Quebec's independence movement grew in the 1960s as many French Canadians felt their language and culture were being overwhelmed by English. They felt like second-class citizens in their own province and wanted Quebec to secede from Canada. Two referendums were held in 1980 and 1995 on whether Quebec should separate, but both votes resulted in Quebec deciding to remain part of Canada, though the 1995 vote was extremely close. The relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada remains controversial.
