What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
Sufia Momen
Questionnaire: survey monkey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XL67PXW
Using survey monkey, I created a questionnaire for my target audience, young adults
aged 15-21. This questionnaire would allow me to collect information and feedback from
my target audience, and help me determine the type of horror my audience would
prefer.
When distributing my survey I only sent it to those
who fitted into my target audience age range,
however I still included questions that would indicate
the participants age as this would allow me to filter
out results from anyone above or below my target
audiences age.
I also asked for the participants gender as I wanted to
create a horror film that could be enjoyed be both
male and female viewers. However, the majority of
collected results were from women (60%)
The results from my questionnaire gave me
audience feedback on the preferences for my
horror film.
My results show that the majority of my target
audience would prefer a Horror-thriller film
with a modern setting.
My survey also gathered information on what
horror film my target audience has enjoyed,
three of the results in this question (Q5)
showed the ‘The Resident’ is a horror film
enjoyed by my audience; I later chose to
analyse the ancillary products of this film.
Feed back from our target audience in my
questionnaire determined certain details of the
plot. For example the feed back from questions
seven and eight showed that our audience
would prefer the protagonist to be female and
to play a ‘good’ role in the film. This caused us
to cast Rebecca as the good main character,
and encouraged us to use a male antagonist.
Furthermore, the feedback from our
questionnaire gave us a preferred theme/plot,
a staler film was preferred by 80% of our
target audience.
In conclusion the feedback given by our target
audience in our questionnaire was vital to the
planning of our trailer as it showed the key
elements that our
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK: ‘Unknown Number’ trailer
Through the making of our horror film trailer we collected audience feedback on the
clips we had filmed and how we had edited them together; this allowed us to adjust
elements of the trailer as we progressed
Throughout the filming and editing process, our trailer and filming clips were viewed by our
peers; this allowed us to collect further audience feed back from people that fitted our target
audience. For example, the section of the trailer where Rebecca answers the call from the
‘Unknown Number’ ; one of our peers suggested adding a distorted voice rather than just have
Rebecca’s reaction , as they thought that would add an element of horror. This audience feed
back encouraged us to add in manipulated/distorted voiceovers of the stalker into sections of
the trailer.
‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of manipulated voice overs
‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of non-diegetic banging noises
The addition of non-diegetic noises in this section of the
trailer was suggested by members of our target audience
as they thought it would give our main character more
cause to suspect that someone was in the house. Taking
from this audience feedback we added in some non-
diegetic banging sounds as well as the slamming of her
bedroom door, this added suspense to the scene as well
as adding a moment of horror.
‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: additional moments of horror
The additional text ‘You’re dead bitch’:
This was suggested by one of our
peers as they thought it would add to
the horror of the film as well as show
the antagonist as being a very
dangerous character.
The addition of a slamming door:
This was suggested as it would give
Rebecca a cause to run frantically
down the stairs, allowing our original
story board to make more sense.
‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: added voiceover of a repeated line
The diegetic dialogue between Rebecca and Charlie arguing
over Ethan in a the earlier scene is later used as a voiceover
in the final scenes. This repeated line reinforces to the
audience that Ethan is not a character to be trusted as well as
suggests Ethan and Charlie’s involvement in Rebecca being
taken.
‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of non-diegetic sound in the last scenes
In the final scene of Rebecca running from the house, we chose to add
the non-diegetic sound of a clock; this created a sense of horror and
suspense, this is the same effect that the heartbeat sound had in the
horror trailers we analysed. Furthermore, upon audience feedback we
added in the diegetic screams of Rebecca in the final scene, in the car,
this added another moment of horror and increased the intensity of the
last scene

Throughout the filming and editing process, our trailer and filming clips were viewed by our peers; this allowed us to collect further audience feed back from people that fitted our target audience. For example, the section of the trailer where Rebecca answers the call from the ‘Unknown Number’ ; one of our peers suggested adding a distorted voice rather than just have Rebecca’s reaction , as they thought that would add an element of horror. This audience feed back encouraged us to add in manipulated/distorted voiceovers of the stalker into sections of the trailer. ‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of manipulated voice overs
  • 9. ‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of non-diegetic banging noises The addition of non-diegetic noises in this section of the trailer was suggested by members of our target audience as they thought it would give our main character more cause to suspect that someone was in the house. Taking from this audience feedback we added in some non- diegetic banging sounds as well as the slamming of her bedroom door, this added suspense to the scene as well as adding a moment of horror.
  • 10. ‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: additional moments of horror The additional text ‘You’re dead bitch’: This was suggested by one of our peers as they thought it would add to the horror of the film as well as show the antagonist as being a very dangerous character. The addition of a slamming door: This was suggested as it would give Rebecca a cause to run frantically down the stairs, allowing our original story board to make more sense.
  • 11. ‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: added voiceover of a repeated line The diegetic dialogue between Rebecca and Charlie arguing over Ethan in a the earlier scene is later used as a voiceover in the final scenes. This repeated line reinforces to the audience that Ethan is not a character to be trusted as well as suggests Ethan and Charlie’s involvement in Rebecca being taken.
  • 12. ‘UNKNOWN NUMBER’ TRAILER: addition of non-diegetic sound in the last scenes In the final scene of Rebecca running from the house, we chose to add the non-diegetic sound of a clock; this created a sense of horror and suspense, this is the same effect that the heartbeat sound had in the horror trailers we analysed. Furthermore, upon audience feedback we added in the diegetic screams of Rebecca in the final scene, in the car, this added another moment of horror and increased the intensity of the last scene
