Qantas: Background

Australia’s flag carrier airline.

•

Its previous name was QANTAS, an acronym for Queensland
and Northern Territory Aerial Services.

•

Nicknamed The Flying Kangaroo; biggest airline in Australia,
the oldest continuously operated airline in the world, and the
second oldest in the world as a whole.

•

Based in the Qantas Centre in the suburb of Mascot in the City
of Botany Bay in Sydney, with its main hub at Sydney Airport;
its other two hubs are at Melbourne Airport and Brisbane
Airport.

Claims a 65% share of the Australian domestic market; also
carries 18.7% of all passengers travelling in and out of

Qantas: History

Founded in Winton, Queensland on 16 November 1920 as
Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services
Limited.

•

Its first aircraft was an Avro 504K.

•

Flew internationally after May 1935, when it began service
from Darwin, Northern Territory to Singapore.

•

Entered the jet age when the first Boeing 707-138 was
delivered in June 1959.

The headquarters of Qantas are located in the Qantas Centre
in the Mascot suburb of the City of Botany Bay, Sydney, New
South Wales.

•

Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd has its
headquarters in Winton, Queensland in 1920.

•

The head office moved to Longreach, Queensland in 1921, but
moved to Brisbane in 1930.

•

A head office, Qantas House, opened along Hunter Street in
Sydney in 1957.

•

A new A$50 million headquarters in the 1970s, with twin
skyscrapers, was being constructed in Sydney and anticipated
to occupy one city block.

•

The first and biggest tower had its anticipated completion
time in 1973.
