan also stand out to the reader of the music magazine because of the black and red text against the white background. If you do this then the text will be clearer to see if you who opposite colours e.g. white against black.

  • 7. Double Page Spread What kind of information is included in the interview? What does the artist talk about? How is the interview relayed to the reader? In the interview Lady Gaga talks about her lifestyle and how she performed on the royal variety show in 2009. The interview is placed out to the reader with the most important text on the left hand side because everyone reads from left to right, so therefore the magazine has placed it out this way. The information that is included entertains the reader and makes them want to carry on reading the magazine because it will interest many other people and her fans as well. What is the purpose of the photograph of the artist? Why is the mise-en-scene important? How has the picture been edited? What is the effect of the artist looking at the camera? How much space does the image take? The purpose of the this type of photo is to attract the audience and let the audience know who this interview is all about. The style used has been made black and white, this is because it follows the same style as the rest of the pages included the red, black and white theme. The mise-en-scene of the image is that she is against a plain white background to fit in with the style of the magazine of red, black and white. The type of shot used is a close up this is because this shot will show the most detail and will suit the type of page with image. This image will also attract people to read the magazine because Lady Gaga is basically inviting you in to read the interview. This effect is used because it lets the audience know who is the the artist, but it also attracts the audience in, but it also invites in. This also means it invites them to read the interview. Why is the representation of the artist important? How is it consistent throughout the entire feature and with the front cover? The representation of the artist is extremely important because with pictures/photos of the artist being labelled all overt the magazine then people will know who is the main feature of this magazine. The size of the image of Lady Gaga is used to stand out to the audience and make it clear to the audience on who is the main feature of this issue of the magazine. The magazine has to keep this artist consistent in the magazine because this artist will be the main feature of this magazine and will want to be used to stand out to the audience throughout the magazine because this is basically like her issue. The interview starts with an enlarged letter in a Serif font. Is this typical of all magazines? Why do you think this is a popular feature? Many magazines use this feature because it helps the reader know where the magazine starts the interview, instead of the reader trying to find where the start of the interview is. Why has the web address been included? A web address has been given because it tells and helps the reader on where to go for any questions and problems they have with the magazine. Also the text has been made bold so it stands out to the reader and lets them know that it is there and where they need to go for any queries they have.
  • 8. What other details are conventionally included in the corner of the page? Throughout the magazine it uses many features such as date, issue number and can sometimes include a website address and the title of the magazine because it will keep on telling the people as they look through the magazine. What is the purpose of the smaller version of the masthead in the corner of the page? The purpose of keeping the masthead on the this page is to let the audience know it is the same magazine, but also it keeps a similar style to all the other pages in the magazine. Why are the page numbers important? Page numbers are important in a magazine because it helps the reader know where they are in the magazine, but also they would only have got to this point if they went from the contents page. This is because the contents page gives the information on where to go for this feature. What do you notice about the layout of the text? How many columns are typical? What kind of font has been used and what font size? Notice that there are no hyphens! Here we notice that the magazine has used three columns of writing this is because most important feature is on the left, this is because we read left to right. However the massive L also indicates that the main feature/text of this magazine is in the massive L. However the L continues down into the bottom right corner of the magazine because this will keep the reader interested and because it contains the most important information in the magazine. How is this a typical spread from Q magazine? What stylistic features are consistent? Why is branding/maintaining a house style important? This magazine has included a massive L is state the name Lady Gaga, but also to keep a consistent and similar style of red, black and white all through the magazine. Why is the artist’s name enlarged and positioned at the top of the page in a larger font than the interview text? The artist name is enlarged because it lets the audience know who the artist is, but also text has been put in bold so it stands out to the reader. This page has also put the surname in capitals because people will know who she is when they seen the name Gaga, but also letters in capital letters stand out to the audience and the reader of this magazine.
  • 9. The masthead is included at the top and bottom of the page to remind the audience what the name of the music magazine is. Clear picture of the artist, this is included in all types of double page spread interviews and lets the audience see a picture of the artist. There is a album cover and CD, this is not included in most music magazines, however this is seen as a exclusive to the music magazine. There is clear page numbers on both pages of the double page spread, this is so the audience know where they are in the music magazine. There is clear quotes taken from the interview that will excite the audience and hopefully make them want to buy the music magazine because of this. The big S has been included on the double page spread to follow a pattern throughout the music magazine. However, here it is in a different style. There is a phone add link that lets people download a song from our artist, this is different to other music magazine because no other music magazine does this. The pictures could be improved because they do look boring and do not excite the reader of this double page spread interview.
  • 10.  Many music magazines around at the moment have a main cover line, and mine is no different. The main cover line is spotted at the bottom of the page just below the artist. The main cover line is positioned there because people will know it relates to the artist if it is just below the artist. Mime is the same to other magazines because I want to follow a similar style to other magazines that are around.  Many artists in music magazines can be seen holding a prop; this is because it lets the audience know what sort of artist they are. However, the difference between mime and many other music magazines is that mime does not include a prop because I want to attract the audience a different way instead of attracting them with a prop.  There are very few differences between my music magazine and other music magazines that are already out there. Yet, my magazine does contain a style that not many magazines in the world use. My style is to contain an S that goes across the page. This S is to represent the first letter of the title of the magazine. Another difference my music magazine has to a free gift that you have to download. My music magazine gives away a free song that is new and recorded by the interviewed artist. This feature would hopefully go down well with the audience because there are not many music magazines that give away a free song to download to your IPhone, IPod etc.  Many different music magazines contain different types of photos in their magazine. These can be seen if the artist is pulling a different face or in a different position. My music magazine is similar to all the other music magazines out there, because mime has the artist looking into the camera. Many magazines out there also have their artist looking into the camera because they are trying to invite the audience into the magazine. Throughout my magazine there are many similarities between my magazine and other magazine for their photos because my contents page features an image of the artist from the front cover as many other music magazines out there. My double page spread features my artist; however, there are numerous magazines out there that have the artist looking into the camera. Key points from my answer to question 1
